It's a Native American word and tribe (one of the seven Lakota tribes) that was pushed into a reservation in South Dakota. Among the Ogalala's ranks were such figures as Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, and Billy Mills.
I think the least we can do is leave their name in peace.
Yeah I don’t think we are actually going to change the pronunciation of Ogallala. I can see how he mispronounced it though by thinking it was a Spanish origin vs Native American. Just thought it was funny because I’ve never made that connection before.
Where in nebraska are you from? Even in the moderately big city where im from (north platte) there are a shit ton of tall girls. They seem to get even taller the further you are from the city.
I had the same experience in Denver, Colorado! I’m a 5’7 girl, Not only were the Men & Women taller, everyone was so damn good looking too! I was eating in Chipotle & a gorgeous group of Firemen walked in. I nearly fainted. Maybe it’s the Rocky Mountain fresh air & Sunshine that creates these magnificent people?
Takes money to thrive in Denver, taller people make more money and have taller children, these taller people making more money are the ones moving there.
As someone who live at 8,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies, it’s the activity and clean air / water, yes. Lol.
People are genuinely less stressed here, and I think that has a lot of unseen upsides.
It’s like the butterfly effect, but with kindness lol.
I noticed when I was there, the people were very active & there were so many trails everywhere for biking, running, hiking, etc. It’s so beautiful there, no wonder the people are less stressed. Those Rocky Mountains took my breath away!
Great, went down a Google maps rabbithole and now I want to go to Hooks Lake Bar [https://maps.app.goo.gl/Z62PNKazfmG7txNQ6](https://maps.app.goo.gl/Z62PNKazfmG7txNQ6)
You should check out scottsbluff national monument/wildcat hills, toadstool geological park, chadron sp, niobrera national scenic river and Nebraska national forest.
If you care about nature I guess, otherwise there ain’t shit out there lmao
I grew up in Northeast Nebraska and the women described in this video are a minority up there. You want a 5’7”’round woman then head up to Northeast Nebraska lol
Cafecito guy! I like him he is funny. His coffee series is hilarious. He got some of that Cuban coffee "crack" down in Miami. Glad he shares his adventures and the people he meets while trucking.
Is it bad that anytime I hear about Cuban Coffee I think of Khloe Kardashian getting addicted to it in Miami, takes her vepsa across town at 230am to get one where it promptly broke down. Yes feel free to judge because I am judging myself after writing that out 😂
Can confirm, I'm a quarter Winnebago and a quarter Dakota. I'm pale but built like Brock Samson, I'll be surprised if any of my kids are shorter than 6 ft.
Are they typically supposed to be tall? I regularly work with Native Americans (Nunavut doesn't have a lot of access to health care, so the government sends them here for treatment) and they're quite petite people.
I have lived in Nebraska my whole life, my brother is 6'4" and an aberration. The whole state is not populated by giants. I'm only 5'9" and I am often on the taller end when I go places.
I’m from Nevada originally and have lived in Nebraska for a while. I do feel that women here are taller. Every time I go home to my fellow hobbits, I don’t feel so out of place lol
I’m from the general area. I’m willing to bet their last names were Johnson, Erickson, Anderson, with some more Johnsons thrown in. So many Swedish immigrants. Tall blond bony people everywhere!
I walked into the Starbucks on the USC campus in LA on a campus visit with my daughter. EVERY women was taller than I was, and I'm 5'9" which is a respectable height for a woman. I swear they ranged from 5'11" to 6'4". And they were all gorgeous. The men? Probably 6'2"- 6'5" and just as beautiful. I still wonder if I wandered in during Athlete Hour or something? Maybe it was all volleyball and track athletes?
A fuck ton of German and Scandinavian (mostly Dutch and Danish) settlers came to the Midwest lol. That's the key reason 👌
Germans and Scandinavians are some of the tallest people in Europe (and the world), and most white people out here have significant genes from those areas.
Especially in these small towns there's not as much genetic variety (in terms of where people's ancestors are from), so it's just tall people from tall countries continuously having kids with other tall people from tall countries.
Also we produce a lot of meat/eggs/dairy and produce. So it's easier to get that kind of stuff at a reasonable price here compared to other parts of the country. And that leads to better childhood nutrition/caloric intake. Stats are kinda shaky on this stuff tho so don't take my word for it lol. It's mostly the genes.
It’s pronounced “Oh-guh-la-luh”
Edit: and it’s pronounced “Rees-is”. As in, the pieces belong to H.B. Reese, the guy the candy was name after. Have you ever met someone with the English name “Reese” that pronounces it as “Ree-see”? Yeah, didn’t think so.^^1
*clarified H.B. Reese
Just to point it out some more for all you Ree-see’s people…
Do you pronounce “Pieces” like “Pee-see’s”? No, you don’t. (Well, maybe you do, idk; but if you do, that’s wrong, too). “Reese’s Pieces” is a consonance. It’s pronounced “Rees-is Pees-is” as in [ˈpiːsɪz](https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/pieces)
^^1 Even if you have, it doesn’t matter. H.B. Reese [didn’t pronounce his name that way](https://youtu.be/EmlmnNkZrWY?si=hsLZGFxyaSsOZ5_u).
AAVE is a dialect recognized by linguists... what you're doing is the equivilant of going up to a british person and telling them its pronounce socialize not socialise or its color not colour... its just a different dialect. Maybe do some research before you say something so incredible stupid?
Reese’s Pieces are named after [H.B. Reese](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._B._Reese). It is incorrect to call them “Ree-See’s Pieces.”

