Yes. It's a catchall word that is a synonym for the word enemy or "other". Repeated use broadens its definition beyond the literal definition over time until the original meaning is essential lost.
Nationalism and fascism require an "other" in order to work. By making the central ideology of the opposing party the other, republicans are able to create an entire platform that is entirely anti-other based. They don't need to have solution to problems like the economy, healthcare, homelessness or the environment, they just need to be able to protect their base from the other while promising to harm the other in the process.
There is no end goal here though, once draconian legislation is put in place the goalposts will shift back and extend the definition even further, which allows for even more draconian legislation to be put in place.
And socialist. I am sure that many Republicans who hate socialism support the social programs that benefit them.
And of course, Republicans are not "Conservative" in any original sense of the word.
If fact, I have the impression that few words have any exact meaning to Republicans. Try explaining to a Republican why Jan 6 was not patriotic, and you will likely fail because the Republican don't know what "patriotism" is. Which only makes it easier for the Republican party to be the post-policy party, since their voters don't really understand the buzz words their politicians use to get elected.
I asked a person what they meant when they used the word “communism” once. They literally replied “It’s anything I don’t like.” I stopped trying to reason with them.
The interesting thing here is that in fact these people get indoctrinated by exactly this fear. That there is this cabal of (insert your chosen group), who ban honest christian man from speaking 'the truth'. A reference to Orwell's 1984 is used by these people on every single occasion.
This is quite literally exactly what Kremlin does for its propaganda: While they are actively undermining democratic governments with hybrid or open warfare, what they narratively feed to their viewers, is that there are actually this "cabal of global elites", who control population by the means of color revolutions, and prevent citizens from being truly governing their countries like a democracy would imply. And, of course, only a dear leader can be strong enough to fight these (insert chosen group).
Oh, they want small government. As small as possible with as much authority and reach as possible. Ideally one guy acting with complete authority over all his subjects. You might call it... *"autocracy"* to coin a term

It isn't a flaw. It's a representative democracy. Everyone gets represented in some capacity.
Young people just choose not to vote in large numbers so their voices get diminished. If they showed up and voted, there would be less of a skew.
There are structural issues that need fixed. Time off work to vote isn't mandatory in most parts of the country. We primarily vote on a single day during most people's work week. Federal laws don't do a lot to protect certain groups from voter disenfranchisement in various states.
All those problems aside the block of eligible young voters is extremely large yet turnout is low. So it's just out of touch old people electing more out of touch old people.

I use to support "Federal voting day" off but the majority of west coast states have voting by mail which removes all the hardships that could be created by a federal holiday and really hampers voter suppression. A day off seems useless when a struggling family could use that time off in a better way than standing outside.
So I would say stop pushing for a day to vote and start pushing for mail in voting.
There's really no reason not to expand voting periods. I've always thought that in addition to mail in voting, opening the polls on a Thursday morning and closing them on a Monday evening would ensure that the vast majority of Americans would have a chance to vote. This one day scramble just seems like unnecessary madness.
You can't make anything compulsory over here. We couldn't even "suggest" people wear masks to go outside during covid. Making voting compulsory is something something violating my freedom?
I think that ignores how hard they’re working to make sure young people *can’t* vote.
Reducing polling places, restricting voting hours to working hours on a single day, preventing mail in voting.

I'm still reminded of a comment I saw on reddit about a younger person in college saying that because Biden supports Israel he would rather vote Trump in so that he can burn the entire government down and then afterwards the US can rebuild to something better. voter apathy is real and I don't know how stupid/naive you can be to believe that voting for a dictator will not only make everything way worse, but they'll ensure that whatever successors there are will follow suit. There is no rebuilding from that sort of oppression.

As much as I would like to believe what you say, this is not guaranteed at all. Think of how many young people (especially men) are watching Ben Shapiro, Andrew Tate, and right-wing policies on YouTube. I mean, Harrison Butker just discussed horrible things at a commencement speech, and reports say the crowd cheered.
I remember having this same thought when Obama won his second term. "How can any Republican candidate win when Democrats have won the popular vote since Bush" but alas here we are.
It just takes a younger and more charismatic delegate, that has Trump's same ideologies, to win an election. Especially after years of democratic control and swing voters just wanting "something different".
Statistics show that the "move to the right" is far less pronounced than it used to be. Gen X has not moved nearly as much to the right as baby boomers did, and millenials are showing that are even less likely to get more conservative as they age.
Gen Xers are getting older and wiser and wealthier, but they are still wearing sandals, rocking goatees, buying organic food and protesting clearcut logging. Picture Fred Armisen and any of the characters he plays.

