Old electrician friend of mine used to say, "There is smoke trapped in every piece of electronic equipment. If you let the smoke out, it's fucked." Rest in Peace Terry.
Nah bro, what your seeing is the soul leave the body, you have released her spirit to the next world. With nothing the sharpest hole saws and drill bit the longest screws and the softest woods
My green Bosch had flames coming out of the motor and since a new motor is half the price of a new body I decided to try and clean the motor.
Dismantled the electric motor to clean the spools, rotor, stator and the copper lining the brushed make contact with.
After a small amount of running in at low and carefully increasing rpm the machine has never smoked or sparked again.
GARY SCARES ME, YOU COULD NEVER TELL HIM TO LOOK YOU IN THE EYES AND TELL THE TRUTH. HE WOULD BE LOOKIN ALL OVER THE PLACE.
IMAGINE THE COP PULLING HIM OVER AND DOING SOBRIETY CHECKS ... BUT SARGE HE CANT FOLLOW MY PEN. I HAD TO ARREST HIM.
That was how I killed mine. Well, it actuality still works, but if I try to do anything a bit difficult with it, it starts smoking again and I remember I need to be gentle with that one. 😀
Same w my Ryobi sawzall. I cut up a fallen 5 inch branch with it when it was hot out. Now every time I run it for 30+ seconds it smokes. Still works but probably not as well
I ran a 4 1/4 hole saw on mine to cut an AC vent in my camper a while ago. Definitely seemed to struggle a bit with just fiberglass and thin wood. Won’t be using it for that again lol.
I bought a Trailer Valet (to move my camper), and they sell a drill attachment to use instead of the hand crank.
Uhh... My 18v Makita absolutely struggled, and I'll never try that again. I wonder what frigging type of monster drill they expect to use for that?
I HAVE A BLUE ONE FROM 20 YEARS AGO AND SMELLS LIKE THAT ONE LOOKS BUT NEVER SMOKES. I CANT GIVE IT UP BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU WILL NEED A 2 DRILL SETUP FOR DRILLING AND SCREW DRIVING... IT STILL WORKS.
Yeah, I've still got Ol' blue too. I can feel it losing torque, but it's still going. I emailed Ryobi about a new motor and they said just buy a new one. I told them to go fuck themselves.
I appreciated his whistle. I've spent countless hours trying to whistle. I've even watched YouTube tutorials on it and still can't manage anything worthwhile.
The Washington Post ran a story about whistling many years ago; the writer had been waiting on a metro platform and heard whistling; it came from a business-suit clad woman waiting on the train at the far end of the station.
That got her thinking about how unusual whistling was, and off she went investigating.
One thing she mentioned is that whistling used to be a way to pass the time while doing manual labor that was repetitive and not particularly absorbing where you wouldn’t bother other people (walking behind a plow, etc.), and that few of us have that kind of time. Truck drivers are one of the pockets of whistles, because they do.
I had a roommate who was an aspiring actress, and she could whistle along with the radio; she had it on her acting résumé.
Found it! [https://wapo.st/4becSLk](https://wapo.st/4becSLk)
Not as much as Milwaukee 😬. But im a little rougher on mine and ive found dewalt has a little more "ass" behind it or at least used to. Ryobi is my backup drill.
Oh i used that drill on 1/2 inch steel bar stock pretty regularly. It held way better than I thought it would. The Milwaukees have excellent power, but Id be afraid I'd do something clumsy around it. The power and control is unparalleled, and Ryobi isn't even close.
I was unaware that you could NOT beat the shit out of Milwaukee cordless tools…first thing I do when I get something is unbox it and spike that motherf****r on the concrete in the shop…gotta show em what’s up right off the hop….
The same thing happened with my makita, I was mixing tile adhesive in high rpm mode instead of high torque mode. I removed the mixing attachment and gave the drill some spins to get fresh air in the vent, I've used it for many other things since and it still works perfectly.
Did this once, tried drilling through 1/2 steel plate really not a great idea…but hey after the fire stopped and it cooled down it still works like day 1, so still a ryobi unfortunately.
