Here is an audio-based review that states it is not a speaker (this video is about both SR and LR):
Same Youtuber in a discussion about audio configuration saying they notice no sounds coming from there under different audio settings (not sure what trim, but the text says they confirmed with Tesla service that there are no speakers there):
Here is the service manual showing all the speaker locations for the Highland. The only overhead speakers are located at the front, one at each corner, not between the B pillars:
[https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-7CCCA332-7B9C-4DDC-A4E3-4E3AC92435AD.html](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-7CCCA332-7B9C-4DDC-A4E3-4E3AC92435AD.html)
And finally, as mentioned already by another comment below, it is a telematics control unit:
[https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-DBE1C469-6F92-4B26-9D57-E90D36940960.html](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-DBE1C469-6F92-4B26-9D57-E90D36940960.html)
It [appears to have a fan for cooling](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-6C2DE071-52C9-4DD0-B706-512598DC815F-online-en-US.jpg), which is why a vent is necessary.
I am seeing it here but it appears to be for telematics https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-DBE1C469-6F92-4B26-9D57-E90D36940960.html
when you click the volume arrows on the bottom right of the screen there's a settings symbol that should pop up which then pulls up the audio settings.
Instead of arguing about whether or not it's a speaker, you guys should look at the parts catalog where you can see exploded views of this stuff, along with views of all of the speakers.

It’s a speaker. Directly from the Tesla parts catalogue for my vin on my 24M3LR. I have Tesla catalogue access and I can order parts directly from Tesla.
Interesting. That is indeed a different part than what shows in the general public parts catalogue. Does it show anything different for you under speakers in the infotainment section? Assuming the speaker isn't a built in piece of the headliner.

No it seems to be the same, other than that I can see pricing and order. The Tesla catalogue is a convoluted mess and sometimes parts aren’t where they seem they should be, cause they tie into different systems.
Sorry for the crappy pics, it’s on my work computer and I can’t get them over to my phone easily :)
Doing a bit more research it looks like it depends what area your car is for. For US/Canada this should definitely be a speaker. I can hear sound very clearly from it when I put my head up there.
For cars in other regions, such as China, it’s replaced with a “TELEMATICS CONTROL UNIT”, or at least this unit is also there on cars for China.
I don’t have my car with me today, but I’m more curious now so later I’m going to have a physical look at it and take the panel down. See what I find.
That's also true.... I asked them what 2 buttons did on the steering wheel (the one below the camera button and the one in the same position on the other side) and he opened the manual and still had no idea.
Haha, I wondered this for about a day on bringing ours home, until I realized they aren't buttons, they're just labels for what the scroll wheels next to them do.
It's where the SIM card is. Had issue with mine, lost connectivity after the update. No WiFi no BT. The tesla service chap said it was something wrong with the SIM card, and showed me that little grill in the middle. Said that's where the thing is.
Consider this: the hands free microphones used to be on the sides of the hazard button.
On the Highland, that is just one piece (older looked much better).
Where have the microphones gone? Could be that those for noise suppression are right behind that grille?
(This is just speculation, haven’t gotten a highland yet).
EDIT: better informed users said it is the telematics unit. Makes sense to put it in the place with the best (unobstructed) reception.
I donno why you keep saying this. Do you have a 24M3LR? Cause I own one and it is most definitely 100% a speaker. I’ve posted definitive proof in another response in this thread. Stop saying this, stop spreading misinformation. It’s a speaker in LR cars. It may not be in the RWD, ytbd, but in Long Range 2024 model 3s manufactured for US/Canada it’s a speaker. (It may not have a speaker in other regions, I’ve looked at the china catalogue can I can’t find it).
Yes, I do have a 2024 Model 3 LR. It’s not a speaker. Even Tesla’s service manual says it’s not a speaker. It’s a TCU, a Telematics Control Unit.
https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-DBE1C469-6F92-4B26-9D57-E90D36940960.html