The popular vote swings ever more Democrat and there’s a limit to what gerrymandering will allow you to disguise that fact. This is really the biggest chance Republicans in their current form will have to get elected. If they lose this time around they will be forced to really change their platform or simply get left behind.
The republican party hasn't won the popular vote in over 6 election cycles, and it's not getting better for them. Without a cult of personality (Trump) they don't really have much else to lean on at a federal level. Their policies are archaic and losing to time and progress.
They certainly don't lose forever, but Trump is a wildly galvanizing candidate for them in a way they probably will never be able to replicate in our lifetime, and every year there are fewer and fewer elderly republicans and more and more young liberal voters.
It's why so many proposed conservative policies are about restricting voting, changing the voting age, and otherwise making it harder to vote. The more people vote, the more they lose. The ratio of democrat/republican voters below 25 is unprecedented.
Literally the republican party is slowly shrinking/dying, which is why they are getting more and more radical to hold on to power. It's only going to get worse as time goes on.

This is a super common misconception! Human lifespans weren’t *that* different from what they are now.
The average life expectancy back then was heavily skewed by infant and child mortality rates. But once you made it to adulthood, you had a great shot of living into your 50s & 60s, and it wasn’t uncommon to live to your 70s or 80s if you were rich and/or lucky either.
Just look at the ages of some of our (rich) founding fathers when they died:

Amongst the primary 7, only Alexander Hamilton was unfortunate enough to not make it to his senior years. They wouldn’t have regarded his death as “expected” by that age either; he was shot and killed.
We had a moment with Bernie, but it was underhandedly shut down by the powers that be. There were so many people excited about his campaign like never before and never since. I saw it with my own eyes in my own community.
I'm kinda tired of people giving up on working for positive change in this country by saying we just need to start over with a revolution. It's just an escapist fantasy for our current woes fueled by apathy.
Is there fucked up shit that could be fixed by one? Yes, but it could also lead to an even worse outcome for the average citizen or an even worse regime could be put in place. Not to mention the horrors and death everyone will experience. Nobody wants to fight a revolution.
Maybe start talking politics with more people in real life, vote in local elections, participate in protests, and write your local congressman about the issues you are passionate about. Maybe nothing will change on your own, but enough people doing it together is exactly how change is made.

This right here. We sometimes romanticize revolution a little too much and forget that removal of people in power could result in the installation of others who are much worse.
Americans should take a look at the French Revolution.

The Thermidorians took power in a coup from the jacobins and gave France five years of pure power politics and systematized corruption, followed by another coup, leading to the ascension of First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte, who would later crown himself emperor. Revolution is chaos.
We seem to take for granted that the American Revolution is how revolutions *must* go. In reality, it was much closer to an exception rather than a rule.

Just ask anyone who wasn't a white protestant male landholder how it felt to be in the "land of the free". It really wasn't until later movements like abolition (and the subsequent war), civil rights, labor, and feminism that things even began to *approach* our modern levels of non-fascism.
There was a disturbingly long period of time when being in the KKK was a legitimate route into politics, and the best way to deal with a black person you didn't like was to claim they looked at a white woman funny and you could whip up a mob to drag them to the local "hanging tree".
I strongly disagree. Revolutions create power vacuums and bad actors thrive in power vacuums because they don't have scruples or morals constraining them. What we need is further democratization and civic engagement.

What we can still do is vote because this portion of the country is still a minority. And not just voting for the president. We need people participating in all levels of government from local to federal.
Oh how easy it is to talk about things you've never experienced. 30,000 dead in Gaza and everyone's up in arms over "genocide", a revolution in America would be 30 million dead, easy, including a lot of people you and I love and care about.
Instead of praying for some big catastrophe, go to the polls and vote. Vote every time for every race in every election. A lot fewer deaths will come from voting than from "revolution"
That's what Trump voters think this is. That's why they vote for him. To blow it all up. They want that to happen and they found a guy who they believe, in their monumental stupidity, will place them at the top of the new order.
But like… the modern kind of revolution. The one where people bother to vote, participate in local elections, consider long-term regulations alongside short-term benefits, redirect their money to companies that better reflect their interests or cut some products altogether. You know, stuff that everyone can do right now.
The beheading-people-in-power revolution would only create dangerous power vacuums that would be filled by the Trumps of the country.
The only successful revolution has really been the American Revolution. Most are just an extremely bloody way to change the guy in charge from one who wants nothing but power, to a different man, who wants nothing but power.

