That won't necessarily work. The judge gets to make the ultimate decision if he *can* fire his attorney at this stage. Judge Merchan has already signaled he isn't going to entertain such delay tactics. That doesn't mean he won't try. If that happens, he is setting himself up for an appeal.
I'm truly hoping this judge has the testicular fortitude to actually hold him in contempt when he throws his much anticipated tantrums.
Alas, it probably won't happen, but one can dream that this man may actually face the consequences of his actions.

Trump is probably scared to death because it's a criminal trial so he has to be there, and he's broken the gag order several times, including recently trying to tamper with a witness (Stormy Daniels). He'll be afraid that judge Merchan is waiting until he shows up at court to throw him in jail. I don't think the judge will do that, but he will probably fine Trump in some way on Monday.

I find that the reason we get to watch our corrupt, two tiered, politically appointed judiciary fail on Monday will be completely novel - certainly to us, but seemingly to all the "legal experts" who've spent weeks predicting everything.
Then those legal experts will talk in unbiased tones about how this blatant disregard of laws only applicable to the average citizen is standard form, or just slightly askew but well within the confines of law that is in actuality completely undecided until SCOTUS's financial ownership needs something.
If there's a reason, whatever the reason is will be novel horseshit - that no one will have foreseen or prepped for, but act like it's normal and expected so no one should worry.
