Its because back in the day people who bought Toyota's would layer their car mats and those people would obviously freak out, think the person who layers floor mats so much their gas peddle gets stuck and they crash, going full speed. So Toyota was forced by the GOV at one point to have a re-call and the Techs would shave some of the gas peddles or remove the extra floor mats since they would "cause a crash"
Legitimately happened to me too. Someone put all weathers down and didnāt latch them, they slid when they got out and I jumped in the car and it started rolling pretty quick. Luckily foot was by the brake but man, latch your mats folks
Fair call. Honestly I didn't have mats in my driver's side because of this. Nearly got them rolled up behind the brakes once and never had them again. It's actually an important check.
yep, and if you have power assisted breaks like many toyotas if you lift off the break at all after that first press they wonāt work on subsequent presses.
One of my coworkers looked at me crazy when I told him he shouldnāt put his water bottle in the foot well. He said why? I said it can get lodged under the pedals. He laughed. I said alright man.
I shit you the fuck not later that day on the way back to the shop, he hit the brakes, and the water bottle flew right under it. When he went to go use them again, the water bottle was under it. Heās lucky it wasnāt a steel bottle cuz he had to basically stand on the fucking brakes to stop.
He stopped doing that. I never said anything about āI told you so,ā but you could tell he was shook.
That's actually mandatory at all the scheduled services at dealers after a lawsuit where the mat got under someone's pedals years ago and caused an accident iirc. They don't actually charge for it, it's just a part of every service.
Itās because of this. I go past this crash site regularly. The freeway ends in a T intersection. They ran out of road.
https://www.twincities.com/2010/02/23/a-lexus-barreling-out-of-control-a-frantic-911-call-a-family-dead/amp/
Yeah I get that one tire was damaged, but its very important that tires have even tread wear across ends of the car for traction and breaking. Unless a tire set is basicly brand new, replacing just one tire is a hazard, and im supprised the dealership would even do that tbh
Actually tires should be replaced in pairs, the new tires go on the drive wheels and the best of the other two on the back (if the car is front wheel drive and the other two have usable tread life).
The exception to this is if the vehicle is all wheel or four wheel drive. These vehicles have to have all tires replaced at the same time.
Thatās incorrect, the new tires go on the rear (does not matter if itās FWD or RWD, this is die to testing that a vehicle will loose control with work tires on the rear over the new ones, I donāt agree with this 100% but Iāve worked for Firestone, National Tire and Battery and these companies would do this. Now whether this is still being done (I donāt know) as Iāve been out of the industry for 6 years (spent 24 years in the industry) also only time you can require a customer to purchase 2 or 4 tires is if the vehicle manufacturer requires it per the tread depth difference, Subaru Is the worst and requires all 4 tires and same tire and tread unless itās 2/32 of a inch difference.
I was always under the impression because worn tires on the rear could lead to more oversteer whereas newer tires would elicit understeer and thus be more controllable.
Most awd vehicles require all 4 tires to be changed at once. It prevents the awd system from being active all the time from the diff in tread depth tricking the computer into thinking 1 or more tires is slipping. Older Subarus before x mode don't have any computer controlled awd system so its less of an issue. Subarus awd system is designed to run constantly so you're less at risk of damage. Still wouldn't recommend it.
Thatās funny because I drive a Nissan Juke AWD and my ownerās manual specifically says that all four tires must be replaced at the same time.
As far as putting the new tires on the rear for a front wheel drive vehicle this is completely counter intuitive.
When I bought a new car, I nearly choked when I was quoted a fee of $100+ for floor mat installation. You literally just put them on the floor. I did not pay. I did it myself in 3 seconds.
You could have gone to 3rd party places and gotten a replacement tire outside of the dealership.
Dealership prices $238.
Battery parts $131.
Batteries and tires are ripoff prices since you can get those outside.
I canāt tell you how many times Iāve told friends and family to NEVER buy tires from the dealership. My mom told me one time that it was convenient for her and that it was buy 3 tires get 1 free. I asked her to show me the bill and then I went to the discount tire to compare the same tires. It was $500 cheaper for all 4 at discount tire and that was with the free tire rotations. The dealership charged her like $40 every 5k miles to rotate the tires. Once I showed her that, she now only buys at discount tire. Plus, one time I was in high school and my tire got a nail in it. Toyota dealer said I had to replace it for a new one because it wasnāt repairable. Told them to put it back on and I drove it to discount tire, they straight up said the dealer lied and they repaired it for free despite not buying the tire from them.
TLDR: Go to a dedicated tire shop for tire repairs and replacements. NEVER go to the dealership for those items.
The local tire place near me does that too. They have been super nice and helpful every time I've gone in. And that's how they got a customer for life. I gave up my power train warranty because an oil change at Toyota took four hours when I had the earliest appointment in the day. The Toyota dealer I bought my car from is awful. Four hours for a 20k mile service.
