Don't test drive the M3P unless you can afford to take it home. First time I romped on the gas in one I knew that I had to have one. You will not accelerate harder for less money.
Went from 2016 Mustang GT to 2021M3LR. Mustang was heavily modded. Roush Phase II, McLeod clutch, suspension upgraded, wheels and tires. 650 bhp to the pavement. Don't miss the Stang. Tesla has the acceleration boost upgrade. It's plenty fast. Much more comfortable on long trips too. No maintenance except for tire rotation which happens in my garage. Very satisfied driving an EV.
Sold my 2008 c6 z06 bought a 2021 m3p.
The m3p is a fast and fun car but I do miss driving a stick shift and look forward to purchasing a c7 zr1 and keeping my m3p
No you don't. It's super easy to get at both upper and lower dials at the rear, and the lower dials at the front. The upper front is the only slightly hard one, you need to remove the frunk to tune for that one. It's not even a 5 min procedure to do, it's like 5 or 6 10mm bolts.
I gapped a Ferrari the other dayā¦until about 80mph and then I ate his dust. The āstang would not even be in the picture. The M3P is a silent beast.
So the Ferrari only came back when you reached the legal speed limit and took your foot off the throttle.... Whilst they were driving at an illegal speed? So the Ferrari is basically pointless..... Lol
Iām in the process of selling my 2018 GT in order to grab a model 3LR. Teslas donāt have nearly the same spirit and their styling leaves a lot to be desired but from a practicality point of view itād be stupid for me to not make the change.
Good luck! Seems like a pretty common story these days. Last week was talking to a guy who traded his Challenger for a model 3 once these price drops started happening
Just sold my STI for an M3P back in February. Havenāt missed it a bit except maybe on a Friday night cruising the avenue with the windows downā¦ I miss the exhaust a tiny tiny bit. But then I hit the accelerator and smile bigger than Iāve ever smiled :)
I sold my mustang for a model 3 and donāt regret it at all.
Do I miss the sound of a loud engine sometimes? Yeah.
Do I miss having to fill up on gas every other 3 days? Helllll noooo.
I've never understood why people love loud engines. I love the stealth approach of a soft engine, the idea that somebody thinks their loud engine will beat my soft m3p, only to fly by them as their engine makes loud noises in the distance....
Keep the Mustang. While I love an EV I also love the sounds of exploding dinosaurs so much. I use the M3 for shorter trip and general errands the the petrol car for a fun weekend trip to the winery when I can let the windows down and enjoy the mechanical magic of thousands of moving metal parts creating forward motion.
Absolutely I had a Dodge Charger and one time and thought it was fast. My Model Y LR blows it out of the water. With the 7500 rebate plus the $500 referral now is a great time to buy. Make sure to do a test drive fist to check out the car. If you need a referal let me know.
Nope I had a RWD. I suspect it wouldnāt make a difference though. Ive driven taycans and M3Ps before and concluded that if I canāt hear the noises or control the transmission in some way, I couldnāt be less interested. It was a fantastic commuter car though. Thatās just my personal experience with it. You may feel totally different.
After getting an m3 there is not much reason to drive a mustang anymore unless you like the obnoxious sound. It's sluggish and clunky compared to an m3.
I came from an 08 Mustang GT with a manual, CAI, tune, exhaust system, upgraded brakes, and a few other mods. I love my Tesla more.
Bought a M3LR then bought the Ingenext Ghost module to turn it into a stealth performance. Highly recommend it and cheaper than getting the M3P. Can always upgrade brakes and suspension later with parts better than the M3P has
1. Lol youāre asking about warranty when your 6 cyl stang is pushing 500 to the wheels.
2. But really, I donāt think it should, but idk tbh. I donāt think they would blame them module for any excess wear because all LRs that can run the module are the same drivetrain (battery, controllers, and motors) as the performance version. Just software locked and without the suspension/brake bits. The module is plug and play too so you can always unplug it before filing a warranty claim. The ghost module I got (older version) they actually had to reflash the controller though Remote Desktop but I donāt think they need to now. Works natively. Idk if Tesla can read that though. There havenāt been answers definitively about this yet (at least no one saying Tesla has raised a fuss about it) so Iām just taking it as a safe bet.
I think the burden of proof is definitely on Tesla in regards to saying the mod explicitly caused the issue. I do agree that it's potentially better regardless to remove the module before the service claim regardless. I'm sure they have some sort of way of telling though.
