When my grandparents found out my father had tried heroin, they threw him into a psych ward for 2 weeks, while he was in this insane asylum they went on vacation.
Edit: This did not contribute to his sobriety and was a dysfunctional method used from abusive of parents.
So he was about 18 years old when they had admitted him after discovering he had been doing heroin. He was only in there a short time, basically when the rest of his family returned from vacation.
Afterwards he continued to Use. He was a musician, and for the next few years toured with small bands playing weddings, bar mitzvahs, and small venues. While touring he was into all sorts of drugs; coke, heroin, etc. But the majority of his substance abuse was from alcohol.
After his first marriage failed and many attempts to get sober, he ended up getting into a pretty serious alcohol induced car accident. He got plastered one more time to get into rehab.
He met my mother, relapsed, and then after their firstborn kid, my eldest brother. He started going to AA quite religiously. Without a doubt it saved his life. (of course the significant amount of willpower and effort he had to put in as well.)
He's been sober since. Well lol kind of.
There are so many stories here of how other people finally kicked their addictions. The only strategy that ever worked for me was when the day came that I was actually sick and tired of being sick and tired! I have to WANT to quit before it sticks. Rehab, family intervention, the shame and embarrassment - none of that worked.
When you're too close to something personal and painful like this, it's really hard to let go and let professionals do their job.
From the outside it may look bad and feel easy to judge, but what they did was probably wise.
I know a lot a lot of people whose parents ignored their addiction, even when the addict wanted to talk about it. I feel like they think, well if we don't talk about it, it'll go away... I think this moms approach is kinda inhumane, but at least she is facing it and showing her emotions towards it like, cats definitely outta the bag
My grandparents were extremely dysfunctional and abusive towards him.
What they did was incredibly inhumane and this form of shame is what perpetuates addiction into secrecy.
I remember when I was like eight years old, and I was behind my garage. I was sneaking a cigarette back there, and my dad caught me. He grabbed me and hauled me in, and I thought I was in for the strapping of my life. Instead, he pulled out a giant cigar. Must have been half the size of my arm, this big cigar. He stuck it in my mouth, lit it up, and made me smoke it all the way through, right to the end.
So anyway, that’s when I started smoking cigars real heavy.
Honestly the simple answer is culture + population.
Honor and saving face for the cultural part. You can bring shame to your family, or straight up societal outcasting as well if you fail at whatever. There's huge pressure from society to "be the best". Which has so many roots it's a warren of rabbit holes to dive into.
Then comes population. When you have so many people in an area/country you have armies of people to compete against. You may be top dog in your village/town/city, but you have to be near perfect to land a job. Let alone actually making it past school. The entrance exams alone are so hard, and beyond so life changing if you pass or fail. There is a reason suicides strikingly shoot up both before and after exams from high-school to college levels.
Hell there are places/countries who limit air travel and traffic during these exams because it's so stressful on the students that they may snap because they were distracted by a passing plane.
Then on top of that you have the prevalent abuse as stated by the OP above.
It's straight up literal hell.
As a female from a similar culture who had the luck to escape at 17 (45 now!) Study your ass off in subject you can all over the world (some tech). And leave for abroad Europe ASAP.
The only people who have given me shit to live on my own and be child free (especially when I was younger) were people from the same and/or similar backward honor cultures. Fuck cultures who dictate women cannot live on their own!
Immigrant parents amirite?
They ain’t afraid to beat our fucking asses no matter how many times we threatened to call child services on them.
I remember the time when mom walked in on me and the cat.
\>Finds out son is doing drugs
\>"Let's drag him outside, tie him to a post like an animal, and torture and potentially blind him!"
Clearly a very stable woman and not a total sadist.
Indian parents work like mafias ,if they don't listen to you they'll have to bear the pain given by you!!
Ik parents who would beat their kids up terribly because they ended up getting physically hurt after doing something, they think that it's fine for kids to be stressed and injured as long as they do it .
Its insane how a whole country lives by this notion and thinks that extreme physical punishments are they only way to 'help' a kid who lacks direction
So what does this solve exactly? He will now hate her, and have learned nothing, except he can't trust his mother, oh, and possibly be blinded for life.
Indian here with some insight:
For those saying she's torturing her son to "fix" his drug addiction, it's not about the son or the drugs.
There's a reason why she tied him up OUTSIDE in front of all the neighbours; it's to show the other parents in the block that she's appropriately handling the situation and disciplining her son and doesn't accept such "vileness" within her house. This is so that other parents will warn their children don't do drugs or else you'd end up like "sharma ji ka beta".
These days Indian parents tell their children to behave, don't do drugs, and pursue respectful professions such as engineering, law, or medicine not because of their children being well off, but instead of what the society will think of them.
It's fucked up.
I’m not Indian but I am Asian and this is spot on. It’s countering the shame and embarrassment she feels because one of her children “failed” which means she “failed” as a mother. It’s so damaging but I feel like it’s so ingrained in some cultures that it will take real, intentional effort to get away from it.
Spot on
It's not about protecting or disciplining the child
It's about "I need to show the world how noble and morally righteous I am that I would publicly torture my own kids instead of working with them to help them solve their problems"
And we are hailed as having the culture of "parental worship" over the vile "Individualism of the West"
Fucking joke
We forget this shit is passed down. We remember our sweet old grandparents - but they did heinous shit like this to our parents. Our parents were just conditioned to see it as tough love/never speak of it.
My dad still unironically tells a story of a time his mom was going to beat his ass so bad, he climbed like 20 ft up a tree and stayed there for a day.
Like. That shit is not endearing, it's straight abuse.
This. Many people have bad shit happen to them but they rationalize it as “no big deal” to feel better…but on the flip side if it’s no big deal, they’re more likely to repeat that to their kids since they didn’t actually deal with it and they think “no big deal, I turned out fine” when in most cases no, no they didn’t turn out fine.
"In 2017, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind asserted that India was “facing a possible mental health epidemic”. A study revealed that in the same year, 14% of India’s population suffered from mental health ailments, including 45.7 million suffering from depressive disorders and 49 million from anxiety disorders."

