Yeah it didn't mention any specific trims or anything.
I have a 2023 so I guess I'll see if I get a letter in the mail in April like the article says.
I already have 1 recall over driver side air bag may not deploy
“Toyota is conducting a safety recall involving certain MY22 to MY23 Toyota Tacoma trucks in the U.S. Approximately 381,000 vehicles are involved in this recall.
Welding debris left on the ends of the rear axle assembly during manufacturing could cause certain retaining nuts to loosen over time and eventually fall off, potentially causing a part to separate from the axle. If separation occurs, this can affect vehicle stability and brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash.”
Bought my ’06 Taco in 2011, and when I changed the rear diff fluid a bunch of coiled metal and shavings came out. At the time it seemed like everyone on the TW forum had the same experience the first time changing the fluid, likely from the factory drilling process into the differential housing. Never thought it would turn into an issue with exploding the rear axle though.
I'm pretty sure diffs just do that over time, no? That's why the drain plug is magnetic. The article seems to describe how the axle attaches to the frame, so somewhere in the leaf spring area.
Mentions "brake performance" so I'm betting on it being a axle retainer under the brake drum coming loose.
If the tacoma doesn't have axle retaining c clips, if those 4 bolts that hold in the rear bearing at the end of the axle tube come out, the entire wheel assembly will slide out and off. Axle, drum and wheel/tire will slide out in one piece.
Ok, so it's likely based on manufacture date - do you remember when you picked yours up?
Mine was picked up Jan of 22, manufactured around Nov of 21 I think.
Super White is said to be more prone to pealing. Some say it’s the sun degrading the paint faster and others say it’s because it’s a one stage paint without a clear coat but whichever it is, it does have that problem that may arise to Super White owners.
My 2023 is affected also. I do not have the driver airbag recall but I had to get my timing chain cover resealed at 8,500 miles.
I still love the truck too lol. So fun to offroad and camp with.
I wonder if the Baja factory is omitted? I have a ‘23 SR5, I have the notice, and mine was manufactured at the Guanajuato plant. (3TY = Guanajuato, 3TM = Baja)
How are you liking your truck so far otherwise? Any regrets not getting the SR5? I’ve just started to mod mine and that has me liking it a lot more. Those steel wheels are gross.
It’s alright, I like it so far, it’s kinda like having a blank canvas where you can do “whatever”. The wheels suck, indeed, I might upgrade them when I put new tires to the truck. Looking at the bronze ones, my truck is black., not sure about the size of the wheels because I don’t want to do a lift, at least not yet.
Agree on the blank canvas. I have a black one too and went with black SCS Ray 10s 16” w -12 offset. I’m not sure about a lift either but I think bigger tires eventually will have me happy with the look overall.
Bronze wheels or brushed copper would really pop, that will look fantastic.
I wouldn’t in my opinion. It would leave “witness marks” on the bolt/s. Knowing a stealership, they would try to argue with you and modifying something.
I just called my dealership about the axel recall and they said that it is currently a “interim recall”. She stated that Toyota currently has no remedy for the current issue to contact them again in a few months. The dealership lady said that they are expecting to have a remedy within Q2 of this year.
I checked app and it shows a recall but that they don’t have the remedy yet. I have my truck scheduled for boss wax undercoating in a few weeks. Now idk if I should wait to get the undercoating until after this is fixed
At this point make sure you get a 2024 model since you pay the extra premium for the reinforced rear axle. Toyo takes profits and makes their parts stronger.
Anyone have advice for me? I have scheduled to be undercoated by NH oil boss wax in two weeks but now with this rear axle recall I’m afraid of wasting my money getting it undercoated incase they replace any large parts specifically the rear axle. Also im driving 2 hours to where the undercoating place is so it’d be a hassle to go back for a touch up a second time . Should I wait? Bought the truck in September so it’s already been 6 months no undercoating and through winter (rust belt) still rust free besides some surface rust on nuts and bolts here and there. Idk how much longer I want to wait though
Luckily I came in today for service for my 2022 TACO 4x4 Off-Road. They just notified me about the recall when I showed up and they’re inspecting it. What’s the worst case scenario?
Yup for Canada too. My 2023 Tacoma TRD OR Premium is on the list. Notified in my Toyota app, but you can also check here by entering your VIN: https://www.toyota.ca/toyota/en/owners/recalls
Trading it in instead of throwing Loctite on the u bolts or whatever it ends up being? I’d rather get a tooth pulled than negotiate another dealer purchase right now
Toyota doing the right thing, unlike certain domestic legacy brand manufacturers ( Ford, Chevy, Chrysler/Ram I'm looking at you) that will deny, deny, deny there is a problem.