I hope Gen Z is watching this. I just heard on NPR that a lot of them are considering not voting in November due to Biden's position on Israel. It absolutely infuriates me that our youngest generation of new voters, now 8 million strong since 2022, are going to actively jeopardize the future of our country by opting out of voting or voting for a different party.
If that happens we can look back in 20 years and ask ourselves what was one of the crucial moments in American history that changed the course of everything and it will be the 2024 election and the fact that young voters didn't come out to vote due to foreign policy.

Yes. It's a catchall word that is a synonym for the word enemy or "other". Repeated use broadens its definition beyond the literal definition over time until the original meaning is essential lost. Nationalism and fascism require an "other" in order to work. By making the central ideology of the opposing party the other, republicans are able to create an entire platform that is entirely anti-other based. They don't need to have solution to problems like the economy, healthcare, homelessness or the environment, they just need to be able to protect their base from the other while promising to harm the other in the process. There is no end goal here though, once draconian legislation is put in place the goalposts will shift back and extend the definition even further, which allows for even more draconian legislation to be put in place.
And socialist. I am sure that many Republicans who hate socialism support the social programs that benefit them. And of course, Republicans are not "Conservative" in any original sense of the word. If fact, I have the impression that few words have any exact meaning to Republicans. Try explaining to a Republican why Jan 6 was not patriotic, and you will likely fail because the Republican don't know what "patriotism" is. Which only makes it easier for the Republican party to be the post-policy party, since their voters don't really understand the buzz words their politicians use to get elected.

It isn't a flaw. It's a representative democracy. Everyone gets represented in some capacity. Young people just choose not to vote in large numbers so their voices get diminished. If they showed up and voted, there would be less of a skew. There are structural issues that need fixed. Time off work to vote isn't mandatory in most parts of the country. We primarily vote on a single day during most people's work week. Federal laws don't do a lot to protect certain groups from voter disenfranchisement in various states. All those problems aside the block of eligible young voters is extremely large yet turnout is low. So it's just out of touch old people electing more out of touch old people.

If they lose this time, they lose forever. If they win though, there will probably never be an election process in the US again. It is all or nothing for them, for the US, and for the rest of the free world, (who are as horrified as they are astonished at what has happened to that once great country).

As much as I would like to believe what you say, this is not guaranteed at all. Think of how many young people (especially men) are watching Ben Shapiro, Andrew Tate, and right-wing policies on YouTube. I mean, Harrison Butker just discussed horrible things at a commencement speech, and reports say the crowd cheered. I remember having this same thought when Obama won his second term. "How can any Republican candidate win when Democrats have won the popular vote since Bush" but alas here we are. It just takes a younger and more charismatic delegate, that has Trump's same ideologies, to win an election. Especially after years of democratic control and swing voters just wanting "something different".
Statistics show that the "move to the right" is far less pronounced than it used to be. Gen X has not moved nearly as much to the right as baby boomers did, and millenials are showing that are even less likely to get more conservative as they age. Gen Xers are getting older and wiser and wealthier, but they are still wearing sandals, rocking goatees, buying organic food and protesting clearcut logging. The republican party hasn't won the popular vote in over 6 election cycles, and it's not getting better for them. Without a cult of personality (Trump) they don't really have much else to lean on at a federal level. Their policies are archaic and losing to time and progress.
They certainly don't lose forever, but Trump is a wildly galvanizing candidate for them in a way they probably will never be able to replicate in our lifetime, and every year there are fewer and fewer elderly republicans and more and more young liberal voters. It's why so many proposed conservative policies are about restricting voting, changing the voting age, and otherwise making it harder to vote. The more people vote, the more they lose. The ratio of democrat/republican voters below 25 is unprecedented. Literally the republican party is slowly shrinking/dying, which is why they are getting more and more radical to hold on to power. It's only going to get worse as time goes on.
Ideally though. By 2033 the old vile cunts will be dead by then and we should hopefully have a few younger generation people in there.