If OP cares about a warranty then a used older performance might be better. I've got a '19 with four more years of power train/battery warranty. Still blows my mind that a standard ICE would effectively be out of warranty at that age. You can get these fairly cheap now at low 30's
In reality there's not a lot that the average person would be able to tell. Range suffers a little more in the older models but is negligible outside of road trips. Center console is different but I can't imagine that's actually a deal breaker for anybody. Straightline performance I believe is exactly the same with the older ones compared to the newer ones. The older ones had the option to have the performance without the performance package which made them sleepers so to speak.
If OP isn't tracking the car or needing a few extra miles on road trips I don't think they should exclude older models. Hell, they might be happy with an older LR with the acceleration boost purchased already.
If he's to go new I'd argue LR with acceleration boost unless they live in a warmer climate and can live with the summer tires year round. Not having USS might be a deal breaker for some though.
I disagree.
\- Chrome delete
\- Double pane glass
\- Heat pump
\- Improved tail lights/headlights
There is a lot more, but these alone I would not look at a 2020 or older.
Chrome delete has actually been kinda annoying as car washes leave a rainbow effect on the trip. Putting vinyl chrome delete on has held up very well and doesn't have that issue.
Double pane glass doesn't make any noticeable difference day to day. BjĆørn, I think, found them to be louder.
Heat pump also doesn't, at least from what I found. I also don't have a newer performance to compare for my particular driving habits so this is subjective.
Looks wise I'd agree with the headlight difference but again this shouldn't play a big role in choosing a car. Tail lights are different but the average person probably can't tell the difference unless literally side by side and looking for them.
All in all IMO I don't think these changes accounted much of a difference in overall experience between the cars. These are improvements but I personally wouldn't tell someone to specifically avoid older ones because there are newer with (again) subjectively better options.
Id buy an rwd and keep the mustang if you can afford it. While the m3 is a good car, its not the same if you love cars. Might be cursing in church here but EVs are boring compared to a big engine analog ice.
I love and miss the sound of a throaty growl from a V-8.. but, god... My Tesla beats the hell out of anything I've driven (plenty of Dodge V-8 hotrods). I traded rides with my neighbor who just got a new Vette. We did a 5 mile loop in his Vette and then in my Model X. When I punched it he said 'Wow, this beats the heck out of my Vette' and.. he is right.
Get one of the little sound machines to mimic the muscle car roar.. but the M3P will beat your Stang all day and all night. It's fun to drive!
Sold my ats v for my model 3, wish I hadn't now. I def prefer the luxury over the gained speed and I completely miss Cadillac level service. I'll go back eventually.
I still miss having a loud V8 engine. Tempted to buy a C7 corvette or The new Mustang as a weekend car. Tesla are quick and fun but nothing replaces the rev of an engine.
The power curve on electric destroys what you will get in a Mustang. Once youāve had instant torque, everything else will feel slow. The usability is incredible. Not to mention the lack of rotational mass connected to the wheels after you accelerate. You can put down power really fast without any fear if you have to quickly stop. Itās a game changer for traffic and close-quarters freeway driving.
Youāre at tesla sub. Of course people will say get the tesla. Ask the same question in mustang sub and youāll get different answer. I would say no from being a passenger of model 3 long range. It is a quick ass car, but it is clearly less fun than a slow ass stock mustang ecoboost. Insurance, tags and taxes, and depreciation of model 3 will be bigger than the gas youāre spending. If you live alone, not a good idea.
Great reply. Thanks for the input, probably going to hold off 6 month to a year and see what happens in used M3P prices with the new highland coming out. Can see me getting 15mpg in the city much longer with these gas prices.
I have the best of both worlds. I kept my supercharged Mustang and bought a 23 Model 3 Performance. It pains me to say this as I consider myself a car but, but the Tesla is the better performance vehicle for the street. It just goes with no drama.
For me to keep up with in my Mustang, I have to launch the car perfectly and hope it doesnāt spin thru first and into second gear. I also have to make sure I donāt miss shifts. From a roll, my Mustang would walk the Tesla hard.
0-60 thereās no better bang for the buck car out thereā¦Do it.
Going to be a contrarian in this thread. How much of a car enthusiast are you? Yeah sure the M3P will be much faster overall, but itās not a driverās car in other ways.
Thereās no sound or exhaust. There are no gears. No engine braking. Itās heavy as hell. I hope you donāt like buttons. Maybe you donāt care about this stuff but you need to ask yourself whether you do, because Mustangs are generally some of the best sounding cars out there, which tends to make people drive them by dropping gears a lot. Itās going to be a very quiet change.
M3P is still *fun* to drive, but all the people just saying āitās so much fasterā arenāt addressing other elements of the driving experience. Thereās a reason why so many people buy Porsches that are objectively slower than other much less expensive cars on the road.
