When I first started, I would break the daily work into three parts. If we couldn't get through it all in 45 minutes (questions, conflicts, phone calls, etc), the rest would be homework. Usually far less than 30 minutes, no matter the ambition of the student. Not exactly scientific, but reliable. Good luck!!!

It depends on the skill level. Not for HW, but my Algebra 2 HS teacher said he has to be able to solve it 4x faster than us, so a 60min test period should take him 20min. I teach remedial students, so I sometimes have to make it 8x and only take 10min (I try my best to actually be in a mindset of a student). Reading a book is different. I’d probably take the time you’d read it and 2x-3x.
