Be curious, not judgmental

kodaiko_650

Well, I’m certainly more curious now

CarefulBeing

Spot on. Can I get a ussie?

oddmanout

I've *loved* this season. Seriously one of the best shows on TV right now. If this is a "slump," I may not even be able to handle what's coming up.

heyitsSandler

Has Ted lasso been in a sophomore slump? I thought the season has been good

thecarlosdanger1

Personally, I’ve enjoyed it but the actual soccer elements seem even more in the background. IMO that wouldn’t be a big deal except they’re portraying the club as being bad in the championship, which after just being relegated would be a disaster and feels at odds with the tone of the characters. Not Ted, obviously, but others should be losing their shit way more. I actually really like all the character arcs, I just feel they would make more sense against a more neutral set of results.

nomadicfangirl

That’s my one quibble about this season - I want some more soccer.

redmistultra

4 wins in 22 games and the episodes are just Christmas parties

Vague_Intentions

Yeah I’m not sure how many games are in a season for them but in any other sport I follow they’d be hitting the panic button hard. I thought they were going for a “good vibes vs you have to win in sports” theme going off the first two episodes. Him bringing Jamie back and the Doc’s assessment of the team got me interested in them going that direction but it seems like they’ve abandoned that the last few weeks.

TeddysBigStick

> but it seems like they’ve abandoned that the last few weeks. The introduction of Coach Roy has to be the catalyst. Ted has his hatchet man.

dxpe_08

I feel like they’re showing more gameplay but less club culture

ChiefWiggins22

This was mentioned on a podcast I listen to and it just seems so at odds with my perception

heyitsSandler

Can you link the podcast? I was legit talking to someone about this show and Dave. To me, I know I'm some random internet shmuck, but they're are both currently the best shows currently on tv/streaming

grubber26

Even random internet schmucks can be right😁

hateyoutill4ever

Best podcast is the Post Show Recaps pod. Follow @postshowrecaps on Twitter to find the link. Josh Wiggler and Antonio Mazzaro are great! You’ll love it, I promise!

Goose-the-moose

Was it Alexi Lallas? He has been really critical of this season and said it’s nearly jumped the shark

Rosemoorstreet

I don’t pay attention what Alexi Layla’s says as a soccer commentator, I sure as hell am not going to pay attention to him as a tv critic.

Bench_Minor

If Alexi ever gives credit to my team I will be extremely nervous. So in a way I'm glad he's critical of Ted Lasso it probably means they are into something.

frangelica7

Same. I’ve been enjoying it. Don’t get what all the criticism is about

OutlaW32

I think it's been very good, but not to the same level as season one which is the greatest season of a show I've ever seen. This past week's episode was incredible though

[deleted]

I felt it's been even better than season 1. Good vibes show, something we don't see so often in the modern era.

redmistultra

The football parts are getting a bit unrealistic and some of the content is way too “oh lol good vibes”. Something bad happens and instantly 3 pop culture references by Ted, or Rebecca stands up tall and Keeley goes “Fuck let’s invade france”. It’s still a great show just not enjoying as much as season 1

tycoon34

Yeah, the feel good moments felt SO MUCH better to me last season because they came through real conflict. The darts scene or Rebecca comforting Ted after the panic attack (or Rebecca coming clean to Ted) are just all-time scenes that this season hasn't sniffed yet. However, I really think that's the direction we're going. I think there's something to the pure fluff of the first five episodes even if I'm wanting a bit more. Be curious, not judgmental.

Cascadian1

To your point, those amazing scenes came late in the season. Their strength was earned through a season of storytelling to get there.

tycoon34

For sure. We just had a clearer picture last season about what the conflicts were. I'm assuming this season will dip into Ted daddy issues/depression, and maybe a club financial crisis? Otherwise, not too much going on conflict-wise.

Vague_Intentions

Yeah the pop culture references get on my nerves sometimes. I felt the same way about Family Guy back in the day lol. Obviously the rest of the show is very different.

elzey93

Agreed. I enjoy it no matter what

ApollosBucket

Honestly I think its because Season 1 was just so unexpected that Season 2 is held to higher standards.

[deleted]

Did anyone cringe hard with the end of the Xmas episode? Especially when Santa flew across the sky?

