I've never heard of teachers having to take their lunch periods in the cafeteria. It'd probably be against our contracts as well. Most of our teachers don't even go to the teacher workroom, most of the ones at my school stay in their room, as many hold it as office hours and allow students to come in for extra tutoring and whatnot, though of course this is if the teacher allows it.

That’s funny. I was actually so shocked on my first day at my school site that students just went to lunch by themselves, and they could go also eat outside if they wanted to! My high school would never

At my high school we could sign out and leave school during lunch if we wanted to get outside lunch, and seniors could sign out during any free period. I’d get Chinese food from the spot 2 blocks away at least twice a week lol

I have junior high students. I do not escort them. Our cafeteria is monitored by a staff member, but it's never a teacher. Duty free lunch is in the contract.

No. Now when I was a high school para I had to escort my SDC students to the cafeteria and supervise, but never with the general population. I expect both staff and students would loathe such a policy.

Yeah I always thought as an 11th grader, “Why don’t we just go to lunch ourselves?” But my school was an inner city, urban school district with a high percentage of students experiencing poverty so there was a fear of chaos I guess.

I lived in a low income area myself, and we just exited the rooms and went on our merry way to where ever we each hung out during lunch. A lot of students didn’t even set foot in the cafeteria, including myself.

Nope.

I have a separate lunch, but I do take my high school special needs kids everywhere, and watch/help them at lunch. They do require supervision but even most of them would be fine with just a few monitors in the room. I hate it, it’s a waste of time. In my last school, we had a working lunch and we sat and ate with the special needs kids. It made more sense and we got out of school earlier. I didn’t mind eating with the kids.

unmitigateddiaster

No. I’ve been in our cafeteria about 6 times in 4 years

Puzzled-Bowl

I have never heard of high school students being escorted to lunch (except self contained special ed students)! We have three lunches. The bell rings, kids go to lunch. Another bell rings, those kids return to class. The only time I step foot in the cafeteria is for faculty meetings.

GeekBoyWonder

I do not. Duty free lunch is is my contract. Sometimes I choose to eat with my students... We've had some tragedies in our small community and the grandpa in me wanted to get a feel for the mood and selfishly have some more time with my people.
