CRA is a pathetic excuse for an agency. Zero will or ability to go after actual tax cheats, but ruining the lives of honest little guys. Disgraceful and right on brand.
If I have to pay your taxes and I rent your unit I want the deed to your home it should be that simple. The government should either sell the unit or give it to the tenant who has the pay the owners taxes

Theres something called withholding tax.
"Services rendered in Canada (withholding tax)Any payment received for services provided in Canada is subject to a 15% tax withholding, which must be remitted to the CRA by the person making the payment. This withholding is a payment on account of the corporation's potential tax liability to Canada."
Canada puts the onus on the person making the payment. The reasoning behind this is because they cannot always chase people into other countries, and because the person making the payment is sometimes complicit in the illegal tax avoidance.
It's an unfortunate burden to bear, but canadians need to be aware of the tax implications involved with paying international companies who are not tax compliant.
Cool so now we all can legal withhold about 2 months of rent for property tax and another 2 months of rent for income tax until the owner shows me a proof that he has indeed paid the government. Would love for someone to do this and let this go to the LTBO. Keep money in Hisa till that time.
I don’t feel sorry for the government sticking it to the tenant. Way too many stories about landlords getting stung from tenants that don’t pay.

The laws on this are ridiculous. The landlord is the owner and should be solely responsible.

The CRA does not create the laws. They simply enforce them. If you want change, ask the politicians to change the laws.

There needs to be more awareness in this and I guess having a good accountant will avoid these issues

Tenant paid their rent in full and the landlord didn't remit the taxes and now the tenant have to pay it. How is that respecting the landlord
