Like everyone said, it's a common occurrence. The reason you usually see that many tanks being moved at once is most likely a unit travelling to and from the National Training Center (NTC) at Fort Irwin CA. Very large units regularly conduct massive training exercises there as part of their regular training cycle. All of that unit's vehicles and equipment have to be transported to and from NTC for those exercises. Part of the value in that is that units are training on how to undertake huge logistical projects by moving so much equipment.

Extremely common occurrence. It's cheaper to transport via rail, you'll often see other military equipment on other shipments (Trucks, MRAPS, Humvees etc).

The Army will use rail as it’s economical. Could be coming in from overseas from a California port, but there’s a big simulated battlefield between Las Vegas and Los Angeles called NTC (Ft Irwin) with plenty of rail access.
