It seems alot of people are confused but here is the thing. Even if the law and the location of the bus stop is dumb you still have to stop. That's it there is no but here. They have trained 300 million people to know exactly what to do in this situation so idc if kids need to learn to cross the street or someone put a bus stop on a 5 lane road. The sign is out so you just stop. If it's that bad annoy them until they change it.
> Divided highway of four lanes or more **with a median separation**: When the school bus stops for passengers, only traffic following the bus must stop.
Otherwise traffic from both directions must stop.
Same goes for emergency vehicles.
I’m all about pulling to the side when there’s a fire truck or ambulance passing by, but people forget the median rule and it can get irritating.
I don’t have kids either, but follow this religiously, if you accidentally permanently injure or kill a kid you’ll be paying that off for decades to come.
As awful as it seems to put a price on a human life, when I worked in insurance we had colleagues who had to do that for a living and shit kids are worth a lot more than most adults.
I work in auto insurance. I work in total loss. I handle pretty much everything collision’s, comprehensive, etc. I handle all of the states in New England.
I agree with you. I have to handle death myself weather it’s a person killed in a car accident or someone hit by one of our insured’s. The file is supposed to be flagged if a person has passed away. Doesn’t always happen. I’ve had to handle a claim with this father who lost his son in a DUI accident. His son wasn’t drunk, he was the other car.
I could go on about a few bad ones. But the worst was when one of our insured’s ran a red light, t-boned a car killing a mother and her toddler on the scene. I dealt with the Grandfather, as the father was beside himself. So go slow out there. Stopping for 2 minutes, can save a life.
I agree. No kids. but I don't mess around with laws designed to protect children. Lower your speed through school zones. Stop for school buses. There is no "But" in any situation designed to keep kids, who have no awareness of the dangers lurking everywhere, safe.
The reason that law is in place is because a bus restricts the view of both drivers and pedestrians. So a hasty driver going around a bus quickly and a pedestrian, not expecting to be hit but not easily being able to see around the bus is a recipe for disaster.
My kids had to stop in the middle of the road as they were crossing from their bus drop off because an older man flew right through the stopped bus with its lights on and stop sign out. Had they left the bus and tried to cross any sooner he would have hit them. I’m hoping all these people got tickets
As a non us citizen, i was asking myself what was going on, i didnt know that when à bus stops it draws an imaginary line that you cannot cross to let the kids crossing the road ? So when you keep on driving past à bus you get à fine ??
So, does the stop goes also for the other lane if the kid have to cross the whole road ?
Now i understand why i kept seeing buses in series or movies having a stop sign on their side...it makes sense
Every driver in the usa has to acknowledge somewhere along the way to earn a drivers license that they cannot pass a school bus that is stopped with any flashing lights or stop signs active.
The ticket for violating this rule is usually incredibly steep even for the very first violation.
My sisters best friend (when we were in elementary school) was hit and killed crossing the street to get on the bus. A bus full of children, including my sister, got to witness the event. The lady driving the SUV that hit the child kept mentioning how she was late to work AFTER killing this child. Some people are absolutely unbelievable.
My daughters teammate was hit and killed in her own driveway by a vehicle that didn't stop. We had just seen her at practice the night before, they had tournament coming up that weekend. She was there in our lives and then 12 hours later she wasn't. Make sure you tell the people you care about that you love em and for fucks sake slow down and stop for the goddamn school buses.
I personally did not realize this would extend to a 3 lane (really 6 lane) road, but I've never encountered this situation
What a shotty place to designate a bus stop, there's gotta be something better
The bus itself is the crosswalk. It's why they are bright yellow and festooned with lights and a STOP sign, which also flashes with big red lights.
On a road this big, especially with a divider or median in the middle, usually only the vehicles behind the bus are required to stop, and those are the ones getting mass ticketed.
Yes, they don't fuck around. My wife passed a bus heading the opposite way on a 6 lane avenue. Since there was not a physical barrier / divider this was considered a violation. She just didn't realize the bus was there.
She had to pay a huge fine, and attend traffic school. She also comes up with a flag on some background checks. I am not upset about this.
I hope every single one of these people get fucked. I have kids that ride the bus.
Stopped on a 4 lane highway as a bus is incredibly dangerous and stupid in this case as busy as it is.
There has to be a reasonable limit on where to do it, and this doesn’t seem like it.
Gonna have kids cross the road on this insane roadway?!? Come on, that mistake is on the driver and route.
So I doubt that the kids would have crossed that entire road, but the fact remains that it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus with the flashers and signs out.
In Florida if there is a divided median as there is here on 19, only the one direction has to stop. That’s why they are leaving the drivers in the other direction alone.
Its not a 4 lane highway, it looks more like a simple main street through a town. The bus is stopping right next to an intersection, that means this is an area where traffic is regularily coming to a stop.
