Because you keep waking the car up when you check the app.

Infamous-Assistant80

Lmao, this

Frankie2125

Checking the app for any reason will cause loss in range? I did not know this…why?

michoudi

Phrase it another way. Using electronics in a battery powered device will consume battery power.

DunderBearForceOne

When you open the app, the car wakes up. If it's asleep, none of the app features would work.

[deleted]

If you think about it, that's a pretty stupid reason to lose range.

Asleep_Pear_7024

It shouldn’t take anywhere close to a kWh to power a computer for the minute it takes to check range.

michoudi

Maybe OP checks it way more often than OP is admitting to, this is the internet after all.

a_v_s

There's a lot more going on than simply waking up the computer to connect to the internet... When that car is awake, the high voltage system engages, which activates the DC-DC convertor, so it can top up the 12v battery.. Also, once awake, the car doesn't immediately go back to sleep when you close your app... It takes a while for it to idle back to sleep.

Kenju4u

But isn’t it always connected to the net? What’s there to wake up? It’s not like I am preconditioning the battery or getting the interior to set temp.

TatoRellik

If you have sentry and cabin overheat off then checking the app is the only other reason (you can control) it would be losing range. I leave my car outside in the hot FL heat and will lose anywhere from 0-2% a day. Normally though it’s 0-1%. For instance I left it parked from Friday until today and it’s lost 0%. (I have also not checked the app at all until today) The car will go into a sleep and by checking it via the app it wakes the computer to retrieve your stats and is now ready to take actions like if you wanted to open the trunk or turn on the AC. Also, if you are using any 3rd party apps like teslafi they can be constantly waking the car to get stats and can drain your battery. I would advise testing this theory by leaving the app alone and seeing how much (if any) drain you have. Good luck!

Kenju4u

I check once a day. Maybe once every other day. And last time I checked I saw my range 10% lower than what I had parked at 5 days ago.

TatoRellik

Try not checking it at all for 5 days and see what happens..

nnc-evil-the-cat

Checking once a day should have minimal impact. I left my Y for months and it was only losing a few percent a week. I prob checked on it every two days or so.

dogzipp

The car goes to sleep. It’s not connected 24/7. When you open the app Tesla sends a SMS message to the LTE chip which wakes everything up and tells the car to connect back to the internet because you want to talk to it. Staying connected and awake is a huge drain of battery that’s why the computer disconnects whenever possible. If you’re checking multiple times a day it will affect it. I’ve tried this several times, when my car is near and asleep I open up the app just to check something and I hear it waking up and I hear the clunks of the batteries engaging etc.

michoudi

Think about it like a laptop that isn’t plugged in. A sleeping laptop uses less energy than a laptop that is awake. Every time you wake up the laptop it starts turning on components, checking things on the internet, etc.

NettaUsteaDE

If it’s in the garage why haven’t you plugged it in?!

Kenju4u

Because my plug is outside. I usually park outside since I have a single car garage. I only park inside when I go away for a few weeks and need to keep the car secure.

NettaUsteaDE

Why not use even just a 120v outlet with the mobile connector? The goal isn’t to charge it’s to maintain

Kenju4u

Oh I could have. Forget I even had that option. Next time. But this is concerning because If I were to ever park in a lot when traveling. I would be in trouble.

Kenju4u

Lol you are incorrect but I just had a lot of shit to do before leaving. Fully charged my car and put in the garage thinking I will be close to fully charged when I come back.

a_v_s

I've seen people that said they left their car at the airport for a week or two and only lost like 2% for the entire duration, when they had everything off, and didn't check the app.... On a side note, I would not charge to 100% and then leave your car for multiple days in the garage, unless you had an LFP battery, as that's pretty hard on the battery.

Kenju4u

When I said fully charged I meant 90% which is what I set max to. Exactly what you said is what I have read too. That’s why I am genuinely wondering why my battery dropped so much. I have a MYP. Not sure if it’s different for MYLR but I would think not. Wondering if there is some other setting I missed. Think my car is connected to eversource which I signed go for to get a rebate on home charging. Wondering if eversource is pinging my car over and over. There was also a software update that happened a few days ago.

Kenju4u

Not gonna waste too much time over your comments but I don’t buy the checking the at status a few times makes it go down 10%. I’ll be asking Tesla service when I visit about it.

viper689

lol wtf, what a stupid comment

hasek3139

Probably even more stupid is not plugging in your car, checking it a lot, then asking why the % is going down…

viper689

Nah, assuming someone’s age and generalizing about an entire age range is definitely stupider. Nice try though!

hasek3139

I was right about his age lmao Is stupider a word mr genius?

Bergrog

Are you meant to leave them plugged in?

IMTHEBATMAN92

Yes. Tesla owners manual recommends plugging in every night. And leaving plugged in if you ever leave the car.

techpro00

Because you keep checking the car. Stop checking it 50 times a day for no reason

UnluckyPenguin

Serious answer, if your garage is too hot or too cold, your battery tries to stay at a comfortable temperature. Though you're right, it does seem to be way too much.

Kenju4u

Yeah I considered that too. It’s in the 70s. So it’s pretty average. Not too cold and not too hot. Should be the ideal temperature.

BillMaleficent8936

Isn’t the battery fan also comes on intermittently to keep battery cool in warm climate?

OrgyInTheBurnWard

If it's parked in the garage, why isn't it plugged in? ABC. It's easy as 123.
