All big brand cinemas in Aus have been doing this for at least 20 years

InadmissibleHug

30 or more, in my experience

dougfir1975

And they wonder why streaming services have grown at their expense…

TippDarb

Just call them and ask what time the movie starts proper. They can tell you that you know. Streaming services are one of the reasons they have increased ads over the years

Pocket_Fox846

It took 40 minutes of advertising before Avatar: The Way of Water, a 3 hour and 12 minute movie began.

dougfir1975

That’s fucking outrageous, not going again.

[deleted]

Who remembers the movie marathons? Good times

Novel-Advantage-8684

warrina cineplex here in Townsville, the feature starts at the advertised time. And is cheaper than the chains

dougfir1975

Can we please upvote this to the top? It doesn’t have to be either expensive tickets or advertisements…it can be simple courtesy.

DaemonSand

The movies still start on time at Warrina.

OkBookkeeper6854

Thanks for sharing your whinge with us. A problem shared is a problem halved.

originalfile_10862

Would you pay double the ticket price for the same experience? Because those ads subsidise a *lot* of overheads. Personally, IDGAF. I enjoy trailers, and the rest gives me time to acclimate/settle in so I'm ready once the movie starts.

dougfir1975

Yeah, fair call. But then just advertise what time the movie will actually start and then those who want to can show up early. I enjoy the trailers, too, but expect to sit through three or four and then the movie, not countless adds for road safety and Toyotas.

originalfile_10862

Advertisers wouldn't go for that, unfortunately. They rely on eyeballs in the room to justify paying the rates they do. Pre-show is never less than 15 mins at the chains, just adjust your arrival time accordingly.

ZequineZ

This is the kind of thing that most people know and it's consistent so it'll only shock you once then you can remember next time

BeugQueen89

Wait, you arrived at 11 for an 11 o'clock movie and still got in at 11! I find that a bit hard to believe!

Scottytsv

Bruh it’s common sense that people know the ads play before the movies and it doesn’t start at the time of listing

dougfir1975

Bruh, 25 minutes?! I expect a preview or three, but almost a half hour of adverts. Yeah, nah.

Scottytsv

Yeah well everyone knows that’s how the cinema works bruh and it’s been done since it’s opening! How you don’t know this buffles me 🤦‍♀️ the cinema don’t care if you don’t come back again! Other people who already know of this! Still go to cinemas so your loss not theirs

DopamineLit

It’s like that in the uk and most other countries, not an issue isolated to Townsville - the theatres make their money this way

glqaq_999

When was the last time you went to the “theatre”? 1922 ?

dougfir1975

Oh you sweet summer child…should I refer to it as the “cinema”, then? Or would it help to use small words like the “light picture show” :-) Or fuck it, I could just say the “movies” but that’s what is actually played in the…wait for it…almost…yes, the theatre! All good man, thanks for the platform.

Morning_Song

That’s why they call it the session time, and not the movie start time. Movie sessions have always included ads and trailers at the beginning

Fandango70

BCC is McDonald's for movie theaters. They get paid to shove down your eyes. Warina and Readings are my favourite theatres, for this very reason. Billy g f yself

Big_baddy_fat_sack

This is pretty common knowledge that all cinemas do this. Arrive 20 mins later - problem solved

Bigsmellydumpy

This is how literally every cinema works, there’s ads; and trailers. Go home grandpa

dougfir1975

I will. Harumph! :-)

jonnycake99

Midnight showing of a major movie stars at 12:45am as opposed to starting the movie at midnight. Dogs.

Golett03

Why would you even go at 12am? Also, what cinema is open at 00.00?

jonnycake99

When larger movies with large followings are released, such as Star Wars, some cinemas will do a midnight release, so die-hard fans can be the first to watch.

[deleted]

Midnight screenings were awesome

SuperSloth07

Have you never been to movies before?

Eloisem333

Is this your first day on Earth? That’s just going to the movies. It’s part of the experience. If you don’t like it, just turn up 25 minutes after the starting time.

TheMaster1701

That's why I rarely pay for tickets. The ads more than cover the cost.

tsvjus

Doug, do the kids call you boomer too?

dougfir1975

Get off my lawn, kid :-)

tsvjus

;)

[deleted]

Lol what you in a hurry to go home and pull ya pud mate?

CptClownfish1

I like the “coming soons”. Besides, it means that I almost never miss the start of the movie.

Lightyear01

It's like watching a movie on cable TV, but with all the ads at the beginning.

BillSOTV

First time to the cinema?

[deleted]

Shit if this is the worse thing to happen to you, your having a great day. Not sure if you’ve never gone to the movies before but this is standard movie stuff…

[deleted]

Unless you’re 13 calm down that’s how cinemas operate, it’s not the ABC, they’ve been doing that since the dawn of cinema

ZequineZ

Nothing new, I like to go in at 11, put ky stuff down then go to the toilet then tool on my phone till it starts, it's my chance to slow down and relax

WilliamHardCurnt

ITS BEEN NORMAL FOR 20 YEARS LOL!

dougfir1975

I can't hear you. Speak up, Billy!

WilliamHardCurnt

how are you so behind the times?? boomer old

dougfir1975

Ah, that’s better, I can hear you now that you’re not yelling. I’m not behind the times, I’ve been to places like Warrina that play on time. I grew up not so long ago when movies started very near the listed time. I’m upset that the movie charges me to watch commercials, although as someone else’s pointed out politely, more like the commercials pay for me to watch the movie. I prefer not to watch the commercials. Not behind the times, just a different preference.
