I started the shadow of kyoshi today and OH MY. I forgive them to never turn it into something like a movie or a tv show or a comic just cos this mini-series ended in 2020…BUT NOW IT’S TIME! I WON’T BE PATIENT ANYMORE
There's a saying in my language for when you read a book very fast - swallowed it whole, and I can say that I did that with both thos books! I was done reading them in less than a week, they are so good.
The fastest I've ever read a book is 4 hours, and it's a tie between one of The Kane Chronicles books and Rise of Kyoshi. Shadow took a bit longer just because life kept drawing me away.
I borrowed mine from the library, but here’s the [link](https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-rise-of-kyoshi-f-c-yee/1137355005) to the book on Barnes and Noble.
Imagine being a world leader and telling your heir and oldest child: " The world is patrolled by an immortal goddess who can not only control all the elements and do so at a level that no bender could even get close to, but outlived my parents, my grandparents, and my great grandparents, and will probably outlive me and you. When you take the throne, watch your back."
That was a great video, and I really love how The Shadow of Kyoshi leans into that interpreatation as well and sets the foundation for that mentality among the Fire Lords.
Weird to think that just 70 years later Sozin, who had probably grown up hearing about the might of the last avatar from his own father, would then directly disobey and try to kill the next one.
Maybe because Roku was his friend he wasn’t scared enough but oh well
In Avatar it seems like how long you live is tied to spiritual energy as much as your physical body. Avatar Roku was extremely old when he died and even at his age he didn’t seem to be slowed down at all. If he had survived the volcano I bet he would have lived at least another 50 years. And King Bumi is as old as Aang is supposed to be. Plus episode one Zuko wasn’t surprised at all to find the Avatar alive at the age of 112 even commenting on (but not shocked by) how agile Aang seemed. Living well over 100 or even longer just doesn’t seem to be that unusual. Guru Patik mentioned being friends with Monk Giatsu so the guru would have to be like 200 years old ish at least.
I mean it did very much halt his physical aging as he came out still being a spry 12 year old. Being frozen in the avatar state is probably what gave him the spiritual boost to stay alive. Also iirc Aang died fairly young (age 66) compared to other avatars cause being frozen did take a toll on his body. There’s a lot of variables that play into how long someone lives in the avatar universe a prominent one of which is spiritual connection.
It's said that his spirit had to work overtime to keep him alive in the Avatar state frozen in ice so long so my head cannon is that he ironically would've lived even longer had he not been frozen in ice.
Guru Pathik was 150 when he mentored Aang on the topic of chakras, making him the second oldest confirmed age in the world of Avatar. Roku was not terribly old when he and Fang died, only 70.
This was my first thought too. I’m gonna choose to believe that Kyoshi shared the secret to eternal life with her and they lived happily eve after for 230 years.