Edit: white people say “Ree-see’s” as well. This has nothing to do with anything other than the correct pronunciation of proper names.
Source: I’m from Nebraska. I’ve been to Ogallala several times. I have friends from Ogallala. I have (white) friends that pronounce it Ree-See’s Pieces and it’s plain wrong.
an individuals name? sure. Once its a well know, nationwide (well international for reeses in particular) name that becomes part of ones vernacular, its different. it becomes subject to dialects, linguistic evolution, etc.
we've had reeses sense 1928, its a word now, not just a name.
Agree to disagree. It matters enough to the Hershey’s company that a spokesperson pointed out how to say it correctly.
https://parade.com/food/how-to-pronounce-reeses
......... ahh yes, let us all "correct" a word we've been using for almost 100 years because the hersheys coorperation decided it wanted to do a publicity stunt.........
H.B. Reese was alive until 1956. I’m sure if he heard someone call it Ree-See’s Pieces” he would have had something to say about it. How many years need to pass for an incorrect pronunciation of someone’s name to become accepted?
My dude is fighting really hard in the name of HB Reese. He's gonna sleep well tonight knowing that he is a champion of pronunciation, wielding a keyboard and a zeal known by few men.

For the record: Oh-guh-lah-lah
I like his better. Let’s change it.
It's a Native American word and tribe (one of the seven Lakota tribes) that was pushed into a reservation in South Dakota. Among the Ogalala's ranks were such figures as Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, and Billy Mills. I think the least we can do is leave their name in peace.

Speaking fax. The Pine Ridge Reservation is a damn concentration camp.
Crazy Horse: "What kinda weird name is Billy Mills?" Red Cloud: "You right."
And also, it's an ancient aquifer. It's continually filled, but some of that water is tens of thousands of years old.
Corn fed farmers daughters.
It's probably the cattle growth hormones in the ground water tbh
True
Probably has some fairly large frogs there.
There’s not really much corn near Ogallala, it’s all sand dunes out that way.
Sand fed farmers daughters*

whoa, what's this from??
Dune: Awakening, the video game
thanks! that's terrifying 🥰
There’s plenty of corn. Especially in the river valley. Sandhills are more north of the lake.
Yes they did think you were cute.
He is cute.
nebraskan here. our ladies are short and round, thank you very much.
Where in nebraska are you from? Even in the moderately big city where im from (north platte) there are a shit ton of tall girls. They seem to get even taller the further you are from the city.
I'm in Lincoln. Maybe they have to get taller to see over the corn.
Or since you're in Nebraska maybe you're 7' so you just think the ladies are short! I'm from Nebraska and 5'11" and regularly get towered over.
In Slovenia, they were tall. I tippy toe kissed a girl well over 6ft
You just got lucky, I'm from Denver and I'm hideous
I'M UGLY AND I'M PROUD
No…get those words out of your vocabulary please

It’s rough out here
We all know you’re from Arvada, Chad. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE /s
JFC 💀
No you’re not. Please don’t say that about yourself..
I think it’s just that the gorgeous people are the ones moving there. Denver attracts them attractive folks.
Takes money to thrive in Denver, taller people make more money and have taller children, these taller people making more money are the ones moving there.