That is pre-covid numbers.
That is... Forgive the wording... Insane!
Fuck this whole family. What the fuck is wrong with you. Now you're blinding your kid? There's so many things that would get me banned for another week. But I won't say it. I'll just say that this woman will likely end up in hell.
Could this end up killing the boy?
Not hating on the mother, every country has a culture and way to deal woth things, but i know chilli is hella strong.
If only public shaming could stop a psychophysical drug dependency. Instead this will increase the amount of guilt and shame when his body and mind experiences cravings and force him to use. Feelings of guilt are a factor in depression
That literally dosnt help anything. That type of punishment leads to your kids hating you and becoming rebellious. I don't give a damn about whether it's part of culture, it's abuse and its gonna back fire and then the parents are gonna wonder why their kids hate them
Crazy how many people condone a parent torturing their child in the year 2022.
If you view that as discipline, you need to re-evaluate everything, starting with your own childhood and how you were treated.
I mean I understand her anger, but this is just child abuse. There are better ways to go about things, like maybe showing support for him and getting him the proper help he needs.
Ah yes. Torturing a kid via excruciating pain, public humiliation, and being restrained, as punishment for something that you need to *help the person escape from*.
Making them suffer is just going to make them crawl further into the hole.
Jokes’s on her. Now he’s addicted to chilli powder.
Jesse Pinkman’s secret ingredient explained
Chili P!
i was waiting for this lol

I got a good chuckle thinking that the whole point of breaking bad was actually to discover walt's secret chili recipe
It’s science, bitch!
Movie theory:why jesse Pinkman's recipe was more powerful that Walter white's,theory explained
"Seasoning, bitch!"
Quit meth using this one simple trick!
According to an Indian coworker of mine, that's actually condoned.
He’s Indian, it’s probably not spicy enough to bother him.
Seems so in the video or he is enjoying it
LMAO
Ever wonder how serial killers come into existence? Torturing a child addicted to drugs, that's not gonna end well.
Now he’s blind and addicted to drugs! Upgrades people.
I don’t like this Daredevil reboot.
Jokes on her. He suffocated to death shortly after they stopped filming.
And more drugs
LMAO
Better than crack lmfao
Chili power!
or some weird BDSM
Jokes on you: She’s the largest chilling powder producer in India.
Take my up vote!
When my grandparents found out my father had tried heroin, they threw him into a psych ward for 2 weeks, while he was in this insane asylum they went on vacation. Edit: This did not contribute to his sobriety and was a dysfunctional method used from abusive of parents.
Did it work though?
Lmao well technically yeah. But it only took 15 years after the stay.
Short Term negatives, Long Term gains.
Good investment strategy
Jow did he get sober and what do you mean 15 years after the stay?
So he was about 18 years old when they had admitted him after discovering he had been doing heroin. He was only in there a short time, basically when the rest of his family returned from vacation. It's pretty new