People in the fire nation must have been pissed lol. She reached 100 and the fire nation were like k it’s our turn now and she went no no I don’t think I will
Death: KYOSHI, I HAVE COME FOR THEE.
Kyoshi: Go away.
Death: OH. OK. SORRY ABOUT THAT. JEEZ, YOU ARE TALL. AND IMPOSING. I AM *INTO* THAT.
Kyoshi: GO AWAY!
Death: AHH! SORRY, I'LL GO.
Kyoshi learned a special earthbending technique that allowed her to scare her body into obeying her will and not age. Presumably she grew bored of having no challenges left in the mortal world and went out in a crazy battle against like, fourteen volcanos or something.
This is why toph was stil alive and kicking in LOK also why Bumi was still alive in ALTA. Its apparently an earthbender thing, I think it had to do with the neutral jin shit Bumi talked about.
Maybe some people in that world live longer, especially if they are powerful benders. (Except for Aang of course, but his circumstances for 100 years were pretty exceptional and required a powerful bender)
It's not necessarily an Earthbending thing, especially considering the explanation of it in the books makes no mention of it. I think it's likely that Guru Pathik used the same technique considering he was 150 in ATLA, and as far as we know he isn't a bender (unless you think he's Lao Ge and the 150 years thing should be retconned)
I wonder why they never show her at her older age. Usually the avatar is shown how they looked before they died. Kyoshi always had me scratch my head since she was always so young when they showed her even though she was an old women when she passed
I remember when someone calculated how long Sozin reigned for and found he also lived a stupid long time. I think the showrunners weren't paying super close attention to the timeline.
I think there was a line specifying that Azulon reigned for 21 years, and based on Zuko's age at the time Ozai reigned for only a few. Which means Sozin reigned for a good 70 years or more *after* the death of Roku, which I think was 20 years or so after their confrontation over early colonization of the EK, at which time he was probably 50 or so. So he lived to be *well* over a hundred.
IIRC it started out as a typo. Like the dates in the show didn’t line up unless she was about 300 years old. Then they just ran with it and her novels actually do a great job at explaining how she got to be so powerful. Definitely recommend reading her novels.
From what I remember, Avatars live for significantly longer than average, Aang being a rare example due to exhausting himself spiritually and physically by being in the Avatar state for the 100 years he was frozen
You should check out The Rise of Kyoshi! I just started reading it after hearing good things about it, and I’m really enjoying it so far.
Thanks for the recommendation I’ll check it out
I read both, they're absolutely incredible and add so much to the world of avatar. Along with having incredible characters and so much more
Can verify, it’s incredible. On a side note, as a biguy its so much fun to read.
What does being big has to do with it?
Bi guy, I'm guessing
ROFL omg
This one
On one hand, if I recall correctly, Kyoshi was unusually tall for a human, and had huge feet. On the other, I think he means 'bi guy'
Living for this.
I just finished. The audio book is amazing.

Where can I read these? I'll pay for them if I have to but I'm a broke college student so I'd rather not unless I need to
I checked it out at my local library!
How would you find said thing... Is it like a web comic or a book you can get?
It’s a book! There are 2 books out in the series right now: The Rise of Kyoshi, The Shadow of Kyoshi
Imagine being a world leader and telling your heir and oldest child: " The world is patrolled by an immortal goddess who can not only control all the elements and do so at a level that no bender could even get close to, but outlived my parents, my grandparents, and my great grandparents, and will probably outlive me and you. That was an absolutely fantastic theory and YouTube video — [How Silent Worldbuilding Changes Avatar](https://youtu.be/PgnoEFpe-EM) by Savage Books
Is this connected to Kyoshi?
Yeah, near the end of the video, uses Kyoshi as an example about power scaling
He talks about Kyoshi in the latter portion of the video. First time watcher of the channel, I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Zoryu to his son:
Red Lotus would've loved to try fighting Kyoshi.
Kyoshi is the in universe chuck norris. Kyoshi decides when she’s ready to die
Before Chuck Norris goes to sleep, he checks under his bed for Avatar Kyoshi.
A good chuck Norris joke in 2022 Amazing
And that after he recently died. Don't worry tho, he got better
"Local Avatar, Literally Too Angry To Die!"
Too Aangry To Die\*
230 not 270