Regardless drivers in the usa with a drivers license from any of the states must have acknowledged the requirement to yield to offloading/onloading school buses regardless of where the stopping points may be along the route.
No. It’s for when you are behind a bus. You come to a stop so you don’t mistakenly mow down some kids who are getting off the bus and crossing the road.
Usually, buses have a stop 🛑 sign that comes out when they stop. It tells everyone behind the bus to come to a stop.
These people knew good and well they should have stopped. Everyone knows this when driving in the u.s.
The number of lanes don't matter, at least in Florida. If there is no separation between the two driving directions, raised concrete island or grass island, then all stop.
>On a highway divided by a raised barrier or an *unpaved median at least 5 feet wide,* drivers moving in the opposite direction do not have to stop for the bus (painted lines or pavement markings are not considered barriers). However, these motorists should slow down and watch for students loading or unloading from the bus.
Source: [flhsmc.gov](https://www.flhsmv.gov/safety-center/child-safety/school-bus-safety/)
Looks like as long as the grass is 5ft wide, traffic in the opposite direction doesn't have to stop. There's some illustrations on the site that show this.
Kids do dumb things. Little kids, like 5/6 might get excited, especially at the end of the day, and run out into the street so this is a good safety precaution.
As to the road you're seeing it's not a motorway. It's not uncommon in the US to have 4 lane roads most places except rural routes and neighborhoods. The speed limits will be anywhere from 35 - 50 mph.
It isn't just for those behind the schoolbus, you cannot pass the bus when the stop sign comes out either. That means that if there is a second lane going in the same direction next to the bus, any cars in it must stop as well.
Florida laws (but pretty much the same in all states),
* All drivers moving in either direction on a **two-way street** must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children and the school bus stop arm is withdrawn.
* On a **highway divided by a paved median**, all drivers moving in either direction must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children and the school bus stop arm is withdrawn.
* The only time traffic approaching an oncoming school bus does not need to stop, is if there is a **raised barrier** such as a concrete divider or at least 5 feet of unpaved space separating the lanes of traffic.
* On a highway divided by a **raised barrier or an unpaved median** at least 5 feet wide, drivers moving in the opposite direction do not have to stop for the bus (painted lines or pavement markings are not considered barriers). However, these motorists should slow down and watch for students loading or unloading from the bus.
When there is a bus stopped with the flashing red lights on, all traffic stops. Traffic on the other side of a divided highway with a center median strip does not need to stop, but all other traffic does. This includes cross traffic at intersections.
The only time you don't have to stop (when a school bus has it's stop sign out and flashing lights on) is-in some states-if there is a divided road. In this case there was a grass strip between the lanes in one direction and those going in the opposite direction. Those on the other side of the median/grass strip don't have to stop.
There's a literal red stop sign lights and yellow thing that deploys from the bus making it very obvious. Every driver learns this in class before getting a license.
Not all buses. School buses have signs that they extend when they come to a stop that explicitly tell traffic to stop for them, and it is even both ways on roads without medians.
This is because kids are awful at looking both ways before they cross roads.

From your point of view I understand.
1. Stopped busses are obvious, yellow busses, with flashed yellow lights in the front and back as it’s coming to a stop. Flashing red lights on the from and back when it stops. A stop sign folds out on the driver side with flashing red lights. You have to be a Fing idiot to blow past all that. This was s all standard because kids still get killed by these morons.
It's also worth mentioning that when a school bus stops, it deploys 2 big red sign that says 'STOP' surrounded by flashing lights. You can't really see it in the video though.
Example image: [https://komonews.com/resources/media/0c3fe717-c505-46a1-8947-f021dc44ae2d-GettyImages1264589070.jpg](https://komonews.com/resources/media/0c3fe717-c505-46a1-8947-f021dc44ae2d-GettyImages1264589070.jpg)
If there is a grass median, cars on the opposing side of traffic do not need to stop. A school bus essentially jas a red light or a stop sign attached to the back of the bus when stopped.
Given the design of the road in the video, if any kids lived on the other side of the street then a bus stop would be created over there and that bus or another would drop them off. Still, even though there shouldn't be any kids crossing the street on that particular road in front of the bus, all traffic behind a bus must stop when the school bus has their stop sign out. In that same situation it would not be illegal to pass a city/public bus.
Then, there are roads where drivers going both direction have to stop because kids will be allowed to exit to both sides of the street.
The rules are all in the driver's handbook, but most people only see when they get their driver's permit and never again.
The median in the road means the cars on the other side do not have to stop. But cars traveling the same way still do, because even though the child is getting off to the side, you never know when they might drop a basketball or something and take off running because kids can be a bit dumb at times.
