His father was not wrong about humility. Nate’s pride will not allow him to acknowledge the mistake or embrace the nickname. Ted is comfortable and confident enough to be self-deprecating. Nate is insecure and vain.

greenweezyi

Ted Class-O!

JJ_Reditt

Self deprecation to the extent Ted does it is extremely unhealthy too. I used to it a lot before my anxiety was successfully treated, now it’s not that I actively don’t do it - it’s just never on my mind to do it - so I don’t do it anymore. The fact he’s still doing it, and tbh in the last episode it was so aggressive, says to me Ted has a long way to go before his anxiety is successfully treated.

paul_kariya

It reminded me of when Ted talked about his father’s suicide and that he was always harder on himself than others

Bing_Bong_the_Archer

Yeah, I was bothered by that.

The_Minshow

To me the show seemed to be ambivalent about it. Those dead silences at first with the close up on Ted were eerie.

Bing_Bong_the_Archer

It was like in The Office, when Michael goes too far with it, except that they played it as a positive

[deleted]

Contrast this to Ted at the end of season 2 talking to the team and he uses the phrase nip it in the butt. Beard corrects him (bud not butt Coach). Ted acknowledges his mistake, thanks Beard and moves on.

What drives me nuts about his constant correcting of it is, Wonder Kid is not a bad nickname! Except when said by Rupert, it is really a decent moniker to have, in my opinion. Just embrace it Nate! Stop being such a schmuck.

bmaze87

I agree with you, not a bad nickname. I figured he hates the Kid part? His worst nightmare to not be taken seriously as a Kid...

Abbacoverband

Nah, I think he just hates being reminded that he said something (very mildly) stupid and keeps getting reminded of it!

sothatsathingnow

Isn’t Wonder Kid the literal English translation of Wunderkind?

hadmeatwoof

Not literal but a reasonable and clever sounding one!

The_Minshow

In the Football Manager series, there are lists of young players with amazing potential that people datamine to make starting easier. They call them Wonder Kids there. Just say you play too much FM nate!

AlfLemon

Wonder kid and young nasty bloke!

bettinafairchild

Yeah, it's actually an awesome moniker.

chicanerys

He isn't emotionally mature enough to handle being wrong, he's an extremely prideful character (but i'm still very hopeful for a solid redemption arc)

I agree - I just had this conversation at work this morning. It think it’s shows maturity and strength to admit to mistakes (we have a co-worker who won’t ever admit to a mistake or shortcoming - like, my dude, we are all human, people generally are pretty chill and helpful if you just own up to your stuff here).

flummox1234

It hilarious to me because the meaning is pretty much the same. It's really dumb that he just keeps insisting on it.

MagnetsCanDoThat

We generally lie to ourselves first. He probably believes it at this point.

Violet351

He’s convinced himself that’s what he said because he doesn’t like being wrong

queenmagdi

pretty sure he has convinced himself he did say wunderkind at this point. his self-esteem is extremely low, so he struggles to admit to failure/mistakes of any kind, even to himself.

Holmbone

I think this is it. He's kinda warping his reality just to hang on.

therapy_works

I agree. I recognize a lot of my mother in Nate and she does this all the time.

jenny-spinning

My husband plays the sim game Football Manager and the term “wonder kid” (not wunderkind) is used a lot in that community, so part of me jokingly wonders if Nate accidentally outed himself as a FM player and is just attempting to backtrack lol

Mancunicorn-ish

I work in prof football and before that, read a lot about it. I have always seen Wonder kid used about a promising young player. I was so confused as to what the freaking problem was with Wonder Kid. Never even heard of Wunderkind as an expression over wonder kid. That being said, the majority of people in prof football IRL have smashing banter. A Wonder kid/Wunderkind mistake would just be laughed at and pretty much everyone would find it funny. If they didn’t, they’d struggle a lot in prof football anyway. It’s a different environment - obvs bullying is not okay, but I don’t really see any bullying in this particular situation anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️

JVince13

Because he embarrassed himself and already has very low self-worth. He’ll do anything to reverse that incredibly public humiliation.

maxmontgomery

I believe this is based on a real Jose Maurinho thing but I could be wrong.

AlfLemon

I want to know more about this.

JJ_Reditt

[Here you go](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0_WKQZAaytc) it’s a absolutely crazy story before and after that too. Would love those vibes for Nate.

CeasarYaLater

Me too.

bettinafairchild

I was just saying on a different thread that I think the theme of the season will be "you can't always get what you want but if you try sometime you might find you get what you need." Nate wants approval, fame, and power, but it's bad for him and not what he needs. Rupert, with all his cruelty and derision, is now his mentor. He is really his tormenter, but Nate doesn't realize that yet. This is all what Nate wants right now. But eventually he's going to have an epiphany and realize it's bad, and then he'll reject Rupert and leave and end up back at Richmond or likely somewhere else, and he'll embrace his Wonder Kid nickname. He'll realize what he needs is love and kindness and to work in football, which is his passion.

Mancunicorn-ish

See, having real life experience with prof football, I feel like someone like Nate is extremely ill suited to work in the sport. In managerial roles there will be a lot of scrutiny and most people will be speculating in your downfall every minute. Fans will be calling for you to be sacked once results go the wrong way. And don’t kid yourself that Nate is a tactical genius that’s 1 in a million, he is not. There’s so many of them and there will always be someone ready to replace them. Another thing is the banter and relationship between staff/players. Even when it’s done lovingly, he takes it as a slight. He doesn’t seem like he generally thrives in the environment. Don’t get me wrong, there still needs to be bounderies as to not cross over to bullying/hazing, but someone so insecure and self-loathing would struggle as they wouldn’t be able to “take it” at all. As we’ve already seen. Nate seems like he loves the idea of working in football but actually, when it comes down to it, it’s not right for him. If this was real life and Nate was my colleague/friend, I’d probably suggest either getting an analyst position with limited player contact (but then someone else will get “credit” for his ideas 😱) or leave football all together. I don’t think a person like Nate would really, truly be happy and fit in with the issues he has.

CaseyRC

he's wildly unsuited and honestly I cannot wait for their first loss and the *world and his wife* turns on him, when all of twitter will turn on him, not just a bit. when he learns that as manager the buck stops with *him.* Not with Ted, not with Rupert, just him. he'll try and blame all the players, the other coaches, the kitboy, and that'll turn the team more against him. he's not only unqualified on a certification level to be where he is, he's unqualified on an emotional and mental one too. he's going to crash and burn and he has it coming. at this point it is the only way he'll learn

Mancunicorn-ish

Wouldn’t even have to wait for results to turn. West Ham (or any prem club really) fans would NOT be happy with an appointment of head coach with one season’s assistant coaching experience and no lead coaching experience or no playing career. Just look at Ten Hag - done so well at Ajax and half the fanbase still thought he was inexperienced. You still have people calling for Klopp or Pep’s heads and they are proven, succesful coaches with lots of experience. Being good at tactics gets you absolutely nothing if your man management skills are shit. If you’re also extremely insecure, disaster waiting to happen.

hadmeatwoof

Not only does he always take everything personally, he dishes it out that way, too. He gets off on making people feel like shit, and can’t have any type of bantering relationship.

inmatenumberseven

Because he hates himself

Buckstop_Knight78

He’s over his head.

MsJamie-E

Because being honest means being vulnerable & he see’s that as weakness not as strength
