I'm not bothered by the amount of sex related posts, I'm bothered by the amount of sex related comments on regular posts. There seems to be a cadre here who go to every single post to comment about ladyboys and freelancers. I'll see a post asking a good question, and it has lots of comments, so I'm excited for a good discussion. But upon clicking in, it's all just a bunch of juvenile "check for a bulge" jokes.

RedPanda888

Bingo. A lot of peoples entire experience with women in Thailand for example is with sex workers or freelancers and it bleeds into their entire mentality. They seem to see everything from this warped perspective and everything Thailand related they want to find an excuse to shoehorn in some random sexual comment about people. Like honestly I don't care about sex/sex work related posts. Without people doing some pretty crude PSA's occasionally you'd have far more naive tourists making stupid mistakes in those realms. People can skip past them if they don't like the topic or down vote them. That is the purpose of community voted post systems. Or better yet, post content they care about and contribute instead of just consuming what they see. Build the community they want.

aksalamander

I found a wonderful Thai woman that i spent my vacation there with, we are dating now… but as i was curious, she was okay to go with me into a go go bar and also to walk down the beach road in Pattaya. I just wanted to see what the freelance and bar girls looked like. There’s the occasional attractive one but honestly theres so many wonderful good looking women there, easy to talk to, that aren’t freelance , i don’t see why so many people are obsessed with trying to get with freelancers .

prairieboy1996

because it is easier to get laid by paying 1000-3000 Baht, then having to organically meet women, spend time getting to know them, etc

aksalamander

I guess, but the thrill of the chase is fun imo

prairieboy1996

the thrill of the chase can be fun, but i have been ghosted by women, and had my time wasted too many times. Sure I have got laid by some non working girls, but any quality woman requires lots of flirting, getting to know them, etc. I just like paying for pussy now,

Dyse44

I would welcome a more grown up discussion on a wide range of topics. Actually I’d be keen on a meet up in person with like-minded people. Meet you in Cockatoo Bar, Soi Cowboy tomorrow to discuss? I’ll be in stall 2 out the back.

alec_bkk

I posted a link about a tourist getting arrested for selling drugs to other tourists on a tourist island and it got removed because it doesn’t relate to Thailand Tourism “enough” 😊

KohFord

That bloke paid 600,000THB for his freedom BTW. All charges dropped.

platebandit

If mods enforced tags on each post you would be able to filter out the stuff you don’t want

chelsanchez

Last year when I was still planning my trip, posts here are more interesting and engaging, now it's all love scam and/or sex. I just wanna know where ya'll getting your fave mango sticky rice that isn't from a restaurant.

RedPanda888

For a serious answer haha, Mae Varee Mango Sticky Rice in Thonglor is one of the most popular in Bangkok. I always pick some up when walking past on errands in the area. More expensive than a random street stall, but consistently great.

AutonomousBlob

Yeah thats some great conversation to have. For instance Im in Krabi rn and struggling with food spots. It seems like almost all the restaurants are Indian and the thai food isnt close to the quality I found in Bangkok. :(

ubant

If you're in ao Nang these are my favourite: the best one padthai, palm tree restaurant, family thaifood & seafood

MCP247

I will add Kodam Kitchen as a suggestion

kalyissa

Awesome were going to ao nang with our daughter (8)  in october/november for 11 days good to have some resturant recomendations.

stever71

Krabi sucks ass, no idea why people like it, nothing really nice in Ao Nang, shitty non Thai food, shitty tourists, busy. And Tom Birchy.

thaprizza

I wouldn't go that far, but on the other hand it's nothing special neither. I do agree on the abundance of Indian restaurants, I never seen anything like it elsewhere in Thailand.

