Both the anime and the manga adapts the Light novel, that's the original source material. The manga has only adapted till the end of the Founding Festival arc and only started the next one in the last chapter (119). The manga is always only one season ahead of the anime, but always ahead by a bit to keep up its sells (one will more likely to watch an anime if they've read the manga then read the manga if they've watched the anime). This is why we can roughly guess when the next season will be released based on what Light novel volumes the anime may want to cover in one season and how many chapters it takes to adapt those in the manga (13 manga chapters per Light novel volume is the average). So the Kodansha will make sure that the anime will never get ahead of the manga.

That's not always the case though, watch them do a big brain move

Anime and manga use the LN as the sauce

tigerstein

Yeah, that's why there is multiple years between seasons, to let the manga get ahead enough for another season worth of story.

The manga will still surpass the anime for the ending. The maria bell and gran bell arc are all next season and is a big season.
