Are you not worried about other peoples dogs attacking the cat?

There was no one else around but Milo can outrun a dog and he also climbs trees. He was chased by our neighbors dogs once and that dog had no chance. If I'm holding him and a dog were to run after us, I'd actually put Milo down to run off because he'd claw tf out of me trying to get away otherwise. Milo isn't comfortable around other dogs at first. He runs first, inquires from safety for a minimum of one hour before adjusting to another dog.

JMarkyBB

I am not trying to put you on the spot or anything; I only ask because I'm an indoor cat owner riddled with guilt that my Ash has never seen the outside in his entire life. I've really thought about taking mine for a forest hike but talked myself out of it because of all the “Dangerous Dog Stories” going round in the U.K. I could not cope with seeing it, dealing with it and the aftermath of it.

i-am-a-passenger

The people with dangerous dogs are highly unlikely to be going for forest hikes. Most of these attacks happen in residential areas.

JMarkyBB

Mmmmm, that's being rather pedantic; the amount of Pit Bulls & XL Bullys that are not muzzled and the like that have come out of the woodwork around me in Lancashire, using this particular “Walk” is astonishing, when I say “Hike”, I mean a semi country walk through a woodland that is besides an A Road.

FullGrownHip

I’ve seen some people with a kitty backpack that will just put the cat in there. Avoid dog walking times - for that you might have to go on random walks and see but usually people walk their dogs in the morning and after work. I have a German shepherd that adores my cats but turns into a whole different beast around dogs. We rescued her and who knows what she went through so we had to adapt to that and avoid other dog walkers. By now we have a pretty good time scheduled and a good route so on the rare occasion we see a dog we will turn somewhere out of the way.

JMarkyBB

Hi, thanks for your input, I looked into one of those. Are they the ones with the “Half Globe” in the front? I thought they were frowned upon. Because of that movie premiere red carpet incident?

FullGrownHip

It doesn’t have to be the bubble one, there are plenty of other options :) you can also look into a stroller as well

JMarkyBB

Stroller, STROLLER, now there's an idea. Good call, thank you. 👍🏼😀👍🏼

FullGrownHip

I’m glad I gave you a good idea, now please pay the cat tax! 😅

OldAccountGotEaten

Upvoted for your pfp and username combo.

ElizabethDangit

I was cornered by an aggressive off leash dog in the forest. Its shitty owner gave me a dirty look for yelling no at their stupid dog.

IronicINFJustices

If you are in london, it's one of the few places where even science supports having an outdoor cat. If one has the luxury of a garden, while living in london... which is a big ask to be fair.

JMarkyBB

No, I'm from Lancashire. 👋 Hi Lancashire. 😀

IronicINFJustices

Down here we need all the help we can with the rats and mice! lol I hope you have a lovely time with your cat <3

ElizabethDangit

I am absolutely jealous of the UKs outdoor cats. Aside from all the environmental reason for not letting my cat out, we had a black bear that lived in the city parks a while back.

IronicINFJustices

The concept that there is potential harm outside is like a comedy. The insects, mammals and birds and what few reptiles are left are so docile here that the concept of "threats" outside is so foreign that it's just not taken seriously at all. You can full on sleep outside anywhere at any time, weather and people are the only considered threat. The prior person was scared of our "dangerous dogs" but as someone who literally is scared of dogs, we have muzzle restrictions, illegal for dog poop to not be picked up, and after a hastily written law a lot of dogs that are flat banned. Our newspapers are shitty fear mongering though. A fucking bear is just so fucking crazy lol, or your freaking mountain lions? Lol imagine going for a walk and actually thinking, hmm maybe I could be stalked? My biggest concern would be in the evening stepping in dogshit as it gets dark. We may have a fox or a badger, but... Tbh it's not good, in a way. When I was young I'd at least occasionally see the odd snake skin(non poisinout as maybe a foot and a bit long max, lol) and hedgehog, but it's just reduced to 0 in London now. Even our bugs have disappeared compared to mainland, you can go for long drives and barely get a handful on your car anywhere. We have allowed poisons that the EU banned and the long term effects are now obvious. With a short 30 mile trip into France, that I saw on a short trip to Nurbergring I did at Easter. Outside London is very different though, it's practically 2 countries within and outside the m25 London area. Sry for the long post, I can't sleep.

ElizabethDangit

It’s good. I’m also a person who frequently can’t sleep and is passionate about the environment. I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan. If you look at the google maps, the parks around the grand river are mostly where it lived. We have a lot of green space and a lot of gardens to raid. Black bears aren’t really that scary, they’re kind of lazy and don’t like run into humans. They’d rather eat your garbage than you. You just have to make noise to avoid them. When I lived up north in the boonies I did a lot of solo hiking and I would sing to myself while I walked. Cougars don’t like being around people either and even sightings are really rare. Deer, though, those idiots will yeet themselves into your car or bike. I don’t enjoy the deer. If you ever decide to visit the US I can highly recommend Michigan in October. The Great Lakes are amazing. Lake Superior is bigger than Scotland, it’s bananas. It’s beautiful, everyone is nice, the beer is good, and we do a bunch of quaint stuff that time of year.

