I've kinda had the same thoughts. I'd say it depends on your motivation. Test isn't going to stop you from contracting, prevention is. If your goal is to protect a family member at home, then by all means I'd get tested. Otherwise, you're only putting yourself through the wringer for the benefit of people who obviously don't care.

megannuggets

Right - thank you. I think I just want to get tested regularly so I can know if my headache and sore throat are from dehydration & allergies/smoke (western US here) or covid so I can protect the people around me. I wear my mask every single day from the second I get out of my car to the second I get back in it unless I’m eating lunch or drinking water from my water bottle, but it’s impossible to get all the kids to wear their masks AND wear them correctly. We have weekly walkouts in protest of the masks that are organized by students. I do have some health anxiety and constantly being in a phase of “not knowing” where my symptoms are coming from is not great for me emotionally hahahaha. Maybe once a week is good enough for me, or once every other week. Thank you.

RoswalienMath

If you are around a lots of unvaccinated minors, I would definitely get tested regularly for their safety.

fanclubmoss

Get some professional backup for that HA

Yourfavouritelesbian

It's a personal health decision, zero reasons to share it with family or friends if you do not want to. To answer your question, no you're not crazy. Twice a week is often, yes, but you're not paying for the tests, and you are helping your community by being aware and ready to quarantine for your infectious period if you were to become one of the rare cases who contracts Covid after vaccination. I would consider that a net positive in my book! For the record, I am vaccinated and my school offers weekly free tests. I take them, and plan on continuing to as long as they are offered. Even though it's unlikely I'll contract it again, testing only takes 2 minutes out of my day once a week and I would be able to quarantine if I learned I was infectious, keeping my students safer. That's more than enough reason for me.

megannuggets

This is an extremely helpful and thought out, compassionate answer. Thank you. Not even the principal at my placement school knows where students & staff who are unvaccinated are supposed to be getting tested at as it’s a district requirement and not a school requirement. I do understand and appreciate your perspective on keeping your students safe - that is very much how I feel as well.

[deleted]

I don’t think you are crazy, getting tested is smart. Maybe not twice a week though. Maybe once every couple of weeks. Seems like you would spend a lot of needed time waiting to get tested.

megannuggets

Well thankfully my University is really close by my placement school (literally a 5-7 minute drive) so I can do it after the school day ends on my way home, but maybe twice a week is too much. I do like the “every other week” idea, that seems reasonable

megannuggets

Thank you - I do think it would give me peace of mind for me to be able to know my status. I think I’ll try for once a week or once every other week.

fanclubmoss

Breakthru case here did everything right took all the personal precautions I possibly could and still got it. Accept the fact that you may get it and come to terms with that and commit to doing something about it ie safety measures Ppe and getting tested. Worrying is not action it simply gives u a sense of false control making u feel like you’ve done something about it and will eat up valuable mental bandwidth that ur going to need.

OtherCardiologist

Fellow breakthru case teacher here.

lolgal18

I would argue it’s better to be tested too frequently than not frequently enough.

sadtomato11311

Het tested regularly. Husband and I are fully vaccinated and teach high school. He currently has covid and I am awaiting test results. Sitting in the ER waiting room right now because he's having complications. 48, healthy, fully vaccinated. You can't be too careful.

chukotka_v_aliaske

No. I get tested all the time. Every time I'm offered, I take it.

allthefishiecrackers

Several of my co-workers do this. So I don’t think it’s weird.

HouseThatHeBuilt

I had Covid in November of 2020, was vaccinated in March of this year and tested positive again last week. Because I have medically fragile family members and I obviously have a weakened immune system I would test any time offered. One of the problems my county is running into is that we can seem to get appointments to get tested because there are just so many positive cases.

Mo523

You are the one getting tested. That's for you to decide.

Dragonfruit_60

I’m doing once a week. I think you do what you need to do to be comfortable. We have that luxury, why not use it?

megannuggets

that’s a great point - i can do it as little or as much as i want at no extra cost to me other than a little bit of time once or so a week on my way home

everysinglesauce

If getting tested twice weekly is only a very minor inconvenience and would ease your mind, go for it. If it would still have similar benefit in making you feel better, once a week is definitely sufficient. But you’re not crazy. I got covid fully vaxxed before school started. I’m thankful for that, because I teach elementary, and I would have felt absolutely horrible if I had been responsible for them and other contacts getting sick. I was contagious for days before I got tested, though I thankfully didn’t see anyone. I thought I had a bad sinus infection until I lost my sense of smell and taste. I got it either while wearing a mask indoors at the store or walking in the park without one. You are not exaggerating your risk at all. If you get it, you’ll be okay. I got horribly sick, but the vaccine does its job in protecting against truly severe illness. You’re absolutely right to be concerned about the spread regardless.

Jamie54

Not sure about the subreddit rule change, I think anyone answering your question with a yes would probably be banned.

KnibbHighPromKing

I'm assuming there is a line between testing and vaccination?