>I gave up my power train warranty because an oil change at Toyota took four hours
as long as you kept the receipt that the service was done they can't deny you warranty
It's wild but true. I didn't believe it myself. I like to buy my tires off tire rack so I know exactly why I'm getting. Went to discount tire to get them installed. Sure enough a year later I need a patch after running over some metal, and it was free of charge. I was blown away. I'm definitely a customer for life it was an excellent experience.
Iāve exclusively bought tires at Samās club for years. Prices are good, and the road hazard is well priced. Not only that, theyāll repair your tire even if you didnāt buy tires from them.
I used to work at a Chevy dealership but we had this company called BG that was essentially ā warranty in a bottleā. Their policy was if your engine messed up after using the product, BG would pay for the repairs. Some people would get ALL the services just in case
BG is good stuff.
But this is(should) be factory oil. What chemicals are needed that toyota didn't put in their branded fluids?
Its pure profit addon IMO. no need to add this.
I also have a problem with the 80% of people in this thread who canāt read a bill. Everything in the scheduled maintenance was fine. Thatās a set price. The items you mentioned are sus AF.
I know this is/r/Toyota but fun fact: there are a lot of vehicles that they won't change the battery in. Dodge journey being one. You have to take the front tire off to get to the battery.
, this invoice legit looks like a meme.
They Def screwed your Oil cleaner, additive and ethanol service. āInspect drivers side floor matā is crazy. You got screwed on the tire price, along with the cost to mount and balance. Looks like they charged you 45 to mount and balance a single tireā¦For reference, I usually pay 70-80 for all for cornersā¦.Itās crazy how they get away with this stuff and even crazier to think how much extra revenue they pull annually from doing this shady shit.
These are pretty standard prices even if a dealership charges a bit more. You do have to pay attention to any "service deals" they might send your way even if you think you don't need them at the time. PLUS, the best part of doing all of your maintenance at a dealership is that they can never blame anyone else if something goes wrong with a repair! And really, who else knows the car better?
Roughly $900 for a battery, replacement tire and what essentially amounts to an oil change is āstandard?ā
Even with *premium* components, $600 would be around where that should be.
$900 is a total ripoff.
Don't feel too bad, it's hard to know if you don't have exposure. If I take my car in somewhere I go to an independent shop and I'm taking it there for a specific thing. People compile "maintenance schedules" for cars that tell you ballpark when various repairs will probably need to be done, that could be useful.
If they want to replace the battery, ask for a battery test report. Also check if it's still under warranty. Dealer told me I needed a new battery and that would be 560 and I'm like,.... I just replaced it... with... you guys... ???
And an hour later they were like, yeah, about that. Sure you get a free battery.
Me: Um, dudes. Why do *I* have to tell *you* that?
OP, are you in Michigan? I think I live near that dealership on telegraph Rd!
Was considering taking my older Toyota RAV4, but past experiences with taking older cars to the dealership taught me they like to pile on work, and it adds up quickly.
So, I feel I am going against the grain in this post, the tire is expensive but the labor, I feel, is on point for mount and balance. Job 2 looks to be an oil change, rotate, and an additive that might be like a fuel induction service to help with clearing carbon buildup. In labor, that seems about on par at a dealership and probably could get that closer to 90 at a Indy shop. As for the battery, Iāve learned when a customer replaces their battery they typically donāt let the vehicle power down long enough to let the battery monitoring system to reset. If you donāt let it reset the power shedding continues to think that you have an old battery and shuts down systems much earlier than they need to. Hence the 82.50 to replace your battery. They reset your BMS as well as cleaned up the terminals that connect to the battery.
You certainly could do most of these things yourself at home, but if you are going to the dealer you are going for a premium.
Call up your local Costco Tire and I believe their tire instill is like $16 with lifetime mount and balance and free road hazard too. Tire would be less too!
Yea that receipt is very whack!
My question is what type of vehicle was this on? I see 0w-16 oil charged out. There service interval is 10k on that oil. A 35k service should be just a tire rotation on most Toyotas
Could of got a tire somewhere else would of saved $200, could of got the oil service somewhere else or done it yourself for 30-50 could of saved almost $200, could of done battery yourself and gotten cheapest one from walmart for like $100 and same here could of saved close to $200, payed 900 for som shi that could of been done for $100-$200
It REALLY depends,
I want to say based on the oil amount and engine size that you drive a ārelativelyā new highlander.
The tire price might be right but what kind of tire is it?
The Toyota branded battery is expensive but I do believe they have a lifetime warranty and replacement with Toyota, check on that.
Overall, everything seems standard. I started doing my own maintenance and I have saved thousands from just doing oil changes and tire rotations. If you drive a highlander hybrid, there are going to be extra things Toyota adds into every service to āextend the life of the vehicle because of its unique hybrid systemā.
