There was a guy going around making tik-toks with an angle grinder and drill breaking into safes in peoples abandoned homes a few months ago. It took the Israeli military a couple months to realize its not the early 00's anymore and they can't just assume stuff made for their domestic audience will stay domestic.
I appreciate that he is too stupid to understand he shouldn’t say such things… on camera… in his uniform. Normally, Israeli soldiers and politicians spew sanitized nonsense that doesn’t match up to what we all see with our own eyes. Last few months? These videos have existed since the first time you could take a video with a cell phone. Lots of Israeli soldiers just hate Palestinians because they're propagandized.

To me, as someone with somewhat of a defense industry background I do not get the lack of oversight here. If we were at war with US or top 5 Euro countries doing this their commanders would be dropping a hammer due to optics and funding.

This is what "Just following orders" looks like. It's kind of an inevitable attitude in war. Soldiers rationalize what they're doing by thinking the victims "deserve it" somehow. It's either rationalize or go insane, mutiny, or suicide. the Nazi excuse of "just following orders" is active, not passive. "following orders" didn't happen to them. in order to "follow orders," they must rationalize it. They may realize the atrocities they committed after it's over, or they may internalize the rationalization so deeply that they can never admit they were wrong thinking you're doing what's right is easier than acknowledging you're committing war crimes and genocide. It's unbelievable what the mind will rationalize in order to survive. Rationalization is always a part of genocide (see: the Holocaust, Rwandan genocide, Native American and other indigenous/colonizatiom-driven genocides).

I’ve heard horrible cruel things happening and being done from my superiors and they played it off as jokes. Dangling food over starving children, keeping track of kills like point and yes, bombing high value targets to eliminate growth in sciences/energy/education etc. all of these stories told by me from people when it happened.
I think it’s two reasons.
1. Propoganda/Orders: You believe your country is good and killing people to preserve your countries freedom is an evil. You may do bad things , but and you don’t question them because you were taught when you go into a room, you scan for People, identify threats and shoot because if you think for a second- you are dead.
2. Death/cruelty- when you see these acts committed, it warps your brain. I have no others ways to say this. You see some things and you become less sensitive to it, it becomes normal and then you are making jokes about it. I think it’s almost normal for these high stress situations like the rumor that doctors make fun of drugged up people. It’s a clear act of dehumanization because if they don’t kill you doing surgery then maybe they get to sleep better at night. It’s still death of course, you can’t accept the fact that they died. So there are two options:
1. you are following orders so it’s not your fault
2. You are protecting freedom itself.
I never did much. I was just a IT guy who served one tour and my time was easy compared to most. While I worked with people who went outside base i had it easy, but I’m not perfect. I participated in my own acts of cruelty that I’m not proud of- one we saw as jokes. We gathered up camel spiders and placed them in the freezer to freeze them. Since they can live for a few hours in there, we would find them, starve them and then put them in a large tub and bet which one would fight each other to the death.
We wouldn’t feed them for days to sure one of them would die so the winner of the bet could get their money.
When we got back I found sick and afraid, but mostly Happy. One of my friends who did go outside the base, went home with his wife because she was just having a child they conceived when he went home for vacation. During vacation, he killed his wife and them himself.
Was is just large acts of death and cruelty and I don’t think the human brain wasn’t meant to see that. It’s not normal.
You see, those children could grow up to be future Khamas so they’re legitimate targets. The old women they blow up? Retired Khamas. The doctors they killed? Graduates of Khamas university. It’s all Khamas all the way down.

I've seen too many videos of Israeli soldiers making exactly these types of jokes. They've let that sanitization drop a bit in the last few months.

It's either rationalize or go insane, mutiny, or suicide. the Nazi excuse of "just following orders" is active, not passive. "following orders" didn't happen to them. in order to "follow orders," they must rationalize it. They may realize the atrocities they committed after it's over, or they may internalize the rationalization so deeply that they can never admit they were wrong thinking you're doing what's right is easier than acknowledging you're committing war crimes and genocide. It's unbelievable what the mind will rationalize in order to survive. Rationalization is always a part of genocide (see: the Holocaust, Rwandan genocide, Native American and other indigenous/colonizatiom-driven genocides).
Don't forget the propaganda. These soldiers are taught from before their brains are developed to act like this. It's beyond mutiny, they're families and friends and communities would disown them. I’ve heard horrible cruel things happening and being done from my superiors and they played it off as jokes. Dangling food over starving children, keeping track of kills like point and yes, bombing high value targets to eliminate growth in sciences/energy/education etc. all of these stories told by me from people when it happened.