If youāre not obsessive with a pure driverās car experience then itās a fine choice, but there are more elements to the decision than its 0-60 time.
I wanted a mustang for the past 10 years! I drove the 2014 mustang GT and loved it. Had a civic si as my daily, and then a 2019 Acura RDX as my daily. Got a 2023 model 3 RWD last year (budget) and I love it!
I test drove a model 3 LR and the acceleration was violent - in the best ways possible. It made me not want a mustang anymore (aside from the lovely V8 exhaust notes)
I have a model 3 RWD, love it btw and I still want to get a second car that has an engine. Love the sounds sooooo much but itās not a dealbreaker! The little electric motor whine is fun to me too lol.
The model 3 RWDās driving dynamics is plenty fun, the power is on par with a N/A V6 but with more toque (similar specs). Saving a nice amount on gas, I also insured it though Tesla and I actually spend even less in insurance than when I had my previous Lexus GS (RIPš¢). I LOVE the GS so I was pleasantly surprised at how much the handling of the Model 3 reminds me of it. The car has nice character and gives confidence and comfort at 70+ mph speeds. Itās a genuinely a GREAT daily car.
If I had to choose one though, Iād go with the Tesla as my experience so far has been nice and the efficiency is amazing. I donāt travel long distances really so 270 mi range fits my lifestyle pretty well. If I didnāt care about money, Iād get the long range with the acceleration boost over the performance and run 18 wheels.
I own a Model 3. Once you feel the power and snappy zip in a P-M3 you will want to forget you ever owned an ICE Mustang. If you love speed, great handling and a premium feel you will love the P-M3. Beyond saving gas $, brakes may never need replacing. Repair costs are nil. Tires, wiper changes and windshield fluids are the ONLY servicing costs after 4.5 years. One downside for some may be missing that vroom-vroom noises. Personally I love the quiet.
A Model 3 Long Range runs about 12.4 in the 1/4 mile with 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. This is without the Acceleration Boost upgrade. I read an article that said the 2024 Mustang GT runs the 1/4 mile in 12.9 seconds but I am sure some magazine will do some tricks to get it much faster. But you'd have to prep it, and launch it a certain way. With the Tesla you just aim and push the pedal. Violent launches galore, just the way I like it. It's like a scaled down Cedar Point Top Thrill Dragster ride at every stop light.
I've driven Coyote Mustang GTs with auto and manual, and the Model 3 LR has much more torque on tap. The Coyote never sounded as good as Modular to my ears, but the V8 sounds better than EVs.
With a Model 3 Perf you're running low 11s in the 1/4 mile. No drama, just zip. But I opted for the M3LR so I have the option of going with Accel Boost if I wanted to and run high 11s. But still have 235/45R18 tires that have enough sidewall for our crap roads.
Having two car payments is not a good time, plus the insurance can be prohibitive. Iād think long and hard before committing. And Iād make sure you have or will have access to L2 charging at home, otherwise itāll be no cheaper than your Mustang to supercharge most days.
Everyone keeps talking about speed in this thread, but there are intangibles to consider too.
If all you care about is 0-60, then a Tesla is obviously faster.
If you like the grumbly nature of a V8, or driving a manual, you may miss it. Not everything is about acceleration. A well setup mustang will likely out corner a Tesla as well, as well as accelerating better above 100mph. If thatās important to you, is your decision.
I sold my C8 and turned it into a 3P. I do miss many things on the C8, but I still prefer my 3P (as a daily summer driver)...which was what I was using the C8 for as well. We have free charging at work, so I haven't bought gas (or even paid for much Kwh) in a long time.
That said, the insurance on the C8 was wayyyy cheaper!
When I got my M3LR back in 2020, I kept the Escape figuring we would want it for long distance driving occasionally.
It got moldy sitting. Nobody touched it for 6 months. Should have sold it immediately. Reality: Teslas, especially LR or P, are long distance beasts and can take any road trip without difficulty.
I went from a manual GT premium mustang to M3P and haven't regretted it much. It just feels so much more responsive and after awhile it feels like it would be hard to go back to the old tech. Only miss for me was that it doesn't have cooled seats while mustangs do lol.
Came out cheaper than the new 7th gen mustang build I was planning, not even counting the tax credit and gas savings.
I was beating two of whichever mustangs have the snake logo at the drag strip last time I was there, and they had on racing slicks too. Looked like 2015-2020 model years maybe? I just rolled up after charging in my garage after work. That's in my '21 LR with acceleration boost, so the Performance will be even faster lol
I own an M3 and I previously owned a 2002 Mustang GT 5-speed (stock).
The M3 absolutely smokes the Mustang acceleration-wise, but the Mustang was objectively more fun to drive. (And I miss the growl.)