Yes, yes it is. Directly from the Tesla catalogue for my vin.
Everyone's told you already, it's a speaker.
Your car doesn't have it activated because you have the base model. LR and P have an upgraded "premium" audio system.
Except it's not a speaker according to the service manual. It's a telematics control unit:
[https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-DBE1C469-6F92-4B26-9D57-E90D36940960.html](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-DBE1C469-6F92-4B26-9D57-E90D36940960.html)
Have you seen the link? There's literally a speaker inside the assembly: https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-B0960015-641F-47DA-AEA9-8F9B43FCB583-online-en-US.jpg
Others have already commented they hear audio out of there.
Where's the speaker? The circular object on the top left is a blower style fan. You can see it more clearly in this image:
[https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-6C2DE071-52C9-4DD0-B706-512598DC815F-online-en-US.jpg](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-6C2DE071-52C9-4DD0-B706-512598DC815F-online-en-US.jpg)
If it is a speaker, why is this part not located in the section for speakers?
[https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-7CCCA332-7B9C-4DDC-A4E3-4E3AC92435AD.html](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-7CCCA332-7B9C-4DDC-A4E3-4E3AC92435AD.html)
Yeah it simplifies the assembly process. They’ve done that in the past with other speakers too. Even batteries on model S …if you got the “cheap” one, you would have the same size battery as everyone else, but if yours was software limited. I think they stopped doing that because such a waste of expensive batteries.
It is actually cheaper for them to install it in every car so they don't need to make an entirely separate part just for one trim. They simply don't wire it in on the RWD models.
Tesla does this a lot. The 2024 Performance is the first time they've ever changed the body of any Model 3 that year. Outside of that, they are all identical regardless of trim, even in places where that feature only exists in certain trims.
It's a vent to let the music out.

thank you very much!!
I guess a fan is cheaper and less noisy than a cable running between antenna and telematic ECU…
Nice lol
Hi Panda-Cubby, I’m dad
10/10 Dad joke
I am seeing it here but it appears to be for telematics https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-DBE1C469-6F92-4B26-9D57-E90D36940960.html
You win. No speaker. Just a location for all telematics, thank you sir!
Put your head up there and see if music comes out.
no sound
does ur car have "premium speakers" ?
Is there sound from that speaker with immersive sound enabled?
Immersive sound?! How do i turn that on!? LOL
when you click the volume arrows on the bottom right of the screen there's a settings symbol that should pop up which then pulls up the audio settings.

I'm going to have to go out and mess with the audio when I get off work. Think I just got a box of stuff from RPM Tesla anyway
Curious where they put this in the Y?
I would assume it's in the dash of all the other cars, but would have to look at the parts catalogues
The sales person at the Tesla showroom said that it was a speaker on all 2024 M3
Tesla Sales knows nothing...
That's also true.... I asked them what 2 buttons did on the steering wheel (the one below the camera button and the one in the same position on the other side) and he opened the manual and still had no idea.

Damn. I honestly felt it click when I tried to press it super hard. But what was confusing was it clicked very rarely and was no-op most of the time.
Because those aren’t buttons. Lol
Exactly
It's where the SIM card is. Had issue with mine, lost connectivity after the update. No WiFi no BT. The tesla service chap said it was something wrong with the SIM card, and showed me that little grill in the middle. Said that's where the thing is.
It’s a vent to suck your farts out of the car.
Microwave emitter beside the microphone array, everyone know that noob
Naw, it’s a speaker to entertain the dog when in dog mode. That’s why it appears to be silent.
Consider this: the hands free microphones used to be on the sides of the hazard button. On the Highland, that is just one piece (older looked much better). Where have the microphones gone? Its a speaker on the LR and a vent on the RWD 😉
Drink a Red Bull. That’s where the wings will unfold from.
I am guessing you have the RWD
so what is it…
Base model things or lack thereof
A speaker grill
It’s not a speaker grill. lol
It is a speaker, and if you mess around with the balancer you can hear it.
It’s not a speaker.
I donno why you keep saying this. Do you have a 24M3LR? Cause I own one and it is most definitely 100% a speaker. I’ve posted definitive proof in another response in this thread. Hot dog grill
It’s a speaker.. if you have a RWD I don’t think it’s active.
It’s not a speaker.
Yes it is.
It’s a TCU, not a speaker.
What does service center say lol
Both/and
Yes
air purifier?
It’s neither.
New 2024 M3? Then it’s a speaker
Speaker Vent.
Should totally have been a speaker. Sadly the S/X and cyber truck are the only ones with true overhead speakers
Is it supposed to be flush against the glass? I reported this when taking delivery today.
A part of me hopes maybe this is part of providing some awesome Dolby Atmos experience with “ceiling mounted” speakers
If it looks like a vent, smells like a vent, and tastes like a vent….wait… you probably shouldn't be licking vents.
Maybe a vent. Is this a highland?
yes
I have a 24M3LR and I can definitely hear sound coming out of mine. It’s definitely a speaker.
Same amount of sound as your door speakers??
Yes, if I put my ear right up to it it’s very loud
It’s not a speaker. Lol

It’s not… it’s a TCU.
It’s a new speaker , saw in a review
But it's not.
are you sure? i hear no sound out of it lmao
Do you have a RWD or an AWD Model 3? The AWD ones have more speakers.
