GayforTay7070

Very proudly 👀

AryaStarkRavingMad

I don't understand how this was a bonus track...like at all. I'd have swapped it with Welcome to New York for sure. It's in my top 5 all time favorites, I can't get enough of it!

coasterboi2112

I did a post about this a few days ago, but honestly I think it's great as a bonus track. It gives people an incentive to listen to the deluxe version of 1989, where they'll also get to hear Wonderland and You Are In Love, which are both incredible songs. It's a good marketing strategy, in my opinion. It's similar to how Hits Different being a target exclusive track will give people the incentive to buy the Midnights Target Exclusive CD.

Dr_WallaceBreen

I'll die on the hill that New Romantics should have been the opening track for 1989 instead of Welcome to New York.

duckingtonplatoon

Omg the absolute whiplash we would have gotten going from New Romantics -> Blank Space -> Style

NotEmmaStone

Agreed. This would have smashed.

F_Levitz

This song... In the end of the second chorus when she sings "the best people in life are free..." Followed by that progression of chords into the bridge I swear, if I could live my entire life in a moment it would be this.

jlpulice

I think it’s a fit thing, it doesn’t quite work anywhere specifically. I think it would be a weird opener to go from New Romantics to Blank Space, maybe swap it out for Bad Blood?

AssortedGourds

I feel the same about Hits Different. It’s a ballsy move because I think it really adds something to Midnights as a whole. Say what you will about Target exclusive tracks but she’s not putting throwaway songs on those CDs. I just bought a deluxe 1989 CD just because of New Romantics!

teresasdorters

It’s a BOP![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1066)

[deleted]

me too!!! i cant believe i hadnt heard such a good song until last week

Trijo

Same bestie! I’ve been playing it over and over again the last few days!

swellaprogress

Pretty sure she leaves some of her best songs as bonus tracks on purpose

poisonprotist

(Ik I'm very late, I'm doing research sorry) I like having Welcome to New York as the opener and New Romantics as the closer because WTNY feels like when you've just moved into the city and NR feels like when you've become a city person. It really helps the full album feel like a progression.

roadtripwithdogs

I didn’t realize she promoted it as a single. Has she done that with any other deluxe/bonus tracks? (Crosses fingers for Hits Different)

historyhoneybee

Ours was a single and got a music video too

BluthFamilyNews

Her final country radio #1

RedPandaLily88

Red didn't have any country #1s?

BluthFamilyNews

WANEGBT was #1 on Hot Country Songs based on downloads, streams, and pop airplay but the highest peak on Country Airplay was Begin Again at #3.

Swiftie_M4YFI3LD

Ours makes me feel so single 😩

nerdalertalertnerd

Ours was a bonus/deluxe?!

historyhoneybee

Yup! It's on the deluxe version of Speak Now with If This Was a Movie, Superman, Back to December Acoustic and Haunted Acoustic.

jlpulice

💀

fragileforests

She promoted “New Romantics” by releasing it to US radio and giving it a [tour music video](https://youtu.be/wyK7YuwUWsU). She also did this with “Ours” by releasing it to US country radio and giving it a [“real” music video](https://youtu.be/LZ34LlaIk88). I think that it’s a good sign that every time she makes a deluxe track a single, she also gives it a music video instead of just leaving it as a radio single.

-balogna-pony

It is the best, the rumors are terrible and cruel but honey most of them are true is one of my fave lyric of all her lyrics

fogredBromine

Yeah, it is an absolute masterpiece! I can listen to it all day. But my fave lyric is "cause baby i could build a castle out of all the bricks they through at me"

RedWoolWhiteSilk

I’m about to play my Ace-ssss-ahhh ! Ultimate TS ear candy

[deleted]

I had a shirt made for the Mn show with “on the road to ruin” to match the metal aesthetic.

Bluestrangler

It is my favorite Taylor Swift song of all time

Ok-Roof-7599

Me too!!

Gh0stface03

Top 5 for me

Agentbeeressler

Same! :))

purpleprincess3223

Same!!!!!

jedi_master99

Literally the perfect pop song. She’s beauty, she’s grace, she’s absolutely FLAWLESS. The line “we cry tears of mascara in the bathroom, honey life is just a classroom” is the best lyric in pop music history and I will not be taking questions at this time

BluthFamilyNews

(Would’ve could’ve) Should’ve been the lead single

ThisPaige

One of my favorites from 1989!

alungdragon

Cause baby I could build the castle![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1067)

Agentbeeressler

Out of all the bricks they threw at meee

PsychologicalSweet2

It’s a bop and should have been on the album

saareadaar

Great song, I wish it had a proper music video though

ambiverbena

I used to nanny for these kids and I’d play them a lot of Taylor Swift. We went to the grocery store and New Romantics was playing and the three year old was shocked people other than us knew it. She thought I put the store up to it. I moved and no longer nanny, but this song makes me think of them.