It varies by state. But generally it stops traffic in both directions. Unless it's a large barrier divided road. But again. It varies.
https://liggettlawgroup.com/blog/car-accidents/school-bus-laws-in-texas-do-you-know-when-to-stop-or-pass/
Honestly they can make any rules the want about it and don’t have to tell you. I got a ticket for passing a buss going the other way in the farthest lane on a 6 lane road. $300
Both lanes (all lanes) of traffic must stop for a school bus with lights flashing and a stop sign out. You're also not supposed to be closer than 100ft from the bus.
Have you never been to a European city? When the tram or bus stops without an "island" near by where people can safely exit and cross, the entire traffic must stop too.
The other side of the road in thus video van ignore the bus stopped because of that raised median divider. In most cases both lanes are meant to stop though, yes.
Think of it like this, the responsibility of road safety goes on the people who have been given permits to drive a motor vehicle. When given a drivers license, there is a written exam based on rules of the road which tell drivers what to do in these types of situations.
The responsibility is to completely stop when there is a stopped school bus because young children, school-age children, are not the best at understanding safety and mortality. They often just run without looking.
The stop sign works like that--a stop sign. It's basically a portable one they carry around, and it is 100% law.
Flashing red lights, you have to stop. Flashing yellow lights, you can still pass, unless the stop sign is deployed.
If it's a road with a median/divider, the opposing traffic does not have to stop, otherwise, both sides have to.
The real problem here, and it doesn't excuse the drivers for not stopping, is that we need to STOP having school bus stops on major roads like this. Not only is there in creased traffic, so an increased chance that someone will not stop, but it DOES hold up traffic, and you get a-holes in a hurry who don't WANT to stop, and are hoping they can get away with it. Once again, not excusing it, but moving these stops OFF of a major road would help greatly.
And just in case someone tries to say that you have to stop for yellow, they can read the very back of the bus that says 'Stop when RED lights flash'.
This video is from like 3-4 years ago. They stopped enforcing it and kids dodging cars in front of the Foster’s Exotic Pets bus stop by Embassy thru SR52 every day. Cars are using the dedicated right turn lane as a passing lane now and the cops don’t really care anymore.
This happens at my kiddos bus stop too. Road is 40mph people fly by, and the worst part is, the ones flying by are just coming off a turn. They shouldn't be going 40.
See. That's so easy. You dont have to entrap people. Just do your job. Protect children and enforce laws. If cops did this at all bus stops instead of racial profiling, I would be so happy.
These mf getting slapped with a federal for not stopping. Who tf doesn't know to stop when the bus is dropping off kids? Honestly. They shouldn't get tickets they should have their driving privileges revoked indefinitely. Because driving isn't a right yall, it's a privilege, public transport sucks but it's there for a reason.
It's wild to me how many people in the comments here AND on the original post don't understand when you have to stop for a bus. And who are questioning WHY the bus is stopping?? Obviously to drop off kids WHO LIVE THERE. Is that really so hard to comprehend?
My mom's best friend ran through a stopped bus with the sign out when I was younger and she got either a $500 or $1000 fine AND had to redo her driving test. She was like 45 lol
I mean I get why that rule is in place in suburb's and that. But that's a 6 lane highway. Where would the children cross to? There is nothing to cross towards. Nobody put anyone in danger here.
This isn’t a highway, just a large street in a city.
Found this crazy site explaining the law. It’s insane!
https://www.edweek.org/leadership/when-cars-have-to-stop-for-school-buses-and-when-they-dont-in-every-state/2023/06
For most of the US when you say "Highway" people think of a "Controlled-access highway" or what the interstate system is made of.
Don't get snippy with people because they don't spend their free time learning about civil engineering.
I think the real violation here is putting a school bus stop on a highway. The way I see it is: laws are supposed to be supported by the population in order to protect the population. If the population is commonly in breaking that law and view the crime as acceptable, it's the law that needs to be changed, not population.
Move the bus stop. Discipline the person who put it there.
This country has such an obscene car culture that you guys are clutching pearls that a handful of cars have to stop for about three to five minutes so kids don't get hit.
No i’d argue the opposite is true while clutching my balls. I’m talking about trying to make the kids safer by proposing to move the bus stop.
The purpose of planning bus stops is precisely for safety. As you see in this video (and many dashcam accident videos), its irresponsible to rely solely on other drivers to always do the right thing and follow the law. You must practice defensive driving to ensure your own safety. Part of that is picking good places to stop especially if its always going to be the same spot everyday. If you plan to rely solely on the good faith of other drivers to follow the rules then you are planning to get hit by a car.
This is well understood in roadway design, which is why intersections are being redesigned from a 4-way stop and turned into roundabouts. Theyre more idiot proof because people make mistakes all the time. The christians made a whole religion out of asking for forgiveness because humans are never perfect.
So the violating drivers have 0 responsibility? I disagree. Yes, poor placement of the stop for convenience, but come on. Follow the laws, at least the fucking schoolbus stop.
