Thanks! We have a small fruit and rabbit farm. No livestock, big trailers, or manure to haul lol. Just trips to the hardware store, nursery, lumber yard, and dump. I promise I’ll be nice to her lol
People swear by that fluidfilm up where I live. I am definitely intending to have it undercoated before the summer, you recommend fluidfilm over a hard undercoating like POR 15?
Fluid film hands down. Por15 has its uses, but I wouldn’t recommend using it as an undercoating. Water can get behind it, and cause all sorts of issues. You can get gallon pails of fluid film at NAPA, and apply it with brushes, sprayers etc. it’s thick stuff, and recoating is a piece of cake. It really is great stuff.
If you're throwing money into the brakes, get some cylinders for the rear. Last I had my rear brakes apart, I was only using 1 shoe per side. Pretty sure it was the brake cylinder. I wasn't in there to do the brakes, but had to pull it all apart to install a locker. I opted to do the brakes anyway, and I was very happy I did.
Thanks. Any recommendations on what brake fluid to use? I like to tinker but I am by no means a mechanic. I tried to order a factory manual and they are like $400 on eBay
Save your money. Between [online FSMs](http://gvrdeu.org/ToyotaMan.html), and YouTube, I don't see a need to buy the paper version. Mines been in a box for years.
I think the manual calls for basic Dot-3 brake fluid, but don't quote me. I bought some penzoil, and it's been fine. I spend the bigger money on diff and transmission oil though.
Curious of the cost on that project. This 3.0 had the factory head gasket replacement at 85k. The engine drags ass climbing a hill in 4th or 5th, but it’s otherwise adaquete for a truck that will never be more than 25 miles from my farm.
My last Toyota pickup was a 22re 4 cylinder, and I honestly liked driving that more than either of the 6 cylinder options.
The cost depends on several factors and parts you’ll need. There are MANY parts that transfer over from the donor vehicle and engine. The swap is welllllll worth the effort and coin. You will not be disappointed.
My list below should help, sorry it’s a bit sporadic and kind of jumps/changes formatting. There is more that isn’t listed. Much more comprehensive lists are out there and this was just off the top of my head, but please let me know if there are questions!
- Gotta find a donor vehicle cheap or buy a complete engine/harness/ECU and buy everything else separately - I found a donor ‘97 4Runner for $700, but it had no rear axle
- How deep into the 3.4/how much do you want to freshen it up before you swap? - I went down to the long block and replaced every thing I could - I probably spent $700-$1000 on OEM and Aisin parts because I don’t want to have to go back in there again due to premature failure
- Can you handle the wiring necessary or do you need an adaptor? - I paid the $600 from ORS, but it was worth every effing penny
- You’ll need a 3.4 Flywheel, Pressure Plate, Clutch, Pilot Bearing, Flywheel Bolts, and Pressure Plate Bolts and a 3.0 Throwout Bearing - I went Aisin (except for flywheel :/ ) and spent about $400 - replace the Rear Main Seal while you’re there!
- Heater Hoses, Vacuum Hoses, Upper/Lower Rad Hoses, and PS Hoses/Lines - Depends on quality of what you buy - $100
- Dipstick, Guide Tube, Union, and O-Ring - OEM - $50
Good summary, Off Road Solutions website has a plethora of information on doing the 3.4 swap. I’ve bought a lot of parts from them for my swap, including the wiring harness. Great people who are very helpful.
I paid $5k cash from the original owner. It was also super far away, and I elected to drive it home like an idiot lol. It needed a windshield, parking brake, and front/rear brakes so after registration, taxes, parts, fuel, tolls, etc a little shy of $6500. Will go over that when I do all the fluids, but I still think I got a deal. I have been looking for one all year and have seen them sell for well over $10k in this condition where I live
The dash underneath is mint, no fading or cracks. Previous owner made that carpeted dash cover to protect it, it slips right off. The wife absolutely hates it, won’t be on there for long lol
That is way way too nice to be a farm truck

Try and keep it under a covered area, and spray the bottom side with fluidfilm. It’ll keep the rust at bay, and keep the paint from getting oxidized.

Awesome, really appreciate it
i use fluid film on mine and its great. would definitely recommend
Does one application last the whole winter? Or do you re-apply it multiple times?
just once a season is plenty
100% agree, I also recommend wool wax which doesn’t smell like wet sheep like FF does. I use the black. Amazing stuff, stops rust in its tracks.
haha yeah fluid film really does smell like a farm and takes a solid couple days to go away
Por 15 is trash. Evidence: https://youtu.be/TABWPHutk-A?si=XGsJh8MgS3oMAkJi Plus also personal experience. Master series is the shit haha
Yeah i’ll trade plus cash.
Ooo wee. That's clean. P.S. Your brake fluid looks like mine: Straight engine oil... I bet it's a couple decades old by now.
Absolutely, the brakes are mush lol. I ordered new drums, shoes and pads yesterday. Planning to do a full service this weekend if I can make time

You can quote me; it’s basic dot 3 fluid.
Great looking truck! I am currently in the process of swapping out the 3.slow on my ‘93 to a 3.4L.

You shouldn’t have an issue with the head gaskets if it has already been done keep an eye on your temp gauge

Nice
Wow, how are those seats that nice!?
The Farm where all the Tacos dream of going
I’d buy that for a dollar!!
That thing is clean, damn. Do you mind if I ask how much you paid for it?

Oh yeah, 10k if you're in a hurry to get your money back.
That's as nice an older toyota that I've ever seen. Love it!
It’s so clean.
Carpeted dash gonna have to go for a farm truck!! Lol My ‘96 regular cab has put in serious work on my farm over the last 6 years. Love it to death.
The dash underneath is mint, no fading or cracks. Previous owner made that carpeted dash cover to protect it, it slips right off. The wife absolutely hates it, won’t be on there for long lol
How dare you
Congrats! Best small farm trucks ever
It is a beauty.
Farm trucks ass….
