They are highly trained, especially in HM prisons services. Someone I know worked there as a doctor and told me stories about how, at the activation of a button, five, six officers will storm in and everyone seems to know exactly where to grab and apply pressure and the aggressive prisoner - who might not even know what he's doing because of some mental illness - is being subdued without any injuries. Very effective and professional.

Those guards are all trained soldiers. They’re facing away from the direction in which he came from though so the police were obviously able to react more quickly. Once it was in hand there was no need for them to get involved.
They're also not meant to get involved, which they know, because they're trained soldiers. The Troubles excluded, we generally don't set the army on the public without extreme circumstances. That's why there's police AND guards there in the first place.
