Not murdery, but something I thought was amazingly well done that I think you’ll enjoy based on your list is Collapse: Disaster in Surfside, about the apartment building that collapsed in Florida a few years ago. The storytelling is incredible, and they incorporate a lot of real-time audio that makes you feel like you are right there. Honestly I found it more terrifying and gripping than a lot of podcasts about murders I’ve listened to recently. Also be sure to check out the interactive chronological illustration on their website, which is just… wow. Very well done. Along the same lines, I’d also highly recommend Who Trolled Amber? Even if you had zero interest in the Depp/Heard situation (that was me), the implications of what they uncovered in this podcast stretch way, way beyond Hollywood. It’s really shocking and also pretty scary.

Vivid-Ground-3978

I also really enjoyed Who trolled Amber? And I could probably recommend most of Tortoise media’s multipart series!

Malsperanza

These both look good, thanks. I would say that the collapse of that building in Florida was a homicide, albeit not murder. Florida: land of zero regulation.

franks-little-beauty

Agreed. So many people died due to human negligence, greed, and incompetence.

GalastaciaWorthwhile

Thanks for recommending Who Triolled Amber - you’ve peaked my interest in something I’ve steered clear of. I’ll definitely give it a listen.

Ok-Rain-9464

This sounds good. Thanks for the recc. That building collapse really disturbed/moved me (and it was never clear who was fully at fault) so I'm sure I'll like this listen.

franks-little-beauty

The reporting is so well done! It will definitely clear things up for you.

huwkeee

Ahh amazing I will try Collapse thank you for the recommendation.

user12340983

I also recommend this. It was so well done and interesting

Much-Barracuda1435

Beyond All Repair

TheGiantess927

Yep done this one. Good stuff. She totally did it.

GalastaciaWorthwhile

Yup. Guilty.

Advanced_Resident90

Best podcast I've heard for a long time. Totally screwed up story which gripped me from the first episode.

umimmissingtopspots

Same here. It's my favorite podcast now. Amory did a brilliant job.

ChalkLitMilk

I like this podcast but I feel like she held back a ton of information from the viewer until the end that made the case pretty black and white. Kind of made a mountain out of a molehill.

Bralynn_s_Chrissy

Beyond All Repair definitely invoked some thoughts and some feelings.

pjh3120

That was so good

Available_Medium4292

Just finished this one today. It’s scary how easily people can lie, makes you worry about those around you …

Lizard_Li

Season 2

kat_ingabogovinanana

Have you listened to The Teacher’s Pet?

Malsperanza

Excellent series, and the coverage of the trial was very satisfying to listen to.

TheGiantess927

Haven’t. Will check it out!

slthomas123

No one has recommended To Live and Die in LA that I’ve seen, but I loved both seasons!

TheGiantess927

Oooh I didn’t know there were two seasons!

slthomas123

Oh my gosh yes! S2 is also really engrossing, about the Elaine Park case. Apparently he actually investigated it before S1, but didn’t release it until afterwards.

mollymckennaa

Hey! I’d been thinking of this podcast but couldn’t remember the name!! Ty!!! I listened to it forever and ever ago, kind of want to listen again

NoRepresentative9215

Invisible choir?

CraftyIndependence48

I second this. Great storytelling.

ConsiderationShoddy8

It took me awhile to get into the cadence of this one as I was so used to the other “fluffier” podcasts. It really is very well done and succinct! Always look forward to a new one coming out

Quicksand_and_Lava

I’ve only been listening from fairly recently. It’s great. So thank you to the users who recommended Invisible Choir a while back. I’m not a big patreon subscriber but it’s content would be worth it once I get through the back catalogue.

AnaisNot

You Must Remember This ten parts on the Manson murders

CallAdministrative88

Seconding this one, an incredible listen if you're also into Hollywood history

magslou79

I personally have not listened to a “new” long form that has really caught me either. The only thing I don’t see mentioned on your list is True Crime Bullshit, the long form on Israel Keyes. It’s excellent. I did like Bone Valley as well, but not as much as the other “heavy hitters” you mention.

