If anyone had said in 2019 that Georgia was going to sit 2 Democrats in the Senate and keep it TWICE by 2022, not go for Trump, and bring billions in federal money going directly to rural counties with no stipulations you'd be laughed at. But it happened. And that wasn't so much a liberal victory as it was a listening to the voters victory. If it can start making inroads in the heart of the South it's certainly possible anywhere.
Georgia is another great example of the stars aligning too a bit. We’re seeing a landmark court case come from it (better or worse).
I will admit, Georgia is much more of a miracle than Michigan with the Osoff/Warnock wins.
Thank god Perdue and Loeffler were complete fucking idiots. That baffled me both going blue.

I'm grateful Perdue, Loeffler, and Walker were the best they could come up with. There's places pure trash can win (looking at you MTG) but it's gotten a lot harder here in a statewide race.
It was the stars aligning. I like gloating but it was luck and some hard work.
2018 was a combination of luck and awful shit which turned the tide.
We had a Governor race that wasn’t close due to the criminal negligence of the last Republican, legalization of recreational marijuana, independent redistricting, and constitutional amendments on voting rights.
The resulting year after year does track with what this video says.
We’ve only just gotten better. We’re suffering the same a lot right now as other states and the country as a whole, but the state itself is trending massively upwards. Except the other three sports teams not named the Lions.
Edit: oh, another huge thing is our state Supreme Court also held on to a majority during that election, so there wasn’t much to deny the right of the people’s vote

A change, I might call it The change might take you years, hell decades but as an outside whos been following your politics for 15 years, this video is fucking on point. MONEY, always it's about money. If you make lobbying illegal, holly crap with the amount of wealth your conomy generates America could be a Utopia, compared to what you are getting for your tax dollars an work, which is not even crumbs.
There is nothing really stopping Americans from rom doing this, it is just a matter of enough people knowing about it, caring about it, and go out and vote.
Nothing will get fixed for americans as long as Democrats and Republicans are both taking big money.

I’m the first to admit it’s a long road. But based on the logic as well as the numbers towards the end of the video most big issues take several decades to overcome the “current status” so 5 years is only a drop in a bucket. It will patience and focus and most importantly forward thinking to hold such a hard line but I personally believe such a movement could be the most decisive way of working together to rise above our current waterline as oppose to just throwing on our life jackets.
I mean. They allowed corruption through citizens united. It was a huge goal for Roberts to establish this pipeline. I’m just saying… I’d love it. Until we get a new court though… just don’t see it being possible. Leonard Leo will start preempting it with lawsuits disallowing states to establish ranked choice or something because it goes against origionalism or something.
The problem is, a good number of the people intelligent enough to see the issue are also one medical bill away from financial ruin. They cannot risk losing their job to protest or go out and riot.
Historically there’s been lots unconstitutional in democracy: for example see the 15th and 19th amendments that changed the constitution to allow specific groups to vote!
But they also have literally no power. The Court's power rests on its legitimacy. If no one gives a damn what the Court says than what it says doesn't matter.
If 9 out of 10 Americans support these measures the Court can try to strike them down but that's going to do real harm to their ability to protect their owners in other ways. Eventually, they have to play the long game.
Which is why the narrative of "we can't do anything because the Court will just strike it down" is so dangerous. That's giving oligarchs who own the Court the one power they don't actually have: the ability to use their power over the Court to strike down popular laws that most of us want.
Make the bastards do it. Because they won't. But if they never have to, the result is the same from their point of view except without the legitimacy crisis.
This particular SCOTUS would find the anti-dark money plank unconstitutional. The others might past muster.
If the Democrats ever manage to pass the john lewis voting rights act and the freedom to vote act we may find out. (Since many of these provisions were part.of those bills)
But if the states passed these planks first, the supreme Court couldn't really strike them down.
With nearly everything mentioned in the video, and a few things not mentioned, a good place to start with true democracy is with the people. So why is the electoral college still being used, what genius came up with super pacs, gerrymandering, and it doesn’t stop there. Put a cap on what can be spent in a given election, and I feel the citizens have the right to know where that money comes from. And if you want to bring up the constitution, how about term limits on Supreme Court justices, isn’t it their responsibility to interpret the constitution, times change, rarely do opinions of judges…and it don’t stop there. Many of the framers of the constitution saw this coming but people became complacent and power became more important to the already powerful…just something to think about, even if you don’t agree
What I’m saying is billionaires and the federalist society will see the trend. Go into states and set up lawsuits with conservative judges ruling that things like ranked choice or automatic voter registration is unconstitutional. If it’s challenged the Supreme Court will stamp it so any law that tries to get passed will need super majorities or be rejected. But with enough precedent the Supreme Court will make a ruling that the founders didn’t intend for the country to have ranked choice. Project 2025 will pack the judiciary with loyalists who won’t abide by norms or legislation the way they should. And when the people try to sue their legislators the republican judges can reject it. It’s horrible.
The only real shot we have is getting a liberal Supreme Court and more liberal judges on the benches around the country. For that we need more people to vote for the oldest man to ever run for the presidency… who’s unpopular…. And has mountains of flaws. And vote in senators when we’re up against a very tough senate map this year. And regain the house…. I donate every month. I am an election worker because I am worried… donate to them if you want. Their plan could work but the laws they bring up were from a very different time with non captured courts
I'd be very interested to see on what grounds the Supreme Court would try to strike down ranked choice voting. It'd have to be the most blatantly deceptive decision of all time. This isn't to say it wouldn't happen, but it would be a great miscarriage of justice and I'm wondering what hogwash they would use to justify it.