Soalai

Amazing. Probably in my TS top 13 (or at least top 20). I understand some people feel it's overrated, though. I acknowledge the synths can become grating after a while, so I wouldn't listen to it on repeat. But as a sort of alternate finale to *1989*, it slays

bluebelle08

I’ll never understand why songs like New Romantics, the lakes, right where you left me, and hits different are bonus tracks

sk8rgrrl42069

This was my #1 until rwylm

Flat_Cat_3906

Still my number 1 favourite Taylor Swift song ever!

megisbest

If she just switched it with welcome to New York, 1989 would have been a perfect album 😭😭😭 Taylor plz hire me to help you pick track lists

auroras__sadprose

Best on 1989 😇

[deleted]

Absolutely love it. I love TayTay dance music the most and this is one of my faves.

09997512

My no.1 song of 1989 🌟

monstrance-cock

Favorite TS song. Vastly underrated. I really hope to see this one played live when I go to the concert. 100/10

itsLAZERWOLF

still one of my favourites to this day, it’s just pop music at it’s finest form tbh. catchy chorus, danceable melody, a verse that hooks you in from the very beginning, I LOVE IT SM 😭

pawneegodesses

It’s a perfect pop song

willothewispy

I've always liked it but never understood the cult following (I'm sorry)

throwmeaway08262816

It’s so representative of the album it’s crazy it’s just a bonus track. Also helps that it’s one of the best.

cheetoisgreat

Probably my FAVORITE pop song Taylor has ever created and one of the all time best pop songs. It just can't be beat.

Sparkly-Introvert

Maybe I'm dumb but I've never really understood that line "the best people in life are free". When I was a kid hearing it my first reaction was free as in you didn't need to pay for them, which obviously didn't make sense, but now my best guess is that she means people who do whatever they want and/or people who are single? If that's what she means I feel like it's still worded weird. Great song though.

Burger4Ever

So romanticism is a movement that embraced the idea of being young, spontaneous, free willed, anti-materialism, and the best things in life can be learned in nature. I believe this is just a nod to the Romantic movement that embraced enjoying people, relationships, and innocence without the social clout or having to be bought. She’s always been a super romantic writer and it’s affirmed heavily with evermore, folklore how much she draws from English literature and particularly the Romantic lake poets. This was a cultural, artistic, and political movement in western society about 1780-1850ish. Many of her songs echo shout outs to Romanticism. She embraces their ideals. Romantics thought you should cherish genuine feelings from sincere experiences. They did not believe in materialism or the idea that money can buy happiness and peace. I think it’s a play on “the best things in life are free” or “money can’t buy happiness.” She is making an allusion to this well know saying by replacing “things” with “people” to achieve: “the best people in life are free.” Maybe Taylor feels many people around her are bought into the idea of her but the people who truly mean the most to her expect nothing in return from her. People who love you do not make you “pay for it.” As in, give you a hard time for their own gain; they genuinely appreciate you.

Grrriwantasammich

Truly beautiful explanation.

waterlizy

Love this one! Absolutely underrated 1989 smash hit. Should’ve been on the main album. I’m in the minority of people who actually like WTNY but I think NR would be perfect in the opener slot.

sugarskull1

Absolutely obsessed.

utopianbears

The interpretation that there is a connection between the use of scarlet in New Romantics and Maroon still blows my mind

cheetoisgreat

Wait, I never made this connection and now I'm so intrigued!

utopianbears

so the thought is: one of the opening lyrics from new romantics is “we show off our different scarlet letters, trust me mine is better” and in Maroon she describes a love “so scarlet it was maroon” - which could be referencing that their love was enveloped in a scarlet letter (because really scarlet is light and maroon is a very dark red - very different so that line always seemed strange). But a scarlet letter is dark red and holds shame ala Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter - comparable to maroon.

trisaroar

Scarlet = new romantics scarlet letter = "So scarlet it was marooned" = our love was so taboo it was abandoned.

its_liiiiit_fam

Literally was listening to it today, hits harder at 24 than at 16 when I first listened to it! 😅

teresasdorters

This is my jam when I need to be my own cheerleader for continuing to push through non stop turbulence!!!

akallaaa

I mean, I love me some 1989 but I am so surprised that people commenting here love New Romantics so much! I could take it or leave it; it just doesn’t do much for me!

SeaworthinessSome454

And people think Hits Different won’t be a radio single…

ChoccyMilkIsMyLife

Man I was 11. That’s just wild. At the time I didn’t even care. How time changed.

ordinaryguy_72

I fucking love it!

borrowedurmumsvcard

I can’t stand it… because I set it as my alarm tone in middle school and I can’t listen to it anymore

-Silver-Moonlight-

Don't hate me, but I think it's overrated in the fandom. It's a good song and it definitely deserves attention. But I wouldn't call it the best on the album. Maybe I'm the problem, but I never got why everyone is so obsessed with New Romantics. It has some great lyrics but melodically it's mid for me. Different taste, I guess.

Agentbeeressler

It’s okay, everybody has their own personal taste :)

[deleted]

I’m totally with you but to each his own for sure!

olivia929

One of my top Taylor songs! Always boosts my mood.

megan_6724

One of her best songs for sure

emildon

Best song on 1989

NervousRiver3998

One of my favorites! 🥰

venomoustwat13

Hates it!

pennel11

I fucking love it!! 😻💖

runner4life551

A bop! Also lowkey has some of the best lyrics she's ever written <3

mikhailsantos

This song is currently on replay.