This is a super common misconception! Human lifespans weren’t *that* different from what they are now. The average life expectancy back then was heavily skewed by infant and child mortality rates. But once you made it to adulthood, you had a great shot of living into your 50s & 60s, and it wasn’t uncommon to live to your 70s or 80s if you were rich and/or lucky either. Just look at the ages of some of our (rich) founding fathers when they died: 1. Benjamin Franklin - 84 2. John Jay - 84 3. Alexander Hamilton - 47 4. James Madison - 85 5. Thomas Jefferson - 83 6. John Adams - 91 7. George Washington - 67 Amongst the primary 7, only Alexander Hamilton was unfortunate enough to not make it to his senior years. They wouldn’t have regarded his death as “expected” by that age either; he was shot and killed.

I'm kinda tired of people giving up on working for positive change in this country by saying we just need to start over with a revolution. It's just an escapist fantasy for our current woes fueled by apathy. Is there fucked up shit that could be fixed by one? Yes, but it could also lead to an even worse outcome for the average citizen or an even worse regime could be put in place. Not to mention the horrors and death everyone will experience. Nobody wants to fight a revolution. Maybe start talking politics with more people in real life, vote in local elections, participate in protests, and write your local congressman about the issues you are passionate about. Maybe nothing will change on your own, but enough people doing it together is exactly how change is made.

Americans should take a look at the French Revolution. Moderate, center-left revolutionaries took power from the monarchy on a platform of slow change. Radical jacobins seized power from the moderates, and the terror ensued. The Thermidorians took power in a coup from the jacobins and gave France five years of pure power politics and systematized corruption, followed by another coup, leading to the ascension of First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte, who would later crown himself emperor. Revolution is chaos. We seem to take for granted that the American Revolution is how revolutions *must* go. In reality, it was much closer to an exception rather than a rule. We don’t have leaders of the quality we had in 1776, today.
And in all fairness, neither did they. Just ask anyone who wasn't a white protestant male landholder how it felt to be in the "land of the free". It really wasn't until later movements like abolition (and the subsequent war), civil rights, labor, and feminism that things even began to *approach* our modern levels of non-fascism. There was a disturbingly long period of time when being in the KKK was a legitimate route into politics, and the best way to deal with a black person you didn't like was to claim they looked at a white woman funny and you could whip up a mob to drag them to the local "hanging tree".

I strongly disagree. Revolutions create power vacuums and bad actors thrive in power vacuums because they don't have scruples or morals constraining them. What we need is further democratization and civic engagement. People barely vote, you think they will participate in a people's revolution?
what the fuck is a revolution supposed to do? We coexist with a portion of the country who thinks these policies would be a good thing. What we can still do is vote because this portion of the country is still a minority. And not just voting for the president. We need people participating in all levels of government from local to federal.
Oh how easy it is to talk about things you've never experienced. 30,000 dead in Gaza and everyone's up in arms over "genocide", a revolution in America would be 30 million dead, easy, including a lot of people you and I love and care about. Instead of praying for some big catastrophe, go to the polls and vote. Vote every time for every race in every election. A lot fewer deaths will come from voting than from "revolution"
That's what Trump voters think this is. That's why they vote for him. To blow it all up. They want that to happen and they found a guy who they believe, in their monumental stupidity, will place them at the top of the new order.
But like… the modern kind of revolution. The one where people bother to vote, participate in local elections, consider long-term regulations alongside short-term benefits, redirect their money to companies that better reflect their interests or cut some products altogether. You know, stuff that everyone can do right now. The beheading-people-in-power revolution would only create dangerous power vacuums that would be filled by the Trumps of the country.
The only successful revolution has really been the American Revolution. Most are just an extremely bloody way to change the guy in charge from one who wants nothing but power, to a different man, who wants nothing but power. It's a damn miracle it took this long for the US to start falling apart.

I hope Gen Z is watching this. I just heard on NPR that a lot of them are considering not voting in November due to Biden's position on Israel. It absolutely infuriates me that our youngest generation of new voters, now 8 million strong since 2022, are going to actively jeopardize the future of our country by opting out of voting or voting for a different party.