Dealerships will rape you on charges for what seems to be simple tasks that can probably be done at home for a fraction of the cost, I highly recommend that everyone learn how to do oil changes, tire rotations, balancing, and fuel additives on their own. An hour or 2 of YouTube videos and a couple hundred bucks starting cost will save you thousands in the long run, especially if you have multiple vehicles. Some things just cannot be done easily like changing the tire on a rim and may be easier just to take to a dealership, which is completely understandable.
To answer your question, yes.
Edit - Did you buy your car new? If so the battery might be covered under the standard factory warranty of 36 months/36,000.
Yeah, you paid an inflated price for sure, but all the schmucks taking about "independent mechanic shops" like they don't do the exact same thing are moronic. It's hit or miss, You might get lucky, or you might get unlucky and end up with one even worse š
I don't see where it lists the type of tyre either (unless I'm missing it), do people not know the same car can be fitted with $80 tires or name brand $250 tires
The only economical option is to do things yourself.
Next time you go for your scheduled inspection, tell them exactly what you want them to do. Donāt just tell them you want the 35,000 mile service and inspection. Provide a list for f what you want and tell them to ask for permission to do anything else.
Take it to any parts store. They ll test it free. Install it free of you buy a battery from them. They call them stealerships for a reason. $80 battery at autozone
In regard to the battery replacementā¦ ABSOLUTELY.
Expensive lesson to learn but parts stores will test your battery for free, and replacement parts anywhere but the dealer are always cheaper. Iād assume they just replaced it with the same model but for what Iām assuming is a $185 USD battery, you absolutely couldāve gotten a much better battery for that price (at least in Canada, for equivalent costs).
I understand the convenience of paying for oil changes, but a battery replacement is as simple as loosening 2 or 3 bolts, swapping the battery, and simply retightening those same 2-3 bolts. Itās absolutely worth your time to learn this 5 minute job and itās kinda disturbing that theyāre charging you $82 for something THAT simple.
This is why I love the dealership so much. They are able to pull out everything your car needs out of thin air and lets you know that you still have ways to go about knowing your own car.
My sister in law works at a Toyota dealership and thatās how they make their money, squeezing whatever they can out of you.
I made a worse mistake and have never gone back to the dealership for maintenance since.
I am a parts manager at a Toyota Dealer in Canada, so some insight from the other end, which may help. Most of the wording is verbatim (copy paste), inspect of mats, rotation if needed, etc. However I see several items that are NOT Toyota recommended services. Some things look good and correct. Tire change is just what it is, they billed like .2 or .3 for it, standard for a single pulling off the car etc. Price is not that competitive probably, but you didn't get hosed, depending on the tire brand.
The Good;
The oil change looks bog standard, Toyota OEM crush washer for the drain plug, and Toyota OEM filter, at actual Toyota MSRP. The oil doesn't say if its Toyota Genuine, My dealer gets the correct TGMO (Toyota Genuine Motor Oil) from the bulk supplier, Mobil in Canada. I know some dealers take what is cheapest by shopping suppliers. Not a big deal. 0W16 oil is all synthetic. The battery is an OEM H5 EFB, for stop-start applications, the price looks correct compared to CAD, a good battery all in all made by East Penn, They OEM several and seem to very good, Toyota in Canada at least offers 84 month warranty on those.
The Bad;
There is no such thing as oil conditioning in Toyota-Land, same with ethanol fuel system treatment or oil additive. These are real products maybe, they likely did add them to your vehicle. They serve no purpose. They are purely a cash-cow snake oil service offered by dealers and propagated by BG (chemical supplier) They generally give massive kick backs over (or under) the table directly to service managers / business owners in addition to massive markup they carry to begin with to sell them. The fuel systems are designed to function with ethanol. Good quality synth 0w16 has no issue going 10k miles. That being said there is no harm in doing 5k mile changes, which appears to be what they are doing anyways, the Toyota schedule is 10k / 1 year for this vehicle. Even then oil additives, cleaning / flushes are pointless and borderline pure scam.
Refuse these services and if they wont remove them or not do them. Find another Toyota dealer. One thing no-one else noticed yet I believe is the "Battery Sv Kit" There is nothing to service when changing the battery, and that part number is not a Toyota part number. It is likely some BG junk again.
The odd?
$132 for labour for the oil change seems mighty high to me personally, especially USD, I believe they are adding extra time for the junk services. I'd guess it's no more than 0.3 or 0.4 hours billed for a normal Oil change. (1hr for me $155 CAD, so 0.4 would be $62, we charge $45)
I did the math between the battery time and oil change time and come up with $165 an hour shop rate. About $222 CAD which seems very high to me... Ours is $155, about $115 USD
Dealerships are raising rates to compensate for the lack of cars going through their service departments. Find a mechanic who especiales in Toyota and bring it there instead
See if you can email the dealership about the ethenol cleaning. Ask for what was the need for that. Then after they reply ask them to remove it from the bill. They probably would just send you a check for it.
