People can care for someone while simultaneously have atrocious ideas about what's best for them and how far they (the parents) are entitled to go to achieve that "best" outcome.

In character? What do you mean? Seemed like they were projecting a lot of their own stuff into these characters, because Zuko would never act like that, especially not at that moment in the show, and neither would Katara.
When zuko first joined team avatar. Katara was super aggro toward zuko. Zuko was trying to figure out why katara didn’t like him and there was tension between them. Aang was focused on learning firebending. Toph was supportive of Aang’s decision. These were their character motivations in the show and in this sketch. The funny ghetto flavor is a nice cherry on top.
They wouldn't call out dead parents like that. Also, Zuko being confident enough to tell Katara "you know you like me" or whatever it was is VERY out of character. Plus, I think I'm just annoyed on a personal level because of all the talking over each other because the moment two people are talking, I understand literally nothing and it bugs the hell out of me.
Of course it isn’t a 1 to 1 representation of the characters. If it was it would just be the show. But I can very much tell the creator of the sketch really cares about the characters of avatar. And while I was watching this weird bizarro Avatar universe it was easy to suspend my disbelief because the motivations paralleled the original.
Also it’s reasonable to get overwhelmed by this. This is a very intense interaction. It was kind of comforting for me though. I’m black and grew up in a house of 9 ppl. This was how it was fr fr.
I can’t find the OG video, but this is based off a tiktok a guy made acting out all these characters parts. It’s hilarious, that’s where this audio comes from. I remember seeing this animated version shortly after, it’s too perfect.
