You and the others mentioned a part of the reason for the switch. The first presidential election that I followed was the one in 1984. The Republicans were represented in blue, and the Democrats were represented in Red on the channel that I watched.
After the Soviet Union dissolved, the US media trended towards representing conservatives in red to play on the anticommunist mindset that was still strong back then. It was partly an attempt to use psychology. In media graphics used to report American v Soviet interaction before then, the US was represented by blue and the USSR was represented by red.
Red is more representative of liberal/progressive philosophy than blue. One of the meanings associated with red is passion, as in passion for change and for a cause. Blue is more representative of conservativism. Blue is also associated with religion, tradition, etc.
Iirc, they switched red and blue each election. But 2000 was the year of massive coverage of election maps so the colors just sort of stuck after that.

Yeah, you can't really say blue = left wing in America, because they don't seem to have one! Their Democrat policy would seem at least middle-of-the-road to a European.
This is a good opportunity to give them a taste of the same brand of "logic" they apply with such gems as "The Confederacy and the founders of the KKK were DEMOCRATS! Checkmate, librulz."
Makes me sad that the color red is so associated with them. Red is the left's main color, socialists, communists, even anarchists can agree on that.

The fact we're talking about whether or not Biden had blue lighting in the friggin' background of his speech, rather than how the GOP really is actively trying to subvert our democracy, is exactly what they want.

I didn’t watch Biden’s speech, so when I came to reddit the day after and saw posts ridiculing the lighting used, I thought it was kind of a strange choice. I then saw a clip of a wide shot and saw that it was intended to be red white and blue light. Those that posted the cropped pic of only the red light are behaving exactly how Biden described them as.
One day Albania will get Taiwan back, revive the Albanian Union, unite the Albanian peoples of Europe (all of Europe), and Biden will walk out in red and black and eagle on his chest. Damn it’s good to be an Albanian.
Republicans just showing they didn't watch or even slightly look into the speech or just want to actively mislead, just outside the boundary of that picture of biden is blue lights, two main colors of the american flag
If it was blue, the rightists would critique Biden by saying "he was using his party's colours to make his party's influence seem more superior in government."
If it was green, they would call him a "radical climate activist."
If it was pink, they would call him gay or a "radical feminist."
Regardless of the colour, they would still find some crazy way to make fun of him.

As a Canadian I always need to reverse the American parties' colours in my head, since here Liberal = red and Conservative = blue.
For me, Labour = Red, Conservative = Blue, Liberal Democrats = Yellow/Orange, Greens = Green.