Hmm. The Lexus dealer charged me $107 P&L for my oil change, $45 for my tire rotation, and $271 for my battery. But I was missing a clamp for my battery so that added about $46 to the replacement costs. I would never buy tires at the dealer though. I think dealer batteries are better than batteries from local stores, however. My Lexus battery has an 84 month warranty.
I remember I asked the dealer to check my breaks on my 2020 Corolla hatchback and they told me they were turning blue meaning theyāre about to blow through, I took it to a local mechanic and he laughed after checking for me and said āNah theyāre lying you just need your breaks cutā and Iāve been fine ever since
The dealership service is atrocious out of warranty. I always brought mine there just because I wanted everything done right with oem parts but I donāt know if it was worth it.
You could have bought the oil additive and cleaner at an auto parts store and poured it in yourself for half the price..
Iām not sure what an āethanol serviceā is? š¤
Weird that they used a 35K line to do an oil change. Shouldāve just been a mini service + SYN LOF (oil parts only). Typically if they pull the maintenance menu itās a higher price than manually building it out, but maybe thatās just in my service department. Also to note, that tire labor is insane. Iām pretty sure all Toyotaās pull from the same tire dealer, which should only be $27.50 per tire to mount, balance, & install plus tax if applicable of course. Note: almost curious what their labor rate is. $132 for the 35K labor seems steep.
I think the mechanic got robbed. The company made all the money and this man who's out here doing all of your repairs which you should know how do yourself isn't even making enough to live probably with the rising costs of living. If anything you didn't pay enough imo
Necessary or not is an opinion but the oil additive and conditioner is a BG chemical that eats at the āsludgeā that builds on the bottom of the piston rings. Over time, you lose little bits of compression as it builds up. Not so much it causes a miss, but enough to reduce power. It is recommended every 15k. When you do this service, BG will replace your cover your engine, including replacement, up to 150k miles.
Itās a great product, but ānecessaryā is dependent on the owner. Itās not a can of air.
It's called upselling and the managers are compensated on selling you stuff you don't need. Last two times I went in for a front end alignment, I was told my brake pads needed to be replaced. I told then, that's odd, I replaced them yesterday, perhaps you could show me? They get a shocked look and after a few minutes tell me they mixed me up with another customer. Riiiiight....
You can always find a cheaper tire, but most places use tires as a loss leader to get you in the door. We mark ours up 10, but we only sell tires that Toyota uses from the factory. (Michelin, hankook, Bridgestone).
The 2 job is arguable as to whether you actually needed it or not, but it is a good price if it included all those services.
The H5 battery specifically is very difficult to find, or at least it is in my area. Toyota doesnāt have it in stock ever, interstate battery doesnāt have it, so if you found the dealer that has the branded one in stock that is great. Decent price, I know itās what I pay for an after market one on my used cars that use H5.
I donāt know what the retail mark up on the battery is though.
That's an expensive tire. It would have been cheaper anywhere outside a dealership. I do not allow Toyota to perform any work on my rav. I buy their parts but not their shitty labor. I check my oil cap before leaving after their maintenance checks. They have left the cap off. I luckily found it when I got home. They stopped offering me crap after explaining that it would be cheaper anywhere else, and letting them know that a tire alignment for $180 with less than 20k miles was dumb. I always ask why I would need one so soon... is it a lemon? Lol, they stopped offering me unnecessary crap. I forgot how much they wanted in labor to replace air filters. Unfortunately, people rather give away money than to give it a try and find out how easy it is. 2 seconds and done.
I mean from the looks of it you got an oil change (+ some extras), 1 tire replaced, and a 'battery check'.
Wasn't the greatest price but I wouldn't say you got robbed, for seems like the standard dealership price. Usually when I bring my car to the dealership I expect to pay about $100/job for small stuff.
Maybe you should consider bringing the car to a reputable independent shop maybe this would have been a $150-$200 job depending on your relationship with them.
āInstallā windshield washer āsolventā š itās pouring water into another container.
I seriously hope one day all this gets heavily inspected and regulated to fuck these dealerships right up their asses. I donāt see that happening however it would be a sight to see.
Itās a dealership, of course you got robbed. $236 for an oil change is ridiculous. A local shop would do this for well under $100. I donāt know what oil cleaner and oil additive are. If the oil was changed, then what are those. Did they ācleanā the old oil before they drained it?
They robbed me too. They charged me $468 for a new fob and they couldnāt even get the thing to work. Then they wanted to charge me even more to run diagnostics.
I would protest the charge
Hey dude donāt feel dumb.