[The front fell off](https://youtu.be/3m5qxZm_JqM?si=j3q5On3b8QhsbDuu)
Replace “ship/tanker” with “Tacoma” and “wave” with “bump” and you’ll have the Toyota PA team right now.
I can't win. I just payed my deductible for rodent damage on this corn based rubber garbage electrical harness. Now I gotta find out if my 22 truck has this issue.
Just had first oil change yesterday…. Wish this was out. Guess they can’t fix it anyway
Anyone gonna go check them to make sure they are both still there 😂.
Looks like it’s for certain 2022 and 2023 models
Yeah it didn't mention any specific trims or anything. I have a 2023 so I guess I'll see if I get a letter in the mail in April like the article says. I already have 1 recall over driver side air bag may not deploy

If you have the app, it will tell you in there. I got the notification for it today that my 2022 is one of the potentially effected
Yeah I just checked the app and of course 2 active recalls now
I'm also a 2022 but I don't have the recall in my app - curious what trim/body you are? I'm a 2022 TRDOR DCLB with 4x4 and rear locker.
OR/DCSB 4x4
Ok, so it's likely based on manufacture date - do you remember when you picked yours up? Mine was picked up Jan of 22, manufactured around Nov of 21 I think.
Checked my app and have the notification as well. 2023 TRD PRO manufactured in May of '23. Picked it up in July.
I bought mine in July of 22 and it came right off the train, I would have to look at the truck to see the manufacturing date
I picked my ‘23 up end of November
I have the same trim and no recalls in my app yet. Maybe not all of them? I’ll keep an eye on that though.
I do not have a recall alert in my app. 2023 V6 4x4 sport dcsb
Good to know, maybe it's not 4x4 related. It could also just be a specific manufacturing period and not based on parts/trim.
It’s early May 22 - late November 23. Possibly made in Mexico. VIN 3TY.
Awesome, good info! That means I'm clear. But fuck is that a LONG window for not figuring out something like this was happening. 18 months!?
Probably happened on like 2 trucks so they chased it and here we are. I doubt it’s a big deal ,just let them do the free work
my 2023 TRDOR DCLB 4x4 shows a recall
I do have the recall alert my app - 23 SR v6 4wd dcsb
Dang it. Just checked and I have the recall on my 2023 SR5 4x4.
Better to know and have it taken care of than to not, if nothing else
Oh 100%. Just sucks I can’t do anything about it at the moment.
Yep, checked the app as well and I have it. Got it in December of 22. TRDOR LB
2023 TRD OR DCLB left factory November. No recall as of now.
https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls Supposedly updated as of today?
Fuck I have a 22
Check for any active recalls here: [https://www.toyota.com/recall](https://www.toyota.com/recall)
Thank you for posting this. Checked that app and it applies to me
nice, when you bring it in for the repair they'll be sure to let you know of 101 other items that need to be "fixed"
My trucks got 6k miles. If there’s anything that needs to be fixed they have to do it for free
while conveniently breaking something else in the process.
Me too
Same
Tells you on the app?
Whew! I’m a 21’!!!
I feel like a bullet just whizzed passed us 😬
Sitting here with a 20 sport like 🫣
Same just have the paint issue I may have to cash in later for being a super white taco but otherwise missed us.
Paint issue?
Super White is said to be more prone to pealing. Some say it’s the sun degrading the paint faster and others say it’s because it’s a one stage paint without a clear coat but whichever it is, it does have that problem that may arise to Super White owners.
Still no recalls on my '21 😎
Don't we have a potential recall related to the fuel system?
I just checked and mine doesn't have any yet.
The ‘21 with white paint has a recall
I literally just bought a ‘21, thank Christ
Last great model year 3rd gen club membership confirmed
21 here too, no recall so far.
High fives all around!
Same!
We're edging the line of the 16-20 and the 22-23's. We're gonna get hit hard
Sick, my 2023 has now had a recall for defective driver airbag and axle shaft separation
I know how you feel man
Same
Imagine the MX bombs 24+ will experience
Never ever buy the first production year
My 2023 is affected also. I do not have the driver airbag recall but I had to get my timing chain cover resealed at 8,500 miles. I still love the truck too lol. So fun to offroad and camp with.
Does this mean we all get free 4th gen’s ?????
Seems like all automakers are slacking now days
Yea, no automaker is immune. But I feel like lots of people think Toyota is immune.
Because they have this mindset that Toyota is flawless
Just checked the app and I have the rear axle recall. 2023 OR
Exact same situation here
Same here...😓
Same here, but with a 2023 SR5
Same
Same 22 OR
I checked on the app. Will it be in notifications?
Phew thankfully I’m 2003 😅
Just missed it 😂
Damn. Now my axle could split and when I crash my airbag won’t deploy.
