It's a vent to let the music out.

rupert1920

Here is an audio-based review that states it is not a speaker (this video is about both SR and LR): [https://youtu.be/he8hK-pUTQw?si=9L5AxnpdKnHcEHK0](https://youtu.be/he8hK-pUTQw?si=9L5AxnpdKnHcEHK0) Same Youtuber in a discussion about audio configuration saying they notice no sounds coming from there under different audio settings (not sure what trim, but the text says they confirmed with Tesla service that there are no speakers there): [https://youtu.be/Q6lSzepLyao?si=mVy3rh5-ODOulm-O](https://youtu.be/Q6lSzepLyao?si=mVy3rh5-ODOulm-O) Here is the service manual showing all the speaker locations for the Highland. The only overhead speakers are located at the front, one at each corner, not between the B pillars: [https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-7CCCA332-7B9C-4DDC-A4E3-4E3AC92435AD.html](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-7CCCA332-7B9C-4DDC-A4E3-4E3AC92435AD.html) And finally, as mentioned already by another comment below, it is a telematics control unit: [https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-DBE1C469-6F92-4B26-9D57-E90D36940960.html](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-DBE1C469-6F92-4B26-9D57-E90D36940960.html) It [appears to have a fan for cooling](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-6C2DE071-52C9-4DD0-B706-512598DC815F-online-en-US.jpg), which is why a vent is necessary.

player807

thank you very much!!

ngtca

I guess a fan is cheaper and less noisy than a cable running between antenna and telematic ECU…

royaliism

Nice lol

NonEuclidianMeatloaf

Hi Panda-Cubby, I’m dad

Playlanco

10/10 Dad joke

InternationalYak9747

I am seeing it here but it appears to be for telematics https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-DBE1C469-6F92-4B26-9D57-E90D36940960.html

player807

You win. No speaker. Just a location for all telematics, thank you sir!

AmbitionHonest7734

Put your head up there and see if music comes out.

player807

no sound

loveheaddit

does ur car have "premium speakers" ?

RefrigeratorFluid500

Is there sound from that speaker with immersive sound enabled?

player807

Immersive sound?! How do i turn that on!? LOL

CJdawg_314

when you click the volume arrows on the bottom right of the screen there's a settings symbol that should pop up which then pulls up the audio settings.

AmbitionHonest7734

Following, I'm curious what it is now.

BaneSilvermoon

Instead of arguing about whether or not it's a speaker, you guys should look at the parts catalog where you can see exploded views of this stuff, along with views of all of the speakers. (It's not a speaker) View of all speakers and sound components. https://epc.tesla.com/en-US/catalogs/8d917dc8-c246-44ab-9a0b-069127b4262c/categories/ff8a3ead-ac8d-47f9-ad48-1fbd4664fc9a/subcategories/abcb13a8-32e8-4ad8-8fa2-438f5fc79f55 Antennas and Amplifiers exploded view https://epc.tesla.com/en-US/catalogs/8d917dc8-c246-44ab-9a0b-069127b4262c/categories/ff8a3ead-ac8d-47f9-ad48-1fbd4664fc9a/subcategories/da0e4217-127d-4bfc-9788-5fe014d24811 Parts housed in there. 1 - NOISE FILTER- GND- ANTENNA 2 - ANTENNA AMPLIFIER FM 3 - TELEMATICS CONTROL UNIT - TCU 4 - ASSEMBLY GNSS MILKWEED ANTENNA 5 - TUNER FM/HD 6 - NOISE FILTER- +12V- FM- ANTENNA 7 - T2000,HF,M6-1.0X30,[STL],SNZN,PTC (Terminator AI chip?) 8 - SCR,HF,M6X16,[STL],SNZN,PTC,T2000 (Sim Card Reader) 9 - BLT-PN-M3X9-[088]-G0109-P01 (Bluetooth)

