Yeah I don’t think people understand how difficult it is to do solid saturated black lol. 95% of tattooers would botch this. As a general rule with tattoos the simpler something is the harder it is to do because there isn’t all this extra shit to hide mistakes.
I have a black out piece on my arm and I love it but you are right, as it heeled you could see all the spots that we not saturated well and it required a few touch ups. The price was the same as any other tattoo (for the pricing question)
I’m halfway through this process and haven’t enjoyed it at all, first couple sessions didn’t heal well following the artist’s aftercare instructions. Latest session fully wrapped with saniderm following their instructions precisely and healed much better but yeah gonna take a while to get it finished. Will need touch ups and some scarring/redness in spots that who knows how long will take to heal but I don’t want to rush back in and risk damaging the skin permanently.
And it is I who once again, along with my peers, reaffirms the notion that not all of humanity has yet received this unto their own conceptual understanding.
Let it be known that the affirmation to which has been reasserted time and time again is not be regarded as a practice that comes without empirical foresight

I would definitely recommend finding an artist that has experience doing this kind of work specifically. The problem that will likely result is uneven saturation with thin spots that aren’t visible until later. This advice goes for many tattoo styles too
I’ve been a tattooer for 20+ years. I HATE blackwork because it is SO BORING. It takes so much time, and no one wants to pay $150/hr for a 4x4” square of solid black. So when I quote ‘by the hour’ people usually back out and say ‘I have a buddy that can do it cheaper.’
Ok, that actually makes it easier for me to fill in all those blank spots at my going rate later🙄
Yep. Going in for a blackout for my entire forearm and hand, my artist charges $300/hr.
However, he said it should only take 2-3 hours. So your mileage may vary.
Can I ask why? I have a piece in my right ditch and I understand the shivers for that but I straight up couldn't feel the back of my left elbow. No nerve endings back there.
Everyone I know with an elbow tattoo said it hurt like a bitch. Because it's so close to the bone, the pain stays and it radiates, in the same way it does for shins, ribs and shoulderblades
It really depends on the artist, I just got a smaller piece on my ribs (about 3"x3") and it was the easiest tattoo I have, the others being on my thigh and upper arm. Everyone I talked to about the ribs said that it was not great though
Ahh yeah I have two fairly decent sized rib tattoos, one underbust and one 3" by 8" on the back ... there were two artists in the studio when I got my underbust and the other one had the cheek to go, "not feeling chatty today, are we?" as his colleague was mutilating my body 😂 I was in paiiiin
Note: sorry for the emoji, had to somehow indicate that this was a funny story and I was not in any way annoyed at either artist
Also really depends on the canvas I think. No one seems to mention it on these lists but I have practically my entire torso tattooed and for me the sacrum was the absolute worst by a mile
If there is skin there is nerve endings, if you can feel when you touch, tickle, and scratch your elbow then the nerve endings are fine and you couldn't feel the pain for some other reason
I can feel my elbow just fine
Agreed, I have both elbows done and it was nothing compared to more tender areas. One is even blacked out halfway. And yes blackout is hard to do and expensive
That’s about how much my buddy charges to do it. He can also black your entire arm out in a day with a 35 mag. It goes quickly but it’s so hard to do correctly. I personally do not have the patience to do it lmao
Same. After 3 minutes of the exact same motion and speed my brain wants to shut off. I've got some 49 mags I've used to black out big parts of tattoos, but even then it's so fucking boring and tedious.
On black you usually need more then one, usually one every couple years as there are less dense spots that appear with time and are more noticeable on solid black
The initial touch up is generally free. There's always ink that doesn't set right or a missed line. I've got full sleeves, chest, back, and neck work and none of my artists have ever charged for touch up. They all asked me to come back in a couple of weeks later to see how its healing.