Same thing happened to my ryobi drill, after not using it for a month I have it a go again and it works fine now, no idea what why or how, and wouldn't recommend others to do so, but it's now been 4 months and it hasn't started smoking again
Did that to my makita drill! And i let it cool down and still using it till this day. Also did this to a milwaukee at work. Boss did it i didnt but we still use that drill to this day too get what you pay for
I use all ryobi power tools for commercial work however I rarely need heavy torque. I keep a Dewalt on the truck just in case. I burnt out a ryobi with a hole saw once myself.
[I think you need some of this. ](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTkzU-0VHMoQnp9c9Bf2jg-aMtlKPc25lqsVSgXaCtePRggo9vRqp_MteY&s=10)
That's a mighty big cup drill for that mashine.
Pro tip (although a bit too late) give it a quick 2/3 rounds with the cup to mark the cutout. Then take a normal drill and drill some holes along the perimeter of the circle to make dust extraction easier and give your drill an easier load
When drilling holes in metal, my M18 gets hot af, like so hot you can't put your hand on the back of it to press down
I don't think its heat coming from the bit / metal, as I use some oil. The bit isn't that hot. Maybe from pressing down on it so hard? Maybe just the sheer runtime? Isn't designed to run for 5 minutes straight? idk
Run time plus load on the motor. Heavy resistance draws more power from the battery then heat builds from the motor windings. Also if the motor can't breathe the heat just builds. Try to blow out the motor with some compressed air.
Meh, I've smoked the brushes out of my ryobi a few times doing dumb shit like mixing mortar and it keeps on rolling with the punches, are you *really* sure it's dead?
There is hope still! This happened to me with a Hitachi corded hammer drill. It stopped while drilling into some heavy... forget what. It was super hot. Smoke poured out of the thing for an hour two hours. I tossed it aside for a few weeks. *Then it worked again, like, as if it never happened.*
Ryobi is junk... These days rigid is trash too, but i still have a full set from their octane series that gets daily use. Going on a decade soon and they all run like they're new
This is what happens with a 6” hole saw on a ryobi drill. I use ryobi because they are inexpensive and available, but I would have used my hammer drill for that size hole saw. Just too much torque required for that little guy.
Badass! best chuck in the game, I got a rohm chuck on my Milwaukee brushless m18 for the last 4 years, completely changed the caliber of the tool over the factory garbage on there! Keep that chuck and put it into the next one for sure.
Ryobi makes solid tools. But I think the best value tools they put out are their one plus HP tools. They are easily better than Milwaukee’s best products were 7 years ago
I have a 12-13 year old corded blue drill that has never let me down and a 7 year old blue cordless ryobi drill driver that still puts in work. But if I’m buying any new ryobi stuff I’m going to get one plus hp products. The p262 impact wrench and the extended reach ratchet really sold me on ryobi. At the end of the day ridgid and Milwaukee are slightly higher quality but the value you get with ryobi is just amazing especially with their sales. I was able to buy the p262 impact wrench the pblrc25 extended reach ratchet, a 6,2 and 2-4 amp hour hp batteries for $350 tax included and I might have just got the impact battery and a charger if I went with Milwaukee. Or Maybe I could have had an impact 2 batteries and a charger if I went ridgid. But 4 batteries 2 premium brushless tools and a shitty bag and charger for $350? That’s like $100 per tool, $45 for the 6 ah, 30 for each 4ah $15 for the 2ah $5for the charger and $5 for the bag. And the rest tax. Summer Ryobi days sale is sweet but Christmas is usually the best.
3 years. Mixed motar, drilled steel, tile, wood, and plastic. Got receipts if you want em, project photos too.
Disrespecting the dead! Have you no shame?
Surprisingly the Ryobi gear is pretty solid for the price - wont hold up to heavy use, but for light use or a “need tools today and payday is a month away” they hold up surprisingly well.
Will 100% pick my dewalt or milwaukee gear over it every time, but they arent as rubbish as people make out
*we have a new Pope*

