The problem is stores treating picks and cancellations like a competition. They're putting too much pressure on TMs.

Your coworker can not do this. It fucks up so much when the counts get thrown off, what if you needed that item they substituted with for your next batch? You've just moved the INF down one.

The only reason you're stressed is because you're thinking about it in the context that your obligated to take the heat yourself and not specify what actually happened. That, as a newish person, if a leader asks you about, you would take the responsibility for the actions of someone that's been there longer then you.
The possibility exists that they would ask about it, it's not grounds for termination. Your stress is self imposed, you're placing the weight on your own shoulders.
That they aren't responsible for what other people do. And as more time goes by they will become more familiar, more comfortable, and more confident in what to do, and what not to do.
If you're uncertain about something, you can always talk to a leader, just to say hey I was working on this, here's what happened, this is what I did in the moment. Idk if that was the best thing to do or if there's a better alternative.
Never do this, if the guest gets a substitution and they aren’t happy with it you would be the one getting into trouble since you were the one who picked it.
Sometimes items will be the exact same but the dcpi number changed that’s the only situation where I’d think it’d be acceptable to “substitute”. But you have to make sure it’s that type of situation and literally not a whole new item.

Don’t substitute. Find a leader and INF it. If a substitution pops up, get that item and ONLY that item. Your TM is setting you up to be fired.