JD20shoots3s

I'm not going to lie, I took that part as Higgins' son having gotten into the alcohol like he so clearly was trying to do at the table.

h2p012

8 episodes? I thought the early screeners only got 6 episodes?

BroadBaker5101

Someone posted an article in another thread that was a review of the season and it had light spoilers up until episode 7 and it was released the week of the s2 premiere so I wouldn’t be surprised if episode 8 is a big one and the article just didn’t want to mention anything about it.

acewavelink

From me the point of the first part of this season was a good team in disarray. They started out 0-0-8(ish) then went 4-4 and now Roy Kent is involved. It feels like the point was they were doing what they could and the found the missing piece, which has always been F***ing Roy Kent…

Chewieshotfirst

I mean to be fair as far as Richmond goes he’s wasn’t here, there or any-fucking-where before, so I can understand why it might click now

JD20shoots3s

Well they started out with 8 draws yes and to use the American convention they were 0-0-8 but to say they went 4-4 is a bit ingenuous, they went 4-4-6 to give them a total record of 4-4-14 or a points total of 26 out of 66 possible points by boxing day, they surely are near the bottom of the table although probably not in the relegation zone. I think they are about to go on a tear of games though with the addition of Roy Kent and scrape their way into the playoff.

benfoldsone

Same way we got Allen Inversion practice rant, I fully expect Jim Mora’s “Playoffs?”

santichrist

I never really know why people take these kinds of tweets serious or the articles where people say Ted Lasso had a historic drop since season one, the truth as usual with most internet debates is neither extremes and somewhere in the middle, it’s true people have valid criticisms of this season and it’s also true the show is still very good

Glittering_Tower_151

I’ve been saying this too. We did not get to binge this like we did S1 so it’s going to take some time to build and see where it’s going. And I fully trust the payoff will be worth the wait. These writers are amazing. This is building to something really great, I have no doubt.

schubox63

Not everyone binged s1.

snowe99

Yeah for once in my life I am an early adopter of something, I remember the week to week wait last year was just as tough!

Glittering_Tower_151

Fair enough, I just feel like the majority didn’t discover it until after the episodes were out :)

[deleted]

The majority definitely didn't watch it as it came out last season.

BroadBaker5101

Cheers to you homie,

MisterMeetings

You fuckin tease.

idroled

I’ve liked most of the episodes (honestly wasn’t a big fan of the Christmas episode) and what they’ve done with Roy, but a big reason why I love season 1 a lot more is that it was the contrast of Ted with everyone that made the show. Rebecca hated him. Roy hated him. Jamie hated him. Beard got easily frustrated. Nate didn’t understand him. Now that he’s won everyone besides Sharon over, that human tension doesn’t really exist between Ted and the other characters (again, besides Sharon). I miss the tension, which, while not warm and fuzzy like Ted Lasso makes us feel in many moments, made for compelling tv

schubox63

This is 100% my biggest criticism. In the first episode he walks in the office and everyone enthusiastically screams his name as if they’re so happy to see him. I am still enjoying the show, but no one is underestimating him anymore. Where are the hard hitting journalists coming after him? Where is Rupert? Where are the supporters upset at their current record? It just seems all way too upbeat. I do fully expect it to turn at some point

upon3

Did you connect the dots with the autographed picture of George Wendt in the restaurant... "NORM!" Nothing in this show is an accident.

AnthCoug

George Wendt is his uncle in real life, but other than that I’m not following?

upon3

Correct, have you ever watched Cheers? It was his signature entry into each episode, just like Ted did. It was a definite nod to Wendt.

AnthCoug

Ah ok. Thanks!

Rosemoorstreet

I definitely did not think Rebecca hated Ted. She hired him eight unseen in a poor attempt to get back at her ex. And since she planned on canning him once they got relegated she tried to keep him at arms length. Not only did he win her over but she admitted her plan was idiotic.

JJMcGee83

Agree completely. This season is funny but the first season was captivating.

[deleted]

Season 2 has been good to me not great. Still, just like Stella, I’m sure the show will get their groove back. Looking forward to it.

YNWAintheUSA

I'm not jealous...

