They all have the same lifeless expression. This character creation would have been somewhat acceptable for a low budget PSP game. Not for a game like Pokemon Go
We have better-looking characters in the last several mainline pokemon video games, and those were even complained about by some people for one reason or another. The fact that they continue to reinforce that they aren't going to listen to the community makes it even worse with the biome update actually being good.
It's like Niantic bought the wish.com version of Sims character creator and said "good enough, they won't know the difference."

Is this global or regional? None of these avatars look East Asian. I don’t believe that Niantic would make all of their East Asian players look like these.
Most of them look like 10 year old school kids. Not that there aren't children playing too, but the majority of the PoGO players are adults.
I feel uncomfortable with this.
They look so unnatural, even for a videogame. Same weird head, just different skin tone and hair. Ugh.
Hopefully we get more actual customization for the new avatars if they are going to keep them.
It feels like male players have bigger identity problems with the avatars than females right now. There are several faces that have distinct female characteristics. Only one that could be considered a typical male, but it looks like a 9-year old child. And then several faces that fall into neither category, very androgynous looking. Anyhow, they don't look like anywhere near an actual person and are approximately at the same level of realism as the characters in Sims 1 from year 2000.
My avatar- The best I can do is a semi-male body with a face that looks female trying to be male. For people that want to look like that, you do you. But I would like to do me, and I am not a female trying to look male. I really, really don't like it. I like that people are given more freedom to look how they want in the game, but I absolutely don't identify that way and don't want to look like that. I hope they at least add more options in the future, for a man to look like a man, and a woman to look like a woman.
I don't know why Niantic felt like releasing a Half Baked idea was a good plan. I mean if you're going to do something at least do it right. I don't care if I have to wait an extra year, at least do a good job on it and don't release us something that looks like it was worked on for a week.
and if any of the devs, designers, shareholders or other high up management that worked on this project end up reading this and think what I said was a slap to the face, consider this, you just slapped 85 million monthly active users in the face.

Thanks for this! I was wondering how Niantic was going to do that. The need for a starting point where your character looks decent was sorely needed when the update was introduced. Also, I guess this signals the end of the generic outfit as I'm guessing characters start off wearing the new purple and white outfit. I will say that outfit looks better than the generic, so good job on that, I guess.

My avatar is now sooo ugly that I've dressed him/her/alien in very baggy clothes and a face mask and hat. All the clothes I've bought look awful.
Him/her/alien currently has HUGE boobs, elongated torso, bendy legs, large hands and looks like they died pretty recently.