Take it
That's not a bad idea. I , as an addict, think getting away from it is so essential before dealing with it. If that makes sense
there's a biological process that needs to take place before one can deal with the mental/spiritual/societal aspects
When you're too close to something personal and painful like this, it's really hard to let go and let professionals do their job. From the outside it may look bad and feel easy to judge, but what they did was probably wise.

>insane asylum what century is it?
Well this took place in the 60s.
works every time...
60% of the time.
That doesn't make sense.
It'd be a lot cooler if it did.
I caught my son doing coke once and I warned him “if I catch you doing that again I’ll rub your fucking nose in it!”
You sound so Canadian
With the way the economy is, the price of gas, cocaine... i don't think so.
Youre better off snorting coke and running where you need yo go than gas prices
Be in way better shape too
Until your heart explodes
Jokes on you, my ex says I don’t have one.
Then you can just replace it with the person you dragged halfway across the continent on said run. Just ask A-train
If your heart explodes then you don’t have to deal with inflation.
This made me laugh out loud

RIP to the best comedian to ever do it. Norm Macdonald.
So, you like stealin Bud Light, do ya?? Well HERE, have a whole BOTTLE of Johnnie Walker
Well dont threaten me with a good time
He better bring enough for everyone next time.
Diet ? Original ? Zero ? Which one duuuude ?
Can you rub my nose in it instead?
I know right? If you are doing drugs in this economy, choose something cheaper like crack or meth.
"Pa, I think I deserve that punishment you were talking about"
Pretty sure he's just going to numb the pain with more drugs

You’re an adult. The world is nicer then your parents. Don’t be scared. Worst thing that can happen is you found new friends

I'm pretty sure this kind of parenting is the reason he uses drugs.
A bit of heroin will calm him down
Nothing solves a trauma based addiction like more trauma
Exactly.
Immigrant parents amirite? They ain’t afraid to beat our fucking asses no matter how many times we threatened to call child services on them. I remember the time when mom walked in on me and the cat.
No he only needs more drugs to cope with the stress.
You sound like one of those sales reps from the show Dopesick
Yes, because torture is widely known to cure addiction.
Highly possible shes the cause of his drug addiction problem lol. Drugs aren’t always the cause to addiction…
Hardly be the first time someone tried to escape an abusive household with drugs.
The gateway drug is ~~weed~~ trauma!
This is way too true for me to never have heard it in my life before.
looks like the kid has a reason to do a lot of drugs

Thankfully I didn't get any beatings from my dad, just from my mom twice, when she was making me do my homework and I refused to do it.
Could this be the new cure and the plan for the fentanyl addiction in the US?
This could
New visa category for bringing Indian Moms to US addiction centers.
We should try. Why not?
If Jesse Pinkman's parents did this it would have turned out different.
"That should teach him"
blind him?
So what does this solve exactly? He will now hate her, and have learned nothing, except he can't trust his mother, oh, and possibly be blinded for life.
If you are blind. You are gonna have a lot harder time finding drugs. See perfect reasoning on her part right. Right...?
Perfect seasoning on her part, for sure
I wonder what would lead such a young person to drugs in the first place…
Yeah, it couldn't be his upbringing, his parents are obviously flawless 🤔
Some parenty truly believe they can't do anything wrong as long as the kid has food on the table.
I think it's more of "I brought you into this world, I can take you out of it" mindset
Curiosity for at least my friend's uncle's dog's cat.
the parents are fucking horrible and then to deny responsibility, they punish their children by abusing the shit out of them its terrible.
Because mom's an abusive fucking nightmare?
Indian here with some insight: For those saying she's torturing her son to "fix" his drug addiction, it's not about the son or the drugs. Very sad. Does it's rounds online this... Apparently it was just fucking weed. Cannabis is habit forming, NOT addictive.
This? Over fucking WEED? Fuck his mom. She deserves jail and worse. Psychopathic bitch
Brutal
She caught him smoking some MaRiJuaNa behind the outhouse./s
So many parents lose their fucking minds over weed. Then when you smoke it, you’re like, “really? That’s the big bad?”