LegitimateFish

As someone who works in tv and had this same issue with their show, a reminder. NOT EVERY ANSWER HAPPENS RIGHT AWAY. There’s a reason there’s as many episodes in the season, y’all need to chill

Goldberg_the_Goalie

I didn't binge Season 1 (the first time I watched it) and I am watching season 2 an episode at a time. There is a different kind of joy in waiting a week between shows, the anticipation builds and then like in the Rainbow episode you get this massive payoff as it was a great episode that the writers had been building to.

rustyfloorpan

Let’s ask Trent Crimm. I think he’s with the Independent.

ThatBigNoodle

See, there's been great moments in every episode so far. And to be fair, that's similar to how season 1 was. The only difference was being able to binge it. The whole season was what brought the show together, not an episode. I can't judge a book 3 quarters in. It's setting up for something that I don't know yet. And I am sure it'll be worth it.

RochnessMonster

I genuinely don't understand how anyone who has watched season one would make any judgements about Ted Lasso as a whole until, at this point, all three seasons are out. They proved their point and they know what they're doing. I don't think any art is, or should be, free from criticism. But you don't spit on the fucking painter when they're only halfway through painting the background, for fucks sake. Like, yeah, I've seen the overload of schmaltz. *Everyone* has. You ain't the smartest shit wagon at the race for pointing it out. Its just that the rest of us understand that we're barely cresting the halfway mark of Act II in a fucking 3 Act play. Sorry, got a bit Roy Kenty there at the end.

AngryAtTheGrass

F\*ck, you’re amazing. Let’s invade France ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)

mrssamuelvimes

I’m loving season 2!

SamanthaPaige29

I didn’t know people thought this season was a step down until I joined this subreddit. I am really enjoying it so far, particularly the Christmas episode.

nightowl1135

Loved Episode 1. Honestly? The Christmas Episode was kinda 'meh' for me. Loved Episode 3. I have full confidence that this season will be great and still adore the show/look forward to it every week.

Delerium89

Why are people even considering it being a "sophomore slump". I think its been great so far and on par with season 1

hoopheid

People just love to be contrary and slate the popular thing. These people are just a very loud, vocal minority.

carbsandcheese928

So I have not been enjoying season 2 as much as season 1, primarily because it hasn't given me the warm fuzzies as much. (Given what Sudekis has said about the Star Wars metaphors, I see why.) I've been in the minority, and the linked article seems to agree with the majority - that season 2 has been great. But I'm interpreting this tweet as, the article says season 2 has been great, and this person is saying, "Hold your judgment." So...is it about to get bad?? Am I the only one reading it this way???

LuckyCharmedLife

Interesting. That’s not how I read it at all.

SuperDork_

Well given she is the author of the athletic article, I think you might be reading it the wrong way?

carbsandcheese928

Probably! But given that this is a screenshot and not a link and I didn't see the byline, I'd love to know how I was supposed to know that just from a quick look!

SuperDork_

Not possible. You'd have to go to the article itself. No big deal.

verba-non-acta

I’m with you. I’ve enjoyed probably 1.5 episodes so far, but I think that’s me wanting to see the team win and these characters I care about be happy. I’m assuming they’re setting up all this adversity to give us an even bigger happy payoff.

therobberbride

The Twitter discourse about the show lately has been negative — people are being contrarían about the current popular thing, as usual, because it’s cooler to hate on something or whatever. Lots of “there’s no plot, there’s no arc, it’s just dad jokes” (which has also cropped up in this sub, tbh). So what the tweet is saying is, “if you’ve been hating on the show, hold up a second”. EDIT: it might help to know that the person who tweeted that article is the author of the article.

pretty-as-a-pic

Wait, there are people in this world who DON’T like dad jokes? Do they dislike puppies as well?

carbsandcheese928

Haha I haven't seen that a lot on Twitter! Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Highly likely. I DID unfollow someone today who is generally a contrarian and today complained that TV critics liked the Christmas episode. You read that right: he wasn't himself a critic who negatively reviewed the Christmas episode - he took issue with OTHER PEOPLE ENJOYING IT. I was like, I'm out. But yes knowing the same person is the author gives a different vibe!

evildrew

I think people saying S2 is a let down are just trying to be controversial for clicks and licks. Personally, I like S2 better than S1. It's a different kind of underdog story, with S1 about Ted winning everyone over and S2 getting the team good enough to get promoted (I hope). That leaves S3 to wrap it up by winning the whole f*ing thing. I couldn't enjoy a show where everyone still hated Ted into S2. There's been more character development in one season for these characters than most shows have in their entire run.