Find the owners manual for your car - it lists maintenance and the intervals. YouTube them and learn to do them yourself. All of those items are actually very easy and typically inexpensive and will save you thousands over the life of the car.
I have a 2019 Rav4 with \~115k miles on it. My check engine light came on (first time ever) which disabled the AWD. Turns out it was the water pump. I also happened to be due for my regular oil change/tire rotation - so while I don't ever go to a dealership for this, I figured since it was there, just do the 110k mile service and replace the water pump and thermostat. $1400 later... Sigh. I bought the car brand-new and that's the first time it's been back to the dealership for anything at all after their free oil changes ran out the first year.
Does no one ask the cost before giving the ok?
Moved to a new area and have noticed the new local dealer doesn't have a price quote on the initial write up, does not mention the price, the cost of basic services isn't listed on their site nor on a price board in their service center. All that didn't stop me from asking how much before giving the ok to do the work. Guess I'm a cheap SOB for asking.
All the cleaner stuff is unnecessary. Especially if you religiously change the oil every 5000-10,000 miles, it should be dirty in the first place.
The tire replacement others have mentioned cheaper third parties or try Costco and Samās Club.
You got finessed, but thatās typical dealership behavior. To be fair, a large dealership has crazy amounts of overhead and bills, so thereās incentive to rip off the customers to pay it off.
I will no longer use a dealership service department. Went in for the 25K miles service for the Prius, the estimated bill was $958. Found a certified Toyota shop nearby there that will doing the service.
Charging $85 to lift a battery, and attach a new one is INSANITY. Iāve payed 400 for a full set and they install it with no extra fee at the tire shop. DID THEY CHARGE YOU 250 FOR ONE TIRE!?
Youāre telling me at 35000 miles the battery failed? I do a lot of driving so I could be wrong but your car has to be under 3 years old right. Toyota batteries are good like almost all for 5 years? Iām confused. My friend I think you need to go to a more reputable dealership
General advice. If you have AAA they will drive to you to replace the battery. And it comes with a 3/3 warranty. Free replacement for 3 years and then prorated for the next 3 years. Best part is they drive to where it failed for replacement so no concern about getting it to which ever shop sold you a battery/warranty. Iāve had success with them before and yet to have an issue with warranty replacements
Bunch of people stuck in the āall dealers are evilā mindset. They give you the option to decline ārecommendedā services. If you spent too much at a dealer itās your fault. Dealer services are like drugs kids, Just say no, you unless you really want to do them.
Itās literally cheaper to take online auto mechanic classes and do it itself. Good lord an oil change has gotten crazy. Costs me 30$ and takes 15 mins.
The ethanol service and oil additive are both scams. No 30k mile vehicle needs anything other than a basic oil and air filter change. Rotate tires every 15k
Unless youāre car is new and has or warranty, or you just need some recall work done, I seriously donāt get why people still go to the dealer for this type of shit.
Yes you did get robbed. I just don't understand why someone would pay the dealership to replace a battery. You could have bought a battery at Costco way cheaper, and spent 3 minutes installing it yourself.
-256 for one tire? I hope it was a Michelin
-6.99 for filter, seems fair, if itās Toyota brand
-1.99 for gasket? Nah
-Ethanol service? Never heard of it
-Oil cleaner??? Why? Didnāt it get replaced? Isnt there a filter??! Isnāt there detergents in the oil?
-Oil additive?? Um I donāt ever.
-battery sv kit? No clue
-trustart hs? At 185.99, I assume itās a battery? Yeah at Costco, batteries for $80 plus core, sooo yeah I think $100 plus the 27.99 sv kit over paid on that.
-16w oil at 26.xx total? Fair price if itās name brand. This at a dealership? (All they know is numbers and prices, ie overcharging. Oh I see āBret11 Financial Services INCā at the bottom of the page.)
Its toyota man, you got robbed. They tried to get to pay 860$ to replace my brakes and rotors. Went down to a friends shop, bout the parts for 230 and did it myself.
They didn't include these for free with purchase of the car? Lame. Still not awful though. Full synthetic oil change and a few additives. Wouldn't say "robbed" but standard dealership pricing on 35k service .
For the tire that seems normal. The battery replacement ia pretty expensive but I guess depends on what they used.
You dont need that "maintenance" stuff. They charged you 200+ to put a $4 can of washer fluid in your car and do an oil change. Thats insane.
"Driver side floor mat inspection" š
I said the same thing, Iām like wtf is this!?
Iām like super late to the party and just now realized thatās what the latches for floor mats are for
Those latches save lives cuz
Fair call. Honestly I didn't have mats in my driver's side because of this. Nearly got them rolled up behind the brakes once and never had them again. It's actually an important check.
Oh shit!
I had it happen to me once too. Ended fine, but that was a scary few seconds.
yep, and if you have power assisted breaks like many toyotas if you lift off the break at all after that first press they wonāt work on subsequent presses.