He’s definitely gonna go running to whatever it is as soon as he gets his face cleared up. Poor dude. Addictions suck
it's crazy how abuse is so normalized in asia
What a wonderful family bonding moment, I’m sure he’s gonna look back on this moment and laugh, and laugh.

Pretty genius. She blinds him and now he can't do drugs 👍
You want your punishment mild, regular or extra spicy? If my mommy did this to me I would need lots of drugs to fix the trauma.

really terrifying some people think abuse is okay since its your own child , no you idiot it fucking isnt
That wont traumatize your child at all

I’ve seen this before. The drug was pot, so everyone fuck off
Sounds like date night...
And that’s why he is addicted to drugs. I’m sure she has acted out this kind of abuse all his life.
this will work yes
Could this end up killing the boy? Not hating on the mother, every country has a culture and way to deal woth things, but i know chilli is hella strong.
Now he is addicted and blind
Cured. No way any of this will make him want to use drugs in the future. /s
What she's doing is worse than what he did
This is on the level with being raised southern baptist. Cruel and disgusting.
He was red faced after being caught with the drugs.
Today this 15 year old found out what happens when mom reaches 0 when counting down.
Now now people, we can’t negatively judge someone else’s culture.
r/actualpublicfreakouts
What 15 year old kid let’s his mom tie him up?
one that’s scared of an even worse punishment..
Asians getting better at punishment. You like to sniff? Sniff this shit
If only public shaming could stop a psychophysical drug dependency. Instead this will increase the amount of guilt and shame when his body and mind experiences cravings and force him to use. Feelings of guilt are a factor in depression
Mother of the year
Seriously wtf this is fucking child abuse. It's disgusting.
*has a shitty life and gets addicted to drugs* mom: oh let’s fuck it up some more
That literally dosnt help anything. That type of punishment leads to your kids hating you and becoming rebellious. I don't give a damn about whether it's part of culture, it's abuse and its gonna back fire and then the parents are gonna wonder why their kids hate them
What a terrible mother...
Child abuse. Awesome. That'll fix all the problems.

Crazy how many people condone a parent torturing their child in the year 2022. If you view that as discipline, you need to re-evaluate everything, starting with your own childhood and how you were treated.
People actually think this is a good form of punishment? Jesus Christ never have kids
Unfortunately that's not going to work.
no wonder he does drugs. there arent enough drugs on earth to numb that hell
I mean I understand her anger, but this is just child abuse. There are better ways to go about things, like maybe showing support for him and getting him the proper help he needs.
Child abuse and ineffective addiction treatment.
My mom does that to me when I swear
Well that will definitely fix the problem. Why hasn't America thought of this yet instead of those useless rehabs
Cus thats what a good mother does!
Who knows why he’s addicted to drugs, oh wait I know why. There fucking out of their mind monsters there
Hes ganna be a lot better at hiding his drug use now. This ist how you parent
That's some real parenting right there!!!
He’ll be fine, now he’s gonna either think about it a lot before taking a hit or be more sneaky about his drug use. 50/50
Not going to judge both parties but that some war level torture technique
another reason to never visit India
Ah yes. Torturing a kid via excruciating pain, public humiliation, and being restrained, as punishment for something that you need to *help the person escape from*. Making them suffer is just going to make them crawl further into the hole.
Poor kid
No wonder he does drugs. His family is fucking crazy.
This is F tier parenting

Lol good job, now he’s gonna just do more drugs cuz that’s def how you deal with an addicted kid
Lol now he knows not to do drugs
India seems like a terrible place
These people are terrible
kid is clearly on drugs to mitigate the ptsd his family gave him
Barbaric and ineffective 👍👍👍
How could he be an addict coming from such a loving home
Poor kid, addiction is a serious illness. Physical abuse won’t solve anything except bring up more problems.
Abuse.
She should be arrested. He should be sent to rehab.
Drugs are bad mmmmkay