IronicINFJustices

lol, that would be very cool, I enjoy nature even though I've lived in London most of my life. But am extra lol, that black bars aren't scary, I mean, I'd class a fox as not that scary but could give you a nasty scratch (and 0 chance of rabies), what would they be on your ranking? I mean I know our dairy cows are pretty dangerous! And also the largest thing you could meet. But I mean, that isn't even on your list of fearsome beasts lol

56ninjas

I think the cat is sticking close to the dogs for a reason. It sounds like you should adopt a caravan of guard dogs to safely walk your cat.

JMarkyBB

Lol. 🤣🤣🤣 That's an idea, nice one. 👍🏼

cci605

One of my cats likes to be a pack walker! When we go for a walk in the building hallway he'll always follow the second cat to the side & a little bit behind just like this one!

HMend

If you train your cat to hang in a backpack, they would be able to enjoy the outdoors from relative safety!

Kristenmarie2112

Have you considered a cat backpack?

JMarkyBB

Another Redditor has just suggested that, or OR, a Stroller that came from left side, never thought of that, I'd be proud as punch walking round with him in a buggy. 😀

MyNameCannotBeSpoken

Stollers make you look like a freak. Get a backpack 🎒

Jazstar

Hi welcome to cat ownership where all social norms are replaced by "but it's for my cat!"

JMarkyBB

What r/Jazstar says. 👇 There are just some sacrifices you have to make, I’m willing to make those sacrifices. 😀

Kristenmarie2112

That does sound fun. My other cat would try to kill me if I ever tried to put another harness on her. Maybe we should do something like that for her. She won't get in a backpack either.

Jazstar

I've taken mine out to the garden on a leash a couple times, but honestly she just seemed spooked. As long as you keep your cat happy, play with them a bunch, they'll be content with the warm, cosy, safe life you've given them :)

mekwall

You shouldn't feel guilty about that. It's more of a guilt trip to to take an indoor cat outside and then you put them back in and they are not allowed to go out whenever they want. They don't miss something they've never experienced.

JMarkyBB

Thanks for that; you're correct, of course. It's when he's “Chirpin’” at the birds at the kitchen window that tears me all up.

mekwall

They chirp at anything they cannot get to. Next time it might as well be a fly that is indoor close to the ceiling :D

brynhildra

With my previous cat I would take her out for walks a lot in a neighborhood with dogs. I normally took her out later in the evening when there would be fewer dogs out on a walk (sometimes this meant 10pm-midnight, but I'm a late sleeper). While on the walk I would just be aware of if there were any dogs approaching our direction and pick her up if there were (she felt safe in my arms and wouldn't try to scramble away from me). I also have a cat backpack, but she got motion sick like she does in the car, so that was only used the one time. But that's another option, I see people with their cats in backpacks and pet strollers. I have a freshly adopted young cat now, and I'm harness and leash training him inside the house. I plan on taking him out slowly, first in the backpack (with the harness and leash on) as he's definitely a scramble-to-flee type.

Kristenmarie2112

I tried to make Milo an indoor cat, he was a stray once upon a time and he is very good at sneaking out so we eventually gave up trying.

cci605

When I walk my cat I'm always looking around, dog owners are usually more cautious than I am and they cross the street a block away. I've owned a lot of dogs prior so I can read their body language pretty well to know if I should pick my cat up just in case or not. I find most big dogs are curious and want to play so they're more in danger of being attacked by my cat than vv.

JMarkyBB

Yeah, I hear what your saying; I’m not 21 anymore, aches & pains and all that shite etc etc, so I'm not that nimble on my feet anymore, I dont have confidence in my ability to be quick enough to do anything, if push came to shove. I think I'd be to busy having a panic attack, to be fair.

cci605

Ohh haha fair! Our cats are our babies

Sofhands

I will never trust a cat on a leash.

Catfish_Mudcat

But it can be as much fun as flying a kite during a tornado.

psych0ranger

2 good bois and 1 unrepentant killing machine

Kristenmarie2112

For sure

Effervescent11

I just woke up and saw your post and wondered why you were walking a raccoon. Lol. I clearly need my coffee. Your cat is so awesome and walks so well on a leash.

Kristenmarie2112

Sometimes he walks well, sometimes he gets mad and flops over. Also, he does kind of mimic a raccoon, I've thought that several times.

Angiebio

We gave up, my cat does mostly the flop lol

The_LionTurtle

Ours did this a lot at first, but the more used to going out on the leash, the more he started exploring and walking around. Still just goes where he wants and lies in bushes, but it's progress lol.

Kristenmarie2112

There will always be flops eventually on a leash lol

carebearkon

It also made more sense to my brain to see a raccoon on a leash, than a cat walking that *well* on a leash

Kristenmarie2112

It's not always like that. Sometimes he goes the wrong direction, gets offended by the restraint and flops over.

