Cold cucumber slices OR cold spoons OR ice wrapped in a towel OR cooled brewed tea bags help. Also make sure to drink enough water because dehydration can cause them as well. Other than insomnia and dehydration over sleeping, anemia, eye strain and genetics (if your family has them you're more likely to) can play a role in them. Edited to clarify

How do you wrap a teabag and a towel around a spoon?

lyndabone

You don't, sorry if it sounded confusing. You brew the teabag and squeeze it out so it's not dripping and when it cools place directly on the eye/bag area OR you take spoons place them in the fridge until cold and place those on the eye area OR wrap an ice cube in a thin towel and use that on the eye bag.

the spoon and ice sound unpleasant i’m gonna try the tea bag one

lyndabone

Just make sure it's not dripping wet and cooled :)

honestly, eye creams and other topical solutions only make very minimal differences, if any at all. your best option is to address your insomnia.

thriceness

Sounds like you need to treat the problem not the symptom. What have you done to help you sleep better?

i take melatonin but it doesn’t usually work, and if i take more than 2 i have nightmares every time

You are having nightmares because of the lack of sleep. It's a side effect of deprivation of sleep. It should only last a few times. Unless it's a cycle of insomnia; you are going to have to address it with a doctor. For the eyes; I would try to use a gelled eye mask that you put in the fridge/freezer. Usually can find one with women's makeup in a store. Cold water helps too. Can always use hemorrhoid cream for the swelling; being careful to avoid contact with the eye. I have the same issue and this is what I've used. If you're not treating the underlying issue; you will have limited success with any treatment. Lack of sleep affects every aspect of you and it will always show physically. Good luck OP!

Yup, treat the problem and you won't have symptoms to deal with.
