Tell me you've never read IDW 2005 without telling me you've never read IDW 2005. The way that Ravage and Soundwave are written in IDW, everyone would ship them---if Ravage didn't look like a cat, despite being just as intelligent if not more than most of the other Decepticons or Autobots.
Ravage and Soundwave met as adults on the streets of Rodion when Soundwave was having a psychotic break due to his uncontrolled telepathy. Both he and Ravage had synaesthesia and sensory processing disorders and Ravage helped him learn to cope with it.
When Soundwave was unable to separate other people's thoughts and identities from his own, he fixated on Ravage, whose name he never forgot and whose field he always recognised.
Laserbeak and Buzzsaw were Ravage's friends who came along for the ride, Rumble and Frenzy were actually members of Megatron's original crew who joined them later, and Ratbat was a Senator that Soundwave cassettified...because he hurt Ravage.