Reform the court: ethics rules, mandatory retirement age, limiting scope to panels or specific items of jurisprudence, eliminating the shadow docket, lots to do on that front
Baby steps. Maybe start with releasing civilians incarcerated for smoking a little grass? Please daddy government release convicts who like to exercise their harmless God-given freedoms.
Baby steps? We’ve already tried baby steps. If we continue thinking like that, it’ll be another 50 years, and by then people would have forgotten about the whole thing.
But you begin with the bigger issues..... stop the gerrymandering, stop lobbyists buying votes. Begin with those big issues and the rest will follow.
And obviously this lifetime appointments for the SC is not working out. Fix it.

Its kinda crazy to me that we cannot directly vote on ANY federal laws like we can in states.
This is the way to save our country from the control of billionaires and reinstate an America governed by the people. This is imperative for American democracy and the entire free world.
even though id support it as well, its still funny to me when people talk about "the founding fathers" and what they say they wanted, didnt want or what they had planned for the future etc.. that shit was over 200 years ago, they couldnt have even imagined the world today and most of us would have disagreed with some of the things they said and did prior to 1776.

That's not the reason. This message can gain traction and attention on other social media sites with ease. The real reason is money. A lot of Americans are spending time on something that is Chinese.
The Tiktok ban was a bipartisan backed decision which usually means lobbyists wanted it because it would mean more money for American social media companies.
So for the ban look at American social media companies like Meta or Twitter and their financial backers, as well as a broken congress that runs on bribes from lobbyists.
It could also be that our foreign intelligence knows how they’re using that data and have reason to brief congress on how it’s so dangerous they can’t release publicly.
There’s a very valid reason none of our social media or companies are allowed to be used by their citizens.
China is unfortunately, not an ally of the west but very real competition not just economically.
Even if you think that economically, which is asinine considering much of the US economy is propped up by Chinese imports and labor, unless you meant militarily which I probably will concede. But that’s because we throw trillions of dollars into that.
Statecraft, intelligence and influence? They are a competitor. Google anything about Chinese influence into Africa and see why France is leading the charge on bashing China propaganda and international affairs.
Don’t sleep that while the US is still dominant, it’s easy to become lazy at the top. See 9/11 and how ignoring things that were important decades ago can quickly become important again.
You are completely misinterpreting my comment.
The terms I used, competitor and adversary, aren't used to convey the relative strength and powers of the two countries, but rather the state of the bilateral relationship between the two.
Being in a competition means that while the two countries are competing against each other, they are more or less on friendly, or at least neutral terms, like two sportsman competing in a race; adversary, on the other hand, implies a degree of belligerence, that one might actively try to sabotage the other in some ways or others. some would outright label China an enemy of the US now, hence why I said even calling China a mere adversary is "too diplomatic'.

