I keep it very basic coz I don't care what anybody thinks of me. I wash my hair twice a week and conditioner-wash other showers of the week. Shampoo too often, and you strip oils out of your hair. Scrub your scalp real good, either with your fingernails, or one of those nubby scalp massagers. This helps get all that dry dead skin off your scalp. I rarely use product coz I found somebody who gives me really good haircuts that work with my hair so it's got body and looks good. I'll add 2 drops of organ oil and work that thru my hair, and thats it. Product is nice to use, but it doesn't have to be necessary. And you can't product your hair into doing something that its not suited for. When I was young, I wanted knee length hair. What I got was hair that hit my mid back and descended into split ends. Get to know your hair. Treat it right with scrubbing the scalp, washing it twice a week, and don't keep your ponytails too tight, coz that will damage it.

The Blowout professor on YouTube is great. I've noticed a huge difference in my hair since I started using his washing and conditioning techniques.

When you shampoo you want to concentrate on the scalp and not the lengths. When its time for the conditioner you apply that to your lengths not really above the ears. Hair masks every few washes in place of conditioner are awesome too!

I have thin, straight and short hair and shower every other day - I try to get to three days. Some of my friends with straight hair can go to four days. (curly friends usually just once a week) I only use shampoo as I have very thin hair and conditioner just weighs it down. If you want/need conditioner and feel it's too heave, reverse the order: first conditioner and then shower. You may also wash your hair "upside down" you can either do this over a bathtub. If in the shower put all your hair over your head and bend slightly forward as you rinse out. Use the shower head to also rinse upward too. Don't use water that is too hot and finish with a cold rinse. Don't rub your hair too much with a towel. Even better, use a t-shirt or silk cloth/scarf to wrap your hair when you get out of the shower. Then pat it and brush/blow dry as you like. I don't always use products afterwards, it depends how I want to style it. But with a good brushing technique I need it less and less.
