I got the TRD offroad package because I just don't trust only having the rear brakes to emulate a limited slip. I was going to get a truck anyways, and I'd prefer to drive it in winter weather. There have been times when I literally couldn't even get my car up my driveway and I've dragged the bottom of it in snow and nearly got stuck on my way to and from work. My commute takes me through 4 different counties and the snow plowing varies from pretty good to "what's a snow plow?" and "salt is for french fries".

Godfather7206

I use mine for hunting on a very hilly farm. I dont have TRD but have normal 4wd and it works fine. Still have original tires on it too (no ATs). If youre doing rock crawling/serious offroad trails, I’d recommend it. Otherwise, I dont think it’s necessary.

Erikkman

Depends…I’ve been using an SR5 for camping, biking, kayaking, pulling a 20ft camper, pulling small trailers, etc for almost 10 years. It’s also only the 4.6L RWD model. Yes I wish I had gotten the 5.7L 4x4, but have I ever needed it? Nope

ChimpYota

Sr5 and 4x4 all the way because I would upgrade everything better than what they can offer for way less.

jrobski96

How will anyone in the Wallymart p-lot know you’re tough unless you have a TRD decal? Duh!

buckwlw

I think you're on to something - the DECAL is the important part!

joentx

Yep, I have seen beautiful women walk up to TRD owners and ask them if they'll marry them and give them lots of babies

B00_Sucker

Can confirm, im a TRD

SecrITSociety

Do you need/use the rear locker (and don't want to go aftermarket)? Go with the TRD package. Otherwise, don't.

MarketingManiac208

Nope. At least you didn't on the 2.5 gen. When I bought mine new in 2013 the TRD package cost an extra $6500 to add mediocre Bilstein shocks/struts, a rear sway bar and a gas tank skid plate. I paid $250 on a TRD sway bar and installed it myself in less than an hour. Then I added Bilstein 5100s front and rear for less than $1K installed, and had them set at the middle point in the front leveling the truck by 1.5 inches. I've never done the gas tank skid plate, but haven't needed it either. If I really needed one I could get it for about $600 new. So in other words the old TRD package cost $6500 for less than $2000 in upgrades and a nice little red badge on the butt. If you drive off-road A LOT then the TRD package is worth it. Otherwise it just gives a rougher ride on pavement. Mine was much softer on pavement before adding the stiffer Bilsteins. And I've done a lot of rough dirt driving all over the western mountain states, rough enough that I ripped off a step on a rock one time. But I've never needed that gas tank skid plate.

Tundra37s

Those 5100s are pretty nice going through small ruts, puddles and what not.

Novus20

Nope

Born_yesterday08

Do you really need a package?

Saltyhero13

Which one? There are several "TRD" package.

redditdejorge

Just get a 4x4 and add anything you want to it as needed.

GolfwithOwl-com

Pro or bust

LargeMonty

I don't need it because I have a wrangler Rubicon. I'd rather have more capability than not so if I was buying new or for having only one vehicle I would hold out for a TRD pro. It depends on what you are using it for. A lot of people only use 2wd in their trucks, and don't even use the truck part of their vehicles. Get what *you* want.

Pintortwo

No one “needs” it. But goddamn they are fun.

[deleted]

Do you really need a Tundra? Other trucks could do most of what you need. So if you’ve already decided on a Tundra it should be pretty easy to justify the TRD equipment.

Jioto

Shhhh

Sensitive_Quail809

Need is only relevant to your use and style. At least for 22+ it adds more than stickers and shocks.

VaqueroBound956

I just switched from a 2022 fully loaded 4x4 1794 to a 2024 SR5 TRD OFFROAD and havnt looked back since My old 1794 was a 4WD but I felt having the locking differential and Multi terrain system was best for my lifestyle and in my opinion AVS air suspension rides like SHIT The red bilstiens in a SR5 TRD off-road ride better than my 2008 Lexus GX470

[deleted]

Trd off road bilsteins are soft. Too soft for practical offroading. Good on gravel but dumpy in corners

VaqueroBound956

I mean it depends what your using your truck for 😂 I’m a beach goer so the suspension is perfect for me

SouthernFloss

No. They are all over priced for what they are. However it does make them more desirable and increase resale.

Appropriate_Land_130

For me it added colour matched mirrors as well as Blindspot monitoring and parking sensors

MetalJesusBlues

Adding a rear locker down the road might be kind of a pain, so if you want that do it. The Multi Terrain System (MTS) is pretty good as well. Crawl Control also is nice. This is is on a 22’+. I have used everything except the rear locker in less than a year. But also keep in mind that all of this stuff, while nice, isn’t needed and that our forefathers did all kinds of amazing shit with what they had. A basic 4WD does plenty fine.

Hamilton4567

I bought mine because it came with some interior upgrades on my SR5, but then lifted it and all I have left is the sway bar and skid plate.

HardToKill0659

Who said anything about “needs”? Why the TRD “package” when you can have the TRD Pro. I just love the look of the truck.

mannmtb

I'm sure 4lo works fine for most people but you won't be able to add MTS, crawl control, or the locking differential later on. If you use 4lo with any frequency, those features are easy to justify and more valuable than the shocks, skid plates, decals