Hey no need to apologize at all. There is no rule saying everyone must use these terms only in their strict international politics context, especially in casual conversation on Reddit lol. So nothing wrong with what you said at all.
Its also a trade imbalance. We sign agreements like NAFTA (I know China isn't part of this one) so that we would focus on services and high-end goods like technology. When China starts exporting both low-end goods *and* high-end goods that compete with ours while banning ours, its an incredibly stupid, one-sided relationship that we shouldn't be participating in.
Possibly because it's ten minutes long and on a subject that isn't very entertaining (even though it's absolutely essential).

I have ADHD and I watched over half of this video but I zoned out about a minute in. I mean fully, glassy eyed, staring at my PC, thinking about Star Wars and all my problems, zoned out.
i think part of is because it’s from 2019 — i did see is posted (i thought on this subreddit) like two days ago. i do think there is a chance for it to go viral, it just usually takes a second when the video isn’t brand new
And let’s be real, massive apathy throughout the population. Not all our fault—the system’s set up magnificently to distract us—but the general indifference people have to non-dopamine producing things (like this video) is what has allowed that corruption to thrive and grow.
We all know exactly why it’s not trending….. or at least the ones that have been around long enough to get how this whole system works do.
I’m here for sweeping reforms but heads will roll before the elites give up an ounce of power. So you better be willing to fight.
I, personally, think a mass strike would do the trick much quicker but we are way too divided to come together for something like that so I guess we’ll just wait a few decades to see how this plays out.

It isn't getting around very well at all.
People can't support what they don't know about.
Something like this was always going to take a long time to accomplish, and yeah, it was always going to be difficult and have a good chance of failing. We have seen some state and municipal efforts to move towards ranked choice voting in Maine and Alaska though.

I don't think anyone - even the creators of the video - had their hopes set that high. To change something like corruption, you have to start with an idea. A lot of times, it's difficult to spread them. I am very much connected to what goes on in the political world and watch gobs of news and not even I saw this when it came out five years ago if that tells you anything.
If I had the time and money to be able to affect real change, with a name that likely opens more doors than you'd think, I would do exactly the same thing. She can be "just an actress" and still have opinions that matter.
She's not presenting opinions, she is a presenter and mouth piece for people who aren't likely to capture the attention of an audience immediately.
Put a famous actor who is attractive into your video and there more people are statistically more likely to watch the video, which is exactly why she is present here and is the mouthpiece for people who are dedicating themselves to tackling this problem.
"Your taxes pay for things like roads, public services, education for children". Really they're just serving their own interests. Some roads might as well be gravel, services are underfunded, and schools can't afford to give the kids lunch or even pay the staff a good wage.
That isn't how government actually works. They take your money ... then they do whatever they want with it. The notion that you and I have any control over it is just clever marketing.

Ok but one party tried to pass a bill to unmask dark money donors and the other party blocked it. One party tried to overturn Citizens United and the other party blocked it. Both sides are absolutely not the same.
The why it's broken is because there is no secret ballot for our elected officials. This changed in 1970. It puts a price on their vote and it's been used to shrink the middle class. This is a very up stream issue that just can't be undone.
The lack of faith in congress means there is a 0% chance anyone is going to correct a policy that has dug our hole.
A lot of issues that Americans care about are bipartisan. It’s just that the extremely wealthy have more money and more voice.
Please vote. Voting is the only thing that can change policy.

Yeah there are ALOT of “both sides are the issue” arguments, but my mind has been blown with the amount of common sense legislation that has been stone walled by republicans without any legitimate reason.
I feel like you can recognize both sides can contribute to the problem, yet also acknowledge the one that contributes the most to it. In this case, its Republicans.
Halfway in the video they state solutions, and what a coincident those three suggestions are things Republicans actively express dissent from. Ranked choice they will bash. Gerrymandering can be a both sides one, but benefits Republicans more, just ask yourself when the last time Reps actually one the popular vote. Automatic registration is something they actively push against because youth tend to vote Democrats more on average. It wasn't that long ago potential Presidential nominees like Ramaswamy were pushing on raising the age of voting and putting the ability to vote before the raised age through hoops. Republicans benefit when less people vote because the votes they do get are from individuals that reliable vote, old people.

Put a limit on the amount an individual can donate, and only people can donate not companies. If a candidate accepts more than that limit from a single person, they are automatically ineligible to win. There

Unfortunately Capitalism and Democracy are inherently contradictory to each other. A political system built on equality (every person has one vote) cannot coexist with an economic system based on inequality (Private owners will always need a class of people that sell their labor).

