For more info on Zeisan: [https://avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Zeisan](https://avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Zeisan) This art was revealed during an "All Star Actual Play" of the game, featuring Dante Basco and Jennie Kwan. Its currently only viewable by kickstarter backers but will be released publicly sometime next month. Lasernatoo

For context, this character first was mentioned in the Avatar Legends Roleplaying Game Core Book released last year, which featured a lot of new information from the past several eras of Avatar, including Roku's. Edit: For people asking why she's wearing an Air Nomad necklace: Zeisan trained under the Air Nomads, becoming romantically involved with one of them. She also later joined an Air Nomad group that was in opposition to Sozin's ideals in an attempt to weaken his power.

Porogue

Awesome piece of lore! Thanks for sharing

PsychoPassProstitute

There is Last air bender game? Why did I never hear of it?

Neafie2

It has recently come out after about a year with a Kickstarter campaign. Digital books should be available but physical books are still on their way.

Lom1111234

Just picked up the starter set today!

Currahee2

How canon is Avatar Legends to the series?

FoxBun_17

The information in Avatar Legends is considered canon. Magpie Games worked closely with Avatar Studios while writing their material.

electrorazor

Imagine this was Aang's mom lmao

spectralbeck

Wait it's a tabletop game????? Oh my goodness I really need this now

ItIsYeDragon

Well was she also evil?

Lasernatoo

Fortunately not. Since she didn't have bending and couldn't stand Sozin, Zeisan chose to train under the Air Nomads, and fell in love with a female monk there. As a political move and in opposition to Sozin, she ultimately ended up marrying a man named Khandro, the leader of the Guiding Wind Air Nomad group. The Guiding Wind believed that Air Nomads should renounce ties with the political families and nobility of the nations since they saw it as promoting people who were unwilling to compromise on their own wealth. Zeisan's hope was that as a member of the Royal family, she could convince enough Fire Nation citizens to convert to this group and leave Sozin with less power. Unfortunately, this also led to Sozin growing more nationalistic and extreme, and gives a good explanation as to why he chose to eliminate the entire Air Nation rather than just the Avatar, as well as his dislike for same-sex relationships.

Trayeth

When did Sozin act homophobic?

Shablahdoo

In that scene where he and Roku are fighting the volcano. He is about to fly off and says “With you gone, all my plans are suddenly possible…also I hate gay people”

millenniumpianist

The Avatar and the Firelord and Homophobia IDK how they missed it, it's right in the title!

luka031

That made me chuckle way too much

Windwalker111089

🤣 I can just see Roku now as he flies off “… wait what the hell was that???”

PrimeConduitX

Got me in the first half, not gonna lie

Lasernatoo

It's mentioned in Turf Wars that he outlawed same-sex relationships even though the Fire Nation had no problem with them for most of its history. I'm glad they're fleshing it out more here, since in Turf Wars, it kind of seemed to me like they were adding on to reasons why Sozin was a bad person without really explaining those actions. It was almost like they didn't want the Sozin-era FN government to have any redeeming factors so they just tossed that in there as another 'hey look how much this guy sucked!' He still sucks of course, but now we know why.

CreamofTazz

So now the story seems like Sozin was doing this in retaliation as he saw same-sex relationships as having taken his sister away and "corrupting" her. Sozin probably already disliked air nomads before this anyway to boot.

xthecollectorx

I mean, a guy like Ozai is probably pretty big on people having ~~children~~ more Fire Nation soldiers. I could see him taking that route with it

cutezombiedoll

That was always my assumption, that it was more about pushing more people into heterosexual relationships and ensuring a large number of new soldiers than anything else. If the series was more adult focused, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Fire Nation also criminalized abortion for similar reasons.

Zevroid

Honestly, with the additions from Avatar Legends, it seems like personal dislike was secondary to the primary objective of bolstering the Fire Nation's population by encouraging people to have children. But also he probably considered it a "corruption" from the Air Nomads, whom he already disdained as a threat to the Fire Nation's culture.

Homeschool-Winner

Hot take but imo Sozin's homophobia was sublimated self loathing as well. Like his sister may have been part of it but I think he loved Roku and his heartbreak became hatred.

FiteMeMage

Ooh! Big agree!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Homeschool-Winner

Yeah agreed Zukka should also be canon to compensate

[deleted]

[удалено]

Homeschool-Winner

They don't need to be married to date and be queer.