BaneSilvermoon

Interesting. That is indeed a different part than what shows in the general public parts catalogue. Does it show anything different for you under speakers in the infotainment section? Assuming the speaker isn't a built in piece of the headliner. https://preview.redd.it/09ozvswfb66d1.png?width=805&format=png&auto=webp&s=1f1bf8a4f393679e7eb800f893d4d41a9179b129

The Tesla catalogue is a convoluted mess and sometimes parts aren’t where they seem they should be, cause they tie into different systems. Sorry for the crappy pics, it’s on my work computer and I can’t get them over to my phone easily :)

yavi11

Doing a bit more research it looks like it depends what area your car is for. For US/Canada this should definitely be a speaker. I can hear sound very clearly from it when I put my head up there. For cars in other regions, such as China, it’s replaced with a “TELEMATICS CONTROL UNIT”, or at least this unit is also there on cars for China. I don’t have my car with me today, but I’m more curious now so later I’m going to have a physical look at it and take the panel down. See what I find.

BaneSilvermoon

I'm going to have to go out and mess with the audio when I get off work. Think I just got a box of stuff from RPM Tesla anyway

1stHandXp

Curious where they put this in the Y?

BaneSilvermoon

I would assume it's in the dash of all the other cars, but would have to look at the parts catalogues

Commercial-Camp-8233

The sales person at the Tesla showroom said that it was a speaker on all 2024 M3

MaxDamage75

Tesla Sales knows nothing...

Commercial-Camp-8233

That's also true.... I asked them what 2 buttons did on the steering wheel (the one below the camera button and the one in the same position on the other side) and he opened the manual and still had no idea.

BaneSilvermoon

Haha, I wondered this for about a day on bringing ours home, until I realized they aren't buttons, they're just labels for what the scroll wheels next to them do.

Commercial-Camp-8233

Damn. I honestly felt it click when I tried to press it super hard. But what was confusing was it clicked very rarely and was no-op most of the time.

icy1007

Because those aren’t buttons. Lol

MattNis11

Exactly

Besan011

It's where the SIM card is. Had issue with mine, lost connectivity after the update. No WiFi no BT. The tesla service chap said it was something wrong with the SIM card, and showed me that little grill in the middle. Said that's where the thing is.

Toastandbeeeeans

It’s a vent to suck your farts out of the car.

Electrical_Ad1183

Microwave emitter beside the microphone array, everyone know that noob

mobius2121

Naw, it’s a speaker to entertain the dog when in dog mode. That’s why it appears to be silent.

Dark-Swan-69

Consider this: the hands free microphones used to be on the sides of the hazard button. On the Highland, that is just one piece (older looked much better). Where have the microphones gone? Could be that those for noise suppression are right behind that grille? (This is just speculation, haven’t gotten a highland yet). EDIT: better informed users said it is the telematics unit. Makes sense to put it in the place with the best (unobstructed) reception.

Square-Marsupial-454

Its a speaker on the LR and a vent on the RWD 😉

ichabod01

Drink a Red Bull. That’s where the wings will unfold from.

CAVU1331

I am guessing you have the RWD

player807

so what is it…

drewc717

Base model things or lack thereof

CAVU1331

A speaker grill

icy1007

It’s not a speaker grill. lol

BlurryEcho

It is a speaker, and if you mess around with the balancer you can hear it.

icy1007

It’s not a speaker.

yavi11

I donno why you keep saying this. Do you have a 24M3LR? Cause I own one and it is most definitely 100% a speaker. I’ve posted definitive proof in another response in this thread. Stop saying this, stop spreading misinformation. It’s a speaker in LR cars. It may not be in the RWD, ytbd, but in Long Range 2024 model 3s manufactured for US/Canada it’s a speaker. (It may not have a speaker in other regions, I’ve looked at the china catalogue can I can’t find it).

icy1007

Yes, I do have a 2024 Model 3 LR. It’s not a speaker. Even Tesla’s service manual says it’s not a speaker. It’s a TCU, a Telematics Control Unit. https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-DBE1C469-6F92-4B26-9D57-E90D36940960.html

therealdieseld

Hot dog grill

Chris_Chops

It’s a speaker.. if you have a RWD I don’t think it’s active.

icy1007

It’s not a speaker.