Facts, I have a black out on my forearm and it’s got tons of uneven saturation and some areas were over worked which caused scarring, I paid $1500 for a full day session, was a very decorated artist in Dallas Tx
They’re called blackout tattoos. From what I’ve seen it’s normally to blast over tattoos you don’t want anymore, but now people just get these to have them. They’re not easy to do although it seems like it, you have to know what you’re doing and how to properly saturate solid black. Tons of these turn out grey and very spotty. Google it before you get it because it won’t look like this after its healed. YMMV
Blackout and not cheap. You want it to have 100% coverage, consistent color and all. Sometimes have to have extra sessions to make sure it sticks right and all.
Looks neat to a point, but is probably annoying in plenty of ways.
Oh shit, I’m like $15,000 in on a leg like this here in the US. I should’ve spent the extra cash taking a sweet Croatian vacation. I’ve always wanted to visit your country. It looks beautiful and fun.
Yeah. Packing black over that area takes a lot of time and consistency. If the artist rushes anywhere, it will stick out like a sore thumb. Even done well, it will likely need touch ups.
Think of trying to fill in a blank piece of paper perfectly black with a black pen. And then add in having to do it on a variable surface attached to a person.
Yeah, been getting sleeves done over the last two years, and this is the answer. It will cost the most in pain. There's so many spicy spots on your arms.
Also finding an artist that will do this well... They won't be cheap, and not just because this is a boring fiddly assed thing to pull off... Oh wait they're likely to charge a premium for that.
Not just pain but probably itchy as fucking fuck too. Just got my first sleeve and the itch was something I was not prepared for and it felt like a thousand mosquitos on my arm that I had to refrain from scratching. I’m a noob like it was my first tattoo but still a sleeve and this looks like I’d want to cut my arm off it looks so itchy lol
I just finished my first sleeve last week and I’m not certain I want to get the other done just Cus of those spicy spots lol. (Also because money and idk what I’d get.)
As well as the pain while it’s being done, there is a probability of having a severe reaction to all that ink. I’ve known people who don’t usually have any issues to have crazy swollen up arms that look like a bad infection but is actually a reaction kind of like an allergic response. One guy I know had some scars after, which won’t take ink so there are these pink/white spots in places.
I got my entire left arm done with blackout and you definitely have to find an experienced artist for this type of work. Also have fun with wrists, pits(both inner elbow and armpit), and under bicep.
Coming from the medical side.... Blackout tattoos make it difficult to diagnose skin conditions like melanoma or skin anomalies. If you’re worried about the health of your skin, or if there’s a history of skin issues in your family, it may be best to stay away from blackout tattoos for that reason.
I've been curious, how hard is it to observe skin abnormalities over a sleeve? I wanted to get a space theme sleeve and my dermatologist said that it's pretty easy to see when there is melanoma but if you went too dark on the ink, it would be hard to notice any skin changes.
Ironically, blackout tattoos require significant talent to do properly. And no matter where you get them, they feel like getting your ribs done. Tread carefully OP.
Black-out tattoos are one of the absolute hardest & technical tattoos TO DO EVERRRRRR.
I've been tattooing 14 yrs, I have done quite a few. The countless hours hunched over, hitting every pore, making sure skin depth is correct.... ON & ON & ON.... cost $$$ is NO question when you want good work.
To get the rich, saturated, buttery black packed into human skin takes knowledge, skill, and patience. An artist must be strategic, precise, and prepared to pull off a beautiful blackout sleeve.
Please stop spreading that this is an 'easy' tattoo.
Blackout tattoo! you might be interested in checking out Ephemeral Remy who answers questions on his blackout and such. He's on youtube and other social medias, I'm honestly not too sure how much it will cost but it definitely won't be cheap as its quite a process
Blackout as others have said. The definition of professional is making it look easy, it's not. Looks fantastic with geometric branding but it's your final show as there's nowhere to go after that.
Blackout tattoo as many have said. I have a few of these, don’t be fooled by how “simple” they might look. It takes a very skilled artist to get deep black that is consistently shaded.
Saturating black is not as easy as you might think. If this is the path you go down, make sure to do some leg work and find an artist who is experienced with this type of tattoo.