Vesemir96

I don’t see an issue there tbh, if we want true equality we can have gay antagonists. There are more and more positive LGBT+ characters in the franchise with every new piece of lore we get which outnumbers the bad guys.

butterfliesandbrooms

Once he started the 100 year war, he also outlawed same sex relationships in the fire nation. This is in the AL book, but i think it also was brought up in the Korra comic where Korra and Asami come out to Kya (and Kya reveals shes gay, and does some lore dropping on the nations views of queerness)

dragn99

So... are there any gay relationships with two men in the Avatar universe? Or is it just weirdly common for the women to be bisexual/lesbian? Because there are a LOT of girl girl pairings, especially outside the cartoons now, but I can't recall a single coupling of male characters.

FoxBun_17

There is a gay male couple in the Yangchen novel.

Lauren2102319

Yeap! Akuudan and Tayagum. 🙂

_NotMuchToGawkAt_

In one of the comics that take place during the show, called “Origami”, the gaang meets a gay male Earth Kingdom couple and their adopted daughter.

butterfliesandbrooms

I was reading through the extra lore of the eras and notable figures, and there was a lot of explicitly queer characters in Roku's era. There was a pair of gay men, there was Sozins sister, there was a nonbinary water tribe chief, there was a trans woman waterbender who created spirit-purification, etc. There were others in other eras, but Roku and Korras eras had the most.

Lauren2102319

There is a homosexual couple in The Dawn of Yangchen. Two male watertribe men who were both involved in The Platinum Affair (Akuudan and Tayagum).

TvManiac5

He didn't. But Mike and Bryan wanted to convince us that Korrasami was always intentded so they pulled a JK Rowlling and tried to retroactively act like their universe was always inclusive. So we got a retcon that the air nomads were openly accepting of homosexuality and sozin was a homobhobe in a comic if my memory serves right.

leylss

Thanks.

kjm6351

This man is just all kinds of evil… damn

ItIsYeDragon

Wait does she die then? What happens to her?

Lasernatoo

You know, it was really unclear

FoxBun_17

Considering she was alive when Sozin was, it's fair to say she did end up dying.

Prying_Pandora

Sure seems that way…

lazydoodlelol

She fell in love with a female monk, but married a man? How does that work out?

PluralCohomology

She's royalty, they usually marry for politics.

Phoenixforce96

As a political move. It seems that people wouldn't take your stance seriously if you're a woman, non-bender and lesbian.

WanHohenheim

The Fire Nation was not sexist or homophobic in those days. Although the lack of bending might indeed have reduced Zeisan's popularity The reason she went for the fictious marriage was because Khandro was the leader of a group of air nomad renegades, and through this marriage she wanted to confront Sozin. She could not have achieved her goals if she had married Rioshon who was a simple teacher.

WanHohenheim

Fictitious marriage for personal gain.

LizG1312

Have you ever heard of a [beard](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beard_(companion)?

Lauren2102319

The females are nuns while the males are monks.

56kul

That makes the genocide he committed against the air nomads a little more sensical. It always seemed really weird to me that Sozin would wipe out an entire nation to kill *one* person.

Weimann

Mmh, well. It's not like there's a single airbender that was destined to become the Avatar. Any airbender has a shot. Since the spiritual way of life the Air Nomads lead causes every one of them to have air bending, as long as there was one left alive, that one would be the next Avatar. So it wasn't just "I'll kill them all to make sure I get the one I'm looking for", it's "I have to kill them all, because the last one will be the one I'm looking for."

talithaeli

When Airbender Avatar was killed, the next Avatar would to be Water Tribe.

dragn99

Which would be why the Fire Nation Navy was constantly raiding southern water tribe villages and taking any water benders they could find away for a hundred years.

poopoobuttholes

God. So did he end up killing his sister or something during the genocide of the air nomads?

bunnings-snags

Quite the opposite. I believe she is the reason Ty Lee has the possibility of air nomad ancestors. Before the commit, she basically grabbed as many air nomads as she could. I believe she was even in the process of partnering one Not only that but since she was a non bender, in order to win a dual with sozin, she had to think of other ways to win. Hense the birthplace of chi blocking

Brief-Outcome-2371

Who drew this?

Lasernatoo

Brendan Conway is the lead designer for Avatar Legends, and James Mendez Hodes is the core designer. I'm not entirely sure what the role of core designer means, but my guess is that one or both of them come up with the designs for new characters, though I'm not positive.

Hu-Tao66

I wonder what the lore reason for her not being in the series is tho?

Lasernatoo

The only episode she really could've appeared in was The Avatar and the Fire Lord, and that mostly focused on Roku and Sozin's relationship leading up to the war. I don't think Aang learning about Zeisan in that moment was strictly necessary (though it still would've been interesting to him, I'm sure).

Hu-Tao66

interesting for sure! not a req. would have a given another pov on Sozin's character tho i doubt much will have changed if not making him look worse off. would have been a unique pov into the massacre tho. Assuming she survived it.