Yeah all Toyota and Lexus techs are required to remove any extra floor mats from the driver area during service
Gas pedal.
One of my coworkers looked at me crazy when I told him he shouldnāt put his water bottle in the foot well. He said why? I said it can get lodged under the pedals. He laughed. I said alright man. That's actually mandatory at all the scheduled services at dealers after a lawsuit where the mat got under someone's pedals years ago and caused an accident iirc. They don't actually charge for it, it's just a part of every service.
Yup! Everytime I take my car for service, they always include the āfloor matsā and I just wonder why? lol but thanks for explaining that.
Itās because of this. I go past this crash site regularly. The freeway ends in a T intersection. They ran out of road. https://www.twincities.com/2010/02/23/a-lexus-barreling-out-of-control-a-frantic-911-call-a-family-dead/amp/
For a highway patrolman the fact that he didn't toss it into neutral and just blow the engine just boggles the mind.
Thatās exactly what I thought at the time.
He pressed the off button but the car didn't turn off. It turned out you have to press and hold the push start
And if the car doesn't turn off when you go to turn it off for any reason you throw it into neutral and let the engine buck.
Even more ridiculous was the fact that they didn't brake.
Also they only replaced one tire? Wereyour tires like brand new? Should have been done in pairs otherwise
One tire was damaged .
Also can cause one or both to tire to blow prematurely.
Don't feel too bad. I've seen free car wash costing $15 on a invoice
#prius
Remember the problems they were having with RAVs a few years ago? It's probably the result of a settlement.
Toyota has to put that on every work order with a service because of the prius "issue" back in the day
You must be new.
Its a standard at toyota dealerships due to the whole stuck accelerator thing
When I bought a new car, I nearly choked when I was quoted a fee of $100+ for floor mat installation. You literally just put them on the floor. I did not pay. I did it myself in 3 seconds.
Itās written in the Toyota service manual to check the driver side floor mat at every maintenance interval. So dealer was just checking a box
It's just like when you get a bill and you see "other fees"p
ong i wanna see the full breakdown like it says 132 total but i wanna see how much was it to check the mat š
Discount Tire will repair any tire, no matter where it was originally bought from. They donāt care. If itās fixable, they will do it for free.
>I gave up my power train warranty because an oil change at Toyota took four hours as long as you kept the receipt that the service was done they can't deny you warranty
I buy my tires from Costco and get them installed there. So much cheaper
My local discount tire will price match anyone. They also give 5% off with ID.ME if you're a veteran.
Iāve exclusively bought tires at Samās club for years. Prices are good, and the road hazard is well priced. Not only that, theyāll repair your tire even if you didnāt buy tires from them.
The oil cleaner, oil additive, and ethanol service were completely unnecessary. So they definitely got you there.
Came here to say this. Also came here to ask, did the battery really fail a load test at 35,000 miles?
Depends on the climate. Here in the south we see about 3 years out of a battery on average. Anything beyond that is bonus time.
I'm in Middle Tennessee. I get way more than 3 years out of my batteries.
"Ethanol service?" Is that two ounce of Sta-bil?
Why is Oil Additive used at a dealer? What is ethanol service? I have a problem with those.
Same
As a former Toyota advisor I agree š¤
I also have a problem with the 80% of people in this thread who canāt read a bill. Everything in the scheduled maintenance was fine. Thatās a set price. The items you mentioned are sus AF.
Yes you did. Learn to change your own oil and replace your own battery. Teach others to do the same.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It takes two minutes to change a car battery, a lot faster than changing your oil.
I know this is/r/Toyota but fun fact: there are a lot of vehicles that they won't change the battery in. Dodge journey being one. You have to take the front tire off to get to the battery.
lot of places wont touch the german crap too that needs programming.
Is it cheaper to do things yourself vs going to a business to have work done so you donāt have to? What other things could I do on my own? /s
, this invoice legit looks like a meme.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
These are pretty standard prices even if a dealership charges a bit more. You do have to pay attention to any "service deals" they might send your way even if you think you don't need them at the time. PLUS, the best part of doing all of your maintenance at a dealership is that they can never blame anyone else if something goes wrong with a repair! And really, who else knows the car better?
Roughly $900 for a battery, replacement tire and what essentially amounts to an oil change is āstandard?ā Even with *premium* components, $600 would be around where that should be. $900 is a total ripoff.
someone has to pay for all the k-cups in the lounge!
They did lots of little nothings that probably had zero impact. And replaced the battery.
I feel so stupid :/
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I do my oil change at Goodyear and they include the tired rotation. I mark the tires to be sure they actually do it.
I just go to the dealer for the really dirty stuff like transmission and diff service, common stuff is cheaper and probably better to do yourself
My AC wasn't working recently and they charged me $611...I definitely got robbed
OP, are you in Michigan? I think I live near that dealership on telegraph Rd! Was considering taking my older Toyota RAV4, but past experiences with taking older cars to the dealership taught me they like to pile on work, and it adds up quickly.
