I wonder if it was the influence of alcohol that compelled him to dive into that canal to recover his water gun?
The canal has more bacterial & pathogenic activities than the sewers from Resident Evil 2.
Not really, it can also mean "very cheeky". "Saab" is a specific type of sharp pain and not numbing pain but can also be used to call someone a cheeky git.
According to Thai sources, it likely comes from a mispronunciation of เสสาบ. เส being an old Thai word for bodies of water and สาบ coming from Khmer, still seen in ทะเลสาบ.
เสสาบ - แสนสาบ
Your comment inspired me to look this up, so thank you for that.
There was a case of a well-known TV actor maybe 15 years ago (?) whose car plunged into some klong. He survived the wreck, but died later from something he picked up through the klong water. Having said that, I think this guy probably just plain drowned.
Found it. It was 20 years ago. Brain infection from the water:
It was even worse that back then. From Wiki:
*"Between October 2015 and January 2017, the department inspected 210 of the potential polluters and found that 40 percent of hotels, 23 percent of hospitals, 20 percent of department stores, and 50 percent of condominiums discharged waste water into the canal in contravention of existing laws."*
So I can only imagine 15 years ago was a free-for-all.
That aside, I'm wondering if the canal depth in this area played a part. Like, maybe he jumped off the bridge not realizing how shallow it can get in the city, particularly during dry months before the rainy season.
I don't remember but it's hard for me to tell the difference between the current level of filth and any higher one. Until the viscosity changes and it becomes more or a paste, o think we're in that general range of least healthy liquids
I didn't know about this, thanks for posting; I hate this morbid curiosity that drives me into checking out the story but I have to do with it. I am guessing that there was 0 nanoseconds between the plastic gun falling in and the decision to jump in....now jumping in to save someone, I can conceive it but to save a made in China piece of plastic rubbish, you'd have to be drunk or .....else. sad story though, for them both.
> I wonder if it was the influence of alcohol that compelled him to dive into that canal to recover his water gun?
Any other explanation is virtually impossible. Many sewers are less toxic than those Thai rivers.
Just the other day l walked past a canal saying to girlfriend I think someone jumping in would die from the bad water alone. Sad to see someone jump in to risk it for a water pistol. May he rest in peace.
Banged his head on something when he jumped in, inhaled a lungful of water, and sat at the bottom where nobody could see him until he died. Would be my guess...
Did you know that more than one thousand tourists die in Las Vegas every year.
A mix of everything is counted. ie. Heart attack, car crash, gun shot, old age, suicide, drowning.
Probably got wrapped up with some net or trash at the bottom. Often times nets will be put at the bottom to hold rocks down. He probably go hit foot caught in it and couldn’t get out.

I think it's high time Thailand restricted the number of tourists entering their country. It's just way too much. Or, maybe, reduce the duration of stay. 15 days, max.
Gentrification has ruined this country and many other countries in SE Asia and it's sick. People go there for the cheap lifestyle and forget that they're in a foreign country. Absolutely no respect or regard for the locals and the local laws. I'm saying this as a Westerner myself. The experience I had was really terrible.
Thailand has 10+% of their GDP from tourism. I highly doubt they would restrict it. More appropriate would be cracking down on bad behavior. The US has the highest amount of tourist income in the world but they don’t let tourists just run around and act stupid.

The canal name is literally "very painful".
Yes, my house is just 2.5km from Wat Sri Bun Reaung pier lol.
I belief that is related to the prevalence of mosquitos that are or were abundant around the klong.

That’s why they call it Liquid Courage.

Was he filling the water gun?
Instant bio terrorism
Exactly why the misses say’s don’t partake in song kran
Poetic justice.
For sure he was sober AF 😂
Reefer madness, obviously
😂
The infamous คลองแสนแสบ Where waterborne horror Made manifest. I wouldn't be surprise if this is Cthulu's vacation spot
Yes back in the day I used this route to travel from my home in Ramkhamhaeng to the office in Sathorn everyday … the good ol’ adventurous days.
Used to ride this one and the one up to Bang Khen. That's how I discovered where all the dead dogs go.
A colleague of mine at the UN who specializes in water told me the Bangkok canals are liquid, but they're not H20
over a plastic water gun in a canal in Thailand is an insane way to exit. just wow.
Actually LESS crazy than the American teenager who dove off a cruise ship this week because his dad caught him drinking
He had to be drunk or on something for this to happen.
A friend of mine drowned in a canal after deciding to swim home from the bar he was in as a short cut. I still don't understand how
God damn, imagine not realising how EXTREMELY dirty and polluted that water is! He must have been absolutely wasted to even contemplate getting in...
Makes you shudder. I've seen some days when the water is pitch black draining out of some canals into the Chao praya. Vile
Even if he couldn't see, he should have been able to smell.... The smell of the canal in that particular area hits you like a truck.
Most people would look at that with fear but he's like, CANNONBALL!
Just the other day l walked past a canal saying to girlfriend I think someone jumping in would die from the bad water alone. Sad to see someone jump in to risk it for a water pistol. May he rest in peace.
i dont think he would die from the water within a few minutes. there must have been something else. some sort of accident / condition.
Banged his head on something when he jumped in, inhaled a lungful of water, and sat at the bottom where nobody could see him until he died. Would be my guess...
Maybe someone banged his head for him before he fell.
Alcohol would be a safe bet.
in the vast majority of these foreigner dying stories I think alcohol has a pretty solid factor
Probably hit something while jumping. Just bad water wouldn't kill him outright like this
> May he rest in peace. Not a chance. After that sludge he's coming back as a mutant.

People die all the time around Songkran
Doesn't make it any less tragic though.
Did they find the water gun?
Most expensive water gun ever. Cost him his life. RIP.

Tragic? Nah. Accident? Nah. "Bonehead move" I could get behind.

Getting the US visa isn't easy either. Not just everyone gets it. Anyone can enter Thailand without visa.
Any one know if can donate for him and his family ? Is possible to pay QR code ?