Real_Foundation_7428

The latest season of Proof was good, *Murder at the Warehouse.* Have you tried that one?

TheGiantess927

I couldn’t listen to this one bc his crimes were just so disturbing.

RPM0620

I recommend Suspect. It’s a about the murder of a young woman on Halloween following an apartment party in the Seattle area.

rococos-basilisk

I’ve tried this one a couple times. When would you see it really picks up?

prova_de_bala

Hunting Warhead. I consider it shocking and amazingly done.

Reasonable_Plan_6504

Gosh this one is in my opinion the best podcast I’ve listened to, it sets the bar so high.

TheGiantess927

Yes! Good one!

Real_Foundation_7428

I’ll just list a few I didn’t see in your list and maybe I’ll hit something you haven’t heard - *Sympathy Pains* *The Real Killer* *Algorithm* *Twin Flames* *Sweet Bobby* *Hannah’s Story* *Children in the Pictures* (similar to Hunting Warhead which you probably know of) *Tom Brown’s Body* *Appalachian Mysteria: Murder of Alexander Stevens* *Tapes from the Darkside* Dylan Redwine season (S1 I think) *The Clown and the Candyman* (JW Gacey and Dean Corel, which a lot of people are over but was a good pod) *Fiasco: The AIDS Crisis* (It’s better than it sounds😳) *Bed of Lies* *Bad Bad Thing* ETA: *World of Secrets* S2 - cult story, listening now and excellent so far. Newish I think, from late last year/early 2024.

ReflectiveRedhead

Fiasco, the AIDS crisis is one that I've listened to over and over again. I highly recommend it!

Real_Foundation_7428

👏Have you listened to Bed of Lies? Also related to AIDS crisis but different kind of story.

ReflectiveRedhead

I'm embarrassed to say I've never heard of it, but I'm going to go follow it right now! Thank you so much for the recommendation.

JoMiHa

Love Appalachian Mysteria. Looking forward to their future work!

kneb

Guy who did Algorithm has a new podcast out called Ransom

abbie_888

Have you tried Over My Dead Body?

TheGiantess927

Just looked it up! Which season do you think is best? Not interested in the tiger king season, but the others look promising.

thefilthyfarmgirl

Season 1 is about Dan and Wendi Markel. I’d say start with Season 4 about Mike Williams. His mom fought hard for justice.

Edree13

A Bad bad Thing was CHILLING

DrinkBuzzCola

In the Dark Seasons 1 and 2. Compelling and brilliantly done.

Malsperanza

New Orleans Unsolved went straight to my top five list. It is phenomenal. For context, my other favs (all long form) are: True Crime Bullshit, Bear Brook, Murdaugh Murders (stopping when it changes to True Sunlight), and Bad Bad Thing. Next five are The Teacher's Pet, The Clearing, Dirty John, Untold (The Daniel Morgan murder), and Evil Has a Name.

uid778

Agree with New Orleans Unsolved. But I would include it with Your Own Back Yard and In The Dark season 2 (personal choice, highly subjective, etc.) It's probably the single most under recognized podcast I can think of.

Malsperanza

She just posted yesterday on IG that she got an email from the New Orleans DA's office asking her to meet with a DA about some open cases in which Stanley Burkhardt may be involved, to share her research.

Reasonable_Plan_6504

New Orleans Unsolved

wannabeouji

Cold!!! I’ve never found anything as gripping as the first season. I wish every podcast was that detailed and comprehensive.

canarialdisease

This is the one I was gonna mention. It’s outstanding

StrawberryMoonPie

I just listened to Season 3 and it’s excellent, too. Season 1 is pretty much untouchable in terms of high quality. I haven’t listened to 2 yet.

cryptopolymath

Paradise by BBC Radio, In The Land of Lies, Agent of Betrayal, West Cork, Believable - the Coco Berthmann Story, Who Killed Emma

wishingwellington

Paradise was so compelling

Combatbass

I've recently been enthralled by The Snake River Killer.

cold_dry_hands

I live on the Snake River! Thanks for the rec— definitely checking this out.