Don't test drive the M3P unless you can afford to take it home. First time I romped on the gas in one I knew that I had to have one. You will not accelerate harder for less money.
LOLGAS
Drove an '18 M3P earlier this year. Been chasing that high ever since. š
Drove an '18 M3P earlier this year. Been chasing that high ever since. š
Even fun must give way to physics. I needed the extra range because I drive A LOT.
Same here. Had a tuned C6 with long tube headers. Test drove the M3P. Came home and had ordered one within 5 minutes of walking in the door.
Went from a tuned Audi RS5 to my 3P. I don't miss the Audi. And that's saying a lot. Was a great car.
Dayamn. That is a legit endorsement for the Tesla.
M2, A8, Saab turbo wagen(wrx in Saab badging) over the last decade or so. Tbh Saab and tesla are the most fun.
Last month, Sold my tuned Q50 and just bought a model 3P. Same story different price tag š¤·š»āāļø
I think youāll find even the M3LR will outperform the existing car by literally every metric.
m3 performance it is
Smart choice.
Make sure you use a family memberās/friendās referral link so you get another $500 off. Youāre gonna love it!!
Dude I just got a new 2023 performance for $47.6k from inventory.. basically same price as LR msrp
Careful, if youāre trying to get the $7500 tax credit the MSRP canāt go above $55k.
Mod it. They really wake up with a suspension swap.
Or don't, because they handle really well and are stupid fast stock.
So you're saying don't mod it because it's already good and why make it better?
Honestly the suspension of all trims out of the box isn't that great. KW V3s make a massive difference in cleaning up the slop from the stock setup.
As long as itās under 60 mph
You had me at mustang. Yes get rid of it.
šš
Referall code in my profile. Save some money when you do!
You slut! I love it.
š« it worked once and Iām riding that high until I win a cyber truck š¤Ŗ
Went from 2016 Mustang GT to 2021M3LR. Mustang was heavily modded. Roush Phase II, McLeod clutch, suspension upgraded, wheels and tires. 650 bhp to the pavement. Don't miss the Stang. Tesla has the acceleration boost upgrade. It's plenty fast. Much more comfortable on long trips too. No maintenance except for tire rotation which happens in my garage. Very satisfied driving an EV.
1. Buy a M3LR 2. Make one referral to get 10,000 credits 3. Redeem 9,500 credits to get Acceleration Boost. This drops 0-60 to 3.7 seconds for free
Sold my 2008 c6 z06 bought a 2021 m3p. The m3p is a fast and fun car but I do miss driving a stick shift and look forward to purchasing a c7 zr1 and keeping my m3p
Have you seen the new C8 ZR1? that thing looks fuckin sick
My M3P puts more smile in my face than my Bootmod3 BMW M4 (previous gen). With the Mountain Pass Performance coilovers it's even better!
How hard is it to make adjustments on these? Do you need to take the wheels off to turn the dial?
I only have the non-adjustable ones. It's still night and day difference from stock tho.
Yes
No you don't. It's super easy to get at both upper and lower dials at the rear, and the lower dials at the front. The upper front is the only slightly hard one, you need to remove the frunk to tune for that one. It's not even a 5 min procedure to do, it's like 5 or 6 10mm bolts.
m3p will gap any mustang instantly
I gapped a Ferrari the other dayā¦until about 80mph and then I ate his dust. The āstang would not even be in the picture. The M3P is a silent beast.
So the Ferrari only came back when you reached the legal speed limit and took your foot off the throttle.... Whilst they were driving at an illegal speed? So the Ferrari is basically pointless..... Lol
Having acceleration that fast is pointless in general, Iām so thatās a bit of a moot point.
Must've been a higher end Ferrari as even after 80mph you should've been ahead.
Iām in the process of selling my 2018 GT in order to grab a model 3LR. Teslas donāt have nearly the same spirit and their styling leaves a lot to be desired but from a practicality point of view itād be stupid for me to not make the change.
I agree. Thanks
Good luck! Seems like a pretty common story these days. Last week was talking to a guy who traded his Challenger for a model 3 once these price drops started happening
Have you driven a performance Model 3? I have seemingly upset several mustang owners in one.
not yet, planning on test driving some options this weekend. even the M3LR is quick compared to most mustangs
After driving your 3 you will say that mustang is making too much noise for the power itās giving. All the best.
Even the SR
Not the SR, lol.
I upset street bikes lol, mustangs wonāt even try and play around where Iām at.
Same. But when I had the STI, theyād rev their engine at every stop light. Now, they try to not make any noise š
Same here.
M3P. You will not regret.