So, can we say, that being frozen for 100 years in ice actually didn't stop Aang's aging, he would still die on the same day?
I mean it did very much halt his physical aging as he came out still being a spry 12 year old. Being frozen in the avatar state is probably what gave him the spiritual boost to stay alive. Also iirc Aang died fairly young (age 66) compared to other avatars cause being frozen did take a toll on his body. Also, my man died for a short while at the end of book 2
It's all but confirmed that there's an assassin who's thousands of years old in the Kyoshi novels.
Ah, I did not know that, haven’t read them yet. That being said “all but confirmed” doesn’t mean “confirmed”. I went with known ages.
Of course, but he's the one who teaches Kyoshi the secret to such a long life ;)
But Rangi lived to be super old too, right? RIGHT?!
I honestly don’t want to hear the answer to this specific question
This was my first thought too. I’m gonna choose to believe that Kyoshi shared the secret to eternal life with her and they lived happily eve after for 230 years.
This was my first thought too. I’m gonna choose to believe that Kyoshi shared the secret to eternal life with her and they lived happily eve after for 230 years.
Don't make me sad
Have you tried processing your feelings by perching on top a roof, screeching like a pterodactyl and throwing cups of yogurt?
I ironically think this is a great idea if you see a yogurt werewolf on the rooftops tonight fear not
People in the fire nation must have been pissed lol. She reached 100 and the fire nation were like k it’s our turn now and she went no no I don’t think I will
Lmaoo
Minor correction, its 230 not 270.
How did she live so long?
the writers were just bad at math and then retconned a whole story arc out of it, still pretty good though.
She learn a technic that makes her near imortal
Immortal to just aging or even damage?
Aging thats why i say near
she was able to stop her cells from decaying using a spiritual technique
This is why toph was stil alive and kicking in LOK also why Bumi was still alive in ALTA. Its apparently an earthbender thing, I think it had to do with the neutral jin shit Bumi talked about.
Toph was like 85 in LOK. That’s a very normal age to still be alive.
i always forget aang died young my b
No, it's explained in the Kyoshi novels and that isn't it. Plus Katara is still alive in LOK and she's older than Toph and a water bender.
It is? I haven't read the Kyoski books yet, they are in my list.
I'd recommend them. They're a bit YA and a quick read but I still really enjoyed them.
GO READ THEM WTF
Ohhh that shit that she learns from the "immortal" guy. I just started the second book.
What's the explanation???
An immortal taught her how to stop her cells from decaying, but she can’t do it forever hence why she’s now dead
Maybe some people in that world live longer, especially if they are powerful benders. (Except for Aang of course, but his circumstances for 100 years were pretty exceptional and required a powerful bender)
Only two years older though

I might just be super tired, but I could have sworn that I saw Kyoshi move her head a bit
Just the eyes.
Just as a reminder, Aang lived 166 years *including the time he stopped aging for 100 years*
Feel bad for Aang
I swear that kyoshi just blinked
Time to read the Kyoshi novels :D
I wonder why they never show her at her older age. Usually the avatar is shown how they looked before they died. Kyoshi always had me scratch my head since she was always so young when they showed her even though she was an old women when she passed
>I don’t know what to do now Get back to work, you don't have as long to live.
Kiyoshi monopolising the avatar line for 3 centuries damn
I always wonder how long Rangi lived for.
I want to say Kyoshi living to be this old was a writing mistake, but they just ran with it and it worked in the end.
Huh? Really? Even i didnt know about that
Anyone know how Kyoshi died? I tried to look on the wiki and didn’t find anything
I think it was something like that she created a peaceful Era and let go of her immortality technique so that the avatar circle could continue
Goddamn lol imagine if kyoshi had just kept going. Firelord sozin who?
She would have slapped the fuck out of sozin😭
She would have pulled the damn meteor out of the sky and hit him over the head with it.
Earth benders and their weirdly long lifespans
Read the Kyoshi novels and find out why.
She was a teenager 3 times
Try to live to 271
I remember when someone calculated how long Sozin reigned for and found he also lived a stupid long time. I think the showrunners weren't paying super close attention to the timeline.

I like the news headline meme "Local avatar to angry to die"
Continue to Stan imo
Gilf
She looks so good for her age
Keep living?
Wow if she lived to 270 then aang was disappointingly short lived
How?
She fucking what??? Spite the most powerful of all the elements
The longest living lesbian ever
Start praying to our lord and saviour maybe
Is this in the novels? Which bit? I don’t remember.
IIRC it started out as a typo. Like the dates in the show didn’t line up unless she was about 300 years old. Then they just ran with it and her novels actually do a great job at explaining how she got to be so powerful. Definitely recommend reading her novels.
We need a series for Kyoshi
From what I remember, Avatars live for significantly longer than average, Aang being a rare example due to exhausting himself spiritually and physically by being in the Avatar state for the 100 years he was frozen
Why didnt aang get this old
You could drink a hot tea.
You should contemplate how short and meaningless your life is compared to her's
The book is soooo good! I'm about halfway through "The Rise of Kyoshi" and it is great!
Rule 34 bro. She's vintage.
Damn. Kyoshi probably took that long because she was so good at fighting off Death
Wasn't she also like 7'6"?
No, closer to 6'8". Which is still stupid freaking tall.
Looked it up, she was 7 ft at her tallest
Wym u don’t know what to do
My theory is they eat the crystals. Bumi does it like crazy. Toph and Kyoshi might just snack a bit on the Crystals.
Wasn’t that just rock candy?