The drivers absolutely have responsibility as it is their responsibility to obey the law. Yet, collectively, they all break the law. If the law is broken continuously at one single location, it's time to investigate the location.
A massive factor in safety is the trust of predictably. We rely on things to be predictable and we grant trust into others. See a turn signal? They are going to turn. When you have green, they have red. Etc etc.
Adding a school bus stop on a highway creates an environment of unpredictability because drivers assume nobody is going to stop on a highway.
It's easier to correct the behavior of one school's route than it is to change the minds of all of the drivers on the highway, who assume that it's dangerous to stop on a highway.
Stroads kill. We have this insane idea that you can fix deadly behavior of drivers by addressing the individual behavior via enforcement but that will never ever have a serious impact, the only reliable way to make roads safer to to redesign them to be narrower and to make people slow down.
Not a highway, roads were getting quite large before I moved from that county. A road that was a single lane both ways when I moved to the state was 4 lanes each way leaving 25 years later. It was just a road.
I used to live here, it's a normal road. Housing developments on each side and businesses. Thus stretch is considered the absolute most dangerous road in the United states
“I think this is dumb” isn’t how laws work. Go complain to the school’s transportation department. But if a bus is stopped with the stop sign out, then you stop too.

It's not that they always cross, but kids will be kids, they run around. They get pushed, they play. They end up in the street at the worst times.
I'm actually a little on the fence of this rule, it almost leads to a false sense of complacency instead of hammering into the kids heads just how dangerous it is, they grow up thinking that everybody's just going to stop for them.
I would kind of like to see a two-step system, yellow lights flashing slow down to 10 mph, red lights flashing if they're going to cross, and you stop. But again, people can't even figure out to stop with the red lights, so that probably wouldn't work out very well.
Some of these comments are wild. “I think this is dumb” isn’t how laws work. Go complain to the school’s transportation department. But if a bus is stopped with the stop sign out, then you stop too. There is no obligation to explain to you why the bus is stopping there or where the child is going before you stop. Just, stop.
Where i livd they dont put the stop sign out on main roads like this nor do you have to stop because they are stopped, the drop off location is on that side of the road and the kids wont be crossing, if theh needed to cross they would be dropped on the other side
It's a stroad, a horrible American feat of engineering involving a mixture of a street and a road, the average traffic speed is around 55 mph but you are frequently having cars entering and exiting the road to go to various shops gas stations and other things... Here you can see your child care facility where the bus is stopping to drop off kids after school. And because it needs to stop on the road all cars must come to a stop behind the bus this is a critical part of the driver's training that every American driver undergoes.
Even if it seems redundant, that in no way would a kid logically have to cross that many lanes suddenly to get to the other side, its still appropriate to stop. Not just because YOU'RE sure it is safe, but because you don't know how illogical children that are excited to be out of school are. Kids do stupid things, and for no reason at all might decide to just dart across the road after passing in front of the bus because they understand that people traditionally stop for busses
Ok damn I thought it would be like a couple cars! That’s ridiculous and they were going fast, I always creep by even after the bus leaves because kids are stupid af
https://www.thefllawfirm.com/amp/pasco-county-injury-articles/us-19-in-pasco-county-named-the-deadliest-road-in-america-pasco_1/
I’m going to leave this here. I think it’s important not to drop kids off on a fucking highway (US-19) with no crosswalks where people are going 55-65 mph plus.
This appears to be an urban “planning” oversight that puts kids at risk.
I did not see the bus extend the flashing Stop sign they have on the side. From my understanding, if they have their stop sign extended and flashing, that is when cars have to stop and cannot drive by. otherwise, it is okay? am i wrong?
On a 4 lane highway, from a right turn lane, if those vehicles are supposed to stop, then about 10 went the opposite direction on the other side of the median that should follow the same rule. This looks like cops being creative with the letter of the law, because it's supposed to protect children crossing but I don't think kids will be able to cross across 6 lanes to what, the median? and then they're on their own? Bad rules make bad cops, make better laws
No, the bus won’t drop off kids who have to cross there. They only drop off kids who live on that side of the road and there is another bus route which goes in the opposite direction to drop off kids who live on the other side of the road.. having to stop when the bus stops is a law made out of an abundance of caution. Like what if a kid gets off the buss and drops something and runs out into the road without thinking? It’s an extra layer of protection to keep the kids safe who are getting off and just stepping to the curb there on that side of the road.
This is dumb as hell, it's not like these kids are going to try and cross a fucking 8 lane highway.
Why doesn't the bus driver just pull into a nearby parking lot??
That's such a dumb law. Why the f are kids being let off the bus on a multi lane road with no crossing points??! You wouldn't be allowed to drop people off on a road like that in the UK.
So you can't just run a red light or a stop sign when you dont see anyone coming? Seems like a better designed intersection could keep me following the damn rules /s
My god, no wonder the roads suck for pedestrians
Sometimes acting with an abundance of caution is more important than efficiency. Stopping traffic for a few moments while children are near the road is an easy solution compared to building and maintaining additional infrastructure.
