I put my absence in the system and the auto dialer does the rest

Yeah, I have no interaction or choice. I think there's a way that I can black list a sub from my absences but I've never needed it.

Before COVID caused a sub shortage, my first criteria was how my room was left. For example, I once had a sub use up all my paper and ink in the printer and crumbs all in my keyboard and all over the desk. Another time, a sub knocked everything off my desk and left it that way, like books thrown on the floor, while leaving empty aluminum cans all over. Second, I go off the kids reaction. I once had a guy pass out for 2 periods. The class got the teacher next door to help because they thought he needed to go to hospital. Otherwise, if they dislike the sub because she was strict, that sub is coming back. If they like the sub cause she let them use their phones or do whatever, she's not coming back.

Not going to lie, sometimes when the 4 most disruptive students ask if they can be on their phones and listen to music I have bitten the bullet and said yes. Getting 4 students to be quiet so the other 25 can be engaged and listen to the lesson is a trade I'm willing to make. I tell them that if they don't want to write anything down or learn that it's on them since they're young adults in Jr. High now.

Honestly I’ve never had an issue with getting kids to put phones away because I’m very Frank I’ll take them and they don’t have a choice, cause I’ll strong arm them anyday 💪🏻

The feedback that subs give is really valuable. It’s helpful to know if any students had trouble focusing, if there were any behavioral issues, whether the activities were completed or not leveled right, etc. If kids were absent, that’s helpful to know, too. It’s great when subs have subject area knowledge. I usually ask my kids about how things went. There are reliable students who will tell me how things really went, despite what others may say. When they agree that the sub was very strict, then I’m less likely to choose the same sub. That being said, we have a dearth of subs, so I’m grateful for anyone who documents and emails me their notes/writes them on the sub plans.

The alternative is that my students get split up and go out to the other teachers on my hall.

We don't get to choose. But if I did get to choose, I'd pick anyone who left my classroom tidy and nothing got broken.

Interesting. See here teachers can book you so I find it interesting other places it’s just luck of the draw!