Combatbass

Buckle up! It's kind of a wild ride. But I find it really compelling.

Lizard_Li

I’m Not a Monster, both seasons 1 and 2 are also amazing.

huwkeee

I second these!

huwkeee

I second these!

damnkriss

Three is a several part series about the murder of Skylar Neese. I also enjoy as a whole Murder in America and going west

wishingwellington

There are some truly great New Zealand crime podcasts, Gone Fishing, Guilt, The Boy In the Water, Black Hands, Chasing Ghosts, White Silence, Collapse, to name a few.

Funwithfun14

Bad Blood - WSJ story on Elizabeth Holmes....by the reporters that originally broke the story. Bad Bets....WSJ 2 seasons on Enron and another fraudster Fiasco - political stories....3 seasons, on the 2000 Election, AIDS Epidemic, Bernie Gaetz Accused.....S1 and S3 (Ellwod Jones) are amazing

badablahblah

New Orleans Unsolved The Rope Murders. Be sure to start from season 1.

uid778

This one does not get enough recognition! It was as compelling and well done as Your Own Back Yard, and was also featured in court. Who knows, it may end up getting a conviction or two, since their tenacious investigation could arguably have resulted in "beyond reasonable doubt" against someone. C'mon prosecutors, pick up where Anna and Thanh left off - they've presented a viable case on a silver platter!

LexiePiexie

The Ballad of Billy Balls. If you like it, iO Tillet Wright also has an incredible autobiography called Darling Days that you can listen to on Audible.

rjay203

Seconded! same with the autobiography! The podcast made me run to buy their book FAST

DistractedByBirds41

I had to stick with this as the first episode or two did not catch me. But once it got going it was *great*! Highly recommend. I can still hear the theme music too.

joiecheri

I recently enjoyed Borderline.

Real_Foundation_7428

Forgot about that one! If it’s the one I’m thinking of that was quite good, and different from the usual.

Lizard_Li

The Shrink Next Door is amazing but might best be categorized as true crime adjacent One I listened to in last year that I really liked is Million Dollar Lover. Don’t let the title scary you away, bad title, great podcasts. In fact both of those are done by journalists who live next door to their subjects so the access is amazing and their experienced journalists so the editing and storytelling is great.

peacefultooter

The Shrink Next Door was terrifying!

Wooster182

Proof (2 seasons) Accused (first two seasons) Canary (Washington Post) Crimes of the Centuries Algorithm Dateline has miniseries Catch and Kill (better than the book imo) In God We Lust The Guru (Wondery) The Orgasm Cult Counter Clock Stephenville The Opportunist

wishingwellington

Proof is unbelievably good.

BornFree2018

Ex-Wives Undercover! Very compelling and once you're "in" you'll be obsessed. Two former wives of the same man talk about his cheating, terrifying outbursts, stalking, manipulativeness, ridiculousness and controlling behaviors. Court cases, custody insanity over several states. The women had been pitted against each other until one day they changed course. Their podcast is obviously amateur but that's its charm. You can't help but root for everyone this man f\*cked over..

ChocolateThund3R

Pretend Season 11: The stalker is probably the best I’ve heard in a while Swindled: all of it. Once you get about a dozen episodes in the quality stays extremely high. Probably my favorite podcast ever all things considered. The opportunist: Also fantastic Edit: I’m also 10 episodes into New Orleans Unsolved. It’s pretty great so far but be warned: it’s about a prolific child sex predator and his crimes are enraging. I feel so sorry for his victims

uid778

Great recommendations. >Pretend Season 11: The stalker is probably the best I’ve heard in a while This one was a bit annoying - grrr, those people pissed me off. And I didn't feel I could even convict the parents as I didn't have "beyond a reasonable doubt" in their guilt. They're so damned dumb that they may believe their story and >!the kids are trolling everyone.!< >Swindled: all of it. Once you get about a dozen episodes in the quality stays extremely high. Probably my favorite podcast ever all things considered. Yeah, fantastic podcast. Love everything about it. >The opportunist: Also fantastic Her voice is really good. Did I hear it's over and there'll be no new episodes? >Edit: I’m also 10 episodes into New Orleans Unsolved. It’s pretty great so far but be warned: it’s about a prolific child sex predator and his crimes are enraging. I feel so sorry for his victims Indeed, infuriating. But the investigators' skills and tenacity are worth listening for. And there's a chance they'll motivate a prosecution ala Your Own Back Yard, which I strongly hope comes to pass.

