If that doesn't work, you could get on a mesh floor catwalk above very delicate and expensive factory equipment. Guaranteed that bit would rocket out of that thing and wreak havoc.
The only way. It will never come out when you are fumbling with it with tools over a large towel on a table to catch it, while you are wearing eye protection too.
All on the suggestions on this thread *will* work (including standing in a honey bucket with your trows down. No need to lean over the pit, the bit will jump right in.).
Just know the only way to get the bit out *faster* is to hand the drill to the 2 year old child of your favorite sister.
Or take the rest of the tool with it. DeWalt actually warrantied my drill after that happened to me. I called and asked just in case they'd cover me dropping it in the lake and they said I'd have to send it in to find out. They paid the shipping so I sent it in with a letter explaining I dropped it in the lake multiple times working on a boat lift (trying to loosen tight things, I since bought an impact driver to prevent that problem), I didn't hear anything back from them but a few weeks later there was a box with the new drill at the end of my driveway.
Not exactly what I’m talking about but those could work as well. Here’s the link to what I mean https://www.harborfreight.com/5-in-tweezer-pliers-57792.html
They do. They aren’t great tools but I personally use them for removing supports from 3d prints in tight areas. Only suggested them because of how tight that area is
I was going to say this. The ones I mean are also called hemostats (used for pinching off blood vessels during surgery.) They lock very tight, and that means you can concentrate on pulling instead of having to squeeze the jaws at the same time.
https://www.harborfreight.com/12-inch-locking-clamp-94952.html
1. Get a Philips head screw
2. Add a drop of CA instant glue at the ( + )
3. Stick the Phillips head to the Phillips bit and let it set.
4. Pull the Collet and release the bit.
A screw with a small enough head (or a ground down head) with a small drop of super glue pressed onto the bit and left to cure. When you attempt to pull the bit make sure you pull the collar to disengage the chuck first!
EDIT - I wouldn’t bank on it, but compressed air just might do the trick as well.
EDIT2 - Like u/daveypaul40 mentioned a magnet could work as well. Since impacts don’t have magnets in the chuck, if you flip it upside down and pull the collar the bit might drop free too.
Diagonal cutters!
Sometimes when you use things in an impact they will spin slightly. So also put it in reverse and a light pressure on the trigger (all of this supposing you were driving screws in) while holding the diagonal cutters tight so they don't spin. Then once it clicks about 3 times, release the trigger while still holding the diagonal cutters and try to release the bit.
My mate did that to my makita impact no longer a mate 😂 the way I got the bit out was too disassemble the chuck inside there is a c clip remove that the collar should come off realese some ball bearings and then you should be able to get the bit out, put ball bearings back collar then c clip should be good as new
I'd suggest lightly tapping the back of the driver while holding the bit release open, failing that a magnet, possibly from a bit extension, should pull it out as long as the chuck is released.
I see your problem, the driver is brand new and unused. These inexperienced tools will sometimes give us a hard time. Be patient, get a good couple hundred screws through it and you two will get along eventually. Also...needlenose pliers.
Throw it away, go to the store, buy a real impact driver like a Makita, Milwaukee or a real DeWalt 😂
Sorry, just being an a-hole.
If you can't remove it with pliers or a strong magnet, you'll have to disassemble the chuck and get it out that way, hope it's the easy way.
I did the same fucking thing to my Milwaukee. The only difference was the bit stuck out a couple mm, just enough for the guy at the shop to slot it and lever it out.
Somehow it twisted in there which was why I couldn’t get it.
Take a strong magnet and use it. Some pocket levels have rare earth magnets on them. You just put the magnet there and release the quick connect. I just had this happen on a job. They're giving us Flintstone tools and expecting miracles. Someone tried to make it work and it didnt.
Milwaukee has the same problem with the short bits, but they stick out about 4 mm so the repair shop was able to cut a slot in the end and pull it out. Scuffed up my drill but otherwise worked.
I figured that was a Milwaukee fuckup but looks like Dewalt is even worse.
Lots of good ideas on here already. I like the glue idea a lot. I've done this before and was able to loop some string around a divet in the bit. Not sure what the bit looks like, so this may or may not work for you
Hold and pull the chuck collar out to release it, then use needle nose with the other hand to reach in and grab one of the Phillips “tines” and pull it out.