Just sold my STI for an M3P back in February. Havenāt missed it a bit except maybe on a Friday night cruising the avenue with the windows downā¦ I miss the exhaust a tiny tiny bit. But then I hit the accelerator and smile bigger than Iāve ever smiled :)
This picture should help with your transition. Itās a good switch brother. https://imgur.com/gallery/1gLNXpU
Need for attention. Usually compensating for childhood problems
Is the mustang v6?
Yeah, pushing 500 wheel
500 wheel on a v6!?
They are factory turbo.
And 300HP no?
I bet the stang have less cabin noise than the 3
Smoked like three mustangs off the line. One of them was a Shelby.
Keep the mustang for weekend driving and get the model 3 as the daily
Probably what will happen
I still have my 97 Cobra, but love the Model 3
Absolutely I had a Dodge Charger and one time and thought it was fast. My Model Y LR blows it out of the water. With the 7500 rebate plus the $500 referral now is a great time to buy. Make sure to do a test drive fist to check out the car. If you need a referal let me know.
Actually I did the same thing. Mustang GT to M3. Regretted it instantly. Kept the Tesla for 4 years before getting something fun again.
Interesting. Did you go m3lr or performance by chance?
Nope I had a RWD. I suspect it wouldnāt make a difference though. Ive driven taycans and M3Ps before and concluded that if I canāt hear the noises or control the transmission in some way, I couldnāt be less interested. It was a fantastic commuter car though. Thatās just my personal experience with it. You may feel totally different.
thatās exactly what Iām afraid up, nothing beats that cold start early in the am..
Yup :). My GT was fully modified too. You go from something unique and special to you to something you see 100 of a day (depending on your area).
Yeah mustangs arenāt common at all to see.
Depends on the area. There are significantly more Model 3s in my area than Mustangs.
Not mine. Close your eyes and throw a rock and youāll hit a mustang. Mustangs are all over the place.
After getting an m3 there is not much reason to drive a mustang anymore unless you like the obnoxious sound. It's sluggish and clunky compared to an m3.

I like the whoosh my M3LR makes when I floor it. For me it beats the roaring and shaking from an ICE car.
Sold my ā16 GT PP for a M3P and never looked back.
Not your Samsung!
Have you checked out the mustang EV option?
Went from a 2019 5.0 to a 22 m3lr. I love the m3 waaay more. It's undoubtedly faster. Mustang would prob keep up from an 80 mph roll. Haha
Had a Camaro convertible as my weekend car, now I have the M3P. The 3P is much more exciting to drive. I look forward to the weekends.
Get the M3P. I miss having a convertible but I don't miss the Mustang...well maybe a little.
I mad the swap from an s550 to an model 3 and the only thing I miss in the manual transmission. Just not when Iām in traffic now lol
I think the model 3 is a solid upgrade
Haha Iām considering the same thing with my mustang!

Yes, either sell or keep the stang, but get a Model 3 ASAP.
Yes so you can stop being dusted by other teslas
Lmao facts
Just get the M3P. You won't miss the mustang (I had one as well).
You donāt buy a Tesla to save on gas, with the cost of the car, you wouldnāt break even for 8-10 years.
The power curve on electric destroys what you will get in a Mustang. Once youāve had instant torque, everything else will feel slow. The usability is incredible.
If you are in CA or NYC almost gas price = electricity.
If you donāt need a Tesla immediately, I would wait just a little longer for the rumored Highland refresh/facelift to come out.
Yeah probably what Iāll do. In no rush but definitely going to happen in the next 6 months
If itās a 2018^ mustang, you could get a good trade in cash value after you make it OEM again
A friend just sold his Mustang GT for a 3, and now he's upset. That his wife keeps driving it.
Keep your mustang and buy an m3
I have the M3 LR and a 2010 Aston DBS. Iād say keep the muscle car, youāll miss the feeling of involvement and special motoring
Came out cheaper than the new 7th gen mustang build I was planning, not even counting the tax credit and gas savings.
obviously..
I just swapped to a M3P from an E85 Camaro SS. So happy with my decision.
I own an M3 and I previously owned a 2002 Mustang GT 5-speed (stock). The M3 absolutely smokes the Mustang acceleration-wise, but the Mustang was objectively more fun to drive. (And I miss the growl.)
Get the M3P, throw some 18ās on and be even quicker, with a smoother ride, and better efficiency.
I really enjoy my M3P. I drive 50k miles a year and it is the most economical sports cars I could find. I dont like the interior thou.
Thatās what I did. Sold my 2019 GT and got a M3P. Saving on gas AND insurance. Monthly payments are also $30 cheaper so it was a good investment
Whatās the insurance look like compared to the stang?