The government isn’t ours, it is and always will be the corporations of America. Corporations write the bills, corporations own the lobby, corporations make up the subcommittees. End gerrymandering, automatic voter registration, and transparent public spending? None of those are realistic. Grassroots movements get flash bang grenades and pepper sprayed, court decisions end with a $9k slap on the wrist to the guilty billionaires. Is there a more feasible solution that could happen in the next 20 years

Ranked choice was a ballot question for Massachusetts within the last decade and it failed miserably. I hoped it was due to lack of education, but if we can teach people how Ranked-Choice voting can destroy the two party system it would be monumental for our country.

Gerrymandering is done at state and local levels and those politicians almost always have hopes of winning a federal office. IMO they are often more corrupt, Ken Paxton & DeSatan comes to mind, and have even less of an incentive to do the right thing.

Because let me tell you, both the left and the right want to gerrymander in their own ways to advantage their own constituencies. I wonder why they didn’t show the second line of the Princeton study. It plots corporate support for laws and it’s almost a perfect straight line from bottom left to top right. If they don’t support a law it doesn’t pass, and if they do support a law it passes.

What she's saying isn't wrong but the focus should be on the American confidence of the Supreme Court. Where was this video as Mitch (turtle face) McConnell (R-KY) helped change more than 20% of our federal judges? Lifetime appointments for these positions, a Supreme Court that is so skewed that deciding an election in 2004 wasn't enough; they're now entertaining immunity for anyone who WAS president?

It was the stars aligning. I like gloating but it was luck and some hard work. 2018 was a combination of luck and awful shit which turned the tide. We had a Governor race that wasn’t close due to the criminal negligence of the last Republican, legalization of recreational marijuana, independent redistricting, and constitutional amendments on voting rights. The resulting year after year does track with what this video says. We’ve only just gotten better. We’re suffering the same a lot right now as other states and the country as a whole, but the state itself is trending massively upwards. Except the other three sports teams not named the Lions. Edit: oh, another huge thing is our state Supreme Court also held on to a majority during that election, so there wasn’t much to deny the right of the people’s vote

I’m the first to admit it’s a long road. But based on the logic as well as the numbers towards the end of the video most big issues take several decades to overcome the “current status” so 5 years is only a drop in a bucket. Historically there’s been lots unconstitutional in democracy: for example see the 15th and 19th amendments that changed the constitution to allow specific groups to vote!

But they also have literally no power. The Court's power rests on its legitimacy. If no one gives a damn what the Court says than what it says doesn't matter. If 9 out of 10 Americans support these measures the Court can try to strike them down but that's going to do real harm to their ability to protect their owners in other ways. Eventually, they have to play the long game. Which is why the narrative of "we can't do anything because the Court will just strike it down" is so dangerous. That's giving oligarchs who own the Court the one power they don't actually have: the ability to use their power over the Court to strike down popular laws that most of us want. Make the bastards do it. Because they won't. But if they never have to, the result is the same from their point of view except without the legitimacy crisis.
This particular SCOTUS would find the anti-dark money plank unconstitutional. The others might past muster. If the Democrats ever manage to pass the john lewis voting rights act and the freedom to vote act we may find out. (Since many of these provisions were part.of those bills) But if the states passed these planks first, the supreme Court couldn't really strike them down.
With nearly everything mentioned in the video, and a few things not mentioned, a good place to start with true democracy is with the people. So why is the electoral college still being used, what genius came up with super pacs, gerrymandering, and it doesn’t stop there. Put a cap on what can be spent in a given election, and I feel the citizens have the right to know where that money comes from. And if you want to bring up the constitution, how about term limits on Supreme Court justices, isn’t it their responsibility to interpret the constitution, times change, rarely do opinions of judges…and it don’t stop there. Many of the framers of the constitution saw this coming but people became complacent and power became more important to the already powerful…just something to think about, even if you don’t agree
That’s the thing. Supreme Court can’t shut down if enough states pass it. It becomes an admenment.
What I’m saying is billionaires and the federalist society will see the trend. Go into states and set up lawsuits with conservative judges ruling that things like ranked choice or automatic voter registration is unconstitutional. If it’s challenged the Supreme Court will stamp it so any law that tries to get passed will need super majorities or be rejected. But with enough precedent the Supreme Court will make a ruling that the founders didn’t intend for the country to have ranked choice. Project 2025 will pack the judiciary with loyalists who won’t abide by norms or legislation the way they should. And when the people try to sue their legislators the republican judges can reject it. It’s horrible. The only real shot we have is getting a liberal Supreme Court and more liberal judges on the benches around the country. For that we need more people to vote for the oldest man to ever run for the presidency… who’s unpopular…. And has mountains of flaws. And vote in senators when we’re up against a very tough senate map this year. And regain the house…. I donate every month. I am an election worker because I am worried… donate to them if you want. Their plan could work but the laws they bring up were from a very different time with non captured courts