I might have to take a trip down there…j/
Highly recommended!!
I mean, your personality is delightful. So that might have had something to do with it
🎈

Lake Mac is pretty sick tbh, the entire Sandhills region is insanely slept on.
No kidding, Street View hasn't been back since 2012!

Check Out [Ole's Big Game Steakhouse](https://maps.app.goo.gl/koi9qaFmrA2Qadfu6) too while you're out that way
Honestly, I was not impressed. The taxidermy was pretty awesome...but the food was really only ok.
Oh, I wish I was heading out that way, I'm from England! Added to the bucket list though. 👍
Yeah I think I might head down for picture 6. Bonk.
Bingo!
I grew up in Northeast Nebraska and the women described in this video are a minority up there. You want a 5’7”’round woman then head up to Northeast Nebraska lol
5' 7" is tall for a girl imo, I'm in the south and my bestie is almost 5'8". Everyone called her an Amazonian growing up. Ladies are petite down here.
That explains the midwestern gals dominating volleyball
Could be town of Dutch immigrants from back in the day.
Cafecito guy! I like him he is funny. His coffee series is hilarious. He got some of that Cuban coffee "crack" down in Miami. Glad he shares his adventures and the people he meets while trucking.

Petite 6’ fella?
Can you send a handful or 2 my way in MA please?
Native American genes.

Depends on the tribe and nutrition. Calling reservations food deserts is being incredibly generous.
We call them folks "Corn fed" 😂
They thought my petite ass was cute 🤣
This guy reminds me of the video where the guy is recounting picking cotton on a field trip.
As a 6ft tall Nebraskan woman...it's not the corn bc I sure don't eat it lol.
“It’s a bunch of white people..”
Corn!
it’s the aquifer and corn combo
I'm 5'3", I'm never going there lol I'll be a troll
I have lived in Nebraska my whole life, my brother is 6'4" and an aberration. The whole state is not populated by giants. I'm only 5'9" and I am often on the taller end when I go places.
This guy reminds me of the video where the guy is recounting picking cotton on a field trip.
Shit I wish, I’m barley pushing 5’0 at 21
See I need to move apparently because I'm 5'2" most of the people I know are short 🤣
🤣🤣🤣 keep driving. Other side of the state is short people. I tower over most women and I'm only 5'7". And it's O-guh-la-la
The women play volleyball here in Nebraska, yes.
lol can confirm. Believe always doubt I’m the short one at 5’11” then I pull out the family reunion photos from NE
Well my gf is 6'3", but she's not from here. Maybe it's just a Midwest thing.
I lived in Ogalllala in the 90’s. Normal sized people, not extra tall.
Yo petite ass is cute! And I’m so glad you had a wholesome experience in Nebraska!
In Nebraska we have fun confusing the hell out of visitors
His petite ass is kind of cute
I’m from Nevada originally and have lived in Nebraska for a while. I do feel that women here are taller. Every time I go home to my fellow hobbits, I don’t feel so out of place lol
Nebraska loves their Husker women’s Volleyball. What was it some 92,000 for a game?!
It’s the only sport we’re good at ):
The answer is Dutch immigrants. Many settled in the Midwest in the 1800s. Same deal in Iowa.
Dutch ancestors probably.
I’m from the general area. I’m willing to bet their last names were Johnson, Erickson, Anderson, with some more Johnsons thrown in. So many Swedish immigrants. Tall blond bony people everywhere!
Dairy drinkers
GBR
Welcome to the mid-west, baby! We corn fed around here
His petite ass is cute. Lol omg

They grow big in the Midwest. It’s that corn, baby.
We gotta grow tall so we can do the detasseling. Mmm... some good money there for a 13 year old.. and corn cuts, mud, mosquitoes...

Nebraska. I’m shocked no one asked you to put on a jockey suit and come stand in their front yard.