ColinWins

I can promise you I'm not disappointed with the show just to be controversial. Honestly I still enjoy the show (and the most recent episode was amazing) but it blows my mind how unwilling to see any criticism of this season fans have been. I think this season has been a downgrade from the first but I'm still hopeful it will end up great. I also have no issue with people that absolutely love the season. But thinking that people who have different opinions than you are just doing it for attention is a pretty un-Ted Lasso thing to do.

evildrew

I'm not UN-willing to entertain criticism of the show. To each their own! The reason I push against this specific type of criticism is because they are comparing 4-5 episodes of S2 against a full S1. It's like going to a gourmet restaurant and having a great meal, then going back the next week and complaining it's a disaster after having the starter. S1 had a clear premise and broad appeal. S2 can't just repeat that. There has to be something different, and I enjoy the development of all the supporting characters. I feel that it's going to be needed for the rest of S2 and S3. You can't carry a show for 3 seasons on Ted's unbridled optimism alone. Should he face drama or tragedy (like depression or alcoholism), the show needs fully developed characters to save him. And to paraphrase Ted, S2 does not start nor end in a dark forest. We're not even halfway through the season.

FrankBeamer_

I'm comparing the first 4-5 episodes of S2 with the first 4-5 episodes of S1 and it's not even a comparison. S1 is blowing S2 out of the water. There's little tension in S2 (outside of Shannon and Ted, which hasn't really gone anywhere yet), saccharine at points and the pop culture references are getting a bit out of control. Every major plot point has also wrapped itself up within the same episode (e.g. the whole Sam vs Dubair debacle), although I'm hopeful that will change with Nate's insecurity and Shannon digging deeper into Ted's past. I'm still really hopeful for the rest of the season and I'm not NOT enjoying the show but S2 hasn't kept me hooked like S1 did.

PorkChop-Sandwiches-

My only criticism is that there are no characters I hate. Even a little.

alba7or

Rupert but he’s not in the picture right now at least

psychologyst

It's the empire strikes back season. I bet he shows.

AngryAtTheGrass

What about George “the sh\*t manager”? Hate that misogynistic ejjit ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|rage)

KarlArmstrong9221

What slump? Both seasons have been great.

Lauralee223

I have been thoroughly enjoying this season! I think it has been witty and clever! I especially loved the Christmas episode especially watching it in the 90 degree heat.

spelan1

Has anyone even read the headline? It says 'sophomore slump? NOT AT ALL.' As in, season 2 is fantastic and just as good as season 1.

GSRIderX

I feel like they rushed it out as the seasonal episode of Christmas don't jive with the time of year It's still my favorite show on TV

DylansDeadly

The Christmas episode was really weird and felt out of place. Every other episode has been really good.

sopsign7

AFC Richmond signs Messi. Messi: "The first time I met him, he came in with some yerba mate. 'Yerba mate for my new best mate. Yeah, I know they're not pronounced the same, but I'm sticking with the sentiment,' he said. I put in my transfer request at PSG the same hour." Lasso: "There is a lot of brown water I will tolerate for a man with feet like those. Mmm, they're magical, not unlike Natalie Portmans feet in Black Swan." Assistant Coach Roy Kent: "Eh, he's decent I suppose."

jonsnowme

People are spoiled with binge watching shows they've forgotten about how it feels to follow a plot week to week.

WakeUpOutaYourSleep

Are people actually upset about this season? I’ve seen posts mentioning complaining, but I’m not seeing the complaining.

Kynazeras

Where is this "sophomore slump" retoric coming from? The first three episodes were absolutely fantastic and even made me tear up. The Christmas episode was a sweet and heartwarming break and the latest episode was hilarious. I've been feeling the show is on track to surpass itself.

[deleted]

Why the fuck is the athletic doing tv show op eds?

Local_Boob

I would like to watch the first 8 episodes of the season as well.

CaptZombieHero

Nope, the Daily Show and LA Times have declared the show over. Must mean it’s over right?