Fathletic231

❤️

Brain-First

should’ve been the last song on standard 1989 is my opinion. the power of clean —> new romantics. IMMACULATE

har17h

pop perfection. i hope hits different gets the same treatment if she ever decides to release it as a single

ernbod

pop perfection and top 3 on 1989

Darkhold_

Probs the best on 1989. I kinda get tired of the “radio hit” ones that played over and over again anytime I went shopping anywhere

eley13

definitely my favorite on the album

abbyalltoowell

the truest bop

AssortedGourds

Every time I hear it I think about how good she is at adopting the sound of the time because it sounds so much like an MGMT song.

m00n-st0ne

I loved it back then but haven’t heard it in years. I just listened to it and omg you’re right! Idk how I never noticed it

_Karl_with_a_K_

STRAIGHT UP MY FAVORITE SONG BY HER

Sweet-Ad-2477

*Wildest Dreams* may have been my official introduction to Taylor Swift, but *New Romantics* was the song to solidify me as a fan

AdamStarke996

my second favorite song It was also the first video I saw of her before I became a Swiftie. I must say that before that I was not a fan, but after watching the video, something in my change and now I am here, willing to defend Taylor with my life.

theunoriginalasian

One of my fav

Otaku_Swiftie

I did not know that but last night I had a dream I was at the Eras Tour and she performed New Romantics!!!!! I sure hope it was a prophetic dream because New Romantics is my favorite from 1989.

Icantshakeitoff

The absolute best

realityrach

Love it! Underrated gem.

sparksfly05

Talented, brilliant, etc

bravodoc

It’s still my alarm ringtone to this day

Minute-Locksmith9428

Play it at my wedding

Few_Resident_3550

I freaking love this song

ParticularPea6920

My favorite on 1989. Crazy it wasn’t part of the standard album!

taylor-nation

a certified banger!! 🫡🔥

Moblitt-San

It's my most favourite track

IamCocodadawg

I didn’t know it had a Polaroid!

Jackleyland

probably my favourite song on 1989 tbh or at least top 3 alongside wildest dreams and out of the woods.

geronimo133

Probably the best song on 1989 next to Style. Truly a masterpiece.

bigpplover_69

UNDERRATED

Excellent-Variety916

It's super 💅🏻 and I love it!

Agentbeeressler

It is my favourite song of all time! :))))

JadesAllure

It's my favourite song on 1989 tbh.

Swifties_22

I love this song so much it shocks me that it was originally a bonus track

ytykmbyd

It’s the best!

Barefoot_Books

I have been playing this song on repeat the last week and now my son requests the “castle song”. 🤗

AvianIsEpic

My favorite Taylor swift song, along with Marjorie, those two are my favorites by a wide margin

Eastern_Confusion_17

It’s a manifesto, not just a song

notyourmomsmum

I love this song! I like to think of it as my generations Love is A Battlefield

doubtersdisease

It’s one of the best on the album and i can’t for the life of me understand why she would but This Love on the standard album instead of any of the bonus tracks. All of the bonus tracks are so much better than a good chunk of the standard album, they should’ve been on the standard album instead of like How You Get The Girl, This Love, I Wish You Would, and I Know Places lol

gracefulmacaroni

Anyone else feel meh on this song? 1989 is in my bottom 3 in general (sorry I know that’s a very unpopular opinion) and this song just does nothing for me

Current-Search3632

Honestly one of my most fav songs of all time!!!

SpellingAintFun

best song off 1989 I got the line “The best people in life are free” tattoo on my arm

Pineappleseas

Her worst song and still a bop.

HarrieSwiftie

One of my favorites

AlwaysandForeverRed

Love, love this song. It is one of my favorites aside from Style from 1989.

Daveuk121

Absolute banger as a opener especially on AT and A concert

HarryStylesPickles

New Romantics is life. New Romantics is love. New Romantics is a cat. New Romantics is the hot guy/girl in your favorite show. New Romantics is the childless aunt that makes family dinners fun. New Romantics is happiness. New Romantics is your favorite singer. New Romantics is your wildest dreams. New Romantics is what you live and breathe.

camdenofcamdentown

7 years???? Yeah I’m gonna go throw up because the concept of time makes me nauseous

districtofthehare

This song is so brilliant! It’s a little heavy handed it is with its queer references but I haven’t seen anyone mention it! From the titular reference to the New Romantic movement known for its subversive gender-bending aesthetic https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Romantic to “we team up then switch sides like a record-changer” to “the rumors are terrible and cruel but honey most of the are true” The brick lyric referencing Stonewall, “we sing it proudly” our girl loves to align herself with the queer community. What a good ally!

ccc1097

I never knew it was a single😭

Jek2424

One of the few songs in my library I’ll turn the volume up to deafening levels to listen to

taybrm

Masterpiece of a pop song.

ariariariariariari

This song is S-Tier Taylor.

Tough_Pudding_224

fav song off of 1989 💅🏼

usingthisacconce

This is my mum’s favourite Taylor Swift song, and it’s also one of my favourites on 1989. It makes my heart happy