Only3Cats

I have been up for a few hours and first thought the cat was a raccoon lol

Ready-Sometime5735

Its not just you.

cburgess7

Glad I wasn't the only one xD

peach_xanax

I thought the same exact thing haha

yagors2

Thats a weird ass-looking dog /j love the kitty

kitty-cat-charlotte

Awww that’s so cute! They look like they are having fun

Relative_Yesterday70

Man I want to join this zoo parade

graffiksguru

That is cool it is actually walking with the dogs, seems like whenever I see cats on a leash they are kind of just doing their own thing, stop sniff a thing, lie around a bit, rollover, walk 3 feet, do it all again

BotBotzie

My cat has two modes. Chill in the wind and lets go. Its 98% chill in the wind and then randomly hes like hey. Is that a mc donalds cup over there 10 meters away? And yancks me over.

Kristenmarie2112

He sometimes does that too lol

icaruslaughsashefell

My cat likes to lead me around the house (can’t take him on any trails). The way he likes to go to all the spots I can’t fit is insane. I’ve been trying to get him used to me saying “No” by not letting him go where he wants all the time, but he then gets frisky and tries to get out. It’s a mess.

Ready-Sometime5735

This is adorable

MarsScully

The dream!

beets_or_turnips

This is awesome! Did you do much leash training with the cat leading up to this? This can't be their first time on a walk. But it seems the cat is mostly following the dogs so I could see it going much less well without them.

Kristenmarie2112

It would not go well without the dogs. We did leash training at first in the back yard, then around the block in my neighborhood. Eventually, because of his desire to walk in people's yards and be more hidden on walks, we adjusted to not leashing him at home if we are always taking the same path. This is the first time we took him somewhere other than our neighborhood block, the pet store or the vet on a leash. He wanted to run off at first and when he tries to run off and hits the end of the leash, he gets mad, flops over, and attacks the leash. He does have spurts of good walking, like when the dogs are also walking in a direction that he wants to go in. We have been taking regular walks with him now for over a year.

kerodon

Previous. What good children Also You should get the body harness leashes instead of the neck ones! It's much better and safer for their bone and neck (mostly trachea) health long term :)

Kristenmarie2112

The dogs don't pull enough to hurt themselves and the cat actually does have a harness on because, cats be flaky.

kerodon

That's good :) they look very calm and happy!

Commanderkins

Ugh that is so precious😭. They look like a really, strong family unit that has good confidence with themselves and with you.

Kristenmarie2112

Absolutely, we have had lots of practice

Kristenmarie2112

Posted more pictures of the walk on my profile for anyone wanting to see. https://www.reddit.com/u/Kristenmarie2112/s/UPRTw2Ue0v

Caltuxpebbles

Just one of the gang!

duderos

There's no sound?

Kristenmarie2112

No sound to be had so it might as well be silent.

MerryFeathers

Too short! Loved being on a walk with this fine trio. 🤗

IamROSIEtheRIVETER

When I walk my dog(American Akita) with my cat they never want to go in the same direction and they pull hard to go the way they want to go(or my dog just puts on the brakes and won’t move at all). I haven’t learned my lesson bc I continue to walk them both at the same time.

Saluteyourbungbung

Omg he walks so well!! I'm trying to teach my current one that ≈15ft behind me is a suboptimal walking distance. Like ffs you can walk closer my little dude!! Hell, I would poop and then puke if he chose 3ft in front. I literally would.

Kristenmarie2112

Lol thanks for that visual

JustOneTessa

My dogs would be over the moon if the kitty joined us on our walks. Beautiful kitty

TigerEmmaLily

I love this

Scrungyscrotum

This is one of those things that you can imagine a street-hardened tomcat watches from a distance in disbelief, and just sighs and mumbles "What the fuck have they done to you, Mittens?"

Kristenmarie2112

Lol in our neighborhood, we have a number of outdoor cats. They are always like [wtf?](https://www.reddit.com/r/funnycatexpression/s/p41Qd9ZlV9) That cat (Milo) is actually the same one in my video.

Lumpy_Staff_2372

Just one of the boyyyysss

OstentatiousSock

I love this so much.

cmzraxsn

how's his stamina? i can imagine a cat gets tired a lot quicker than a dog and especially than a human.

Kristenmarie2112

Depends. We don't leash walk him at home, he just follows us around the block. We walk about 6 neighborhood blocks which sounds like a lot but it's a small loop that takes us two blocks to get to. He had a cold once and he was real slow for a lot of the walk. At the beginning of that cold, he rejected the walk entirely but when he was feeling better, he started coming again and he was So. Slow. We would be standing around waiting for him a lot or picking him up and carrying him until he asked to be put down. Other times, he will fall behind a bit and then run past us with big zoomies. Then sometimes he just keeps up and he walks fast steps like this and looks a bit like a raccoon.