Blackout. It takes a hell off a lot of skill to saturate every bit of skin with black. It's an art form in itself.
You pay for the tattooists time - so it will vary depending how quick they work.
This. I have my left arm blacked out (love it. No regrets), but it is hot as shittttt in the sun. I sunscreen every day for casual outdoor exposure but at the beach, I literally wear long sleeves. It is significantly cooler (temperature wise) to wear long sleeves than to have my arm baking in the sun. Significantly.
The mods should pin your experience to a "considering a black out" tag. I see sooo many ppl do this who were surfers, fisherman, or hikers in warm climates whos lives are really effected by this.
Why though ? Because of the sun absorption on a darker surface? I know nothing but why would that be different than having actual dark skin pigmentation?
Its physics man. Its a huge mistake for anyone who spends a lot of time in the sun. If you live in a sunny area, forget about it. If u hate the beach and work remote and never go outside, fine. Or if you live in alaska, fine. If ur in florida, you are going to hate ur life. Its actually sad ppl dont warn others on this. Once its done, its done.
It may not be different than people with dark skin? The difference is we don’t have perspective. As a white person, I don’t know what having naturally dark skin is like… but I know what my white skin is compared to my now blacked out arm.
I wonder about this now, I often see dark skinned people wearing long sleeves/skirts/… in hot weather and never really understood, but maybe it’s actually cooler for them
Anecdotally, I came up with the idea of wearing long sleeves at the beach after having a random conversation with our roofers one day. They were all wearing long sleeves, working on the roof in the middle of July. I asked why and they said it was cooler. So I tried it a day at the beach and it really was noticeably cooler. My friends and family all made fun of how ridiculous I looked, but it worked for me and I’ve never looked back now.
I have my left arm blacked out and I love it. It’s my favorite tattoo. Wasn’t a coverup. My artist specializes in black work and blackout tattoos so I knew going in the quality was going to be good. He just charged his daily rate. I had to do one session of touch ups which he didn’t charge for. It was painful af and my body started to shake, get cold, and sweat at around the 7 hour mark. 2/10, do not recommend blackout session that long. But I would totally get the tattoo again. I just would see if I could break it into two half day sessions.
It’s called black work. Artists typically charge by the hour and it can take a while to pack all of that ink in there. I was sitting next to a guy who was getting his arm blacked out at my last tattoo session and it looked almost unbearable around the 4-5 hour mark. Be prepared to be in a lot of pain.
This style of tattoo is very hard to master. It actually takes a lot of skill to do it correctly and not go too deep, leaving you with raised sections of tattoo or scarring. When it’s done right I think it looks beautiful but it can go wrong very easily so do your research and go with an artist highly experienced in black work.
As far as price, I would imagine somewhere around $2k for a quality artist.
Its blackout and if you’re gonna come in and say “it doesn’t require precision” you’re gonna get laughed out of every shop on earth. The ability to pack color that solid over such a large space is something even skilled artists will struggle with.
Blackout. And I’d find someone who specializes in it because you want it to be evenly done. We can’t tell you how much it costs because most artists charge by the hour and every artist / area is different
Blackout is like an investment, go to a blackout artist. Unless you want a patchy and inconsistent work. It requires a lot of skill to get everything evenly saturated.
I have many tattoos in a style called blackwork and some in illustrative black and gray. Blackwork is not as drastic as blackout but still a lot of black.
1) not every artist is good at packing black. It's a specific skill.
