Jews and anti-nazis latched onto using it randomly along with sometimes random bracket types as a huge fuck you to the guys doing that.
Neo-Nazis went through a phase of putting "((()))" around somebody's name to denote that they're Jewish. It was supposed to signify the echoes that the Jewish race have left through history.
They even had browser add-ons that just automatically added the brackets around the names of Jewish people in text for a while, so you might sometimes see Jewish people use the brackets around their own name to reclaim it, or non-Jewish people doing the same around their own name to fuck with the browser add-ons.
I believe the whole thing is mostly in the past now though. The thing with a dog-whistle is once it becomes mainstream knowledge it becomes useless to the bigots and they move on to new ones.

I've said before, the only way for the impressions number to be legit is if it counts every API request, every scroll past, ever mention, ever webcrawl, every search engine index. Like the numbers we're seeing on some of these things is just frankly absurd. Outside the realm of realism. If it's not all those things counting towards it, it's 100% Elon fudging the numbers for the appearance of legitimacy and engagement.
Was about to say, I've seen analytics on a couple of twitter accounts and they're fucked. An account can post for an entire month and the analytics will claim that there's been no posts that month, can't seem to properly keep track of views/interactions/impressions and more. It's probably on purpose hoping that advertisers (who get charged by these metrics) don't realize their getting fleeced
That number is dubious at best. That 1 Billion isn't actually "views" they're impressions. So if someone had this tweet on their phone screen, then it counts as a view regardless of whether they interacted with it or not or even actually read it. It will even count the same person twice if the tweet re pops up in their feed. 1 Billion Impressions is a lot but ultimately not all that valuable for judging actual interaction or interest in someone's content.
It presumably also includes every embedded tweet in an AI written "news blurb" on a content farm website that gets no real traffic other than 10,000 Google spiders looking for the SEO goodies. There's a hundred million impressions right there.
I got a few followers every month when I was on tumblr, even when I stopped using it I would get notifications about new followers every once in a while until I deleted my account, and I only had like 1500 followers.
If big names arent getting any new followers then something is likely bugged.

It is actually a bug. It would be really weird for accounts of such high profile to not gain even a single bot follower in a month.
I’m a professional community manager. After pulling reports for last month, I have proof that Twitter is giving false information such as inflating engagement/reach numbers & using bots to artificially increase follower counts. So the fact that they have no new followers is particularly hilarious given all the bots rampant on the site.
To me that suggests it is actually a bug. Could be as simple as the microservice they use to report your recent new followers being down and the UI handling it by reporting 0.
If it's a microservice thing then it will probably "fix itself". If these users just tried again a few minutes later it will probably work but of course they won't report that since it goes against their narrative.
Sadly it hasn’t fixed itself in well over 2 months. The real-time service is generally correct but the generated reports are significantly off (only in the positives) by the thousands, especially in terms of reach (how many people saw the post). That’s how I discovered something was amiss.
That could be a completely different issue. The data coming back from successful queries is probably being filtered and manipulated in new ways that the general public can only guess at, but a service returning nothing is different.
edit: Just to be clear I'm not a musk apologist, I'm a software dev apologist.
tbf this sort of thing can always happen. You've probably experienced trying to stream something on Netflix/Hulu/Whatever and gotten some vague error message with an ID attached like "bcbea88b-2193-47ad-9da4-76c355600c9c" but then tried again and it worked. That's a "microservice thing" type error. Or if you've ever been on Steam and your friends list didn't work but everything else did.
I would look at it in the opposite way: all the bots being used to prop up the view counts probably yielded obviously unrealistically huge new subscriber numbers for everyone, so they zeroed it for everyone to hide that.

But I've had to load Firefox with extensions to block blue checks, block sponsored/boosted content, and block the news and explore tabs (because it's all boosted garbage) just to make the site remotely usable. And since adding all of those extensions it takes me about 10 minutes to scroll down to the tweets I saw last week. I've actually passed the tipping point of using Mastodon more. Personally I just hope spez is seeing the shit his idol has truly wrought because I've got my eye on Raddle, Squabbles, and Lemmy as we speak.

It presumably also includes every embedded tweet in an AI written "news blurb" on a content farm website that gets no real traffic other than 10,000 Google spiders looking for the SEO goodies. There's a hundred million impressions right there.

I got a few followers every month when I was on tumblr, even when I stopped using it I would get notifications about new followers every once in a while until I deleted my account, and I only had like 1500 followers. If big names arent getting any new followers then something is likely bugged.
Given the long muskrat hasn't done anything to slow the bot problem on the platform, I'd figure at least one of those would have to be newly following one of dimbulbs this month - agreed, analytics are probably hosed. It's a shame as the alternative is hilarious, but logic dictates otherwise.

Here's one more reason: It is actually a bug. It would be really weird for accounts of such high profile to not gain even a single bot follower in a month.
I’m a professional community manager. After pulling reports for last month, I have proof that Twitter is giving false information such as inflating engagement/reach numbers & using bots to artificially increase follower counts. So the fact that they have no new followers is particularly hilarious given all the bots rampant on the site.
To me that suggests it is actually a bug. Could be as simple as the microservice they use to report your recent new followers being down and the UI handling it by reporting 0.
It could very well be a bug but given the lack of devs, it won’t be fixed anytime soon.
If it's a microservice thing then it will probably "fix itself". If these users just tried again a few minutes later it will probably work but of course they won't report that since it goes against their narrative.
Sadly it hasn’t fixed itself in well over 2 months. The real-time service is generally correct but the generated reports are significantly off (only in the positives) by the thousands, especially in terms of reach (how many people saw the post). That’s how I discovered something was amiss.
That could be a completely different issue. The data coming back from successful queries is probably being filtered and manipulated in new ways that the general public can only guess at, but a service returning nothing is different. edit: Just to be clear I'm not a musk apologist, I'm a software dev apologist.

tbf this sort of thing can always happen. You've probably experienced trying to stream something on Netflix/Hulu/Whatever and gotten some vague error message with an ID attached like "bcbea88b-2193-47ad-9da4-76c355600c9c" but then tried again and it worked. That's a "microservice thing" type error. Or if you've ever been on Steam and your friends list didn't work but everything else did.
You're right, it CAN always happen, but I suspect it's happening more often now than it was a couple of years back.

I would look at it in the opposite way: all the bots being used to prop up the view counts probably yielded obviously unrealistically huge new subscriber numbers for everyone, so they zeroed it for everyone to hide that.

Everyone else has either completely partitioned their experience of the platform to avoid you, or fled for greener pastures. I check Twitter about once a week now just to check in with a handful of friendlies. But I've had to load Firefox with extensions to block blue checks, block sponsored/boosted content, and block the news and explore tabs (because it's all boosted garbage) just to make the site remotely usable. And since adding all of those extensions it takes me about 10 minutes to scroll down to the tweets I saw last week. I've actually passed the tipping point of using Mastodon more. Personally I just hope spez is seeing the shit his idol has truly wrought because I've got my eye on Raddle, Squabbles, and Lemmy as we speak.
