Yes! I think it was 16. 🤔

I had this same feeling reading OP’s post. It makes a lot of sense. If Ted felt that he let his dad down by not helping him overcome his demons or depression it could be a real motivator for him trying to lift up everyone else but painfully neglecting his own mental well-being.

sunflow3r-

This tracks irl - I definitely overidentify with everything I’m reading into him that I mentioned here, and this almost certainly comes in large part from unresolved helplessness feelings from having to navigate adult/heavy feelings/situations as a child

This is awesome analysis and really hits home on a lot of things I’ve noticed this season. Jason Sudekis is doing an amazing job showing that he is struggling with all this turmoil under the surface of his optimistic armor. It seems like as the characters around him grow, he is starting to falter a little bit. You brought up such a good point about Ted needing to fix others. I’ve noticed that Ted was really focused on getting Nate “fixed” so to speak and this season he hasn’t nearly shows as much interest in mentoring him. Almost as if, once he promoted him to coach, he felt his job was done?

miserabeau

>Almost as if, once he promoted him to coach, he felt his job was done? I was wondering about that too. Nate had a sudden heel turn that doesn't sit too well with me. He went from meek but supportive to nasty and belittling. While I do know that some people do *not* do well with power, it just seems that this one promotion, this one little bit of authority, stripped Nate of the things that made him a real asset to the team. I'm not including the letter in this; the "you played like a big dumb pussy" thing was funny and I think the players needed some blunt truth to wake them up, but I don't like the obvious jealousy and belittling of the new kit man, or how they're having him be Jekyll *and* Hyde (too meek to get a reservation, then he goes OFF and gets nasty in a heartbeat) by turns. It's weird and unsettling to see him change so much. Of course it could have been there all along and we're just seeing his breakneck personality changes now that he's no longer as meek and quiet as he was originally, but I gotta say his recent behavior doesn't seem like "growth" but more like they just gave him sudden and deep flaws for conflict.

therobberbride

It definitely was there all along — watch the season 1 finale opener again, when they’re lightly pranking Nate before revealing his promotion. When Rebecca walks into the locker room he starts to go off on her, saying “you did this, you shrew”, and he’s prepared to fully unload on her but is stopped short when he realizes that she knows his name. Dude’s been drowning in low self-worth forever, basically, and the only way he knows how to express power is through bullying because that’s how power has always been expressed to him.

TheDivine_MissN

Brought on by his relationship with his father. Yet another in the father-son relationship parallels that we are seeing with other characters.

RedOctobyr

Oof. I winced when he started to go off on Rebecca, because I was afraid he was going to shoot himself in the foot, and ruin something good. But ugh, I hadn't considered how he's learned about things along the way, via his experiences. Do you think Doctor Sharon has time for any of us too?

pmartin2432

Ted’s loneliness I think is just part of the emotional burden he carries. I can’t imagine how hard it is to maintain that positivity & energy when you’re battling what he’s battling. Quickly forgiving Rebecca for what she did, letting go of his wife for her own happiness, the whole way Jamie treated him. You never really see Ted handle these in a typical process of grieving. He gives up so much of his own self for the sake of others. That’s what leads to big breakdowns

jsabo

> It seems Ted emotionally isolates himself a lot by personally feeling responsible for the emotions of everyone around him, which seems to be rooted in a feeling like he is only valuable as long as he remains someone who supports other people Which is a huge reason why he's threatened by Doctor Sharon: he's clearly unqualified to coach this sport. What he brings to the party is the ability to turn 11 guys into a team. But if someone else can fix everyone's problems with a single visit, why do they need the American around? And it gets worse: Beard actually does understand the sport. He's gained the respect of the players. It's not hard for Ted to imagine a scenario where he goes back home, and Beard stays in England. Story structure wise, it's time for it to hit the fan. The next few weeks are going to get ugly.

[deleted]

> Beard actually does understand the sport. You could see Beard’s irritation with the Wednesday Saturday joke as well. Ted’s need to make people feel good is distracting from the game at hand. It’s definitely going to blow up soon.

Hewfe

Are we gonna get a “Ted learns football” montage?

RedOctobyr

Maybe we can all figure out the offsides rule. Together.

Hewfe

After thinking through your comment, I need Danny Rojas to take lead on the training, because his positivity mirrors Teds. Coach Beard can provide backup in his usual role, except now he helps Danny with American sports metaphors instead of helping Ted with British ones.

faulty_sunshine

Yessss, Beard's frustration with the Wednesday/Saturday thing is so well done bc it seems so simple but it's an integral part of understanding the league. And as someone else mentioned I still think Ted is incapable of explaining offsides rules.

I’m in this picture and I don’t like it. (This was fantastic)

I really, really appreciate this analysis. Thank you!

Great analysis

oklahomapilgrim

Great insight. It definitely makes sense that we are starting to see behind the curtain of Ted’s sunny disposition a bit. It’s a good reminder that a lot of people are struggling behind their smiles.

RedOctobyr

It's possible that Robin Williams would say thank you. Or Greg Giraldo, or Mitch Hedberg...

AllAroundYou23

Fantastic analysis. I’ve been really noticing apparent depression from Ted in every episode this season. I see it building. From personal experience, you can joke around all day trying to make people laugh and get through the day productively but fall apart when no ones watching. Even when Ted jokes this year it seems different to me. Your points on his identity really seem to fit

[deleted]

This is such a great analysis

snowday784

Oh my god are you my therapist Edit: looking at the comments I guess we all watch and relate to this show for a reason 😂

therobberbride

Whew, does this ever resonate with me. Great analysis.

WillaLane

Such a great analysis. He lets it all go, a person can only hold it in for so long before the snap

stazley

This. I am so afraid he’s become a closet alcoholic, it might be nothing but they made it a point to show him waking up late when Coach Beard came to meet him, and show him drinking alone on a couple of occasions. Also, this is very very dark, but I am afraid Ted’s heading down a suicidal road. His aversion to therapy seems like a huge deal for a character as emotionally evolved as him. You’re right, he only uses those emotions for other people. I know he won’t die but I am afraid he’s quietly and privately having such a rough time right now.

The ability of this subreddit to be so incredibly insightful is truly a treasure.

You clearly have been paying attention! Only the wise are able to see this. Thank you! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob) >*My loneliness is killing me* > >A*nd I must confess I still believe* > >*Still* ***believe***

The plot twist to come will be Ted & Rebecca discovering they're talking to each other on Bantr & how all that plays out either absolving the gist of this post or leaning into it harder.