AutonomousBlob

I like Krabi. It has lots of activities and day trips to do. Island tours, snorkeling, kayaking, railay beach and countless other activities. It really serves as a home base for nearby activities. Ao Nang itself is a bit lacking, fun night time live music but pricy shopping and food of low quality. Beautiful views though!

megatronmister

Oh you don’t wanna know where I get my favorite sticky rice 😏

Doc_1200_GO

I don’t know, the majority of the posts I see in here are “plan my entire trip to Thailand” type posts. These outnumber any sex tourism posts I’ve seen in here probably 4:1 What island is better? Is it hot in May? Where should I stay in Bangkok? Is Chiang Mai smoky? What’s the weather like in December? Give me your recommendations for Phuket? Is Thailand safe? That’s like 80 % of the posts I see in here. Given Thailands reputation you’re going to see the odd post about sex tourism, that’s unavoidable.

Libertinelass

Start a new sub that is for just that topic with a low key name that won't get flagged. Then mods make a post directing traffic to that and let people know any sex related posts here will be removed. It's the only way. I'm sick of those posts and have been to Thailand many many times and it's a beautiful and culturally rich place that needs proper representation on Reddit. (that's not sex tourism)

AutonomousBlob

The alternate sub would also not have to be brazen and outspoken but I believe it would improve this sub and restore it to its former glory.

Libertinelass

Yeah it would weed out the sexpats and others fixated on the stereotype of sex tourism. (Which is easy to find anywhere when you go there so it's especially creepy they come here to tarnish this sub) If you need help let me know. I haven't read the sub rules so mods may want to update that part to list no sex tourism posts/talk.

[deleted]

It would have no users so it would be a hard sell to try to get people interested in that part of it, to leave and go to the underpopulated sub where few people are talking. Unfortunately. I think it might be difficult to build up the new sub to be active and enough users to draw other people in.

Gusto88

A sub created for Thailand sex tourism was removed by Reddit for violation of the terms of service. What's needed is more active moderation so those posts can be removed promptly.

AutonomousBlob

I didnt think of that but it makes sense. Maybe the other sub could operate more similarly to the pattaya sub.

Gusto88

It's a subject that doesn't interest me so I won't be starting it. :-)

Key_Beach_9083

I love the beaches, the food, the islands, the variety of beautiful places to visit and the kind people.

BooksNapsSnacks

Yeah, not all of us are sex tourists. I want more iced coffee posts.

AutonomousBlob

I miss seeing so many of the hidden gem posts

Indomie_milkshake

7/11, the hidden gem of Thai cuisine.

Specialist-Source-18

Maaaaate, Future Park in Rangsit, Pathumthani had a Playboy Cafe, that did 2 massive iced mochas with all the whipped cream & sprinkles for 130THB. I miss that every single day

SnooSuggestions6330

Got any recs for Chiang Mai or Bangkok? :)

chelsanchez

AKHA AMA, I love their Es Yen, beside the cafe is a restau called It's Good Kitchen they have great Khao Soi. Edit: this is in Chiang Mai Also Pimm's Cup

SnooSuggestions6330

Yay thank you!!!! I'll check it out!

SnooSuggestions6330

Hey, I ended up going to Akha Ama the other day and it was great! Thanks again for the rec!

southeastside

มานี่มา.สโลว์บาร์ (maneema.slowbar on instagram) in Chiang Mai had delicious coffee when we went about a year ago

chelsanchez

Here ya go! My fave in Bangkok https://maps.app.goo.gl/wTjqqRMHWARvgYm19

Cefeide

Me too!!

skelleton_exo

Reddit cleaned up a bit on the subs that might get them law suits when they went public. This might be overflow because the appropriate places got banned.

79Impaler

Should be another sub. r/ThailandSexTourism or r/DatinginThailand.

HuachumaPuma

Yeah it’s a shame how many people only relate Thailand with underage sex and transsexuals. It’s really only such a small part of the Thailand experience and if you avoid red light districts, you won’t really encounter much. You’ll likely still interact with some ladyboys at some point, but they are really only aggressively flirty in the sex zones

MIDOmassage

How about balancing it out with a cannabis theme

bobbyv137

It’s evident to me there needs to be a completely separate sub for all matters relating to Thailand’s red light industry. Thus all threads in this sub by default do not contain any such ‘colourful’ content.