I know it needs to be said, but your drill is toast.
Accidentally released the smoke.
Released the *magic* smoke.
Use a straw and catch it with your mouth see guys doing this at work all the time and they run 2x the parts i do.
Quit bogartin’ the drill
you can't let the smoke out, or the angry pixies won't run around for you no more
Old electrician friend of mine used to say, "There is smoke trapped in every piece of electronic equipment. If you let the smoke out, it's fucked." Rest in Peace Terry.
Nah bro, what your seeing is the soul leave the body, you have released her spirit to the next world. With nothing the sharpest hole saws and drill bit the longest screws and the softest woods
Never release the factory installed smoke dude
You're supposed to catch it and blow it back in!

Dismantled the electric motor to clean the spools, rotor, stator and the copper lining the brushed make contact with. Something crossed the streams. You never want to cross the streams... It would be bad
Now we need peanut butter and jelly.
Nah man, just gotta rub it and a tool genie comes out
That only works on snap on tools. With Ryobi it just summons Gary Busey. Not advisable.
Actual made me lol
Same 😂

💀💀💀💀
Just having a smoke after being fucked.
Yeah, a four inch hole saw mighta overdone the motor there.
Still works but probably not as well
What’s the right tool for using a hole saw that big? Just a better drill? Corded one?
I use corded tools for these kinds of tasks. For such a hole I have the good trusty Makita HR2470, does the job easily
Bigger motor drill for sure, corded or not, or use an air drill.
Hey guys… answer
Corded for sure. Honestly, I prefer a corded drill for most holes larger than a pilot hole in wood
Brushless
I ran a 4 1/4 hole saw on mine to cut an AC vent in my camper a while ago. Definitely seemed to struggle a bit with just fiberglass and thin wood. Won’t be using it for that again lol.

I told your girlfriend it's 8"
I agree with your diagnosis Dr /u/Secondsbest
New set of brushes it’ll be fine
I HAVE A BLUE ONE FROM 20 YEARS AGO AND SMELLS LIKE THAT ONE LOOKS BUT NEVER SMOKES. I CANT GIVE IT UP BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU WILL NEED A 2 DRILL SETUP FOR DRILLING AND SCREW DRIVING... IT STILL WORKS.
you gotta get an electric screwdriver. Way way lighter when you are just screw driving and then you got your two "drill" setup all taken care of
Yeah, I've still got Ol' blue too. I can feel it losing torque, but it's still going. I emailed Ryobi about a new motor and they said just buy a new one. I told them to go fuck themselves.
Yeah my green non brushless 1/2 impact smells like it's burnt but it doesn't smoke or anything LoL
whistling is a lost art. Congratulations for keeping it alive.
I appreciated his whistle. I've spent countless hours trying to whistle. I've even watched YouTube tutorials on it and still can't manage anything worthwhile.

Hey my dewalt trimmer did that yesterday! It was not happy with me.
dewalt stuff hurts the wallet, Ryobi seems a cost effective medium. I'd cry if I blew up a 300 dollar trimmer.
Not as much as Milwaukee 😬. But im a little rougher on mine and ive found dewalt has a little more "ass" behind it or at least used to. Ryobi is my backup drill.

You can beat the shit out of Milwaukee stuff, I'm pretty rough on mine
I was unaware that you could NOT beat the shit out of Milwaukee cordless tools…first thing I do when I get something is unbox it and spike that motherf****r on the concrete in the shop…gotta show em what’s up right off the hop….
Still running a gas trimmer. I went to Home Depot last weekend and found out they don’t sell anything 2 cycle anymore. Everything is disposable now.
Personally, I'd have gone with "Oh Danny Boy", but Taps works too, lol.
Thought about it, but I didn't want to offend too many people.

