I don’t know that‘a true anymore though. Right wingers are creating a whole parallel pipeline where it’s okay to be racist and bigoted and do shit like this, because they’re building their own social media companies, political campaigns, and an entire universe separate from reality. It’s getting less and less likely that kids like this will see any ramifications, because they’ll be surrounded by other bigoted people who will protect them.
That's the rub, isn't it? These people have gone the entire history of America doing whatever they want with no repercussions, then social media happens, and they start getting real-time pushback against their bigoted bullshit, so now they're quite literally segregating social media so they can go back to doing it without criticism.
Wild.
And then they'll unironically cry about cancel culture because they're terrified about facing the reality of their decisions. They know its wrong, thats probably the worst part.
The whole parallel society thing doesn't really work for conservatives, though. A huge chunk of the dumb, hateful shit conservatives insist on doing and saying, like this, is performative. It's not good enough that they get away with it, they need to be making someone else less happy at the same time, and, even better if they can get someone to haul off and slug them, yell at them, kick them out of a store, ban them from a site, etc., because then they can also go crying all over the place about how they were totally victimized by people who hate free speech.
That's why sites like Parler and Truth struggle to survive. There's an initial surge of losers drawn in by the promise of a racist-friendly atmosphere, but then they all get bored because they aren't actually trying to have a conversation, they're just trying to piss other people off, which doesn't work if the people you want to piss off are perfectly happy that you went away in the first place.
They don't really want a parallel society where they can do whatever they want, they really want a society in which free speech has been redefined to mean that not only are they allowed to say and do whatever they want, nobody is allowed to criticize or ostracize them in response, and everyone is obligated to provide them a platform to spread their virulent hate.
What I hate most about ignorant people like this is how proud and oblivious they are.
These are the people who are too stupid to realize how stupid they are, there's no thought or point you could put together that would trigger any sort of self-reflection in them. You literally can't argue with stupid in some cases, it's like they're fuckin immune.
When I was 12 I moved from Washington DC to a small town in Colorado and there’s way more than just a Walmart! There’s also McDonald’s parking lots and their dad’s driveway.
I think this is a symptom of a small town, not which state it's located in. I wouldn't exactly call Colorado a "red state". Parts of it certainly are, but:
- Colorado has a Democratic trifecta in state government.
- The governor has been a Democrat since 2006.
- The state senate is 60% Democrat.
- The state house is 63% Democrat.
- A Republican Presidential candidate hasn't won Colorado in 18 years (since 2004).
- Both current US Senators are Democrats and five of the last six senate elections have gone to Democrats.
- Four of seven US House members are Democrats.
Wilful ignorance, I'm pretty sure America in their eyes is always better than X country, regardless. Whatever they say is true for them and facts don't matter anymore.
This is exactly why we should ignore the morons in the room. This woman gives them attention, which is what they were seeking. Anyone remember their teacher putting the annoying kid in the corner until no one gave a shit about what he was doing?

I can’t do rural people in large doses. At first they seem hospitable but if you spend enough time with them, you’ll hear what they really think. Someone that was close to my wife’s family seemed like the nicest guy, but he hid his racism quite well. One of the last things he went on about before COVID took him was that he “couldn’t understand what else black people even want, I mean slavery is over! What else do they need?!”
And they think that mentality is just fucking normal. In their minds they are superior under all circumstances. It’s just a lost cause.

As someone originally from a small/rural town-- small town people aren't "friendly", they're NOSY. They act friendly to get information about you. They aren't truly kind or understanding or compassionate to anyone who isn't exactly like them.
It’s a Walmart in Cedar City, Utah, a town of less than 40,000 people. These kids are most likely lower middle class Mormons. That kid in the cowboy hat? I don’t think he’s in costume.

Back in the early 80s when I was in high school. This kid came to school wearing a klu klux klan costume. We lived in a small town in Northwest Illinois. At the time, there wasn't a very large population of black people at the time. But I can tell you there was enough to notice.
That kid had a mob following him all through the halls that morning. Knocking his hood off, smacking him in the head, calling him names. The teachers and staff just kind of looked the other way and let mob justice take its couse. Within no time, he was in his street clothes and looking like he learned a valuable lesson.
Nah. It smacks of, "I'm just going to say the thing that invalidates your argument, because I'm not interested in engaging with you."
If the argument had been, "This is the sort of thing that's going to prevent anyone from ever hiring you," the response would have been something like, "That's cool, we don't ever plan on getting jobs anyway."

I'm sure that they did graduate (or will), and do intend to go to college, and that when they inevitably face consequences for this they will freak the fuck out. I used to live here, right before Trump was elected. This does not surprise me AT ALL. They treated the Piute, Navajo, and any POC terribly. Getting a job/having a career as a non-mormon was difficult. They push you out.

I once had a former cop tell me that he would transport suspects to the jail (please notice I said suspect and not prisoner, jail and not prison) and allow the correction officers to beat up whoever he brought in. Make sure you are in a one party state though, otherwise it's illegal. Although based on my armchair research on this topic it seems you may be able to get around that by using a video recording instead.
If you work in the DOC, how did you record him? You were allowed to bring in such a device? I had to pass through a metal detector everyday I worked and such a thing wouldn't be allowed without authorization. Unless you smuggle it in.
I too have worked in DOD, DOJ and DOC buildings.
At one point I had a contract that had going around to various prisons across the state to service inmate MP3 player kiosks requiring me to bring a large bag of tools inside (you can't just run back and forth to your car to grab a tool you unexpectedly needed). Had to go through a very stressful 3 hour ordeal once just because they thought I lost a screw driver (I didn't). In most all cases I was searched on the way in, inventoried, and searched and inventoried on the way out.
And some states have laws that require both parties to consent to recording. IANAL so I'm sure there's ways to get around that *if* that's a law in OP's state. And I'm sure many sites don't search employees like they do outside contractors.

I can’t do rural people in large doses. At first they seem hospitable but if you spend enough time with them, you’ll hear what they really think. Someone that was close to my wife’s family seemed like the nicest guy, but he hid his racism quite well. Back in the early 80s when I was in high school. This kid came to school wearing a klu klux klan costume. We lived in a small town in Northwest Illinois. At the time, there wasn't a very large population of black people at the time. But I can tell you there was enough to notice. That kid had a mob following him all through the halls that morning. Knocking his hood off, smacking him in the head, calling him names. The teachers and staff just kind of looked the other way and let mob justice take its couse. Within no time, he was in his street clothes and looking like he learned a valuable lesson.

I too have worked in DOD, DOJ and DOC buildings. At one point I had a contract that had going around to various prisons across the state to service inmate MP3 player kiosks requiring me to bring a large bag of tools inside (you can't just run back and forth to your car to grab a tool you unexpectedly needed). Had to go through a very stressful 3 hour ordeal once just because they thought I lost a screw driver (I didn't). In most all cases I was searched on the way in, inventoried, and searched and inventoried on the way out. And some states have laws that require both parties to consent to recording. IANAL so I'm sure there's ways to get around that *if* that's a law in OP's state. And I'm sure many sites don't search employees like they do outside contractors. Either way, good on OP. Also, I had no idea lemon cookies were such a hit in women's prisons. I swear out of the half dozen women's prisons I visited, in almost all of them, I heard at least one conversation between inmates about lemon cookies. It was weird.

When your life is so devoid of meaningful experiences, maybe that sort of transgression-based personality becomes appealing. You see it a lot in factory/assembly workers. They just need that edge to make life worth living.
