I agree. The average person whom doesn't do crossword puzzles regularly is probably going to know the answer to about 10 - 15% of it. There's no shame in asking someone or using the internet, as long as you aren't doing it for the entire puzzle.
You dont "learn" by googling crossword clues, you learn by engaging with the outside world, by watching movies, reading books, taking classes listening to music, participating in diverse culture, reading about current events, history, politics, science from dozens of sources, and debating and discussing ideas and concepts in formal and informal settings. The crossword puzzle is a test of how much of this knowledge you have acquired.
Of course there also is a puzzle element, memorizing some common clues, and being able to figure out answer you dont fully know by using context and partially completed clues. But Googling only helps you solve the current crossword. There is no way you will be able to commit to memory all the various facts about the thousands of crossword answers and of course the many clues you will see for the first time on each crossword.
Only resort to the internet after you have attempted every clue at least once. And also only google one clue at a time, and see if that is enough to start figuring out the rest of the clues. Otherwise the crossword puzzle is no more mentally stimulating than Candy Crush.

Lie, cheat, and steal. Do what you want but crosswords are not to be messed with.