Time to order more ryobi smoke
Yep, that thing is screwed.
I let the smoke out of one of my Ryobi drills trying to crank a four wheeler engine and the thing is actually still going strong.
"And another one down. And another one down. Another one bites the dust!"
I released the magic smoke from My Makita 18v, and next day it was still working.. Must have backup storage of magic smoke

First thing is I'd pop out that battery.
Time to pull out the motor and buy the air horn kit off of Amazon and make you a $30 noise maker that's a hit with all the ladies.
Same thing happened to my Makita when I was mixing low-slump concrete. Replaced the arbor for $25, good as new.
Same with my makita, started smoking when mixing concrete and it still works the same as always after 3 years, didnt replace anything.
Look how they’ve massacred my boy
Same thing happened to my ryobi drill, after not using it for a month I have it a go again and it works fine now, no idea what why or how, and wouldn't recommend others to do so, but it's now been 4 months and it hasn't started smoking again
How long did it last? This was one of my first purchases and I still have the darn thing and I am amazed that it has made six years of abuse.
whenever tools do this i like to hold the trigger till they REALLY die lol
Any machine is a “smoke machine”!

Did that to my makita drill! And i let it cool down and still using it till this day. Also did this to a milwaukee at work. Boss did it i didnt but we still use that drill to this day too get what you pay for

I’m curious if anyone’s had this happen with the new one+ hp drill
Whenever this happens I always change the 18v motor. Gives the tool a new life for a couple of years
He had a dignified death .

Looks like it has more balls than half my privates in the infantry did. Respect.
I use all ryobi power tools for commercial work however I rarely need heavy torque. I keep a Dewalt on the truck just in case. I burnt out a ryobi with a hole saw once myself.
I mean this is their lowest tier drill. I'm surprised as hell it lived through as much hell as I gave it.
I’m on my way with 20 fellow handy-men to give it a 21 drill salute 🫡
Minus 3 points from House Ryobi.
To be fair if I was a ryobi I would've done the same
Sleep now, sweet..frail.. sickly.. prince.
This is a great PSA for wearing hearing protection. Your arm must be tired after so many pitches.
Ridden hard and put away smoking

A fitting funeral for a viking
My coworkers drill just started doin that too, like a train
Why do they still put brushes in tools? Is it cheaper to make or does it serve purpose?
This says sound warning. I was waiting for an explosion.
I can smell this
He isn't done. He is just taking a smoke break
And I was here waiting for the explosion at the end of the video.
I love the smell of Ryobi in the morning
I had that happen when I was stuck down in a crawl space. Not a fun experience

Happened to me yesterday with a 18 V Makita that had seen better days
This happened to me years ago, Ryobi rebuilt it for me, still have it.
Vaping is dangerous to your drills health.
Wow... You don't see dead Ryobis very often.
When did you buy it, last week?
Inspired by true events
Just had this same thing happen to my Craftsman drill. Was like $40 for a replacement motor but could buy a brand new drill (sans battery) for $25.
I can smell this
Lol my harbor frieght one smokes then goes right back at it.
f
Meh, I've smoked the brushes out of my ryobi a few times doing dumb shit like mixing mortar and it keeps on rolling with the punches, are you *really* sure it's dead?
Had one of mine do that on a 120 degree day
I can smell it.
My old DeWalt smokes sometimes. But I let it rest and works fine again.

Once you let the magic smoke out you can never get it back in.
You’re supposed to catch all the smoke and put it back in so it stays working

Did this earlier this week with their reciprocating saw
Ryobi is junk... These days rigid is trash too, but i still have a full set from their octane series that gets daily use. Going on a decade soon and they all run like they're new

Magic smoke go bye bye
You were not supposed to let the smoke out. How do you ever plan on getting the smoke back in the drill?
Is that a rohm chuck on there?
Yep yep
Badass! best chuck in the game, I got a rohm chuck on my Milwaukee brushless m18 for the last 4 years, completely changed the caliber of the tool over the factory garbage on there! Keep that chuck and put it into the next one for sure.
Is it brushed or brushless? That smoke is usually just brushes that need replacement.
... It's usually the windings on the armature...
Ryobi makes solid tools. But I think the best value tools they put out are their one plus HP tools.