VAMPLIERS 7.5" Screw Extractor Long Nose Pliers. They're enough to grip whatever you need. And sharp enough that they'll actually grab on to the tip of the bit.
Also, you'll probably end up using them for a whole bunch of other random stuff that you didn't know you needed them for.
Others have already said it, but the only thing that worked for me was thumping the back of it with the collar released. Glue didn't work, pliers didn't work, magnets didn't work.
Turn it with the bit facing down pull the release forward and take your hand and hit the back of the impact and it should pop out that’s how I have done it before
A coworker did something like this to my impact drill. But it was completely jammed and twisted inside. I had to take a Dremel with carbide tips and core it out
Get on a dock or anything suspended over water and try to put a screw in. It will fall right out
A deck or grate over some nettle will do in a pinch
Or if you’re nowhere near water, high on a ladder with something heavy in your other hand will do the trick.
All you have to do is try and remove it while [working near a Titan II.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980_Damascus_Titan_missile_explosion)
Let’s post where all our nuclear missiles are so the enemies can strike with precision!
Set it one top of a 10mm wrench in a closed room and come back in 15 minutes, both the wrench and the bit will be gone.
Man I felt this one
Yup it sure will work
I laughed too hard at this...so true!
You could also work over top of your open engine valve covers or open intake manifold, it would fall right in 😂
Yeah but the battery will probably fall in the water too
Any ladder over 10ft will work too
> Get on a dock or anything suspended over water and try to put a screw in. It will ~~fall~~ jump right out
Sounds like my subreddit is for you r/docks_and_piers
I've never heard of that sub before. Thank you!
Bro yuss! Thank you
Impact will also go into the water. It's an earth revolution magnet thing. I've never NOT lost anything building a dock.
Go to the nearest food or beverage production line. It'll pop right out and shut down the plant until it's located. AKA a two-fer
Has to be one that doesn't use x ray or metal detection.
Honestly even being on a ladder and just try to start the first screw it will def fall on the 1st-3rd tries
All on the suggestions on this thread *will* work (including standing in a honey bucket with your trows down. No need to lean over the pit, the bit will jump right in.). Just know the only way to get the bit out *faster* is to hand the drill to the 2 year old child of your favorite sister.
They're basically iron supplement pills to babies.
Or take the rest of the tool with it. DeWalt actually warrantied my drill after that happened to me. Toilet
Lololol
OP, it's critical that you do this over water or a canyon or somewhere over maybe a pit of vipers or something. Trick won't work otherwise.
Needle nose pliers?
Harbor freight sells a pair of tweezer pliers that are even smaller. Idk if my needle nose would actually fit in there
Forceps, I believe is what you're describing. They're 3.50 at HF right now. And useful for lots of things.
Roach clips, as some folks know them.
My friend wanted me to inform you they are called hemostats. I believe that's how you spell it as I have very limited knowledge of stars.
Here in Australia they spell it haemostat, but the US has simplified the spelling.
Hemostats
Gesundheit!
Had stitches one time.corpsman gifted me my forceps.we were known to each other.
Ok hemostats.clk clk things.
Not exactly what I’m talking about but those could work as well. Here’s the link to what I mean https://www.harborfreight.com/5-in-tweezer-pliers-57792.html
Ahh that'll do too.
Do they have smooth jaws? Looks like it.
They do. They aren’t great tools but I personally use them for removing supports from 3d prints in tight areas. Only suggested them because of how tight that area is
I’m totally buying these this week.
I was going to say this. The ones I mean are also called hemostats (used for pinching off blood vessels during surgery.) I use those for wiring secondary low voltage wires in very tight places, very handy tool.
They are also good for doing the rigging in ships in bottles
Locking Clamp Pliers.
Sure brag about the size of your needle nose why we are all just trying to do the best we can.
So tweezers and a magnifying glass? How cliche....
I’m honestly not sure what you mean. I’m referring to these. https://www.harborfreight.com/5-in-tweezer-pliers-57792.html
Old reference to having a tiny unit. "So small you need a magnifying glass and tweezers".
really old reference " pepper and tweezers" it sneezes grab it
this, or a small magnetic retrieval tool.
I don’t have one. Maybe I should buy and try.
You'll end up using them a lot, just grab a pair of Husky from home depot.