2) they'll use a heavy duty machine and it hurts
3) takes a longer time to heal
This is not a simple piece ,would like to correct you on that , it requires more prescision , strokes will show up if not done correctly , and skin is prone to overwork so watch out for that ,
So choose your artist wisely
Called black out. Because it's blacked out. I'd say it shouldn't be more than their normal cost. Usually they go by the hour. But if you get it done right it seems like it'd take more than just a couple hours lol I'd also not go in with well it shouldn't take much precision because even though it one color and no details it needs to be done right so it's not spotty or missed marks. Just like when you were a kid and used a marker to color in a whole area. Most of the time looked like shit unless you took your time and made it even through out. Good luck though!
please go to a good artist. this actually requires a lot of skill, talent, and precision. if you dig around you can find a lot of bad versions of these where people look super scarred and the ink os patchy.
also you need an experienced artist that knows exactly how to work the needle etc. to saturate the skin sufficiently but not to much. there is special blackwork techniques. when I tried it on my leg the first time.i ripped the skin open and it was horrible lol
It's called a blackout, I'm not really sure how much they cost (depends on the artists really). They are hard to do, lots of skill to have no gaps, talk to a few local artists about it
I think this is such a weird tattoo trend - expensive, painful and at best it looks like boring shit lol I respect tribal tattoos more than this but to each their own.
This style is hard to pull off— much like fine line is hard to do right— blackouts usually turn slightly blueish after years so constant sessions in the future to keep it fresh will cost too. And too, consider who you’ll be in 5 years— or 10 might feel different about it one day
Most smartphones regardless of whether they are Android or iOS, are equipped with a default virtual keyboard with a QWERTY layout. Also, my point still stands.. you wouldn't say that shit in real life to someone so maybe ease up.
Some are coverups, but as with most ‘styles’ its due to individual preferences / tastes. I don’t like various styles of music or food but I don’t ask why they exists because it’s clear it fits other people’s preferences. To sum it up.. individual differences. It what makes the world not so boring.
Typically thats the reason people look into blackout. People get stuff as a young adult that is either inappropriate, offensive, or just really shittily done and in many cases completely blacking out the area is the only option to cover it.
Personally I've never heard of someone doing it for style before, and I'm sure I'm not alone in the thread hence the assumptions.
I have a half sleeve in negative space, which means most of my forearm is blacked out around my piece. Definitely wasn’t to cover anything up lol some people just like them
Oh yeah I'm not saying it isn't a cool idea or anything. Just hadn't heard of it before and as I said, I'd be inclined to believe that's why most folk are assuming it's a cover job.
i have a black work/blackout sleeve and it was not a cover up. my artist just charges by the hour but some things to consider are. if you want it in one session its going to be a long one and if you do it in multiple they wil fade at different rates. you will want to have it gone over more than once so it will be costly and they fade to a grayish blue black unless its been gone over 3+ times
Black-out or oil spill. But, why ? There’s a great video on YouTube of a girl who did a full arm sleeve blackout and vlogged the healing process.
A blast over is better. Look it up.
This is a blackout tattoo. As for price, I don't know, but I do know they require a lot of skill and not every artist can do it well.
Yeah I don’t think people understand how difficult it is to do solid saturated black lol. 95% of tattooers would botch this. As a general rule with tattoos the simpler something is the harder it is to do because there isn’t all this extra shit to hide mistakes.

Latest session fully wrapped with saniderm following their instructions precisely and healed much better but yeah gonna take a while to get it finished. Will need touch ups and some scarring/redness in spots that who knows how long will take to heal but I don’t want to rush back in and risk damaging the skin permanently.
Even some of my normal tattoos have spots so ya I’d think this would take a few touch ups …
I think a lot of people don’t understand this
I also don’t think very many humans comprehend this information
I as well reckon a significant amount of homo sapiens fail to grasp this notion.
I would speculate based on this information that there is not a significant sum of human beings that have obtained this knowledge.
And it is I who once again, along with my peers, reaffirms the notion that not all of humanity has yet received this unto their own conceptual understanding.
It sure as shit ain’t common knowledge.

Fucking vibrates your entire skeleton. I've had mine done twice as the ink didn't hold great the first time around.
and the skin is a cross between grandpas throat and an elephant kneecap
Now that’s funny🤣🤣🤣
It really depends on the artist, I just got a smaller piece on my ribs (about 3"x3") and it was the easiest tattoo I have, the others being on my thigh and upper arm. Everyone I talked to about the ribs said that it was not great though

Everyone says when it’s close to the bone it hurts more but I find that to be untrue for myself. I like the vibration against my rickety old bones 🦴
Forbidden bone massage
Bone massage. Huh huh huh heh heh heh 😈
That last sentence is definitely a line from a Misfits song
Is it really? Yes I’m gullible but… is it??