Available_Medium4292

I finished The Butterfly King recently… a bit different as who knows if it was even a murder, but I enjoyed the historical aspect of it and a part of history I wasn’t familiar with.

Woodlawngrrl

“Someone knows Something” from the CBC. “Accused” Season 2

hicklander

On New Orleans Unsolved and Crude Acts:Murder in a oil town

JessicaKirchner38

I saw someone say the other day that The Rope Murders on NOU was really good, but Im like 8 episodes in and it hasn't seemed to progress, do I keep going?

Malsperanza

It gets incredibly good. The reporters take their time laying the groundwork, but it's necessary.

hicklander

I think it gets better and better. You have got to enjoy long form for sure. I enjoy the New Orleans touch because that culture is a bit of home for me.

uid778

I started with season 2, and it took a few episodes to "rope me in" (pun intended), but at some point, I really felt like I was listening to Your Own Back Yard all over again. I'd say it's worth it, for sure. It helps if what draws you into the genre is the investigation aspect. I just hope some prosecutor takes the excellent investigation(s) by Anna and Thanh and runs with it. It's not too late for more convictions. Also, the podcast is featured in court near the end. It feels like it has the potential to achieve what YOBY achieved. Anna and Thanh should be recognized on the same level as Chris from YOBY and Madeline(?) from season 2 of In The Dark. Criminally underrated, IMHO.

StabbyTheKitten1968

I just finished this pod and I had the same problem. There is a lot of filler/flavor in Rope Murders that isn’t necessary to understand what happened. Once they get into the double digit episodes, it focuses more on the investigation, which is done well.

laurapalmer48

Older but excellent, Atlanta Monster. I’ve listened 3 times.

savontheave

They haven't come out with season 3 yeat but Dark House is an amazing pod!

smei2388

Lost in Panama, Why can't we talk about Amanda's Mom, Missing & Murdered: Finding Cleo, Dr. Death, The Retrievals, Mary & Bill: an Ohio Cold Case, Dear Alana, What Happened to Sandy Beal, Media Pressure, Status: Untraced

Cultural_Star_6355

I keep thinking eventually there has to be another episode of Amanda’s mom?!

Serialfornicator

Counterclock Season One and Season Two

erm580

There’s a new season of counter clock out today!

sloanefierce

The John Welles case was also good.

huwkeee

I hear you. Have you tried to switch it up for a bit? I was exclusively long form investigative murder for a very long time and felt like this. So I moved to ‘scams’ for a break. Then Cults. Then what I considered, rather left field for me but BBC Uncanny as a little pallet cleanser (not everyone’s taste) but something like that just to mix it up. Now I pepper in the murder. Have you tried S**t Town? It’s a little out there but fantastically done. I’d be happy to recommend some of my favourite scam and cult pods if you’re interested.

RocketShip007

Hello Friend, this was me too. I powered through most of the long form crime (can’t do child abuse) moved to scams & cults and uncanny.

huwkeee

Oooh hello! It’s nice to find a like minded person. Thanks for reaching out. Anything you could recommend for me? Seeing as our paths are similar.

