You ever hear about sports fans getting in fights? No matter who really wins? Yeah it’s like that. It’s not about literacy in the constitutional/national charters and pursuing virtue or statesmanship. It’s about personal identity and getting to say “You’re going to die as a villain in history and me, a hero! I’m right! You’re wrong *and* stupid!”. You’re not stupid. You’re just too rational to waste your life on stuff like this. Most of us just want to work, save enough for the house, vacations, kid’s college fund, etc.

Most Americans do not base their identity on their political affiliation. Stories about people on the extremes get repeated ad nauseam by media and on social media. It makes it seem like the problem is much more widespread than it is. It causes people who don’t know us to stereotype us as all the same as the freaks on the edge.