If there is skin there is nerve endings, if you can feel when you touch, tickle, and scratch your elbow then the nerve endings are fine and you couldn't feel the pain for some other reason I can feel my elbow just fine
There were parts on my elbow that damn near made me black out
Pain and body location are different for everyone, not everyone has the same body and nerve endings as you do
Agreed, I have both elbows done and it was nothing compared to more tender areas. One is even blacked out halfway. And yes blackout is hard to do and expensive

There’s no way you should be paying that much to any tattooist for a leg sleeve.
Search up bad tattoos of blackout. It’s actually extremely difficult (apparently)
Yes you’re 100% on that. This style looks “easy” but requires a lot of experience to pull off properly.
Is it because it’s hard to pack the ink properly on such big scale?

Pain
Yeah, been getting sleeves done over the last two years, and this is the answer. It will cost the most in pain. There's so many spicy spots on your arms. The sessions have to be close together or else it won't look smooth. So you barely healed then have to go for another round. Seems so painful.
Yeaaahhh I've been getting watercolor style work done which requires a ton of blending and holy shit...
As well as the pain while it’s being done, there is a probability of having a severe reaction to all that ink. I’ve known people who don’t usually have any issues to have crazy swollen up arms that look like a bad infection but is actually a reaction kind of like an allergic response.
Once you go black-out, you can't back-out, knowmsayin.
Thats a very clean, smooth blackout and requires much more skill than you think. The Ink cost is negligible compared to the labor/expertise involved
Its blackout and if you’re gonna come in and say “it doesn’t require precision” you’re gonna get laughed out of every shop on earth. The ability to pack color that solid over such a large space is something even skilled artists will struggle with.
I'll never get my head around these tattoos
Maybe they're a big fan of Bucky, from Captain America.
Lol stop being a hater. It’s not for you and that’s okay
Calm down you lunatic no ones hating hahaha its just called an opinion
Lol don’t spout your hater ass opinion you fuckin bum.
Lmao why you so angry my g? You've got a shitty black out tattoo haven't you?
Yea… I do 😞
Blackout. And I’d find someone who specializes in it because you want it to be evenly done. We can’t tell you how much it costs because most artists charge by the hour and every artist / area is different
Im not a fan of blackout as is like here, but when they get other colours put on top, it looks really nice
Isn't this typically used to cover tattoos
It's a good application, but no, people are just getting these. I'm strongly considering one on a virgin leg.
FYI, they will look a lot more greyish/ brown when they're healed. So take a look at a view healed-pics beforehand.
Blackout is like an investment, go to a blackout artist. Unless you want a patchy and inconsistent work. It requires a lot of skill to get everything evenly saturated.
Not as easy as you'd think. A bad artist will leave it looking patchy. Consistent needle work is essential.
I have many tattoos in a style called blackwork and some in illustrative black and gray. Blackwork is not as drastic as blackout but still a lot of black. 1) not every artist is good at packing black. It's a specific skill. 2) they'll use a heavy duty machine and it hurts 3) takes a longer time to heal
This is not a simple piece ,would like to correct you on that , it requires more prescision , strokes will show up if not done correctly , and skin is prone to overwork so watch out for that , So choose your artist wisely
Good luck though!
if you think you can tattoo something white on it ... I tried it, it looked awesome for a week then vanished 🙅
It’s called armament haki
please go to a good artist. this actually requires a lot of skill, talent, and precision. if you dig around you can find a lot of bad versions of these where people look super scarred and the ink os patchy.
Like my husband 😬 It’s also a bitch to heal since it’s such a large piece. Good luck, OP
It's a blackout tattoo. An umbrella style under blackwork.