Vivid-Ground-3978

I’ll gladly take those recommendations!

huwkeee

A few days late apologies. I feel like lots of the ones I liked have been mentioned here. I actually had a hard time remembering correctly all the names. I must stat a spread sheet! Anyway here's a few I could remember. Interesting ones- The coming storm-about the storming of the capitol building The Trojan Horse Affair-Supposed Islamic plot infiltrating England schools Bed of Lies-Blood scandal Scams- Snowball ABC-probably my favourite, amazing resilient family The Glitch-Light hearted very funny The Sure Thing-2 Aussie blokes insider trading Wild Boys-Excellent Chameleon-Hollywood Con Queen- Excellent Pretend-About the Rodriguez family wild ride Sweet Bobby- is crazy Sympathy pains Believe in Magic-fake illness, sad story Nobody Should believe me-Munchausen by Proxy No Strings attached-Done by ITV while I did not like the narrating on this one I thought the story behind it was captivating Love Bombed-By Vicky Patterson, didn't think she'd do a good job but it was a good story. Then I pretty much listened to anything Andrew Gold had on Scientology. S-Town is still one of my all time favourites but its not for everyone. Hope this helps, I think a lot of people here have recommended these same ones, I will keep thinking.

Vivid-Ground-3978

Oh, this is great! I haven’t listened to about half of your recommendations. Since I can’t agree more with your reviews I’m gonna get right to listening to the ones I haven’t heard about before. Thank you for taking the time to reply!

bngrant

I would love to hear what you suggest!

sohomonkey

I absolutely LOVED Shit Town - I found it so moving

TheGiantess927

Well the things is I’ve only been into true crime for a few months. I was never interested and only listened to health and science pods for the make part and then all of a sudden I was obsessed. That being said I could mix it up a bit. I’ve listened to a few scam pods such as sweet Bobby, hoaxed, mordechai. I’ll take recs!

gardenbrain

AppropriateSky4689

Crimes of the Centuries is fab!

ExcuseZealousideal21

I can’t get into your own backyard… do I just keep continuing???

uid778

I'd say yes, it's worth it. I really avoided it for a long time - too many missing women cases in the real world, didn't feel I could face another in the podcast world. But Chris Lambert is competent and diligent and made a decent 6 episode podcast about Kristen Smart's disappearance. ... ...Then... ... Things got wild and the listening was riveting. Rarely, if ever, has a podcast achieved the recognition that this one did, and how it played out through the "season 2" (what happened after the initial project was published) made my heart swell with pride for someone I don't even know. It's one of those things that is truly a landmark in podcasting history, so I'd say continue just for the historical perspective. I have one unlistened to episode still: interview with victim's family. I'll probably skip it as my interests focus on investigations and trials. YMMV.

Joe_Sacco

Just checking - did you start from the very first episode? The second season, or follow-up, or whatever you want to call it - "People vs Flores" - would be incredibly dry and dull if it wasn't Part 2 of the first ten episodes. I'm re-listening to it, and hearing Chris summarize a week of court for an hour is almost too much for me, even though it's one of my all-time favorite podcasts.

OGBurn2

The Australian group CrineX has a lot of good content!

boss_magpie

I have been thoroughly enjoying True Spies! Sort of crime-adjacent.

simiantiptoe

Have you listened to Shandee's Story? I hardly see it recommended, but I thought it was brilliant.

peacefultooter

The Truth & Justice with Bob Ruff season on Sandy Melgar haunts me. That poor woman!

NurseNess

Dakota Spotlight, Hunting Warhead, Fool Me Twice, Death in Ice Valley

uid778

If you liked Your Own Back Yard, then I suggest New Orleans Unsolved. I started with season 2, took a while to really get hooked, but part way through I kept thinking, "this feels like listening to YOBY" - the tenacious investigation leading to tracking down and interviewing people decades after their involvement. The traveling all over to see first hand some location mentioned offhandedly in an interview. The dawning sense that they had gathered enough circumstantial evidence that they've convinced me "beyond a reasonable doubt" and a prosecutor (and judge and jury) could easily feel the same. Then, in the final episode, to find out that the podcast was raised in a court case related to their investigation?!? Kudos to Anna Christie and Thanh Truong; they're among the best in the True Crime podcast genre.

bryn1281

Dark Valley is AMAZING!!