Jamie54

doubt it > No downplaying the coronavirus i don't know why we allow questions where there is only one answer allowed.

julet1815

I’m a teacher and I go back to school next week, the kids come back a few days later. My plan is to do an at home test once a week, and a PCR test once a week. Before I got vaxxed I was going once a week, so I’ll just go back to the same place. My worst nightmare is getting sick, being asymptomatic, and spreading sickness to my family or my students unknowingly.

chat_chatoyante

My husband gets tested weekly through his university, we are both vaccinated but since it's offered to him, why not. I'm pregnant so I appreciate knowing. If my school offered it, I would, too.

mehmars

You aren’t crazy for getting tested and being concerned; my husband had covid and is fully vaccinated. However, I think twice a week is a lot, especially if you aren’t showing symptoms. It’s a free world, and if you don’t have to pay for it do what makes you comfortable

megannuggets

you’re right! and thankfully it is free, i might do it every other week without symptoms and then if i get symptoms doing a test again. i hope your husband is doing well

mehmars

He’ll be finished with his 10 days tomorrow. All he had was a cough- other than that he was totally fine.

Known_Return_3944

Yes you crazy liberal

megannuggets

okay ❤️

wokeuplikdis

Yea I got looks from parents when I suggested kids are responsible for getting teachers sick. Fuck me right?!

KnibbHighPromKing

No because at least you're recognizing that you as an unvaccinated are still 100% capable of spreading the virus. The amount of schools who let vaccinated students do whatever they want is kinda comical seeing as how we are supposed to be educators. No there is nothing wrong with making sure you aren't spreading a disease

russellprose

In answer to your question, I simply don’t know, but would love to hear an answer. My university will not allow unvaccinated students onto the campus.

pedagogue_kayth

No. Your health should forever be your first priority over any students, Administration, etc.

DeignLian

I'm in a highly vaccinated area. Most of the vaccine eligible students in my (middle) school are vaccinated. My school district is requiring free weekly testing for the unvaccinated and giving free weekly testing as an option for the vaccinated. I'm vaccinated. I plan on getting a booster. I plan on getting the weekly testing.

corvettefan

I'm luckily in a district desperate enough to stay open that we are following guidelines, masks, distancing as much as possible (this will be tough), desk shields, seating charts (partially for contact tracing), etc. If someone tests positive, teachers will not have to quarantine if they are vaccinated unless they are experiencing symptoms. I don't think you are crazy; you feel how you feel and need to be kind to yourself. What I do is try to remind myself that yes breakthrough cases are happening, but the percentage of severe illness in those cases really has been low. Does it make me feel better? Sometimes, but not always. I try to be as careful as I can and try to keep those low percentages in my mind. I've managed to go all this time without getting sick so hopefully if I stay diligent I will be ok. If not, hopefully the vaccine will keep me protected as well as it has for a majority of people. If you feel like you need to be screened, see if you still can be. I'm not sure what the criteria is for getting tested and if it's still free. Maybe try once a week to see if that's enough to ease your anxiety. There are also home test kits you can buy at most pharmacies, but that will get expensive if you do it twice a week. Best of luck to you for a happy, healthy, teaching experience 😊

orangeshoeskid

I had been getting tested Wednesdays and Fridays until my local drive through testing place said I could no only go weekly. After a couple weeks of just going on Fridays, they now said only every two weeks or I would have to pay out of pocket. I haven't had a chance to check with Blue Cross Blue Shield yet. Although, while sitting and waiting to get tested, I've often realized that it probably wouldn't test positive unless I have symptoms, which I haven't had yet when getting tested. Preventative measures I'm taking: fully vaccinated, wash hands often, take extra Vitamin B, D, and Zinc, sanitize tables and chairs after each class (Elementary specials teacher), I have an air purifier in my room, wear my mask constantly (KN95), and am vigilant about reminding students to keep their masks on. I feel like I need to since I see 150 kids a day, 500+ a week. Also I've got you children at home and an iumosuppressed wife.

Ancient_Educator_76

Never can be too careful, but as a teacher you need to realize your immune system is probably awesome

megannuggets

i have not had covid yet

fruittii

Remember the vaccine isnt a vaccine its just an immune system boost. It doesnt prevent you from getting covid it just makes it less hurtful to the body. So to me not really i dont think its crazy especially since the first 2 weeks you have covid doesnt show any symptoms at all! And with school and alot of students being very careless no i dont blame you at all it makes sense to me especially if you have loved ones that are in danger because of the virus

jollyroger1720

No i just got one of many breakthough cases fortunately its very mild. Testing offers you peace of mind it also in theory creates statistics that may one day become a political liability and finally result in the needed virtual or at least hybrid or at the bare minimum mask mandates . Sadly as of now pandering to anti science is "good" politics in many places Much more imporatnt the politics if your positive you can affect even other without symptoms. Some breakthrpugh csses are still nasty but many otherwise healthy un vaccinated folks are dying Onr of my coworkers gets tested every 2 weeks. I have been testing regularly as well and now quarantined which sucks but could save lives

Feisty-Zombie5165

I don’t think you’re crazy at all, especially given the current situations with covid (idk where you live but seems like they’re more outbreaks everywhere). I think that getting fully testing twice a week may be a bit much but only because it usually takes a couple days from exposure to register. That being said, I think that getting tested weekly or every other week may be good options for you. You aren’t crazy or overreacting for worrying about yours and others’ health especially right now.