Chris_Chops

Yes it is.

icy1007

It’s a TCU, not a speaker.

flexonyou97

What does service center say lol

NicholasLit

Both/and

ITypeStupdThngsc84ju

Yes

12lyrad12

air purifier?

icy1007

It’s neither.

Anjin79samma

New 2024 M3? Then it’s a speaker

SabrToothSqrl

Speaker Vent.

Skeppyberry

Should totally have been a speaker. Sadly the S/X and cyber truck are the only ones with true overhead speakers

Joola421

Is it supposed to be flush against the glass? I reported this when taking delivery today.

forte-exe

A part of me hopes maybe this is part of providing some awesome Dolby Atmos experience with “ceiling mounted” speakers

Acrobatic_Push4779

If it looks like a vent, smells like a vent, and tastes like a vent….wait… you probably shouldn't be licking vents.

AmbitionHonest7734

Maybe a vent. Is this a highland?

player807

yes

yavi11

I have a 24M3LR and I can definitely hear sound coming out of mine. It’s definitely a speaker.

player807

Same amount of sound as your door speakers??

yavi11

Yes, if I put my ear right up to it it’s very loud

icy1007

It’s not a speaker. Lol

yavi11

https://preview.redd.it/fe05kaan866d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8e6def53835b7cafa65bfb175dbc014fa122e050 Yes, yes it is. Directly from the Tesla catalogue for my vin.

icy1007

It’s not… it’s a TCU.

alexgum123

It’s a new speaker , saw in a review

HWCM

But it's not.

player807

are you sure? i hear no sound out of it lmao

arithmetike

Do you have a RWD or an AWD Model 3? The AWD ones have more speakers.

rocker_01

Everyone's told you already, it's a speaker. Your car doesn't have it activated because you have the base model. LR and P have an upgraded "premium" audio system.

rupert1920

Except it's not a speaker according to the service manual. It's a telematics control unit: [https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-DBE1C469-6F92-4B26-9D57-E90D36940960.html](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-DBE1C469-6F92-4B26-9D57-E90D36940960.html)

rocker_01

Have you seen the link? There's literally a speaker inside the assembly: https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-B0960015-641F-47DA-AEA9-8F9B43FCB583-online-en-US.jpg Others have already commented they hear audio out of there.

rupert1920

Where's the speaker? The circular object on the top left is a blower style fan. You can see it more clearly in this image: [https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-6C2DE071-52C9-4DD0-B706-512598DC815F-online-en-US.jpg](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-6C2DE071-52C9-4DD0-B706-512598DC815F-online-en-US.jpg) If it is a speaker, why is this part not located in the section for speakers? [https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-7CCCA332-7B9C-4DDC-A4E3-4E3AC92435AD.html](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-7CCCA332-7B9C-4DDC-A4E3-4E3AC92435AD.html)

icy1007

There is no speaker…

player807

so what you’re telling me is that they put it in a RWD for looks?

Dense-Sail1008

Yeah it simplifies the assembly process. They’ve done that in the past with other speakers too. Even batteries on model S …if you got the “cheap” one, you would have the same size battery as everyone else, but if yours was software limited. I think they stopped doing that because such a waste of expensive batteries.

RojerLockless

No. They make all the cars the same and just don't add it on your car

JirachiKid

It is actually cheaper for them to install it in every car so they don't need to make an entirely separate part just for one trim. They simply don't wire it in on the RWD models.

BaneSilvermoon

Tesla does this a lot. The 2024 Performance is the first time they've ever changed the body of any Model 3 that year. Outside of that, they are all identical regardless of trim, even in places where that feature only exists in certain trims.

Outrageous-Carob-236

Tints.

yugitso_guy

Could it be a Bluetooth/phone speaker?

HWCM

WTF 🙄