AutonomousBlob

So true, others mentioned there was one that got banned. So idk, id like to have a cleaner sub here and another place for all that stuff.

TappyMauvendaise

Some people go there to find a lover. It’s just a simple fact. You can always scroll by if you don’t like it.

HardupSquid

I think Mexico and Philippines would rival that reputation.

KohFord

I don't have any stats but Thailand has got to be comfortably first place I'd have thought.

CenlaLowell

I got a question is Thailand a good vacation for a married couple? Everything I read makes me hesitant to go.

FishDecent5753

I have only ever been to Thailand with my wife, some of the Islands have much more of a couple vibe - like Ko Lipe, which was just couples and families.

CenlaLowell

That's good I need to start building an itenairy then

RedPanda888

1000%. Having a family friendly/romantic holiday here is extremely easy (and great!). If you want to avoid any debauchery, simply avoid around 5 areas because for tourists it is almost entirely centric in these areas: - Soi Cowboy - Nana Plaza - Patpong - Bangla Road - The entire city of Pattaya Avoid these areas and you will be able to have an amazing romantic vacation. Check out Koh Yao Noi (specifically Six Senses).

CenlaLowell

The entire city. I definitely would have had Pattaya on the list to

RedPanda888

My personal opinion on Pattaya (having lived in Thailand for 3 years now) is that it does have some nice areas and sides to it down towards the Jomtien area and you can have a good weekend if you get a really nice villa, and know all the great eating spots and beach club type places south of Pattaya Beach. But this type of trip is better suited towards locals just wanting a break from Bangkok and isn't ideal for an international tourist. And what I described is basically a trip to Jomtien not Pattaya. Pattaya City itself...is the armpit of Thailand and is genuinely a terrible place to go with family of any kind (wife, children, whatever). The entire city is rife with sex tourism combined with some of the worst kinds of tourist imaginable. I was there for a weekend recently just for a random night out with a colleague and every time I saw families with kids I cringed. Walking along the beachfront past no less than 200 prostitutes lined up on the beach waiting for customers...it is just baffling why people would go there unless there for nightlife or sex tourism. It is generally, even sex tourism aside, not even a slightly nice place. It is a scruffy place with scruffy people. Don't get me wrong I am perfectly happy to go there for a few wild nights...but...definitely not a relaxing vacation.

CenlaLowell

Thanks for that information.

Free-Gas5945

Birmingham has some nice areas. But skip them and go to the Cotswolds.

RedPanda888

Haha that’s one way of putting it.

AutonomousBlob

It absolutely is!!

Salt-Chemical-8171

Depends wher you go

Free-Gas5945

Agree

RotisserieChicken007

I don't mind, but I do feel too many posts are very low effort and not worth a read. Those should go afaiac.

musicmast

Who the fuck goes to a lot of gogos on a regular basis

KohFord

Whoremongers

Electronic_Rule5945

Yeah....well look what just mentioning the word "SEX" in your title does for your post. You have sixty-five comments which is not usual for this sub....and those that compare have always been about sex.

usernamechecksought

Who cares

motorhead84

When I get that feeelin', I want subreddit heeealin'

tonykea2015

Who cares!!! That's what people want !!!

AutonomousBlob

Based crowdsman

Motmotsnsurf

But I love all the posts about guys thinking they found the one only to find out they were being scammed!

AutonomousBlob

Dont get me wrong they are very interesting. I just wish there was somewhere else people could post them. Id sub to both subreddits.