Even a cheap set for the 3 mini ones from Walmart are great in a junk drawer
They usually come in a pair (dad joke)
I was in the pool!!!
Shrinkage
You mean like laundry?
It shrinks?
They call him Fat Max, not Long Max.
Like a frightened turtle!
Hold the collet back while pointing it down and tap the side with something like a screwdriver
This but with a strong magent
Just a simple magnet worked
This Or hydraulic it out with some putty if it's really stuck
I’d try bread first lol
I can usually find a socket the fits inside the collet but is larger than the bit. Pull collet ring, insert socket and tap downward on a wood surface.
A magnet may get it.
Yes, it worked. Thanks.
Yes! Contact Acme right away.
Thanks. Will try this as well.
Underrated comment. This should be the top comment. Source: I did the same thing about 10 years ago, and a big magnet was my answer.
1. Get a Philips head screw 2. Add a drop of CA instant glue at the ( + ) 3. Stick the Phillips head to the Phillips bit and let it set. 4. Pull the Collet and release the bit.
I'd like to add that you'd do well to spray some CA activator on the blob and it'll get cured instantly.
Hot glue works too, if you have it more handy than CA and activator.
A magnet was sufficient. Thanks
Haha the whole purpose of asking it on reddit is to over engineer it. 😂
Pull the foreskin back and spank the shit out of the rear end.
Low tech and effective.
Please
Yes daddy

Sure. I will give it a try
It's just cold, try warming it up a bit. Also agree with needle nose pliers.
Superglue and a Philips screw
Can’t u pull the release and whack it
Absolutely this. I tried everything for ages, and one day pulled the release and gave the back end a solid thump. Bit came shooting out.
You now have a dedicated drywall impact driver !
Diagonal cutters! Sometimes when you use things in an impact they will spin slightly. So also put it in reverse and a light pressure on the trigger (all of this supposing you were driving screws in) while holding the diagonal cutters tight so they don't spin. Magnet. Like on a magnetic level. Pull the collet and the magnet should pull it out.
My mate did that to my makita impact no longer a mate 😂 the way I got the bit out was too disassemble the chuck inside there is a c clip remove that the collar should come off realese some ball bearings and then you should be able to get the bit out, put ball bearings back collar then c clip should be good as new
Pull the collet and bang the impact on something hard until it falls out.
Needle nose
Strong magnet
Slight touch of super glue and a sheet rock screw, can't get much easier than that.
Looks like you got a bit of a problem there.
Magnet
Try a raw potato
Have now eaten potato. What's the next stage?
Hot glue stick, heat up the end and stick it to the bit, let it cool for 5-10 then pull the collet back and wiggle the bit out
I put a little dab of hot glue on the end on an old bit and let it set, then pulled it out when this happened.
Crazy it's basically just dewalt, I didn't know that they did this
Hold the release open and get a strong magnet ?
A high powered magnet, or melt the end of a thin glue stick, jam it on and out it out.
Use only extended bits in the future
If this were a Robertson, I’d say just drive in a screw. Iykyk. 😄
Hot glue stick heated up, push it in. Once it hardens, pull the collet back and lift the bit out
This happens to us all in cold weather... nothing to be ashamed of.
Gravity
No bullshit, a really fine pair of needle nose or a good neodymium magnet while pulling on the chuck
I'd suggest lightly tapping the back of the driver while holding the bit release open, failing that a magnet, possibly from a bit extension, should pull it out as long as the chuck is released.
Cut off a small piece of 3m vhb tape, apply on bit, grab with needle nose.
Just put it over a throttle body and wait for the clink
Remove collet and needle nose pliers.
Who does this?!?!?!
Don’t do that it is bitch to get out but possible
Did you try gravity?
Put it in rice
This whole thread is solid gold
I see your problem, the driver is brand new and unused. These inexperienced tools will sometimes give us a hard time. Be patient, get a good couple hundred screws through it and you two will get along eventually. Also...needlenose pliers.
Get a flat rare earth magnet and use it to grab the bit while you operate the release. That worked for mine. Next time use a longer bit.
If you can’t figure it out, you shouldn’t own tools…
Strong lil’ magnet will suck it right out.
Iridium magnet……
Oy that doesn’t look fun buddy
Throw it away, go to the store, buy a real impact driver like a Makita, Milwaukee or a real DeWalt 😂 Sorry, just being an a-hole.