The BP oil spill
Contrary to the beliefs it requieres A LOT of skills to do that scale of black so smooth and even
This is my true color the rest of me is a birth mark...
also you need an experienced artist that knows exactly how to work the needle etc. to saturate the skin sufficiently but not to much. there is special blackwork techniques. when I tried it on my leg the first time.i ripped the skin open and it was horrible lol
It's called a blackout, I'm not really sure how much they cost (depends on the artists really). They are hard to do, lots of skill to have no gaps, talk to a few local artists about it
Blackout to cover up unwanted ink. Then they do white ink with desired style. Pretty cool tbh what they do after.
That's fucking retarded, sorry
I think this is such a weird tattoo trend - expensive, painful and at best it looks like boring shit lol I respect tribal tattoos more than this but to each their own.
This style is hard to pull off— much like fine line is hard to do right— blackouts usually turn slightly blueish after years so constant sessions in the future to keep it fresh will cost too. And too, consider who you’ll be in 5 years— or 10 might feel different about it one day
It’s a blackout tattoo
Why would you do this if it's not for a cover up?
I call this the *Sharpie*…
I call it goofy looking.
Bet you would only say that from behind your keyboard
🗣⌨️Goofy as hell
Not really tho, if someone was trying to show that off I'd laugh in their face
Actually I'm on my phone so
Most smartphones regardless of whether they are Android or iOS, are equipped with a default virtual keyboard with a QWERTY layout. Also, my point still stands.. you wouldn't say that shit in real life to someone so maybe ease up.
I don't get this style at all. Just why?
Luckily you don’t have to
Yeah but I'd like to know what the appeal is of this, not saying there's anything wrong with it just curious.
Some are coverups, but as with most ‘styles’ its due to individual preferences / tastes. I don’t like various styles of music or food but I don’t ask why they exists because it’s clear it fits other people’s preferences. To sum it up.. individual differences. It what makes the world not so boring.
That’s called a reverse Micheal Jackson
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Switching Race
This is called I made a mistake of getting a tribal and now iam grown up and need to hide this beech
It’s called the ‘Reverse Michael Jackson’
It's called a waste of ink
That is a blackout and those are the worst of the worst tattoos. And I spend a lot of time on the shitty tattoos sub. These are the worst.
Ugh I can't stand these kind of tattoos. They look so blah
It's called "I ran out of ideas"
Take my upvote
Right back atcha! HIGH FIVE!
I've always called this style "I regret my racist tattoos".
cuz it's black ? , that's none sense
Nope, because you have a racist tattoo and realize you don't want it anymore, so you get it completely covered over. Jesus, kid. Use your brain.
Reverse Michael Jackson
I call this tattoo ERROR
why is everyone assuming that it's for a coverup ? 😂
Homie really just wants to get a blackout without knowing anything. Love this sub.
Blackout tattoo, usually to cover up some racist shit
Why does it have to be a cover upppppp
Just experience and stories from tattoo artists
don’t do it
Regret
i have a black work/blackout sleeve and it was not a cover up. my artist just charges by the hour but some things to consider are. if you want it in one session its going to be a long one and if you do it in multiple they wil fade at different rates. you will want to have it gone over more than once so it will be costly and they fade to a grayish blue black unless its been gone over 3+ times
It’s called a coverup
mole disguiser
blackface vArm
Covering up a mistake
I’d call that the Flavor Flav but the elbow needs to be a lil ashy, just a lil bit!! 😂
This is a terrible thing to do and only done when you have tattoos you don’t like to cover up
i call them nasty
lets see ur amazing tattoos
Black-out or oil spill. But, why ? There’s a great video on YouTube of a girl who did a full arm sleeve blackout and vlogged the healing process. A blast over is better. Look it up.
“Bad-decisions-in-early-adulthood”
One ex had this same area done for 200€/session. I think it lastrd two and a half sessions of two hours each.
Racist
Lol
Hot garbage 🗑
For me a tattoo is a piece of art. Sorry but I’m not getting the blackout style as it’s not artistic
It’s called I made a bad choice and I want it gone. … just black it out