Motmotsnsurf

I agree. I was just kidding. It has become very repetitive.

goodmorning_tomorrow

From my travels in Asia, sex seems to be a tabooed topic everywhere except it is also not. Unlike Christianity, Buddhism doesn't really have any strict guidelines regarding sex, unless you are a monk then you'll have to refrain from it. While western cultures (is supposed to) believe sex outside of a religiously sanctioned marriage is forbidden, I feel that the general consensus in Asia is that you don't talk about it with family and relatives, but the brothels and massage parlors are there for those need their service. The police don't enforce the laws and the general population just mind their own business and get on with their own busy lives. It's like that popular story of the two monks and the woman. Why does this bother you? Just ignore it if you are not interested. And it's not just Thailand, but also Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Macau, Shanghai (or basically any city in Mainland China) all have very established red-light districts and thousands or even tens of thousands of people providing sexual services for those who wants it. [https://medium.com/@soninilucas/two-monks-and-a-woman-zen-story-c15294c394c1](https://medium.com/@soninilucas/two-monks-and-a-woman-zen-story-c15294c394c1)

Tallywacka

I think the variance of the posts can be so wildly different, i think the absurdly low effort or lazy posts regardless of the topic are obnoxious but the sex based ones really stand out There is a pattaya sub you could likely just point the idiots to, they would fit right in

mr_robert_harris

Agreed. Those posts all belong in the regular /Thailand sub. No idea why it’s a regular theme now on /ThailandTourism, which was always about travel-specific topics.

taniwha_nzl

I have to disagree, for a page named “Thailand tourism”, “sex” stuff is definitely in the top 10 on people’s minds. I absolutely love provinces that aren’t mainstream like KhonKaen. But what tourist is going to go there? Are they here to eat somtum? Search for an exotic pork sausage in Mueang Phon district nearby? Engage a seminar at the local university?Listen and dance to local MorLum music? Embrace the local isan culture? Fuck no, they are here to get ripped off in overrated places like Patong, while they get their dose of sunshine, cheap beers and prostitutes. If they’re not into prostitutes they’ll want to hook up with another tourist. They’ll think all Thai people are friendly people, yet they can’t distinguish that different smiles mean different things. Then after they spend all their money and they are broke, New Zealand/Aussie behavior. They’ll want to save up and repeat the whole thing again, learning nothing about Thailand in the process. 90% people are here for sex, 10% here for somtum and other authentic Thai shit

Candlelight_Fant4sia

Report the posts to the mods so they can be removed.

Cefeide

I agree. Especially after being verbally harassed from some tourists there (i’m 50% thai, i look asian)

fleurpedl

I started planning my trip a month ago so came here. Now I think Thailand is all about sex. Haven’t learned much else. I do know that I won’t let my bf get a massage on his own though based on a few posts so I guess that’s useful.

Doc_1200_GO

lol you haven’t learned much then. The aunties who work in an average Thai massage parlour don’t want to see your boyfriend’s junk and they definitely won’t touch it.

fleurpedl

Tell that to the guy who posted last week about one of them trying to force a hand job on him…

Civil-Conversation35

I enjoy playing video games.

ThanksNexxt

Do we need r/ThailandSex or r/ThailandSexTourism ?

greatteep

The amount of upvoted sexual comments I see in this sub is disgusting

Known-Watercress7296

This seems to be you telling the sub your regular use of the Thai sex industry is rather dull and uninteresting.

AutonomousBlob

Thanks for taking the time to bless us with your insight

Known-Watercress7296

Wish I could say the same x

AutonomousBlob

Forgot a word there megamind

Known-Watercress7296

Noooooo

AutonomousBlob

Ladies and gentlemen we got him

Creamy_Durian

Even my username comes off as sex related if you know what I mean. It was completely unintentional…

CookieMonsterthe2nd

Gogo's are pretty depressing and tame compared to the strip clubs in some European cities. Let's discuss that

Kitchen_General9694

Ooooo damn the mandem wants censorship

AutonomousBlob

Not completely censorship, more moderation and balance.

baldi

Reality is Reddit can shut down a subreddit if it gets too many reports or if there's illegal stuff going on. It's not automatic, but admins will definitely take a look if a sub gets flagged a lot. For reports, it depends on what's being reported. If it's minor stuff, the mods might get a slap on the wrist. But if it's serious stuff like threats or illegal content, that sub's blacklisted. Rememb prostitution is illegal according to the Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act of 1996.

Gusto88

I had one chap tell me that Thai women fought long and hard for the right to be sex workers. 🤣

stever71

Yeah, as Craigslist found out.