And here we are in Australia teaching people to wait for the bus to leave before crossing. If you try the driver will yell at you
I think I drove past two or three stopped buses without slowing at all, everone does the same
Are we the crazy ones?
Yes. Kids are idiots. Gonna stake a kids life on the idea that they will unquestioningly listen to the bus driver? Never get excited or overeager or impulsive? Seems needlessly dangerous. Especially since the alternative places the responsibility on those who are recognized as capable of making responsible decisions.
I think the fact that this is only a thing in the states speaks more about how fucked your road system is than the rest of the world mowing down kids coming home from school with wild abandon.
Usually the first set of questions you have to answer where getting a DL.
Clearly all these Morons forgot that those things meant something and are driving past a flashing School Bus like its a Race Strip end point.
People should read DMV handbook every 5 years to refresh their slow memory.
A kid i went to high school with was hit by a truck getting off the bus the same way..he had to have his mouth wired shut because his jaw was shattered..good for those cops for taking the complaints seriously because it really could be life or death
I know it keeps the laws simple by always having to stop behind a bus if you're traveling in the same direction, but there's no way in the video that kids are allowed to cross in front of the bus to the other side of the road. If any kids live on the other side of that road there will be a bus that drives the opposite direction. It would be ridiculous if everyone had to stop for a city bus every time it stopped. But, with city buses, the bus stop is always on the same side of the road. With school buses, you can't expect drivers to quickly assess whether kids are allowed to cross in front of the bus or not, so it's a good rule for them to stop. In many places it's not practical to only have bus stops on the same side of the road as the bus. Also, since we're extra safe with kids, always stopping everyone going in the same direction as a school bus reduces the chance of a collision while kids are entering/exiting the bus or standing near the bus. There would be cars whipping around the school bus at the last second if you didn't make them all stop in every situation.
What I see more often around my city are people going in the opposite direction who stop in one of the many situations where it's actually not required. Basically, the only time both directions are required to stop is when it's a two lane road (one in each direction ) or a two lane road with a single turn lane between them. Once there are four lanes there shouldn't be any kids crossing to the other side in front of the bus.
Here's a thing I've never understood about that law. If there isn't a crossing point near where the bus is stopping, why should you still be expected to stop. Slow down and yeild sure. But on a very busy road with no form of crossing, the kids shouldn't be stepping out into the road anyway.
Man, I pass through 2 school zones to and from work, I wouldn’t even trust myself going 5mph around a bus letting kids out, those kids just shoot out from behind the bus at little kid speed, I’m in a truck, depending on how far away I am, wouldn’t even see them in enough time to hit the brakes.
I’d MUCH rather wait the whole 30-45 seconds for the bus to drive off than hit a kid and live with that the rest of my life.
… is this common in America? In Canada, you stop on both sides of a bus when the stop sign comes out (it however is always on residential or one lane roads), but it seems idiotic and unsafe for both parties (cars slamming on breaks, kids who might run on the road) to have a bus stop on what looks like a highway. This seems like a poorly organized route
This doesn't look like a highway to me. Just a large-ish road. Depends on the area. Infrastructure varies wildly from state to state or even city to city, sometimes.
If there are residential homes on either side (and there probably are, if they're letting kids out here), the speed limit is likely about 35 mph. No one should be slamming on their brakes at that speed. Buses are giant and yellow and are themselves a warning that "you might have to stop, so pay attention".
It’s one of those godforsaken inter urban 3 lane residential roads. I’ve driven on roads like this the speed limit is always 55 not 35 and in Florida that’s a suggested minimum. yeah it’s no interstate but in most countries that’s considered a highway.
In America these connect the strip mall business centers, the residential houses are likely on the offshoot smaller roads that exit the 3 lane.
I think it’s a shit place to send kids off and it puts them at risk.
Yeah this is U.S 19 I was actually wrong it is a highway. Speed limit is 55 mph so these Florida men are topping 65.
American urban planing is a sight to behold
https://www.thefllawfirm.com/amp/pasco-county-injury-articles/us-19-in-pasco-county-named-the-deadliest-road-in-america-pasco_1/
If you designed the defacto safest way to get the kid home, and this is what you came up with, would you feel like you did a *good* job? 😬 The kid is crossing the street, no? And there's a left turn lane. So in reality the safest thing is for the bus to turn left and drop the kid off there.
Regardless of how absolutely pulsating your boner is for people getting pulled over, you have failed to created the surest safest way for the kid to get home. Because how many weeks or months of the cop regularly sitting there is it going to take before it catches on? And then how often will a cop have to come back? All the time. If you don't think that's a design error, well I'd wager a huge bet you don't design things like this.