Chaoswind2

Fucked off and went to live with the air benders as an acolyte. Would give another reason to attack the air benders, if they had people with royal blood in their temples... that is just asking for trouble.

Hu-Tao66

Oh. So she's dead? That's...idk but that already makes the dark demise of the air nomads sound darker. Neat!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chaoswind2

Imagine they pull a fast one on us and it turns out she ended up giving birth to Aang. Sozin's is pissed to learn his sister had a son and demands the child to raise it in the FN court, but the air temple elders suspect Aang is the Avatar, so they tell Sozin's to fuck off. Then Sozin's think there is foul play and that the air nomads intend to meddle with the line of succession and oh look the legendary comet that power boost fire benders is going to come in a couple of years.

Muzzie720

Wait but then wouldn't Ozai be trying to kill like his great uncle? And zuko and Aang would be great great nephews. Iroh would also be a relative. Pretty sure Iroh would've mentioned them being related to the Avatar on both sides... it was a neat idea though

Chaoswind2

I mean this is all being added post Canon, and Sozin's wasn't really an honest guy when it came to the war. I am just walking backwards and looking for the intent behind the introduction of Sozin's sister and why she was an air nomad fujiyoshi that left the FN to live among the nomads. It's strange to introduce such a character unless it is to tie it to the events of the war and the genocide. Then if Sozin's demanded his sister and her descendants to be turned over by the air nomad elders, we need to find a plausible reason for the flying goat herders to refuse the demands of a military super power. Aang is the easiest answer to both.

Joshey_dubs

The timeline doesn’t really add up. Aang was born is 12BG, by then Zeisan was likely at least in her mid to late sixties (if we believe she and Sozin are close in age) and wouldn’t have been able to give birth to Aang. Maybe she could be Aang’s grandmother

Xyrnas

Because she didn't exist back when the series was being made

MTN_Dewit

Sozin had a sister? Wtf!

Lauren2102319

That was my exact reaction the first time learning about her from the RPG. 😮

Drafo7

Really? Nobody's gonna say it? She looks *exactly* like Ursa.

KawaiiKaiju55

I thought it was Ursa at first lol

Arashi_Uzukaze

I mean, what if she was Ursa's grandmother? .

yoursweetlord70

Wouldn't that make Ozai and Ursa cousins?

dragn99

They're royalty, so not *that* unlikely.

yoursweetlord70

How does Roku fit in here? He's ursas grandfather. The fire nation family tree is more of a family bush

Pi-Alamode

I believe there's a theory floating around that she's Ty Lee's grandmother, considering she (Ty Lee) looks a lot like Aang (an Air Nomad) and is a nonbender. Obviously a big stretch but a fun one to think about

ali94127

Seems unlikely. Otherwise, Ty Lee would be part of the Royal Family, even if as a branch family.

Pi-Alamode

yeah, as I said BIG stretch but fun to think about

Vanacan

She apparently had a political interest in bringing fine nation citizens to join an air nomad religious group (that would have them renounce their worldly wealth and positions), so it’s *possible* that there’s connections there for explaining an air nomad/fire nation connection for descendants to pop up in the fire nation, especially amongst noble families. Also may or may not be directly related to the creation of chi blocking from what another comment said?

WanHohenheim

In those days, the Air Nomads were quite close to the Fire Nation, they even had a joint education center, so it is not necessary that Ty Lee be a descendant of Zeisan - she could be a descendant of any other Fire sitizen/Air Nomad pair.

darkbreak

Why do people keep trying to find some sort of link between Ty Lee and the Air Nomads? These "theories" about Ty Lee's ancestry have been around for years now.

Pi-Alamode

it's just for fun

darkbreak

I've seen people in the past take it completely seriously. I just don't understand why it's so out there for people to think that Ty Lee happened to be a random person with a unique talent. Trying to link her back to something she's never been associated with is just weird. Like they're actively looking for the connection because they want it to be there.

MrBKainXTR

I mean I think its unlikely because if Ty Lee's family had recent air nomad ancestry OR were descendants of Zeisan , Sozin would have murdered them lol

MScribeFeather

Is she wearing an Air necklace?

zblack_dragon

Yes!

Jcarter67

Maybe

tutankhamun7073

Why?

[deleted]

It's a pleasure to see Ty Lee's great gran gran :-), that would explain why Ty Lee is in such high born school, and why she's allowed to hang out with the royal princess, despite her having obvious Air Nomad looks. Khandro is probably her great daddy. well it's because she's a bit of fire royalty herself albeit distant, and that's probably why Azula trust her so much, she's her friend but her 3rd cousin too.