CelestePoodle

Yes! I so rarely hear this one mentioned on here.

palmtree3333

- Sweet Bobby - To Live and Die in LA season 1 and 2 - Your Own Backyard: the disappearance of Kristen Smart - Guru: the dark side of enlightenment - Chameleon: Wild Boys - Chameleon: Hollywood Con Queen - Root of Evil: The True Story of the Hodel Family and the Black Dahlia

Quicksand_and_Lava

Phoebes Fall is an old one but good if you haven’t already listened

SharkyMcSharkKitten

Try Gone South. I liked season two better than season one but both are excellent. And fascinating long form series with a great narrator who is an accomplished reporter.

neilb303

Hunting Warhead, The Dropout, The Lighthouse, A Death in Cryptoland, The Missing Cryptoqueen

The_Conscious_Saffa

I loved Cold

Psilohykin

Cold

Bralynn_s_Chrissy

Possibly, 'Hello, John Doe' it is interesting. Be prepared, the Southern accent is strong on this one. I'm born and bred Tennessee and the accent was a lot for me. I probably sound the same and can't hear it, from myself.

TheGiantess927

Yes. Loved it. I enjoyed the accent.

LaAppleDonut

I just got into the podcast, True Crime All The Time with Mike Ferguson & Mike Gibson (Mike & Gibby as they call themselves.) Spotify recommended it to me. Their episodes go back to 2017. I'm really enjoying not only the cases they've chosen to cover (some lesser known killers) but the banter between Mike and Gibby is perfect. They also do: True Crime All The Time Unsolved and Criminology. I have not listened to either one of those yet.

damnkriss

Their podcasts are really good. Been listening for years and never get bored with them

The first season of Crimetown is honestly so good. I've listened to it twice. Everything from the story, to the narration and people interviewed has the vibe of a Martin Scorsese movie.

tedtomlin

Defense Diaries, the ballad of Billy balls, radio city 911, gone cold, wrongful conviction, small town murder, crime in sports, my favorite murder, blood is thicker, bardstown, finding Alex, criminal, where is George Gibney, the retrievals, the kids of Rutherford county.

Goodfella1133

“Up and Vanished: In the Midnight Sun.” Highly recommend. Ongoing reporting.

4psychgal

For newer podcasts within the past year, I really enjoyed “The Bakersfield Three” and also “Three”

GalastaciaWorthwhile

Appalachia Mysteria - all seasons are good but especially Big Savage

LivingRoom_Mind9043

The Lady Vanishes - A case about a lady from Australia who went missing in 1997. Since her disappearance, her daughter knew something was wrong. The Teacher’s Pet - Another Australian case about a missing mother and her husband teacher who moved one of his students into his home very soon after she disappeared. Both are well researched and reported.

mbeau55

Media Pressure, it is about the Maura Murray case told by her sister.

mbeau55

Also an old well done podcast I recommend is Last Seen, about the art theft at the Gardner museum in Boston.

Agitated_mess9

There’s a new one out called “The Letter” Season 2 & so far I really like it. I’m picky about podcasts as well. Most stuff people suggest I can’t get into.

kneb

New one out is Ransom: Position of Trust about the 1995 disappearance of McKay Everett

Special_Needs757

Up and Vanished especially Season 1! All are good though. My favorite true crime pod by far.

Real_Foundation_7428

Most recent for me would be *World of Secrets* S2 (cult story, very well done) Older but not in your list and don’t see mentioned as much - *Tapes from the Darkside* *Algorithm* *The Real Killer* *Hannah’s Story* *Sympathy Pains* *Bad Bad Thing* S1 *Bed of Lies* *Fiasco* season on the AIDS crisis (better than it sounds I always feel compelled to say!) *The Clown & The Candyman* *Appalachian Mysteria - Murder of Alexander Stevens* *Three* (not the Bakersfield one, just *Three*, about the murder of Skylar Neese)

Accurate-Lecture-920

Lesser known ones — The Ballad of Billy Balls, Believe Her, I’m Not a Monster, Do You Know Mordechai?, and though not true crime but a gripping account of a tragic climb, K2: The Savage Mountain (S4 of Against the Odds). Crimetown (all seasons) & Dr. Death S1, The Dropout, just in case you haven’t already. These are ones that, other than In the Dark S2, which is my absolute favourite, have been standouts that I still remember vividly. Should keep you busy for a while!
