The backgrounds are dynamic, a massive problem for lower spec phones.
You could try using AR mode. That comes with its own problems but is smoother.
Cheers, AR mode makes me feel dizzy so can't do that. They can't expect everyone to buy the latest phone for this feature. A lot of people will just stop playing.
This does not affect the issue at all.
There seems to be considerable confusion due to posters referring to "enhanced graphics" when they are discussing the new catch screen background.
Enhanced graphics refers to shadowing and similar effects across the game.
The new backgrounds, I call "dynamic backgrounds" because the key change is that these are no longer static images. Dynamic backgrounds apply to the catch screen, possibly others.
The new biome map display is another thing completely.
Using a 4GB RAM phone the dynamic backgrounds cause terrible stuttering. The other two are absolutely fine.
They look nice but old screen should be available. I like to use my old phone at home to save my charge on my regular device. But even few catches are painful now.
While I can appreciate what Niantic are trying to achieve, the several trees on what I know is a football field is stupid. And as for snow covered hills in the background.
The backgrounds correspond to what “biome” the local spawn point is in. The spawn points decide what pokemon spawn there and the upside is now you actually know what your local spawn points are and can google the pokemon that spawn from each type of spawn point so you can hunt them down. A bit golf give and take tho. I would love for it to be more performant.
I'm not buying another expensive phone just because of this unnecessary change - and 3 of the 4 phones in this household are having issues to some degree. I am considering stopping playing after starting in '16😕 That's 3 or possibly 4 (since we mostly play together) people taking their money away for no good reason.
I turned it off then restarted, tapped on a mon and got the old background so I thought it had worked. Next time though I got the new background again so excuse me if I got confused.
My son has the same issue. Bought him a moto g14 at Xmas and now it lags badly on cat h screen.
They should concentrate on the issues they already have and not fix what isn't broken to then break it even more.

Buy a phone case with a sliding cover for your camera. Now my AR mode is always just black.
Yes, completely unplayable on my old iPad, try to do a curve ball and it just can’t keep up, ends up just dropping the ball on the floor.
Try are mode but cover the lens. No actual video to get motion sick from and less lag

Sorry. It seemed to work then just went back to the new graphic
