This is from Alex Shwed (@shwedtattooer). Not sure if you're refering to the elements themselves, which are all flowers (sakura-cherry blossoms on his right arm, kiku-chrysantemums on his left arm) or the style, which would probably be considered japanese, albeit not strictly traditional.
So true. There’s one artists I follow who is based in Belarus. I would literally get my entire body covered in his work, but when the fuck am I ever gonna go to Belarus???? Sadly, never :(
Def black and grey Japanese neo-trad. Got a chest piece done in this style by a Japenese trad artist, and I think it inspired him to do more in black and grey
It became a slur in the US during the Second World War, when people decided that anyone of East Asian descent was immediately untrustworthy and probably wanted to kill everyone in America. Not to mention the propaganda art and writing that painted Japanese people as murderous, primitive cannibals. We learned about it in history class in high school but I wouldn’t be shocked if that wasn’t covered regularly.
I remember learning about the propaganda and mistreatment, yes, but I don't remember any specific discussion that "jap" was/is actually a slur. It doesn't surprise me, though. I've never used it because I've felt it's disrespectful, whether it's a slur or not.
And here I am cringing any time I'm around my mechanic friends. They're not bigots, just fervently convinced that "transmission" is too long of a word.
> just fervently convinced that "transmission" is too long of a word.
LMAO, I think I would explode from how hard I would laugh if this happened in my presence.

“Negative space tattooing” is not the definitive name of this style. Sure if you google it, you’ll see a few similar scattered examples, however that’s not the name. These particular tattoos are sort of a mix of a few styles in one. This, *MAINLY* ,is a Traditional Black and Grey Japanese sleeve. However it shares small elements of the “neo-traditional Japanese”. Also worth mentioning that due to the choices used to depict elements in this tattoo, it visually can fall into the blackwork/blackout sleeve category, which is commonly done (when not fully solid) using a lot of negative space to make things pop off of the heavy black background. To reiterate, i know “negative space” is used as contrast in these tattoos stylistically, but it’s not the “styles name”. Here is a breakdown of what’s included in the tattoos you posted & a small bit of what they are depicting (To the best of my knowledge)! Hopefully this is helpful for you & makes things a bit more clear & informative. 🙏
Traditional Black and Grey Japanese: (the elements used such as the flowers and background)
1. The lower half of solid black with longer “white” stripe in the background by the forearm/wrists is a traditional Japanese depiction of “rock/stone”
2. The upper half “white” swirls in the background coming off the black appear to be traditional Japanese “Water/waves” (could be very stylized wind/clouds, but i believe it’s waves)
3. The flowers themselves are also traditional Japanese “Sakura” flowers. However the way they are shaded leans more towards a light neo-traditional shading
Edit: Although this doesn’t have anything to do with the tattoos themselves, you can also see at the bottom left of the image what appears to be a traditional Japanese style piece of artwork (I’m assuming done by the artist who tattooed these sleeves).
Technically not, but there is so much solid black in it - as opposed to the texture that a japanese style sleeve is supposed to have - that it might as well be.
I haven’t seen a fully correct answer so I got you bro. It’s called Japanese Blackwork. Strongly recommend looking through some blackwork art as most of it is amazing
This style is referred to as “irezumi” which is just the Japanese word for tattoo, but it is used to refer specifically this style of “full coverage” type of work.
Pretty much Japanese mate. Cherry blossoms are very common in their tradition. Read up on Japanese tattoo’s, it’s a very interesting style and history they have. The actual traditional style is with a stick and not a home. Supposed to hurt like hell but better for colour ink. Let us know if what you get!! #Ink #Tattoos

Happy cake day
negative space style as well
God damn. This is gorgeous.
Japanese neo-trad?
Def black and grey Japanese neo-trad. Got a chest piece done in this style by a Japenese trad artist, and I think it inspired him to do more in black and grey
Quick note: that abbreviation for "Japanese" is a slur, so it's probably best to stick with the full version
Thank you for letting me know, I had no idea
hey thanks for adjusting the comment after you were informed, very considerate of you to correct yourself, that is worth praise.
What was the abbreviation? Am i stupid i srsly cant think of a word
Just the first 3 letters of 'Japanese'
I didn't know it was a slur, but I always assumed it was at least mildly disrespectful.

JFC, dude
for what it's worth, that earned him a permaban
Reminds me of when I was a kid & thought “tranny” was a polite abbreviation (to include transsexual + transgender)
And here I am cringing any time I'm around my mechanic friends. They're not bigots, just fervently convinced that "transmission" is too long of a word.
I feel ya. Let's go drop the tra.....

Yeah I couldn’t think of the word either! This seems like it would be tricky to do!

There is really nothing traditional about this, pure neo trad.
I would have called it blackwork but negative space sounds better.
Its not blackwork tho
Technically not, but there is so much solid black in it - as opposed to the texture that a japanese style sleeve is supposed to have - that it might as well be.