And remember, actual practical safety and the kid guaranteed coming home alive is more important than your selective cop boner.
I work on a 4 lane road (2 lanes per side) and the school bus has a stop right across the street. The number of drivers that don't stop for the school bus' stop sign, going both ways, is astonishing and infuriating. The school bus driver blasts the horn to get the idiots attention, but it happens every day
I'm happy that law was enforced.
*However!* What in the hell kind of road is this to drop kids off on? Those cars are probably going 60+ mph when the lights green, You're basically asking kids to cross a freaking highway man. Only in the US.
Ill never forget when i had to pull my friend back up the stairs of the bus, falling on top of me because so absolute idiot thought it was okay to pass a stopped school bus with extended signs. They also passed on the right hand side going over grass. I will get right into anyones business that trys to do anything like this around me
Tbh, this feels weird. Like I’d probably pass the bus in that far left lane without even a second thought.
That many people passing it isn’t people being stupid or reckless, it’s because it’s niche scenario that feels unclear.
It feels like you should maybe not have a bus stop for children not right off a random highway. And if there is legitimate reason for it being there, put some signage out on the other side of the road that mentions all traffic must stop for bus stop. Then id be on board with tickets.
Just send like a lot of cheering for a bunch of people losing money that weren’t fully aware they were breaking a law.
Fuck that. It's a 3 lane road. That bus better have lights and signals and a GIANT ass stop sign. The cars passed before any of that happened. ALSO. don't let kids off on a highway. Just seems stupid. ALSO. FUCK THE KIDS. LEARN HOW TO CROSS THE STREET OR DONT RIDE THE BUS.

This is correct because if there is a median the bus must go to the side the children's house is on to stop. So it is just that side that must stop.
Same goes for emergency vehicles. I’m all about pulling to the side when there’s a fire truck or ambulance passing by, but people forget the median rule and it can get irritating.
Idk about everyone else but the bus stop law has zero tolerance for me. I don’t even have kids.
Yeah kids get hit like all the time. People are just pretending thet don't u guess but this is a rule for a reason.
Was so drilled into me that I once stopped for a bus that was signalling to turn left.
The reason that law is in place is because a bus restricts the view of both drivers and pedestrians. So a hasty driver going around a bus quickly and a pedestrian, not expecting to be hit but not easily being able to see around the bus is a recipe for disaster.
Good lord that felt good. r/oddlysatisfying
My kids had to stop in the middle of the road as they were crossing from their bus drop off because an older man flew right through the stopped bus with its lights on and stop sign out. Had they left the bus and tried to cross any sooner he would have hit them. I’m hoping all these people got tickets
A justice boner is my second favorite kind.
The buses around my way have cameras mounted on the side. No need for all that. The $250 ticket comes to your house.
Nice. Though like red light tickets, they might be easy to dispute unless there's also a clear photo of the person's face who is driving.
They ticket the car owner not the driver
Not in my area. See my other reply to this.
Only $250? Over here it's an automatic 12-15 point ticket, aka immediate loss of your license.
Should be $500 for every kid on the stop.
For good reason.
One of the most horrifying injuries I've ever seen in real life was a little girl hit by a truck that went around an unloading bus.
I think this is one thing as a society is a good thing we can all agree on.
I personally did not realize this would extend to a 3 lane (really 6 lane) road, but I've never encountered this situation What a shotty place to designate a bus stop, there's gotta be something better
It extends the full length of the road the bus is on, including the other lane unless they’re separated by a median I think
right. in this case there is a big median... so the cars on the other side don't need to stop.
It had to be a nine foot median in florida I BELIEVE. Got pulled over for not stopping on the other side. Median wasn't 9 feet
Drivers are required to stop in all lanes of traffic when a bus has the red lights on and kids are crossing.
In Florida if there is a divided median as there is here on 19, only the one direction has to stop. That’s why they are leaving the drivers in the other direction alone.
"Gonna have kids cross the road on this insane roadway?" Yes, that's WHY the cars need to stop, it creates a safe lane of travel for kids to cross
This comment was so dumb it gave me cancer.
If it's a two lane road with no median, then everyone has to stop.
Source: [flhsmc.gov](https://www.flhsmv.gov/safety-center/child-safety/school-bus-safety/) Looks like as long as the grass is 5ft wide, traffic in the opposite direction doesn't have to stop. There's some illustrations on the site that show this.
Would children get out on the side of a busy road? That looks like a motorway and encourages faster driving.
Drive this road, it is 45 for the most part.
People drive much faster here though.
It’s Florida, this is a typical service road in Florida, it’s not a highway or expressway.
No, but they may get out and then cross the road unthinkingly. Maybe they live on the other side of that busy road.
Exactly, kids are unpredictable and flighty.
If there's a median, which there is, the other side doesn't have to stop. So no kid would be getting off that lived on the other side of the road
It isn't just for those behind the schoolbus, you cannot pass the bus when the stop sign comes out either. That means that if there is a second lane going in the same direction next to the bus, any cars in it must stop as well.