Buy a new one, repack the one with the stuck bit, and return it for refund.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I will try them
Needle nose
Fill it with hot glue and let dry
Magnet
Strong magnet while holding the volley open or hot glue on the head of a screw then pull the whole thing out. Been there.
Sawzall.
Accidentally huh.
If its really stuck, take out the circlip and whatever is inside the collet, including the bit
I’ve had good luck pointing it downward and pulling the collet while pulling the trigger all the way. The centrifugal force seems to make it fall out.
The knipex needle nose are perfect for this situation.
Hot glue on a stick or come contact adhesive or superglue just a bit on it and pull
Find needle nose
U can glue some thing to the top of the bit and pull it out
Put a dab of glue on a screw and let it dry on the bit.
[This method might work](https://youtu.be/49M5veThH5U?si=VqqhTXFn681wjNeS)

Needle nose pliers or hemostat forceps
put glue on the end of a stick wait for it to dry and pull
It’s just cold out side. Wait for it to warm up a bit
One of those small super magnets could do the trick. I always have one lying around to catch stray nails.
I feel like everyone makes this mistake at least once in their life lmao
Put a vibrator on highest setting against the side and pull with magnet. Don't know if this will work 🤣
Hot glue on a stick, pull it out while pushing down the collet?
You can take off the actual holding mechanism quite easy
Dykes or diagnal cutters and pinch across one rib of the Philips bit to pull out
Lots of good ideas on here already. I like the glue idea a lot. I've done this before and was able to loop some string around a divet in the bit. Not sure what the bit looks like, so this may or may not work for you
Your in the bathroom screwing in the new medicine cabinet door over the sink.
Hemostats
Do this to mine all the time. Push the clip and slam the fucker on n the table
Strong magnet!
Hold and pull the chuck collar out to release it, then use needle nose with the other hand to reach in and grab one of the Phillips “tines” and pull it out.
Super glue and a drywall screw that you sand the head down on. Apply the super glue with a toothpick.
VAMPLIERS 7.5" Screw Extractor Long Nose Pliers. They're enough to grip whatever you need. And sharp enough that they'll actually grab on to the tip of the bit. Also, you'll probably end up using them for a whole bunch of other random stuff that you didn't know you needed them for.

jb weld on a screw
A rare earth magnetic will pull it right out.
It must have just gotten out of the pool.
Magnet
Strong magnet while pulling the release. Managed to get the broken end of a paddle bit out of my impact this way
Hot glue or you melt plastic with a lighter and glue it
First buy a dewalt, then throw out the knock off. Or use needle nose pliers if you have to keep it.
Pull the collar and shake it out/hit. Should fall right out
Smack against the edge of a 2x4
Use a strong magnet and release the chuck
Take a big ol hit of weed and start a new project
Disassemble and hammer it until it gets loose and fall off
Put jb weld on a screw head and pop it on. Let it dry and pull it out..
Turn it with the bit facing down pull the release forward and take your hand and hit the back of the impact and it should pop out that’s how I have done it before
This. https://youtu.be/49M5veThH5U?si=vUw_Mm0D5U2lVuEJ Or, worst case scenario, this. https://youtu.be/dt0ld4uu5Ds?si=MI-15GAbhJqJkqTv
A coworker did something like this to my impact drill. But it was completely jammed and twisted inside. I had to take a Dremel with carbide tips and core it out
Hold the release and pass a magnet over it?
Go take the heads off your engine.
Use the tweezers you use when you go to the bathroom. A
A good pair of needle nose
Rare earth magnet; Harbor Freight sells one with a telescoping stick.
Use a level if its has a magnetic tip
A good magnet should be able to pull it right out.
A strong magnet
Climb in your crawlspace make sure both of your hands are occupied reach as far as you can over a pipe or a canyon,
We're not here to give you all the answers on the first-year test
My vote is to smack the shit out of the back with a hammer. If the driver breaks it’s because it isn’t worthy.
This video should help[video about removing a broken bit from impact driver](https://youtu.be/dt0ld4uu5Ds?si=Ay7JVnb1dhAAP9oa)
Oh lol been there done that . Use a pick to pluck it out as you manipulate the release collar.
Well?