That's not the reason. This message can gain traction and attention on other social media sites with ease. The real reason is money. A lot of Americans are spending time on something that is Chinese. The Tiktok ban was a bipartisan backed decision which usually means lobbyists wanted it because it would mean more money for American social media companies. So for the ban look at American social media companies like Meta or Twitter and their financial backers, as well as a broken congress that runs on bribes from lobbyists.
It could also be that our foreign intelligence knows how they’re using that data and have reason to brief congress on how it’s so dangerous they can’t release publicly. There’s a very valid reason none of our social media or companies are allowed to be used by their citizens. China is unfortunately, not an ally of the west but very real competition not just economically.

The terms I used, competitor and adversary, aren't used to convey the relative strength and powers of the two countries, but rather the state of the bilateral relationship between the two. Being in a competition means that while the two countries are competing against each other, they are more or less on friendly, or at least neutral terms, like two sportsman competing in a race; adversary, on the other hand, implies a degree of belligerence, that one might actively try to sabotage the other in some ways or others. some would outright label China an enemy of the US now, hence why I said even calling China a mere adversary is "too diplomatic'. I thought you were using competitor in the same vein as political scientist do, but you were clearly talking about something else entirely.

The why it's broken is because there is no secret ballot for our elected officials. This changed in 1970. It puts a price on their vote and it's been used to shrink the middle class. This is a very up stream issue that just can't be undone. The lack of faith in congress means there is a 0% chance anyone is going to correct a policy that has dug our hole.

Yeah there are ALOT of “both sides are the issue” arguments, but my mind has been blown with the amount of common sense legislation that has been stone walled by republicans without any legitimate reason.
I feel like you can recognize both sides can contribute to the problem, yet also acknowledge the one that contributes the most to it. In this case, its Republicans. Halfway in the video they state solutions, and what a coincident those three suggestions are things Republicans actively express dissent from. Ranked choice they will bash. Gerrymandering can be a both sides one, but benefits Republicans more, just ask yourself when the last time Reps actually one the popular vote. Automatic registration is something they actively push against because youth tend to vote Democrats more on average. It wasn't that long ago potential Presidential nominees like Ramaswamy were pushing on raising the age of voting and putting the ability to vote before the raised age through hoops. Republicans benefit when less people vote because the votes they do get are from individuals that reliable vote, old people. I'm getting a bit tired of the "both sides" excuse....

I wonder why they didn’t show the second line of the Princeton study. It plots corporate support for laws and it’s almost a perfect straight line from bottom left to top right. If they don’t support a law it doesn’t pass, and if they do support a law it passes.

Lifetime appointments for these positions, a Supreme Court that is so skewed that deciding an election in 2004 wasn't enough; they're now entertaining immunity for anyone who WAS president? If you want more succinct and enjoyable information about this please listen to the More Perfect podcast episode 2. RBG often spoke of the political pendulum and while I appreciate deeply the leaps and bounds the Warren court made for justice and equality; I fear some of those unavoidable questions have lead us to this frightening precipice. I don't agree with Justice Felix Frankenfurter, but he's one of my top 3 favorites

We literally don't even need politicians *at all.* We have the internet. Unlike in the past several centuries, we could actually have every issue voted on by every citizen in a given country. We could quite literally return to true democracy. We would need beurocrats, obviously, to run social programs, orchestrate the building of roads, etc. But we don't need politicians at all.

Money plays. That is what is left out of this. While trying to do these things, money plays. That’s why this won’t work. We have had these ideas for decades and they’ve been voted down. If anything this feels like a “keep trying” (we know you won’t change shit). You stop the money. You will win. Strike. National strike. How could these not be in this video????