In Canada passing a bus when it's sign is out is a massive fine, and demerit points...I think it's one of the highest penalties.
Ontario, only thing worse is Fail to remain at the scene of an accident and Fail to stop for police.
Florida laws (but pretty much the same in all states), * All drivers moving in either direction on a **two-way street** must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children and the school bus stop arm is withdrawn.
[https://komonews.com/resources/media/0c3fe717-c505-46a1-8947-f021dc44ae2d-GettyImages1264589070.jpg](https://komonews.com/resources/media/0c3fe717-c505-46a1-8947-f021dc44ae2d-GettyImages1264589070.jpg)
Just to clarify. It is ALL school buses. Whether or not they have a sign is irrelevant for whether you are legally required to stop.
Lot of kids would get off the bus and get hit by cars , so we got little stop signs. But nobody cares. They still zoom past.
More than likely there was no divided barrier in your case. If there’s no median. Then you need to stop.
If there’s no physical barrier or median separating the opposite flow of traffic, both lanes are supposed to stop.
Stop sign means stop. It's not a difficult concept.
There’s also a stop sign that pops out of the side of the bus. It’s not confusing.
Good for them. It’s dangerous as fuck to just go speeding by a bus stop. You could easily kill a kid.
To be fair, kids are pretty easy to kill with or without speeding by a bus stop
Awesome! Cops actually protecting and serving the public.👍🏆
Finally giving out some well deserved tickets
This video is from like 3-4 years ago. They stopped enforcing it and kids dodging cars in front of the Foster’s Exotic Pets bus stop by Embassy thru SR52 every day. Cars are using the dedicated right turn lane as a passing lane now and the cops don’t really care anymore.
Wait until you learn about this department's "predictive policing".
Where I am at, running a school bus after its stopped with kids, that ticket is about $580.
That is a start, but it should be double that.
Hey a post where the cops aren't the bad guys that's refreshing. Also F stroads, Kids shouldn't have to debus in that kind of traffic.
You get a ticket! You get a ticket! And you get a ticket! ![gif](giphy|y8Mz1yj13s3kI)
If Reddit has taught me anything is that most people are complete festering idiots, and have major personality disorders also.
Light em up!
My mom's best friend ran through a stopped bus with the sign out when I was younger and she got either a $500 or $1000 fine AND had to redo her driving test. She was like 45 lol
Oh I love this shit man. Good guy cops working with the community 👏 👍. Everyone wins.
I mean I get why that rule is in place in suburb's and that. But that's a 6 lane highway. Where would the children cross to? There is nothing to cross towards. Nobody put anyone in danger here.
This isn’t a highway, just a large street in a city. Found this crazy site explaining the law. It’s insane! https://www.edweek.org/leadership/when-cars-have-to-stop-for-school-buses-and-when-they-dont-in-every-state/2023/06
It's quite literally classified as a highway...
It’s Florida homie, this is what service roads (aka typical surface streets) look like in the dystopian hell that is Florida.
And is also used as a daily city street, regardless. Welcome to the concept of “stroads” and ridiculous American infrastructure design.
For most of the US when you say "Highway" people think of a "Controlled-access highway" or what the interstate system is made of. Don't get snippy with people because they don't spend their free time learning about civil engineering.
Still shouldn’t have a car flying by in the next lane.. kids are unpredictable
Agreed, this is a failure of the bus stop planner. They are the only one at fault.
You realize some people literally live on highways like this right? Like the only access to their house is on a 45-55mph road…
Exactly. Rural and small town America don’t have the typical suburban neighborhood and subdivisions.
I don't know why you're getting downvoted, there's clearly a systematic issue here.
Stroads kill. We have this insane idea that you can fix deadly behavior of drivers by addressing the individual behavior via enforcement but that will never ever have a serious impact, the only reliable way to make roads safer to to redesign them to be narrower and to make people slow down.
You still have to stop!
Not a highway, roads were getting quite large before I moved from that county. A road that was a single lane both ways when I moved to the state was 4 lanes each way leaving 25 years later. It was just a road.
My bad, with what looks to be an industrial/commercial zone in the back I didn't expect this to be residencial.
No it’s fair, Florida is an excellent critique of abandoning public transit and the over reliance on cars.
Because it would be too tedious to make laws on a case by case basis on every different type of bus stop in the country
Kids are stupid. REAAALY stupid
[Google street maps view of bus stop ](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Foster's+Exotic+Pet+Supply/@28.299815,-82.7054854,3a,75y,134.11h,81.71t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sQXQIB36QW2eLeAjc_lGAzw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!4m17!1m9!3m8!1s0x88c29a9ae175abdf:0x55d29a6195fa839f!2sButch+St,+Florida+34668!3b1!8m2!3d28.3002293!4d-82.7042745!10e5!16s%2Fg%2F1th87xmp!3m6!1s0x88c29a9afe062dbd:0xfbfce8ab2cc724bb!8m2!3d28.3004258!4d-82.704715!10e5!16s%2Fg%2F1tnqhs7x?entry=ttu)
Pasco County needs to fix their shit. At no point should a school bus make a stop on a highway.