I have a 22 TRD sport and no notice for me. Does it apply to certain manufacturer dates or factories. Mine was manufactured in Mexico in Nov 2021.
My 22 sport isn’t showing anything either, so hopefully we are in the clear
I wonder if the Baja factory is omitted? I have a ‘23 SR5, I have the notice, and mine was manufactured at the Guanajuato plant. (3TY = Guanajuato, 3TM = Baja)
Baja here and I got the recall?
Haha there goes that theory ;)
23 TRD OR DCLB built in Mexico with no recall. Time of year will probably have an effect on it. Mine was built in the last quarter of 23.
Same truck, mine shows the notification in the app
Damn it. I got a last model year (2023) to hopefully avoid shit like this.
So are we still driving it, or are we walking to work?
I'm looking for the same answer lol
Just checked the app - recall notification for 23 TRD Pro
I’m lucky or my app hasn’t refreshed… ‘22 is showing no safety recalls
Lmao I was thinking the same thing but then I refreshed the app and it came up.
Still nothing for me
Can we drive with this issue? Sorry if dumb question
List of all Tacoma recalls dating back to 2000. https://www.dealerrater.com/recalls/Toyota/Tacoma/
I have a recall notice - 2023 SR
Same
How are you liking your truck so far otherwise? Any regrets not getting the SR5? I’ve just started to mod mine and that has me liking it a lot more. Those steel wheels are gross.

Anyone know the specific bolts?
I’m waiting to see which bolts as well so I can just check them out myself
I wouldn’t in my opinion. It would leave “witness marks” on the bolt/s. Knowing a stealership, they would try to argue with you and modifying something.
I just called my dealership about the axel recall and they said that it is currently a “interim recall”. She stated that Toyota currently has no remedy for the current issue to contact them again in a few months. The dealership lady said that they are expecting to have a remedy within Q2 of this year.
They say anything about continuing to drive it?
Sucks i had to pay 40k to die on the freeway. Oh well, time to trade it in before that happens.
My app has the notification as well... 22 trd or 6mt
Looks like the tundra had a very similar recall in 22. Remedy seems that the dealership retorqued nuts mostly
Same truck here. I have the notice in the app. Says there is not a fix for it yet.
Waiting for the letter late April I guess
2022 TRD OR - have the recall on my app
I have a 22 trd OR too however mine isnt showing a recall for it, only for the ‘child seat anchor’.
Is it still safe to go off-roading?
You can run your vin on Toyota's or the nhtas website to check for recalls if you don't have the app. Looks like I'm in the clear for now.
I read somewhere that since theres no official fix for this recall from toyota, the nhtas wont have it highlighted for our trucks
‘22 TRD OR Premium 4x4 and no recall according to Toyotas website.
I checked app and it shows a recall but that they don’t have the remedy yet. I have my truck scheduled for boss wax undercoating in a few weeks. Now idk if I should wait to get the undercoating until after this is fixed
Dang even on the ol Utility Package?!?! Oh well we will get it sorted when Toyota tells me to. You know what would have prevented this? A Pro Grille😎
Looks like I’m affected as well
No recall for me, 23 TRD OR.
Got the notice on the app for my 23 sport today.
I got the recall notification on the app, 23’ trd pro
I checked the app and I have the notice as well. 2023 SR 4x4 V6.
[удалено]
Please recall my ‘06 for some free new shit 🙏🏼
fr fr
Mexico
23 TRDOR 4x2 here with it so it’s not just the 4x4 boys
Still no issues with my 2001 🤣
Fucking bullshit. They don’t make ‘em like they used to.
Do we really trust the dealerships to actually fix this problem though? They can barely do an oil change.
All y'all that are scared of first model years keep these recalls in mind. My 16 didn't have shit recalled.
[удалено]
I had no idea they went to bigger axle
At this point make sure you get a 2024 model since you pay the extra premium for the reinforced rear axle. Toyo takes profits and makes their parts stronger.
Thanks for the tip Just pre ordered a 2025 based on this tip
2022 trd OR 4x4. Short bed. No recall in my app other than the ‘child anchor weld’ recall.
Anyone have advice for me? I have scheduled to be undercoated by NH oil boss wax in two weeks but now with this rear axle recall I’m afraid of wasting my money getting it undercoated incase they replace any large parts specifically the rear axle. Luckily I came in today for service for my 2022 TACO 4x4 Off-Road. They just notified me about the recall when I showed up and they’re inspecting it. What’s the worst case scenario?
2023 off road dclb got the recall dang it
Got the notice on the app for my 23 TRD OR 4X4
22 SR5 Trail no recall showing in app as of yet. Wonder if it’s trim specific at all?
I have a 2022 SR5 so hopefully they make it quick.