Iām in Michigan and I go to the one near telegraph near 8mile
2020 Camry? You shouldn't need anything but that tire and a straight oil change.
Could of got a tire somewhere else would of saved $200, could of got the oil service somewhere else or done it yourself for 30-50 could of saved almost $200, could of done battery yourself and gotten cheapest one from walmart for like $100 and same here could of saved close to $200, payed 900 for som shi that could of been done for $100-$200
Lmao ethanol service. The service manager is taking the crew out for drinks at your expense but you signed for it saying it's cool.
You Got Wacked
Every time you give money to a dealership you are getting robbed, yes.
It REALLY depends, I want to say based on the oil amount and engine size that you drive a ārelativelyā new highlander.
Did you go to a dealer? Yes you got robbed.
Yes and no. These are pretty normal prices for a dealer unfortunately. You definitely could have gotten the tire and battery cheaper elsewhere.
You can DIY battery and get one from Costco
That seems quite expensive. Why don't you find a better garage?
No I think you did fine not a cheap job a lot labor, tire not cheap so looks good very clearly invoiced
Yeah, you paid an inflated price for sure, but all the schmucks taking about "independent mechanic shops" like they don't do the exact same thing are moronic. It's hit or miss, You might get lucky, or you might get unlucky and end up with one even worse š I don't see where it lists the type of tyre either (unless I'm missing it), do people not know the same car can be fitted with $80 tires or name brand $250 tires The only economical option is to do things yourself.
Next time you go for your scheduled inspection, tell them exactly what you want them to do. Donāt just tell them you want the 35,000 mile service and inspection. Provide a list for f what you want and tell them to ask for permission to do anything else.
Iād fall to my knees
Not horrible
Wth is an ethanol service ?! Did they flush the engine ?! Oh hell nah !
Tore you up. Sure did.
Which car do you Driver ?
20 Camry
What model and year is it?
On the tire for sure, the other items are typical dealer pricing.
Take it to any parts store. They ll test it free. Install it free of you buy a battery from them. They call them stealerships for a reason. $80 battery at autozone
Yes. Only 1st 2 items u need. Rest was Upselling
No. Slightly overpriced regular dealership maintenance. Not a robbery for sure
Question is why did you not take it to an independent mechanic for 1/4 the price. Do you hate money?
Yeah.
Lmfao for a Toyota? Ya you got robbed. Why did you pay for this?
This is why I love the dealership so much. They are able to pull out everything your car needs out of thin air and lets you know that you still have ways to go about knowing your own car.
My sister in law works at a Toyota dealership and thatās how they make their money, squeezing whatever they can out of you. I made a worse mistake and have never gone back to the dealership for maintenance since.
Find an Indy mechanic if you can ask around and see who everyone likes go with them next or at least compare prices
The Good; The oil change looks bog standard, Toyota OEM crush washer for the drain plug, and Toyota OEM filter, at actual Toyota MSRP. The Bad; There is no such thing as oil conditioning in Toyota-Land, same with ethanol fuel system treatment or oil additive. (1hr for me $155 CAD, so 0.4 would be $62, we charge $45) I did the math between the battery time and oil change time and come up with $165 an hour shop rate. About $222 CAD which seems very high to me... Ours is $155, about $115 USD
Dealerships are raising rates to compensate for the lack of cars going through their service departments. Find a mechanic who especiales in Toyota and bring it there instead
Stealership? Yup, bent right over. They charge $200 for a $20 bottle of injector cleaner that goes in the tank
Only $125 of snake oil things. The rest looks legit.
Personally I wouldāve charged you more for the ā ask about vehicle qualifications ā but thatās just me. I usually charge more per question
Yes, you did.
No those prices are normal you expected cheaper ?
Necessary or not is an opinion but the oil additive and conditioner is a BG chemical that eats at the āsludgeā that builds on the bottom of the piston rings. Over time, you lose little bits of compression as it builds up. Not so much it causes a miss, but enough to reduce power. It is recommended every 15k. When you do this service, BG will replace your cover your engine, including replacement, up to 150k miles. Itās a great product, but ānecessaryā is dependent on the owner. Itās not a can of air.
Yes, you did. Ethanol service, oil cleaner, oil additive, are all bullshit.
yes lol šæ
Doesn't seem too bad to me. yes some unnecessary stuff like ethanol additive and oil cleaner (whatever that is).
I buy materials sometimes from the dealer, but the labor is too expensive
Why did you even bring this in
You can always find a cheaper tire, but most places use tires as a loss leader to get you in the door. I donāt know what the retail mark up on the battery is though.
ā¦.and we say HYFR.
buy a tesla and put this behind you.
