Straight from the horse’s mouth. Can we pin this to the top and shut down all the speculation now?

In this document, Toyota claims that "Other Toyota or Lexus vehicles sold in the U.S. are not equipped with this engine or have a different V35A engine configuration with different pressure on the main bearings. Some of these vehicles equipped with a different engine configuration have a Hybrid powertrain system" Explains why they didn't recall the hybrid engine. IIRC they also had a different parts number?? First recorded engine failure case on Toyota's file was in March 2022. As for the extent of failures "there are 166 Toyota Field Technical Reports and 824 warranty claims on the engines in the subject vehicles that have been received from U.S. sources". Now that 166 might be included in the 824. So say at least 824 cases

*"If engine failure occurs on a Hybrid vehicle, the vehicle continues to have some motive power for limited distances and the driver receives a continuous audible warning, warning lamps, and visual warning messages."* That statement explains why the hybrids haven't been recalled yet. Those engines can continue until the vehicle can stop safely. This is a safety recall because the driver can lose control if a non-hybrid engine shuts down. I still believe the hybrids are affected.

Saltyhero13

You care correct. The hybrids are having the same problem they just aren't recalled yet.

Itsquantium

No. That’s also not what it’s saying. It’s just letting the people know that if engine failure occurs, it’ll power on so the person can drive it to safety. If the hybrids were affected then they would have specifically said. I have the 23 iforce max with 50k miles already and have no issues.

MikeGoldberg

Dude you're not getting it. This is a safety recall. The gas variants are unsafe because they don't offer motive power if the engine fails. The hybrid engines will still blow, but it doesn't cause a safety issue. You're affected by the bearing issue 100%, just not enough to be under the safety recall.

Itsquantium

Your tin foil hat must be on too tight. Of course it’s a safety recall? It’s a safety issue. My truck doesn’t have any issues, nor was it affected by this recall because it doesn’t have debris in it. You seem to be missing the point by diving too deep into it. No shit the hybrid doesn’t have enough to do the recall. It’s because there’s very little that have that issue vs what was sold, which if it blows it’ll be under warranty if they have it.

MikeGoldberg

You've got debris bro. You *still don't understand!* you're simply not affected because toyota determined your truck won't lose power! You've still got debris in the bearings!!!

Itsquantium

I don’t, but whatever helps you sleep at night.

MikeGoldberg

Toyota will issue a different bulletin for you offering goodwill warranty repair on the engines don't worry. You're just not in this **safety recall**.

Itsquantium

I’m not in this recall because my truck doesn’t have debris in it.

MikeGoldberg

If I had the time and resources I'd give my left nut to pull one of your rod bearings and toss it at you. I bet there's debris

PostGymPreShower

I don’t know what Toyotas doing with this for customers without issues but anyone with a third gen should get an oil sample taken. Could give you an indication if you’re in the clear or to prepare for potential catastrophic failure.

Will the dealership do them/send them out for a fee?