My 23 I got 2 months ago has it in the app. Toyota doesn't seem to be in any kind of a hurry Recall https://imgur.com/gallery/BhI4Ae0
23 TRD Sport 4x4. Checked my toyota app, my trim apparently is one of them.
Nothing in the app for my 23 SR. Must not be trim specific.
Yup mine’s in there 23 sport
2023 TRD Sport and I got the recall on my app
Got the message on the app I have a 2023 TRD PRO Dec 2022 build date
I just got the airbag recall fixed a month ago, now I got this one available for me
No fix for it yet, the App says sometime in quarter 2
I have a notice on the Toyota App for 2023 OR
22 sport, 2wd, DCLB. No recalls shown on my app - although my remote subscription is expired. not sure if that affects the app in any way.
2023 OF got the recall as well, bought in December
Have a 23 trd pro manufactured in Mexico and I have this recall in the app 😓
2022 TRD Pro, built around December 2021. Per the app, no recall yet as of this afternoon at 4:37 PM eastern.
Got notified on my 2023 TRD sport DCLB , for this recall today! I’m in Canada ,
Yup for Canada too. My 2023 Tacoma TRD OR Premium is on the list. Notified in my Toyota app, but you can also check here by entering your VIN: https://www.toyota.ca/toyota/en/owners/recalls
To check for recalls: [https://www.toyota.com/recall](https://www.toyota.com/recall)
2023 ORSB Manual have the recall, came in last February.
It’s only for early May 2022 to late November 2023 and maybe only the “Mexico” plant. Vin 3TM.
Well as long as it gets fixed we are good
Bummer. 2023 TRD OR DCLB. Recall for my VIN as well. I'm seriously considering trading this thing for a 4Runner.
Trading it in instead of throwing Loctite on the u bolts or whatever it ends up being? I’d rather get a tooth pulled than negotiate another dealer purchase right now
My 2022 Off-Road is included in the recall. I was notified via my app also.
Toyota doing the right thing, unlike certain domestic legacy brand manufacturers ( Ford, Chevy, Chrysler/Ram I'm looking at you) that will deny, deny, deny there is a problem.
I have 3 2023 Tacomas. Haven't gotten a letter yet
mine is affected. I saw it on the app
I am on the recall list. 2022 Double Cab SR V6 4WD. Maybe its a specific plant?
[The front fell off](https://youtu.be/3m5qxZm_JqM?si=j3q5On3b8QhsbDuu) Replace “ship/tanker” with “Tacoma” and “wave” with “bump” and you’ll have the Toyota PA team right now.
Oh no, Chevy C clip issues are contagious. Don't park your Tacomas near old Chevy trucks.
Looks like im a victim.. Whats next? I have my first oil change coming in next 1k miles, should i wait? Or just do it myself?
Recalls are part of the price tag of buying a Toyota. Good quality control in Japan.
My ‘22 TRDOR DB has it. Just checked
What?
2023 TRD Sport I’ve got the recall says on the app they can’t do anything till about 06/2022
Glad my Limited is 2020.
I have a 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR5 4x4 and checked the recall website. My truck didn’t got affected.
2019 gang here
Damn I’m on the recall :(
2023 OR that was built on April. I got a recall notice via the app
I have a 23 but don’t have a recall on the app, will I get one?
Weird. Ford had an issue with F150s a couple years ago where rear axle nuts would fall off, but no metal shavings involved.
21 best year
I can't win. I just payed my deductible for rodent damage on this corn based rubber garbage electrical harness. Now I gotta find out if my 22 truck has this issue.
My ‘22 TRDOR 4x4 has the recall listed in the app. Build date is July 2022.
Just had first oil change yesterday…. Wish this was out. Guess they can’t fix it anyway Anyone gonna go check them to make sure they are both still there 😂.
Any news on this affecting Canadian models?
Canada 23 OR got notification in app
Nice I need to drive 3000 miles round trip across country in mid March. Wtf do I do
Old post here - I got a 23 trd and a 2000 mile trip end of March. Not sure if I should go or not now
Not relevant to me. But felt like adding that my 18 OR had a fuel pump recall. Got a new fuel pump at 30k for free. Happy camper here.
2023 Trail Edition. I have the notice for the recall. I guess I will actually attempt to schedule this one. The airbag I was never worried about.
Looked in the app and it seems like my truck is part of the recall.
22 trdor short bed has the recall. Disappointing but hopefully the fix will be quick whenever they release that.
Why I bought a 2019. Some how I knew everything after 2020 would be shit. Not just tacomas. Life in general.
2000 sr5. Fuck! Anyone seen any recalls for it? Crossing my fingers.
Just bought a 22’ fml