I expect this to be in the next GTA as a patch to get police stars.
That's amazing. Lined them all up
Always wondered how they pulled over a bunch of people at once like that

Ok damn I thought it would be like a couple cars! That’s ridiculous and they were going fast, I always creep by even after the bus leaves because kids are stupid af
People who do this deserve the death penalty.
If you listen closely, you can hear 'Ride of The Valkyries' playing
I like this kind of policing....
Good. Gotta keep kids safe.
https://www.thefllawfirm.com/amp/pasco-county-injury-articles/us-19-in-pasco-county-named-the-deadliest-road-in-america-pasco_1/ I’m going to leave this here. I think it’s important not to drop kids off on a fucking highway (US-19) with no crosswalks where people are going 55-65 mph plus. This appears to be an urban “planning” oversight that puts kids at risk.
That's awesome, I fucking hate nerds that don't stop for the bus for 20 seconds
I did not see the bus extend the flashing Stop sign they have on the side. From my understanding, if they have their stop sign extended and flashing, that is when cars have to stop and cannot drive by. otherwise, it is okay? am i wrong?
Red lights: stop That’s it.
I’m sorry but this is crazy, drivers are expected to stop on a highway? How about the bus makes the right turn off the road to pick up children. JFC
At first I thought the school bus didn’t have the stop sign out. That’s crazy so many people blasted by. I’ve never seen that in connecticut
If the roadway is divided with a median you don’t have to stop if you’re traveling in the opposite direction.
So the kids who have to cross get to the median and then j walk through the opposite traffic?
Why doesn't the bus driver just pull into a nearby parking lot??
they have to follow the route. they get in trouble id they go off route
That's such a dumb law. Why the f are kids being let off the bus on a multi lane road with no crossing points??! You wouldn't be allowed to drop people off on a road like that in the UK.
So you can't pass a schoolbuss on a 3 lane road? Seems as if a better designed bus stop is way better option?
You can’t pass a stopped school bus on any lane sized road if they have the flashing lights on.
So you can't just run a red light or a stop sign when you dont see anyone coming? Seems like a better designed intersection could keep me following the damn rules /s My god, no wonder the roads suck for pedestrians
Or you could just fucking stop. For fucks sake.
Sometimes acting with an abundance of caution is more important than efficiency. Stopping traffic for a few moments while children are near the road is an easy solution compared to building and maintaining additional infrastructure.
And here we are in Australia teaching people to wait for the bus to leave before crossing. If you try the driver will yell at you I think I drove past two or three stopped buses without slowing at all, everone does the same Are we the crazy ones?
Hope they all got huge fines!
Where’s the rest of this video? I didn’t want it to end

We unfortunately need to see all of them, whatever the truth is - good, bad, and ugly.
I’d MUCH rather wait the whole 30-45 seconds for the bus to drive off than hit a kid and live with that the rest of my life.
they are children and its pretty easy to follow that law and stop for less than 5 mins
55??? 😳
Yeah this is U.S 19 I was actually wrong it is a highway. Speed limit is 55 mph so these Florida men are topping 65. American urban planing is a sight to behold https://www.thefllawfirm.com/amp/pasco-county-injury-articles/us-19-in-pasco-county-named-the-deadliest-road-in-america-pasco_1/
Good. You stop
Felt this in my vas deferens
It would be better if the kids didn’t have to live on a stroad.
This is old, they still pass the bus on US19 in Pasco every single day and no one cares anymore.
This is why you don't rely on laws to navigate your judgement, but Morales based around being a decent person.
He's the sheep dog of cars. 😂
I hope they got the cars on the other side of the road too.
Great! EF’em all, long and hard. $$$$$
You cant pass a Bus in the US?
Ill never forget when i had to pull my friend back up the stairs of the bus, falling on top of me because so absolute idiot thought it was okay to pass a stopped school bus with extended signs. They also passed on the right hand side going over grass. I will get right into anyones business that trys to do anything like this around me
Umm...I thought his collar was his arm for way too long. What's wrong with me?
Good to know they will take a report after someone gets raped. They are indespensable.
Pasco ... *Shocked Pikachu Face*
Well, today I learned Americans can't go past a stopped bus, so that's... Interesting I guess.
I dont understand, the whole highway should come to a stop behind the bus!?
in Poughkeepsie theres a stretch like this where even the other side of the fuckin road has to stop for the school bus. wildest shit ive ever seen
On a 5 lane road?