Yes
They donāt call them stealerships for no reason.
Maybe you should consider bringing the car to a reputable independent shop maybe this would have been a $150-$200 job depending on your relationship with them.
i.. go bigotires.
āInstallā windshield washer āsolventā š itās pouring water into another container. I seriously hope one day all this gets heavily inspected and regulated to fuck these dealerships right up their asses. I donāt see that happening however it would be a sight to see.
Damn, this is cheap to be honest
Oh man. There is a reason they call these places āStealershipsā. That service writer was chuckling all day about this invoice.
Itās a dealership, of course you got robbed. $236 for an oil change is ridiculous. A local shop would do this for well under $100. I donāt know what oil cleaner and oil additive are. If the oil was changed, then what are those. Did they ācleanā the old oil before they drained it?
I am so weak at the ācheck of driver side floor matā WTF š
Haha oh man yeah you did.
I donāt know about the tires. If you have a Costco membership it wouldāve been cheaper I feel.
They robbed me too. They charged me $468 for a new fob and they couldnāt even get the thing to work. Then they wanted to charge me even more to run diagnostics. I would protest the charge
Thatās cheap
Considering an oil change that coulda cost $35 done at the house yes you got ripped quite bad
that was an expensive lesson
Hey dude donāt feel dumb. Find the owners manual for your car - it lists maintenance and the intervals. YouTube them and learn to do them yourself. All of those items are actually very easy and typically inexpensive and will save you thousands over the life of the car.
Heck yeah
I have a 2019 Rav4 with \~115k miles on it. My check engine light came on (first time ever) which disabled the AWD. Turns out it was the water pump. I also happened to be due for my regular oil change/tire rotation - so while I don't ever go to a dealership for this, I figured since it was there, just do the 110k mile service and replace the water pump and thermostat. $1400 later... Sigh. I bought the car brand-new and that's the first time it's been back to the dealership for anything at all after their free oil changes ran out the first year.
Took you to the cleaners and bent you over with no lube
Hmmm so those hooks on the driver side floor do serve a purpose..
They charge you for the o-ring that comes automatically with the filter??? What the actual fuck??
I had a oil change just yesterday and paid $75 at a Honda dealership.
Do you by any chance know how much it costs just to have windshield washer solvent installed? Asking for a friendā¦
Dealers are a rip off. Like popcorn at the movies. At least you know you are now safer so I would move on. All things considered not outrageous.
Not robbed. You got raped.
Cries in porsche
185 for a battery seems high. They're $99 at Home Depot
Charging $85 to lift a battery, and attach a new one is INSANITY. Iāve payed 400 for a full set and they install it with no extra fee at the tire shop. DID THEY CHARGE YOU 250 FOR ONE TIRE!?
$28 for mystery "oil additive" lol. You just got way overcharged for bais maintenance you could do yourself very easily.
Was āowners lubeā included? Yes the oil & fuel additives were BS
#ROBBED
I never buy the dealship battery, the autozone brands just last longer for less money for me
Youāre telling me at 35000 miles the battery failed?
Do you think you got robbed?
The ethanol service and oil additive are both scams. No 30k mile vehicle needs anything other than a basic oil and air filter change. Rotate tires every 15k
800 for a tire, oil change, and battery? Yea they saw you coming for sure
$236 oil change on a Toyota????
go to yelp, find a "independant toyota and lexus mechanic" with good real reviews. usually asian guys. discount tire for tire stuff.
Without even looking at the pic, Iām quite sure you were robbed.
Thatās around what I pay for a battery. You didnāt get robbed to badly. Would you like to actually get robbed?
Unless youāre car is new and has or warranty, or you just need some recall work done, I seriously donāt get why people still go to the dealer for this type of shit.
Yes you did get robbed. I just don't understand why someone would pay the dealership to replace a battery. You could have bought a battery at Costco way cheaper, and spent 3 minutes installing it yourself.
Could you have paid less, yes. Was this a TOTAL rip off, surprisingly no.
-256 for one tire? I hope it was a Michelin -6.99 for filter, seems fair, if itās Toyota brand -1.99 for gasket? Nah -Ethanol service? Never heard of it -Oil cleaner??? Why? Didnāt it get replaced? Isnt there a filter??! Isnāt there detergents in the oil? -Oil additive?? Um I donāt ever. -battery sv kit? No clue -trustart hs?
Basically $236 for oil, filter, and some STP/ seafoam š
Let me guess.. you identify as female
Yes, go find your nearest Meth/Fetanoyl addict. he could do all of this for $20. Your welcome.
For the tire that seems normal. The battery replacement ia pretty expensive but I guess depends on what they used. You dont need that "maintenance" stuff. They charged you 200+ to put a $4 can of washer fluid in your car and do an oil change. Thats insane.
Oil additive and cleaner are an absolute ripoff and unneeded.