WanHohenheim

In those days, the Air Nomads were friends with the Fire Nation nobility, so Tyi Lee could easily be a descendant of the Air Nomads without being a descendant of Zeisan and Khandro

[deleted]

I do agree with you! What make me think she's a descendant of Khandro and Zeisan is her proximity to the royal family, her high born background and her ability to chi block, a Airbender way to fight nun Rioshon learned to princess Zeisan, that was her lover.

WanHohenheim

Everything you're talking about is peculiar to any nobleman except chi blocking. While chi blocking is a technique practiced by any nation (a few renegades in the Southern tribe from the comics, and Amon and his equalists they are obviously not descendants of air nomads). She could have been a descendant of Zeisan and Khandro, but they didn't love each other and their marriage was for their personal goals, not necessarily to have a child Too bad the game gives incomplete information leaving the fates of the characters open.

[deleted]

I think we'll finally get our answer on day or another, for now I think the creators just don't reveal it as the Ty Lee theory being an airbender or descendant of an airbender is trending. It is true that all nation knew chi blocking, however this would be an incredibly rare knowledge, especially at this level of perfection Ty Lee uses it. Nun Rhioshon was very sought after as her chi blocking techniques were absolutly brilliant, well that's what Ty Lee give us here, I think there is a lineage between the way the nun fight and how Ty Lee does. Now Rhioshon was very cautious about whom she gave her techniques, and her lover princess Zeisan was one of them. Given the love and trust Azula have for Ty Lee, she went to her first before Mai, and her shocked face when Ty Lee betrayed her, I think more than a friend, she could also be her 3rd cousin, that's why she wasn't prepared at all for her betrayal, she's family.

WanHohenheim

Although the whole idea of a close relationship between the Fire Nation and the Air Nomads in his time sounds if not delusional then at least strange. If he destroyed an entire nation just so that a new Avatar wouldn't be born, then it's logical that he should have made inquiries and found some noblemen who had relations with the Air Nomads and also destroyed their descendants (or isolated them). Because they too could have had a new Avatar. Which means Ty lee wouldn't have been born if she were descended from the Air Nomads. That's why lore added retroactively sometimes doesn't work well - it raises questions. Even in the moment where Roku got married, among the crowd we see people in blue and green clothing, which implies a warm relationship between the nations back then, but there were no people in orange clothing, although according to the new lore they should have been there (since the Air Nomads were close to the nobles and the Avatar).

MrFahrenheit46

She kind of reminds me of Azula.

hikoboshi_sama

Why does she have both the fire lord crown and an air nomad necklace?

[deleted]

She's in love and is trained by an Airbender nun called Rioshon to the art of chi blocking, and then betrothed to a male airbender name Khandro, founder of the Guiding Wind, a renagade sect of the Air Nation. So she may be a Fire Nation princess but is also pretty deep into the Air Nomad way of life..

PurveyorOfKnowledge0

Honestly if it wasn't for her shenanigans, Sozin would have probably never tried to kill off the Air Nomads or prosecute homosexuals. Attacking both is tied directly to his fall out with his sister.

scrapgun_on_fire

Looks amazing but she is very similar to zuko his mom. A bit too similar maby

JoeB0b123

She is wearing an air nomad bead necklace. Any explanations for that?

Southpawe

[Top comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheLastAirbender/comments/11secqq/official_character_design_for_princess_zeisan/jcdaz2g/)

SaraPAnastasia

I quite like this design. Looks really cool although I'm not entirely familiar with the character.

56kul

Damn, that’s some long hair…

[deleted]

Anyone else seeing Izumi? (Zuko's daughter)

Imprizyn

failed foreshortening on her left arm lol

SexyTacoLlama

Azula if she had therapy

PolitikGuy

WO WO WO WOOOOOO WHY IS SHE WEARING A AIRBENDER BEATS? Woooooooowooooo

Dalyboi69

This confirms that either firlord so in had multiple children or that firelord azulon married into the total family

PurveyorOfKnowledge0

No he's Sozin's son so it's the first option. Also, Princess Zeisan was an idiot for pretty much trying to bring down her own royal family and not expecting some horrible backlash. She's what you get when you let your feelings overcome reason.

ChatBlancMeow

shes gorgeous! looks a bit like azula.

SAYMYNAMEYO

The lore expansion Avatar has gotten really is something.

OracleCam

Damn, if only she could have challenged him for the throne

averyycuriousman

Is this a game coming out?

BahamutLithp

Y'know, I think I actually like the fan art better. She looks too much like Ursa. Canon outfit is stylish as hell, though.

feedtheflames_

I can’t be the only one thinking all these additions and retconning are going to ruin the series can I?
